Many have noted that the characters represent the 7 deadly sins noted in Roman Catholic theology: Skipper = Anger, Gilligan = Sloth, Professor = Pride, Mr. Howell = Greed, Mrs. Howell = Vanity, Ginger = Lust, and Mary Ann = Jealousy? Others claim the Skipper represents both Anger and Sloth, and that Gilligan is Satan, who is always preventing souls from escaping Hell (the Island) through his actions, as Gilligan's action usually fouled up a chance for rescue. They also point point out that Gilligan does wear a red shirt (the Devil normally wearing red in the cultural depictions in the West).
I do believe Gilligan's first name was mentioned once. It was possibly the episode in season 2 where the news story came out on their never dying battery powered radio blaming the skipper for negligence in the loss of the SS Minow and he would be brought before maritime court should they ever find him. They spent the episode trying to reenact the events of the accident during the storm to prove there was no negligence but, of course, the Skipper was proven innocent at the end of the show as announced on the news.
It was October of 1978, I was 10 . I saw it then, just a few days before Halloween . I now have it on one of those $1 DVDs they used to sell in Dollar Store type places. I saw the 2nd film in 1979 and the Globetrotters one , in 1981. (One reunion film too many).
I actually do know a tidbit you didn’t mention. Dawn Wells herself told the story in a documentary I saw in 1989. The reason “the rest” was changed in the theme song. After the first season Bob Denver went to the network and said he wanted the Professor and Mary-Ann included in the theme song because Dawn and Russell were just as much a part of the group as everyone else. They refused because “it doesn’t fit with the score.” After confirming that his contract gave him the right to decide his own billing, he said he wanted to be part of “the rest” then. They changed the song to include the 2.
His real name was Willie Gilligan, the skipper Jonas grumby, the professor Roy Hinkley and Mrs Howell was Unice lovely was a pet name given to her by Mr Howell.
I'm surprised that you did not mention where the Island that is used in the intro of each show is located; the island shown at :30 seconds into this video. It is located a few miles from Negril, Jamaica within view of a private beach diving area of a lodging business outside of Negril that I have been to several times. It's a pretty small island that could never provide a lagoon or many of the attributes that the stories of Gilligan's Island requires.
If you watch that sequence, you will observe that some of the waves coming towards the camera are breaking, as if they are entering shallow water, perhaps just before a shore just behind the camera. Is it Booby Cay? That's the only inshore island that I could find near Negril - at least on GoogleMaps. I looked at Booby Cay from a photo sphere there, and if it _is_ the same island, it no longer has those towering palm trees. What happened?
If you look carefully and in slow motion there's 8 (eight) people on the boat not the 7 (seven) of our cast. And it's NOT Dr. Smith...... He was the stowaway on a different ship.
"The Coast Guard got loads of letters begging them to go out and rescue Gilligan and his pals" 😂😂😂 So what happened to officially end this show? I must be missing something...

There is kind of an unofficial fourth season in the guise of Dusty's Trail. Which is set in a lost Wagon Train heading west. Stars Denver as the titular Dusty, who is just like Gilligan, and a cast of characters that are copies of all the Gilligan characters. Even though it was made just ten years after Gilligan debuted, Denver looked visibly older. It's not a great show, but interesting if you want to see the Gilligan's Island concept in a different setting.
One of the episodes in the first season dealt with that. They did patch the holes and coated the boat with the syrup they used as glue. But the stuff didn’t hold for long and the boat sank right after they set out. They had to swim to shore and the boat was gone
@@eph2vv89only1way ....if I may, you are almost right. The Minnow didn't sink, instead it fell apart where it was beached as the syrup glue turned to powder and pretty much reduced the wood to sawdust. The final moment of that scene was Gillian holding the only intact piece of the USS Minnow, the helm aka ship's wheel

Yes I have heard before that the Coast guard got letters and people really believe they were stranded on an Island. But how could anyone possibly believe that when they were watching them on TV.
There were two different "Rescues" movies... first I saw spun off a reboot of a weekly series. Some Coast Guard officials show up... "We have a boat..." The seven go on another boat tour, is lost at sea and winds up on... Gilligan's Island, again. The second Rescue version is where the huts are made into rafts, set out to sea by a typhoon or hurricane, and are rescued by a crew in a Coast Guard helicopter. New trivia to know Bob Denver's lineage with Denver, Colorado. So, Stewie Gilligan Griffith and Willy Gilligan... what was his character last name?

I loved the show, it was the reruns. I still watch them. I think the right people was casted. After watching it for eons. I still laugh and enjoy it. I felt sorry. For Gilligan..i loved Mary Ann. The professor. Still today one of my favorite episodes is the radio active seeds. Seeing Mrs Howell run and being super fast, I loved it. Not to add Maryann and the professor would been a big mistake. Though I loved Gilligan, he seemed to be picked on, messed up a lot. He made the show. I don't think anyone but Bob Denver could of played that role, his boyish innocent. Was perfect. Sweet, kind Mary Ann, the brilliant professor. I love Mrs Howell, the skipper as well.. Ginger was to caught up in her looks, too vain, but after all she play a movie star, though her and the Howells seemed out of place, did not seem the types to take a, 3hour tour. They all made it work. I admit some episodes I did not like. It really did look like a real island. It was sad ginger was the only one who refused to make a appearance with the rest of the cast, refused to do the movie was like she was still playing her ginger role. Sad I think Tina Louise is the only one still living.. I don't think she make appearances. I don't think playing ginger typecast ed her. Sad she feel playing that role kind of ruined her acting career. That was a role. And that's Hollywood. By the way how is she. Not only did she survive Gilligan island. She out lived all the cast. I just watched the first episode of 'Gilligan' on The Sundance Channel, shown in the wee small hours. I loved the show as a kid, but watching that first episode now I can say IT'S TERRIBLE! How the show survived beyond the first few episodes is beyond me. It was a different time, of course, but other comedy shows like 'Dick Van Dyke' and even 'The Beverly Hillbillies' look way more sophisticated than the early Gilligan episodes! In any case, thanks for this interesting backstory.
The Gilligan’s Island tribute show hosted by Dawn Wells in 2001, is where the majority of this information came from…. Almost verbatim. It’s great behind the scenes history and facts that’s been recreated to tell the audiences how this show came to be. Sherwood Shwartz was as brave and sure as the Mate and the Skipper! Three times rejected…. But the screening audiences would override “the suits” that ran the network. Although GROSSLY underpaid… and with no residuals paid out…. This cast of castaways ranks #1 in reruns played all over the world! It even beat out “I Love Lucy!” It’s just a good imagination show that brings childlike imagination and humor together. As Jim Bakus said, “Without humor, you have nothing.”
Gilligan's island came to an end when the writers were asked; what ideas do you have for season 4 and they replied, we got nothing. You can only have so many plot lines on a deserted island.
Gilligan's Island Officially Ended After WHAT happened?? This video seems to have nothing to do with the title. The title should be "The history of Gilligan's Island"
@@harperstacey9604 I could not possibly answer that question, for it has been over 30 years since I have seen the castaways. They spent the episode trying to reenact the events of the accident during the storm to prove there was no negligence but, of course, the Skipper was proven innocent at the end of the show as announced on the news.
I remember that one too!
Also, the weather reported on mainland was wrong the day before sailing.
That was the answer. 😉
The Professor is the man I heard of that can make radio out of 2 coconuts. Loved it.
He was Mr Science before Bill Nye!
The original MacGyver
Gilligan and the other castaways were finally rescued in a reunion movie in 1978 or 79 (the same school year I graduated high school)
It was cool that Bob went to bat for Dawn and Russell. It is said that it takes a very smart person to play dumb, and Bob was a very smart man.
@@nicoleknight9412 I totally agree. And him doing that for them speaks volumes about who he was
I was singing the song with them in it before it was changed. It was so obvious how it could be done.
Its surprising how many people don't even notice that change in the theme song.
@@richardlong9785 really? I didn’t know that. I noticed it at 10 years old!
I like the Gilligan's Isle lyrics set to Stairway to Heaven's music....very cool.
"Stairway to Gilligan's Isle"
Little Roger and The Goosebumps
Never knew this so had to look it up. Absolutely hilarious.
I always liked Alan Hale in all his works! RIP
Alan hale appeared in many films.
For years, I thought that Bob Denver"s character was named Gill Egan
Haha...I hope your kidding...
@Brian Smith 😂
His real name was Willie Gilligan, the skipper Jonas grumby, the professor Roy Hinkley and Mrs Howell was Unice lovely was a pet name given to her by Mr Howell.
Did you never read the opening credits
@@JohnLee-pt5jz Didn't Mr. Howell call her Lovey? Didn't know those other names before, where did you find that out?
Just love that show. Feels like home to me.
It’s Waldo!
"The Coast Guard got loads of letters begging them to go out and rescue Gilligan and his pals" 😂😂😂
So what happened to officially end this show? I must be missing something...
Gunsmoke took its spot
I think the Coast Guard did save them in the first reunion movie, and the Air Force in the second.
Actually, the wife of G I 's producer wanted to see Gunsmoke, so, he had Gilligan's Island canceled. 😾
I LOVED THIS SHOW ‼️. I even borrowed the 3 season disc set so I could watch it again & again ‼️. Nick ~ Thanks for the memories ❤️
an era of innocence.
Ginger or Mary Ann?

Loved that show..
just finished a marathon of this great show only took a few weeks cause of work but I love this show and all the classic tv shows. And I'm still waiting for funko pops of Gilligans island
Gilligan's Island Officially Ended After This Happened (SO WHAT WAS IT ?)

Filmation: Mister Backus, we're doing a 'Gilligan' cartoon for Saturday mornings. Would you be interested in getting into voice acting work?
(Jim's living room has multiple Magoo pics and trinkets)
JB: My boy, you're an idiot, aren't you?
There is kind of an unofficial fourth season in the guise of Dusty's Trail. Which is set in a lost Wagon Train heading west. Stars Denver as the titular Dusty, who is just like Gilligan, and a cast of characters that are copies of all the Gilligan characters. Even though it was made just ten years after Gilligan debuted, Denver looked visibly older. It's not a great show, but interesting if you want to see the Gilligan's Island concept in a different setting.
All the things they built on that island but they couldn't patch a hole in a boat?!?!? lol
@@kaos2317 ah. Ty. It is understandable that I made a mistake though - I was only 7 when the show was canceled lol
@@eph2vv89only1way .....actually you remembered quite well. I'm certain you remember more details than most other fans. Besides remembering the details, I do have what might be considered a unfair advantage....reruns of Gilligan's Island are being broadcasted in my area on MeTV/channel 56.3 on Sundays. The episode of topic I have not yet seen in the ru-runs yet but its only a matter of time. Pls take care, be safe
@@kaos2317 ty. You take care and be safe as well.
Btw, I remember when it was cancelled and for several days I fantasized about being in charge of scheduling for all of the networks and putting Gilligan’s Island in every time slot on every network. Lol
I liked the rescue from Gilligan's island movie plus the show
They were still on the island at end of season 3 They finally got off the island in a TV movie
Fifteen years later, they were rescued, got re-stranded on the same island, got rescued again, turned the island into a resort, and then the Harlem Globetrotters had to play a game to save it.
I love this show
Bob Denver was a hell of a man of principle for wanting to be part of the others
The flag at half mass was interesting.I saw Kennedy shot.I was not in school yet.My mother turned it off.Today parents are thrilled a baby watches and understands news. The age of secrets.
Rachel Welch as Mary Ann, would have me watch EVERY last episode...
Jayne mansfield was first choice for the role of Ginger. Could you imagine Raquel Welch and Jayne Mansfield on gilligan's island together. It would be clash of the divas. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
filmation made gilligan's planet in 1982 then went on to produce he -man and other cartoons till 1989.
gilligans planet was not filmationtion's last cartoon as you stated.
Jerry Van Dyke appeared in 200 episodes of "Coach" which, unlike "Gilligan's Island" did pay residuals to the cast.
And The Brady Bunch and Bewitched were mine. I raced home in time to catch Dark Shadows.
Save yourself the trouble, NOTHING happened to end Gilligan's Island. The idiots at DoYouRemember are all about click bait now!! Report for misleading titles, again...
Shows how little you know. The Network President's wife wanted Gunsmoke back on the schedule in the time slot that Gilligan's Island and another show so it was canceled.
@@nimblehealer199 Just as well. I hated that show anyway.
@@chaosdemonwolf1 so why did you watch this video?
@@daledickey8400 I didn't. I came to see the comments.
Love Dawn Wells, my first TV crush.
GREAT ONE! on Gilligans island ALSO It would be so Kool if you did one on Alice tv series with Vic Tayback.
Vic tayback was hilarious as Mel the cook on Alice.
Love respect and positivity always. Vj.

In his tv show Life Is Worth Living, the then Bishop Fulton J Sheen said if stranded on a deserted Island he would take "auther's name" Guide to Shipbuilding.!
More click bait, reported to UA-cam. How about actually explain what takes these shows off the air. Or start naming your videos facts about said shows.
He said Gunsmoke replaced it and that is how it was taken off the air. No proper finish for the show unfortunately, there was going to be another season. Wonder if there are any lost scripts somewhere?
Dawn Wells wasn’t able to do “The new adventures of Gilligan” cartoon, but she not only reprised her role as Mary Ann in “Gilliagan’s planet”, but she did Tina Louise character as well.
Dawn Wells had dementia when she passed away. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Raquel Welch would have made a stunning Ginger!
It would have been a huge uproar if they tried to cancel it if she was Ginger..
Was Bob Denver related to John Denver? Or was John Denver named after Bob Denver?
The funny thing is that John Denver named himself after one of his favorite places-Denver, Colorado.
The reason This show was canceled was to keep Gunsmoke on Television.
Gilligan's island was sacrificed for Matt dillon and miss Kitty.
When Tina Louise's clothes fell of and Alan Hale and Bob Denver saw her naked?
I remember when Maryann was swimming and Gilligan went fishing and snagged her swimsuit. Not Tina Louise though
I dream of Ginny and Gilligans island were my favorite.
It's jeannie, not Ginny. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
5:03 wait what? you were in the credits?! 😳😲😮 Geehs how old this guy really is?! He sounds young!
Btw ,
They never taped anything back then;
Everything was filmed;
You people need to get your facts strait ;
I’m just saying
The professor's first name is Roy, not Rory (as we hear at 2:37)!
Gilligan's island came to an end when the writers were asked; what ideas do you have for season 4 and they replied, we got nothing. You can only have so many plot lines on a deserted island.
Gilligan's island came to an end because the network wanted to make room for gunsmoke. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Gilligan's Island Officially Ended After WHAT happened?? This video seems to have nothing to do with the title. The title should be "The history of Gilligan's Island"

CBS producers wanted Gilligan to have a pet dinosaur. They decided against it when the special effects would cost $75,000 / minute. Keep in mind that's 1960s values not today's inflation.
I'm surprised that, in this video, the castaways' trip to the island home of "Dr. Boris Bellinkoff" wasn't mentioned.
Thumbnail misleadingly :(
If they had Macgyver instead of the Professor, they would've been able to fix the Minnow in no time, but if they had Tim the Tool Man Taylor , he'd try to fix the Minnow and sink the Island !!!! RRR RRR RRR I think I used too much power!!!( And Wilson can't save him this time!!!)
So, Bob Denver is actually and truly related to the city of Denver? That's fascinating.
