I've been wearing wigs and helper hair for about twenty years. On all my synthetic wigs and hairpieces, I use Woolite as the shampoo, then the unscented Downy fabric softener as the conditioner. I do so in cool to cold water. It only takes a little bit of Woolite and a very little bit of the fabric softener. I've been doing this method for twenty years. My wigs have always come out looking and feeling great. I always wash my new wigs before I even wear them (other than the initial try on). I have zero experience with wig shampoo/conditioner, as I have never used either/or.

Jill, I started wearing wigs about a year ago and have not missed one of your videos... you have been a wealth of information for me (wigs and makeup). I have exclusively dealt with Wigs By Patti Pearls and have more wigs than (1) 60 year old needs. I experimented with a few of the top brands and have settled on 1 heat friendly style by Rachel Welch ... "Straight up with a Twist" I work in a small office/business and work with the public so I really needed my hair to look about the same from week to week LOL... I rotate 3 wigs and wash them every other weekend - (plus I bought a back up I'll call it my Corona Wig) .... I have always used Woolite and a very small amount of fabric softener...... but I soak/wash them in my bathtub - so I use a good bit of water. I also have come some across a product that I use when the fibers start to look dry.... and it is a product by Garnier - it is SLEEK & SHINE ANTI FRIZZ SERUM - I use it as a treatment - pour it into my hand ( a good bit and gently work it into the wet wig (after washing) and leave it wrapped up in a towel (for about a half an hour) then rinse SUPER GOOD and it almost takes it back to new.... a little shiney - pretty much just like they are when you take them out of the box......it must have some silicone-like properties but if you have a wig that needs some serious TLC you should try it. I always hang min upside down (by the tag in the nape) to dry - seems like when I go to wear them in the AM they dry fuller with a little bounce because of the way they dried....
Thanks for the wonderful information and BTW you look KETO-FABULOUS... Denise H. in OHIO

I've found that washing wigs often with wig shampoo & wig conditioner ages them much faster, perhaps a way to sell more wigs. Now I wash my own hair every morning before putting on my wig (I cut my own hair myself - about 1" all over). I am interested in products to revitalize the synthetic fibers - Downey fabric softener makes more sense to me but I'll be looking for a more natural version without all the chemicals. Thanks for this helpful video! 💟

Love your videos Jill. I have been using Tress Allure’s shampoo & conditioner that I received as a bonus in a wig purchase about a year ago. I only use about a tsp of shampoo & conditioner in my regimen. I really like the results that I get.
I, too, hold off shampooing & conditioning for as long as possible. I figure that since these are synthetic fibers, like in clothing, each washing will break down the fiber(s). I’ve been wearing wigs for about 2-1/2 yrs now, but, I haven’t tossed a single one yet. However, I have donated some of my wigs (after a wash & condition) that I have only worn for reviews, to one of the hospital cancer centers where I live. They are truly thankful. Thank you for your sharing your wig experiences with us!

I wash my wigs faithfully following Patti's instruction after wearing them about 10 times, or, if I sweat through my head enough to get the cap wet. I always use wig shampoo and cold water. My good name brand wigs have held up long after they should have pooped out. I only use wig hair spray when I use it. Hail Patti! I wear a wig every day and am now 3.5 years in. My friend wears only Paula Young and never washes them. She trashes them when they wear or are too dirty.

Thank you so much, Jill. I just started using products by Wig Lift and already I'm hooked; her products are entirely
unscented which is really important for me. Also, she has a great video on how to wash, condition and care for
a synthetic wig. I'm frankly surprised I don't hear more about her products and I encourage all to check out
Wig Lift. And no, I'm not on their payroll! I do, however, get mind-bending headaches and nausea from synthetic
fragrance chemicals - especially on my head - and know others have the same problem. So when I find good unscented
products, I share it with the world.

I use Herbal Essence Tea-Lightfully Clean shampoo on my wigs. It smells wonderful and clean. I use either Revlon or Jon Renau conditioner about a tablespoon in a small basin of water to rinse. Have used on many different brands of wigs and they have all turned out beautifully. I get the shampoo from Amazon. The conditioners I find on eBay occasionally so I snap those up when they come available. I only wash once a month using Febreeze inside the cap very lightly to keep it smelling fresh.

It's very disheartening and frustrating when you're spending so much trying to find a wig style that you like and will last longer than a month.

Would the chemicals our water is treated with to make it “safe to use” be part of the problem? Regular water from the faucet usually has or smells like chlorine. The water can also be hard, which has too much calcium, or lime. It seems like everything affects them and most of the time not for the better.

I usually wash my wigs mainly when I see makeup around the front that touches my face and I always leave my wig on an open wire wig stand after I first take it off, so it can air dry. I tell you what I'd like for all consumers is wig tags disclosing all the spects on the hairpiece Example Categories for tags: Fiber/hair type and the grade, Density, Cap Type, Monofilament top, Lace Front. Maybe you can think of more?.1st wash didn't get rid of the silicone. I was in a live chat and a lady said she washes her new synthetics 3 times and then uses dry shampoo. I ruined my editors pic by doing this, and that was one of my very first wigs. So sometimes it is a month or longer or less. I think I'll get the formula for Downey and try that. I can't afford to have multiple wigs and spend lots of money on trying different wig products.

I’m wondering if you’ve done a video about confidence. I think it’s time for me to start wearing a hair piece (wig or topper), but I’m really self-conscious that people will make fun of me and I feel like it will draw attention to my hair loss. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi Jennifer, I’m a complete novice to wigs and toppers but ordered one a month ago. I have thinning hair and no matter what I do it never looks good. I bought a topper and wore it to work the last couple of weeks. I got so many compliments, and friends had no idea I wore a topper. I just got “your hair looks great!” I did confide in a few just to make sure they didn’t know and they were so surprised. It’s given me the confidence I need every day and I always have great looking hair! I live in the desert so wearing a wig for the next 4 months ain’t going to happen. But then topper has been cool and comfortable even at 112 degrees! Go for it! You’re going to love the difference.

Jennifer R-F, my wife wears wigs all the time. She was afraid at first, but no one has ever said a word. Besides, you should please yourself first. Never pay attention to others when you know best what you need. There ARE rude people out there, but they'll always be with us. Sometimes they're just badly raised and ignorant. Do what is best for you.

Hi Jill..you are the first person I subscribed to. I have followed you to learn from your expertise on wigs. I’m a relatively new wig wearer, a little over a year. The video I first watched on washing a wig, you washed the wig with woolite and conditioned it with Downey. What changed for you? I didn’t wash my wig yet, so let me know. I have about 5 wigs and 3 toppers. My 1st topper was the Jon Renau you also have.

Helpful, thank you. I have a Raquel Welch that feels terrible. I purchased good, proper wig shampoo & spray conditioner. Seems like it might be the conditioner? I'm going to rinse it & see what it does. I think I might be allergic to what ever comes on the wigs. Get an immediate rash where ever it touches. Is there some kind of spray that is for sensitive skin?

    • @lindapullan6937

Hi I think giving it a rinse is a good idea. Do you wear a wig cap under your wig? The ones made of bamboo are very soft and good if you havr a sensitive scalp. They are also very cool to wear.

@@themerz6982 hi again. You can wear the wig cap with a wig grip. The caps made of bamboo that I've seen do not have any elastic so can slip so try wearing it on top of your wig grip. It will protect your scalp and hair and very cooling in hot weather. Some wig providers sell them or try Amazon. I hope it helps.

So confused, use softener and not and use cheap soap and use wig shampoo - boil it to revive it and god knows what. I purchased a previously owned wig ( to see the style really, colour is all wrong for me ) that some lady said was very little used.........yeah no, looked like a rats nest and I washed it 2 twice, 1st time it stayed stiff and funky and the 2nd time I thought, whatever Ill drown it in lukewarm water with fabric softener and it smells heavenly, it did not fall apart, the cap did not expand - and its more shiney and perhaps it wants a new home as its too red for me, but I loved the cap :) its RW and I forgot the style name as it was purchased in Norway from a store that sells to hospitals etc and thats different names...go figure. Anyway - i got another Belle Madame supposedly used once....and wow what a year-long party that must have been - the lace is ripped and the wig looks like it got an electric shock. So I was adviced to trim the lace and maybe cut in bangs and then I will wash it and drown it in softener, cause you cant use it as it is. the lace looks melted or burnt.. Maybe a steamer or blowbrush on low low heat would collect the ends, but its honestly look like real hair cause its so shitty condition. But I can FEEL its pretty soft fibers and everyone here is bragging about Belle Madame so I will give her a 2nd chance at life :) I am so happy you liked the shampoo and conditioner, I JUST bought mine along with 2 wigs, toppers, stands and combs and and and on a sale from Continental wigs and its WAY cheaper than buy hre in Norway - a BM wig here starts at about 6-700 USD and UP for synthetic- so I am excited fr the arrival next week

It’s not rocket science. Some of us wig wearers make too much fuss about how and when to wash a synthetic wig. If by the seventh day your wig smells funky, are you going to keep wearing it for the next five days because someone suggested it on UA-cam. Common sense should tell you when it’s time to shampoo and condition. If you care anything about your synthetic wig and want it not only smell clean but looks great and last a bit longerč, use a synthetic wig shampoo and conditioner or Woollite and fabric softener just don’t have
    your water too hot.
