I have been doing this for years with my A6500 (and soon to be FX30) to record with an MKE600 into the camera and a wireless lav mic into the Ninja, works out very clutch
Great video as always Chris, Thankyou...Question : Have you tried it using SDI?
Hey Chris :D
I have an fx9, fx6, fs7 and a zoom f8n for multicam jobs. And I've bought 4x Ambient timecode devices: 1x Nanolockit as MASTER and 3x tiny lockits as slaves and I have to say.... It's get absolute best way to run video and audio! Nothing beats timecode :)
Just did this same setup! I like the top handle but it makes the camera look like a 90s camcorder used for skate videos lol so I went with a Tilta cage! Now it looks cool! 🤙🏻
Thanks! That’s great information! I’d use that
The Ninja V is also the only way to record 4K 10-bit Long-GOP, with the H.265 upgrade. But wait a minute... @7:24... the button under Custom Button 3 is the 'Display' Button... you don't need to re-map your S&Q button to turn on /off the info-display. 😂
Brilliant!!
💪🏻
NICE!! Great work around and one I will definitely be implementing... Now about that little top plate: I need one
Time and a place for when it’s useful! Glad you
Finally got yours 😊
Great solution if you're already running a monitor. I still can't believe that Sony didn't even put a 3.5mm input on the body. It would made it so much better when using on a gimbal or using radio mics. Went with the FX3 but man I want that VND!
The perfect camera still doesn’t exist 😅
@@chrisbrockhurst If it did, Camera Conspiracies would be out of a job, eh? 🙂
Check the Tilta Mirage Mattebox for your FX3 VND woes. Works great.
Just add a VND to your lens.
Hey man great video! Can you tell me what you used to mount the DJI receiver to the top of the Ninja V? I need whatever that is! thank you!
I wish Sony made a XLR mini adapter that would hook up to the Fx6 the same way the handle would
Thank you 👍🏽
Excellent video. Motivated me to lose the top handle. Pardon my stupid question Chris but I am wondering if by using the HDMI cable the Ninja connected mic, it allows audio to be recorded to the Camera’s internal video files on the SD cards??
This helped me so much! Was thinking I could get audio paired with one of my Ninjas using the audio jack but didn't know about the Time code trigger record method. Thanks! Should make rigging the camera to the RS3 pro much easier
Great to hear!
I have the same challenges with the Canon XA11...I have to stick to the phantom power for my mics though
Sure it works, but the Ninja V is bigger and heavier than the top handle if the purpose is to put it on a gimbal. The Tentacle sync is still the best option for me. Syncing is not much of an extra step it is literally one click in post.
yeah. this is a confusing video. i assume it's for people who think the other handle is fragile plastic? I came here trying to see if there are any alternatives to using a tentacle sync... onward
@@zacki5663 You do not mount the Ninja to the camera when you mount it on a stabilizer, you mount it externally to the body of the stabilizer. .
Yes, mount the Ninja to the stabilizer handle arms beneath the gimbal. Good solution if you just record a lav. But since it is only a 3.5mm jack on the Ninja, you only get a lav track out of it.
What do you think about using Tent Sync with a TC Zoom recorder. You then get separate tracks to record both a Track E lav and the second track with a XLR shotgun mic with/without phantom power supplied by the Zoom. You also get all the audio features/controls/specs of the Zoom with good preamps.
Where did you get the wire hooks that's attached to your purple hdmi? Or if you have any wire hook recommendations for the fx6 that would be awesome!
Where did you get the wire hooks that's attached to your purple hdmi?
Frankly I'm stunned Sony haven't made an low profile audio input accessory that slots into the top port where the handle goes. Easy money 🤷♂️
What plate did you use to attach the DJI mic to the Atomos Ninja V?
Does this record audio directly to the fx6 internal cfexpress cards? Or is this only for the ssd on the ninja?
Hi. New FX6 user here and I tried setting this up with my Ninja V, however, the camera is only pick up/recording audio from it's scratch mic. The Ninja V is recording from the the Rode GO's have hooked up, but the FX6 isn't reading the audio from the Ninja V. What am I missing? Thanks!
What if you uses the tentacle track e in place of the dji mic but connected the tentacle to a shotgun mic??? Then youd have a shotgun mic without the top handle?
my handle/monitor started giving me issues, i was quoted $1100 to fix. This is a good workaround until I can get it repaired. Thank you!
Welcome!
Where did you get the wire purple hdmi?
I've been doing this for a while now cause i owned the ninja and it's literally the only way to do it i believe, but for the past 6 months I've been doing it it works no issue !
Amazing to hear, thanks for sharing
I'm getting a ton of feedback as soon as I hit record using this same setup (fx6, rode wireless go ii mic, atomos ninja v+) I have my signal set to mic line in. Do you have your audio signal set to (Line IN? or Mic Line IN?)
The audio setup of the FX6 has always stopped me from considering it. I use the Ninja V with my FX30 and this solution is one I'd try if I find myself using an FX6. I record all my audio to a Sound Devices MixPre3 II, and use timecode to sync in post.
What is the performance if you use a video transmitter - say: FX6>transmitter. - receiver>Ninja… with fx6 on a gimbal… will the latency of the video lag behind the direct audio input ???
There must be another step in the Sony set up because mine will not trigger record, matching what you have on the screen. Also the Ninja burns through batteries way too quick. Don't like all the extra weight of a big battery. It's one solution but I'm looking for another. Thanks for the video.
just got my FX6 saving for a Ninja V now as the storage is WAY cheaper than CFExpress Type A and V90 cards.
Does it work on the Atomos Ninja V+ ?
Great video. You said the recording on the Atomos can be triggered via the FX6. Can you then have overlays turned on and appearing on the Ninja and the FX6's internal recording a clean video feed? Or does the overlays also get recorded into the FX6's internal recording?
Overlays are not recording internally on the fx6
If using both of the DJI mics can the Ninja V split them to L/R on a stereo channel? Similar to how the a7siii does? - I love the fx6 but the audio limitations without the handle and lack of stereo inputs is a bit annoying. Thanks for sharing this solution!
Yes. That’s done via coding from the receiver to the ninja.
make a video using this setup with a boom mic please
Hello, are you bale to do paid video tutorial for Sony fx6?
Hope this helps, fingers crossed for a 3.5 input in the future!!
The crazy part is that Sony could be making a ton of money. If they just made 2x XLR jacks and 1x mini that plugs in directly to the port where the top handle goes, almost every FX6 user would spend another $100. Maybe $200 if it also has the capability to plug-in the Sony digital lav system via a hot-shoe.
It would basically be a dongle with a cable, and the end of the dongle with the jacks could be attached by standard 1/4-20" screws. I've actually though a mod could be done to this affect by disassembling the top handle and making a 3D-printed enclosure specifically for this purpose. The big downside being that Sony sells replacement top handles for $500, so messing this up (or wanting both the top handle and this "breakout cable") would be at minimum a $500 expense.
Random Q, but what NPF battery do you have on the ninja and how long does it last? My little NPFs that size are absolute garbage
The ninja CHEWS through batteries. If I have to use them I have these ones that say ‘laleader’ on the back but no other branding. They have a button with LED battery remaining indicator on them too. In general I’d rather go v-mount on FX6 with D-Tap power
how do you get the red "rec rectangle" around your monitor image with your FX6. Is it on your Ninja V or FX6 ?
That’s on the Ninja V. It’s how the monitor indicates that it’s recording
So you want to remove the Sony handle so you can mount the Ninja and DJI mic on a DJI RS gimbal? That’s the main goal, so you have lav sound and a monitor? Ninja’s are not light. So it adds to the fatigue factor and you get just lav audio.
Just an idea but perhaps you could go with an alternative: a Tentacle Sync Track E lav solution jammed synced to a TC capable Zoom recorder with XLR’s and input level wheels. Attach it to the Gimbal handle top with a XLR shotgun mounted on top of the other handle. And a lightweight monitor attached on the handle arm. Which together lowers the weight to your rig and off the FX6 entirely allowing it to be mounted bare bones on the gimbal with no accessories or additional weight. You get shotgun and lav recordings synced to different tracks easily via the Tentacle app. You give up the Ninja codecs and go with the FX6 internal codec choices.
Or best, go with the Tent Syncs and a sound recordist if you have the budget. But as a solo operator this should work. Your thoughts Chris?
Sweet 😝
Is it recording simultaneously to the ninja and internal cards?
when trigger record is turned on, yes
2:18
If you are recording slog through the HDMI dont forget to enable the "Legalize" setting
Input>Camera Output>Legalize
Is it possible to record audio in 120fps somehow with this workaround? I don’t know why it is possible with the fx3 and not with the fx6. My personal dealbreaker 😵💫
you’ll need the Ninja V+ (step up from the Ninja V he’s using in the video, which tops at 60 fps)
Good hack mate!
nice, I hate the top handle on the fx6
has its pros and cons for sure
why not ninja v +
0.00 forgot to ad lut haha
With this level of bulk you might as well just use the top handle...
once you add an XLR mic it gets long fast.
isn't it silly to use a setup wich don't offer a long depth of focus to do this kind o video ?
So you solved it with an Atmos 5 AND wireless mics ... Haha ok but i think you missed the point of a lightweight rig so you can Gimbal
😂 it is funny how people have to jump hoops to get something soooo basic on a $6000 camera. I have 4 channels in my C70 with just the body
Mini xlr though 😉
@@chrisbrockhurst bought a Kondor blue for $30 and problem solved, with $30 you have to buy a $600 monitor, wireless system and the $30 HDMI cable. Not the same and way better on C70
There a better way to record audio right to camera seamlessly. Buy a Canon C70. 😜
