  • In this Adventure Ryan video, I review the Finn Hawk, a bushcraft knife made by Cold Steel. Like the knives from Morakniv and Condor Tool and Knife that I recently reviewed, this in another great option if you're looking for a bushcraft or camp knife that won't empty your wallet. In this video, I break down the basic specs and design features of this knife and share some of what I've learned about this knife from using it over time.
    KNIFE SPECS:
    Blade Length: 4"
    Blade Thickness: 2.7mm
    Overall Length: 8.5"
    Grind: Scandi
Steel: German 4116 cryo quenched (stainless)
Handle Material: Polypropylene encased in Thermo Plastic Rubber (TPE)
    Sheath: Molded polymer

This is the BEST finn hawk review I've seen...

Thanks for the review. It's my favorite knife by far, I love the handle. Like you, I would like to see a thumb ramp on the sheath. On mine, I took a dremel and slightly ground down the "ramp" inside the sheath that secures the knife via the finger guard. Still good retention but if you grind too much the knife will slide out.

Good tip! Made me wonder if I could use a hot metal rod and melt the the sheath plastic just a little, making my own thumb ramp! (Or ruining my sheath…not sure what the exact outcome would be).

@@AdventureRyan that's a good idea too. With my mod I can get it out one hand draw, but pinching the end of the handle between my first 2 fingers and pushing on the belt loop with my thumb, like squeezing a syringe. It's not the safest though. I may try your mod idea. If I jack it up too bad kydex sheaths are only $25 on etsy. Ofc you can get a new knife and sheath for that. And I like the mora-style sheath for the reasons you explained in your mora video

Great on point review! Had mine a few years now...use it to strip diamond willow bark...it is an excellent knife for most any task... I don't split wood with it...Its a great rounded and useful knife for camp, kitchen and all other chores...thankyou

Thanks for the video Ryan; this knife reminds me so much of a Mora, which is a good thing.

You’re right. Very similar to a Mora. That high scandi grind makes it handle a little differently though, and so does the puukko-style blade profile. Subtle differences, for sure, but subtle differences in knife design is kind of fascinating to me.

Thanks Ryan. I quite like the Finn Hawk and I really like the Finn Wolf folding version.

I haven’t worked with the Finn Wolf before. Is it similar blade geometry to the Finn Hawk?

Yes it’s a shorter blade (about 3.5”) but it has the same profile and scandi grind. The steel is AUS-8 instead of 4116.

Never used mine but keep the Finn Hawk permanently in my day hike pack which is packed ready to go on short notice (no worry about crushed sleeping bag or tent, unlike my multi-day pack). The knife does have a much shorter tang than a Mora, maybe 1" to 1 1/2" into the handle but one review I saw where he pounded the knife into a log and the handle bent well before the blade did. I also carry the same knives I EDC, on a day hike so that gives me a total of three knife options on a hike that is not going to be very far into the woods. PS. My day hike pack does have survival items to handle an unexpected night in the woods.
