- Why did Gustavo Fring make Los Pollos Hermanos assistant manager clean the deep fryer repeatedly in Better Call Saul (Breaking Bad prequel) while Lalo Salamanca was having Gus' drug dead drops raised by the DEA and agent Hank Schrader? Why did Gus Fring do this?

For the record, that fryer was cleaner than a brand new one out of the box before Lyle even touched it.
As a fry cook myself I can confirm this to be true.
Maybe he used him as a human shield
Where was he in breaking bad where did he go
Gus always had a touch of OCD… and was also a perfectionist on top of that…. So not being able to have any power over the situation bothered him
nah its not ocd
I don't know what is all there problems. How much more money can you foooqin make. Only death stopped them all.
me when i don't know what I'm talking about
@@aqebraxit could be, remember him cleaning the bathtub?
His childhood is to blame for this, poor, with nothing, his destiny was being chosen by poverty... Now he wants to have control over everything
You could almost argue that Fring's perfectionism is his 'fatal flaw'. It's what lead him to chase the blue stuff (despite initial reservations) because of the % difference in purity between that and Gayle's product. It's also at least partly what lead him to keep Hector alive, he wanted his revenge to be 'perfect' by having Hector witness his family and cartel pals all die.
this makes no sense. he wasnt chasing the blue stuff at all. if anything, he was going to kill walter white so that gale had no more competetors. remember, all gus really wanted was payback for max. and gale's meth was more than enough to get it done. it was gale himself who kept pressing gus about the blue stuff.
Lyle was the example of a good person, and Gus making him clean the deep fryer multiple times shows us how Gus is willing to trample on a good person. Revenge is always dirty. Like the deep fryer.
@@AdamWEST-yu2os good analogy.
@@APR4JC Thanks. You are right about Gus. Gus didn't care about the purity of the meth as he viewed all junkies as irrational and unlikely to care what a test showed. Only someone like Gale or Walter or Max had the "pallet" to discern the difference.
I think it was his craving for revenge and torture. That's what put gus in Héctor's room. Gustavo's perfectionism caused him to straighten his tie.
You cannot just drop "so good that at one point, Hector wanted to see his balls" on me
I believe Gus behaved this way for several important reasons covered with one move.
1. He had an alibi
2. His ocd is itching, he's scratching it
3. Lyle is a predicably loyal, Gus knew he'd pull thru and do what he wanted without being asked. Further pushing away doubt.
4. Gus was going to be alone and powerless, having dominance even over a min wage employee was like air to a drowning man.
Or he could have liked seeing him get into that oven......... Niiiiiice and deep liiiike.
@@coreyhall1150 we’re not completely sure of which, just that Lyle is gone by the time Walt came to “F” everything up that Gus had built, lol!
Yeah I thought it was pretty clearly just for an alibi. The audience got to see the fryer Lyle was cleaning and it was pretty clearly spottless
@@chriso5193 He probably just found a better job.
Gus' passive aggression with Lyle, similar to Lalo with Nacho. When Nacho tried to vouch for Crazy 8's loyalty, he sensed that Lalo was evaluating his loyalty vs leadership. That's why Nacho, abruptly retorted, "You need me to take care of it?" . In case Lalo doubted his judgement. Very similar to Lyle offering to clean again and again.
Good observation
SPOILER for BCS: my all time favorite scene was a super quick shot of Gus examining the fryer one last time before he burned the whole restaurant down.
That's gotta be the mildest spoiler I've ever seen someone flag ahead of time.
@@HOTD108_ 🤣
Shows been out for years 😂 plusbif they watching this it ain't a spoiler
Lyle was involved in something he never could've known. Lalo had Gus truly shook.
The character of Gus is played so well that when he experiences normal human anxiety it gets a video breakdown
I have OCD, and I have always thought of Gus as a similarly blessed fellow.
I think you are spot on in your assessment. Gus was exerting the order and authority he had in the face of such a dynamic, uncontrollable, complex situation. Likely for the calming and clearing, and perhaps he (like myself and others I know) hold a certain superstitious belief that through our order and habits we can influence outcomes.
“I have OCD mimimimi”
You will perish the same way too.
Short version: He was pissed off that no one can do anything right, that he always has to do everything his damn self. So he tortured the one person that always tries to do everything just right.
That's not it at all
In Gus’s defense. I think he wanted to clean the fryer. Because Lyle could have left after the first attempt.
I’ve always believed that this is an allusion to MacBeth, specifically the scene where Lady Macbeth keeps scrubbing her hands despite nothing being there.
when Fring is nervous he OCD tends to come out strong and if he can clean a bathtub with a toothbrush he's not surprisingly going to see defects with the fryer in a tense situation like that knowing the plan only goes well by you losing a lot of money.
A c c e p t a b l e
Gus was just trying to sweat and stress out his employee because he’s being stressed and sweated by the cartel. Unfortunately people like this become police officers and will do the exact same thing to citizens they encounter. If they are having a horrible day, they will unleash that same thing onto the next available target they have contact with.
We get it, you’re a felon
@@freakingabagool3510 No..friendo. You mean we as in you?
My brother in christ, just enjoy the video without shoving this political jargon down people's throats.
@@ClawWitzer This was merely an observation. Nothing political.
I second your analysis. This was what I thought as well when I saw the scene. I think as an argument that cleaning is a coping mechanism of Gus' OCD, is the scene later in the final season when Gus is in the safe house, waiting for Lalo to act. In this situation he cleans the shower with a toothbrush.
Gus was frustrated because what he truly wants is to take Kyle to see the Padres take a beating from the Yankees that night and perhaps grease his union...
Kyle has the reputation of being able to pee like a race horse.
@@Damianoutlaw well you know a hard worker like Kyle holds his pee especially with his Pollos pride! Gus has Pollos pride and another kind of pride
Bad Gus joke but I'm going to keep it up even though it's not funny as conceived initially.
Hector said historically Gus is nothing but a glorified crew
Gus dipped into his product..😁
Gus's OCD caused him to not die in the parking lot at the hospital. Because he knew something was off. He does the same thing everyday all day and when Jesse insinuated something happened to Brock he put together in his mind like lightning speed that walt was trying to get him in the open.
3:38 start of explanation why he was sus
This was all for alibi purposes.
The DEA was heavily watching and scrutinizing everything involved in the dead drops.
Gus made sure that he had Lyle there right up until the drops were finished being picked up and the call came through that the surveillance was over.
Gus needed to be as far as humanly possible from this and couldn’t take any chances.
Gus was acting sus because he was sus 😂
He was testing Lyle. The Fryer Baskets weren't perfectly straight. It wasn't about it being clean because it was clean They established that It's just that the basket in the restaurant needs to be looking in tip top shape every time they leave
Gus’s obsession with cleanliness and order is a symptom of his impatience to getting revenge for Max, in order to take down the cartel he has to do it carefully and slowly over the course of 20+ years. This obviously takes extreme patience and even an individual as collected as Gus will struggle to not lash out or act irrationally. Intense cleaning is his outlet for channelling his nervous energy, anger and grief. Such a well written character.
I think I read somewhere was that he did it so Lyle remembered clearly where gus was for his alibi.
Before watching the video, when I seen the scene I thought gus was setting up an alibi
I think the thought of not being able to control something drives gus nuts. So what do people like that typically do in that situation they use the power and control they do have in order to satisfy there need for control.
Oh I thought it was the wine scene ....
One thing I could add as a possible explanation is that Gus was looking for something to clean to calm his mind a bit while he waited for the call. Lyle probably did do an acceptable job but Gus was looking for an excuse to clean something himself because he was on edge waiting. We see him obsessively cleaning when he’s on edge in season 6 waiting for Lalo to make a move after surviving the attack from Gus’ assassins
SPOILER
I was so relieved that Lyle didn’t die. I had money on him accidentally walking in on Gus’ operation and then being offed
He needed a witness for a alibi was my take
An alibi for who? Gus wasn't under investigation at this point.
Im not saying this analysis was good or bad but .. if you think its acceptable... I guess...
My mother has the same personality as Gus. He didn't do it to exercise control or create a cover story. He could have provided in depth training that would have been much more productive and been a much better cover story while still exercising control over now and the future. He was stressed and he literally saw the fryer as dirty. He expected it to be dirty so when he looked at it he saw it as dirty. The situation with the dead drops was dirty and that was transferred to his surroundings. His mind needed something to focus it on. The fryer is a difficult item to clean and will be dirty most of the time no matter how often you clean it or how well. Middle of the lunch rush even with a brand new fryer the thing will be filthy. Gus needed it to be dirty because he needed to clean. A need people without that level of OCD can't really understand. A need so deep it over rides reason, or even reality.
the analysis is acceptable, gust wanted to clean it himself, as you said be abke to control that one little thing, but lylle just stay there and offer himself, then guss have to wait, have no control, become sass to lylle, guss do not believe he can actually trust anyone and we can see he do not trust the more trustworthy of his employees… because as he is an a crysis, he is acting from the trauma under a facade of calm.
Great analysis. I agree with your perspective of this situation.
The real question should be, why was Lyle such a sniveling little ball gargler?
Because Lyle was too close, and was suspicious after Hector incident. Gus needed to take him down a few notches..
I just assumed Gus was nervous and aggravated between the dead drops and his restaurant getting blown up. When he's waiting for Lalo to resurface in the final season, we see him meticulously scrubbing the tile in his bathroom with a toothbrush out of anxiety. It seems like, when he's scared, his orderliness kicks into overdrive and he becomes hyper-obsessive about keeping himself and his surroundings pristine.
From my perspective this can be explained purely by OCD. He did not force him to clean it. He was about to do it him self. Even though Lyle in some way seemed pressured to do it him self it always was an option to do as Gus told him and leave then and there.
What furthermore can be seen as a proof to this, is the fact when Gus and Nacho tears down the restaurant. He inspected the deep fryer once again. Even though he was about to blow it up a couple of minutes later.
The scene with him "torturing" Lyle was meant to make us sit and wonder in awe what was going on in his head, and making him act in this peculiare way. And it worked to perfection. Then the second scene i mention would be where the penny finally dropped. It was as simple as he was not satisfied with the cleanliness of the deep fryer due to OCD.
your analysis is more than acceptable. Great job.
Gotta hand to Gus, everytime I watch Lyle clean the fryer I get rock hard too.
I agree - his OCD is elevated when you see his anxiety spike when he is not able to control a situation or things are not flowing as "normal". He has to direct his OCD energy somewhere - hence taking out on Lyle or scrubbing the shower with toothbrush scene.
Better call Saul is far superior to breaking bad (which is an excellent show)
I see it as a test for lye.a test of his loyalty.like when he tests his dealers.seeing that no matter what that they will say and do everything that he says without question
Gus wanted to see how loyal lyle was. He was up to los pollos hermanos standards
Bro how you gonna pass the health inspection with a dirty fryer?
Also wanna say that i hated Lilo so much..he has such a face you wanna ....ya know
I think your analysis is right, just trying to feel some sort of power and control while having to give it up elsewhere. I had a fleeting thought that he was keeping him around as a human shield but there isn't much cause to believe there would be a simultaneous hit. But I could see him viewing most people as expendable
Gus was an alpha in the streets and a bottom in the sheets
Your analyses...
Is acceptable
Lyle can play a good mark zuckerburg
I always thought it was his alibi
Perhaps it could be speculated that, on some instinctual level, Sussy Gussy wanted Lyle's lylussy.
I tried to say the same thing but couldn't say it as funny as you 😆😆
🤣🤣
He was using hun for an alibi I thought that was clear
I'm a subscriber to your channel and often enjoy your insights on movies and TV shows. Despite rating your content at 9/10 or even a solid 10, I'm surprised to see only a fraction of the subscribers you have whereas you deserve, surely in millions. It's puzzling that the movie audience may not be as introspective or may prefer not to delve into the depth intended by the directors and writers. Nevertheless, please keep up the excellent work!
Thank you!
Your analysis is great
but your intro.....
This video was acceptable.
Imo he was acted weird the whole series
We need another prequel to Better Call Saul. One which looks into Gus’ past from coming to Chile to Mexico and then to NM
naw. leave it a mystery. much better that way imho.
Bro, u do an amazing job with these vids
Thank you
I’ve always thought it’s Symbolism
Symbolic of what?
@@toddgaak422
Of how Guss likes everything to be as he pleases. Everything has to be organized
@@harrythedirty4256 Isn’t that……OCD?
Bravo Lyle
This scene which was fairly obvious to me seems to be making people overcomplicate things. gus is in a tense bad mood anyway and hes still nice and polite to Lyle, offers him to go home. Gus wanted lyle to have a reason in his head why hes there while hes there waiting on the phone call, as we see 3 separate times gus going to the back and stands looking at the phone. Hes anxious and the particular cleaning task is what he chose probably subconsciously to preoccupy himself and when Lyle keeps insisting on trying again gus respects him for it and his reason for waiting doesnt change and although i think gus would have rather clean it himself and for lyle to go home, but ultimately it doesnt matter, either way hes going to be there still.
4:20 I died 😂
Lyle was acting somewhat as a body guard/lookout for Gus. Lyle is royal and protective and knows the Salamancas.
I haven't watched this vid yet, cuz it was obvious why. He just needed an alibi there that could put him at that spot. And then once he gets phone call its good to go and he doesn't have to clean and be there anymore.....
Was that not made obvious to some people??
Gus needed Lyle to stay in his presence as long as possible so Lyle would be his alibi if ever questioned about his whereabouts that night.
He might've been testing Lyle,to see if he could recruit him into his REAL business.🤔
He has high standards for cleanliness, evident from the fact he was cleaning a shower cubicle with a toothbrush later on in the series. He sees imperfections others don't that is all I made of it
Gus was just entrenched in his fondest memories of 🇨🇱 Chile at that moment…
Poor Lyle
Gus knew people were waiting for him. He didn't want to be alone in the restaurant
I don't think Gus needed an alibi per se, and staying unusually late in the closed restaurant could raise a red flag anyway, if noticed.... But I do think the need to remain in control and alleviate anxiety by using the kid and the fryer as an outlet is a great interpretation, or at least acceptable.
I think there was more to Lyle then what we seen I think he was one of mikes guys
You nailed my thoughts on it as well!! Great breakdown as always!
What episode is this I dont remember this at all
BRO YOU DINN'T SEE THE FRYER WAS DIRTY!
Your theories always make so much sense I never could of thought of that

Why isn’t season 6 on Netflix yet ? Anyone be able to tell me ?
Weird on swedish netflix it habeen out for a while
Spot on take!
Poor Lyle
Shakainery😂😂
Why do you pronounced McGill righter than jimmy himself?
Because he’s Irish
I think this is one of the situations where the obvious explanation is the most reasonable: Gus simply wanted the alibi.
You're crazy overthinking the behavior between Lyle and Gus. Sure, Gus was frustrated over what's playing out, but Lyle's only purpose for being there so late was to provide an alibi for Gus. Nothing more.
That whole moment foreshadows Gus forcing his men to be vigilant over Lalo being alive in Season 6.
He had Lyle try to do it but Gus ended up getting the job done himself- just like Gus getting Lalo himself despite the effort of his men.
Alibi for what? Nobody was investigating Gus at that point and it went down as planned. Why would he need an alibi?
Bc he was waiting on some important news and has extreme OCD. I figured everyone knew that who watched the show.
Why was SUS acting GUS?
Gus a bit Sus ngl👀
The laugh in the opening of your videos sounds like Beetlejuice from the Howard Stern show lol
