How Gus Overcame Every Salamanca - Better Call Saul & Breaking Bad

  • Gus took down the Salamancas often indirectly. A far different approach to someone like Nacho say who had to act on a timer, and mostly face them head on, directly hiring hits on the Salamanca members, or directly inflicting them. Gus was forced to play the long and indirect game, with him being the main target to blame if Salamancas suddenly went missing. He required a strategy for each that wouldn’t create suspicion.

    The only one he didn't truly overcome was Hector. In the end Hector dragged Gus into a bloody inferno, and that was probably the best moment in Hector's life in years. It must've been Gus's worst moment too, knowing for a split second Hector (and walter) got the last laugh over him.

    • @fahholliday5374
      @fahholliday5374 Рік тому +544

      Hector was merely a useful tool to Walter, but yes, he did get the final catharsis. But had Gus not shown his hatred to Jesse and by proxy Walt, Hector would have been trapped in a hell for the rest of his days, with no hope of ever defeating Gus.

      It’s even worse because he could’ve just let Hector die when Nacho swapped his pills, but Gus saved him so he could torture him.
      But in the end, Gus hated Hector so much that I really don’t think he would’ve changed that much if he had another chance. Telling a helpless Hector how he killed everyone probably brought him more joy than actually killing the Salamanca’s and Cartel

Joaquin got the drop on Mike with a shot that left him unable to even raise his gun in retaliation while Gustavo was barely conscious from the Zafiro. I feel like Eladio was almost testing Gus's willingness to disrespect the cartel with his little joke at Hector's expense. Gus could have easily seen that Eladio didn't respect the elder Salamanca as a moment to betray his own feelings. In sociopaths this is called "duper's delight"--kind of like what Gus felt when he was torturing Hector with details of his plot--and Eladio is nothing if not a sociopathic master manipulator, so he would pick up on Gus's tell. But Gus didn't fall for it b/c he's too smart for that. Ultimately the only person who proved to be more dangerous than Gus was Walter White, because his criminal mentality is highly spontaneous and in the moment, abetted by scientific genius. While Gus is a much more linear, poker-playing type of mastermind, who extends his influence everywhere and lays traps everywhere.

    Gus won, Hector lost every chance of his name carrying on, while losing his loved ones, only people who havnt lost a younger relative would think that Hector won. We'd die for them to live in a second.
