2020 Yamaha Niken GT Now In Touring Form

- The Niken is a different kind of bike, no other way to describe it. Yamaha is experimenting with increasing front traction on a motorcycle, one way to do it is give it two front wheels but this requires new technology, new thinking, new feeling for the rider and Yamaha has thrown their R&D at it with all hands on board.

Nice Review - It is purpose built, if you have a need for the additional front end grip. Easiest bike to get to full lean I've ever ridden, but that's all confidence realted.
Once counter-point, I have to apply positive steering prevent the bike from leaning once it takes a set, the opposite of the reviewers take. Might be because I ride 2 up with luggage. Interesting.
I own one, great bike for getting the pegs down, with fractional risk of losing the front end, it understeers vs washing out and crashing. I've literally had the pegs grind a couple time, 2-up riding backroads. DW loves the bike, as an owner of many toys, this is her "favorite". Yes, it's heavy, really only noticeable at low speeds, front brakes are high effort, work great at full braking though. OEM luggage is crap.
Not the bike for the close-minded, conformists, or poseurs. It is for people that like things that flat out work in the real world, and are less concerned about the bravado crowd that talk instead of doing. Great bike.
The cheap panniers are a mistake. Zips! They should have used the panniers off the two-wheeler. I agree that the engine is too small for this weight. It needs a litre engine. You are the first reviewer to mention the need to apply more pressure to the handlebar on corners.
Yes - the bags are junk. Also, my Niken falls into corners, the opposite of what he is saying, strange. Wrong tire pressures greatly affect that though.
Love your reviews but...I was given the opportunity to demo this bike last weekend and didn't experience the lack in power like you said you did. I found all the power one would ever need. Maybe the bike you were on wasn't broke in yet.
Great review Scott. I just can’t get my head around the way the bike looks! BTW , going to try the lamb dish you cooked a few weeks ago.👍😀
Nice honest review... this is just not for me... agree strange motorcycle
Hope you enjoy it!
I have found that doing all the different rubs/sauces/flavors/etc. is often too much and just these 4 basic ingredients (salt pepper garlic & rosemary) with the right (wood) smoke is perfect for bringing out the natural tast of the meat.
Let me know how it was! 👌
thanks for this very great review. I think this bike looks amazing and is very unique and a bolt statement, something that needs to be done from time to time to shake of the mainstream.
Still am I not quite sure what's the target audience is. my main concern would be the maintenance cost, that probably will also keep away a chunk of customers - assuming this is a bike for very dedicated ppl this might be no factor in the end and only in my head.
I applaud Yamaha for having the guts to try to build something this insane and bring it to market.
Yes, that's exactly why I wanted to review it. :)
I like the stability and safety features of the Niken. Looking forward to my future purchase. I believe Yamaha will improve the overall built, better electronics and better panniers instead of the standard ones.
Thanks Scott for the great reviews as always
Very good job Scott. I like your videos. Simply and honest,I think. Two thumbs up for u.keep going 👏👍😜🇬🇷
Needs the MT-10 MOTOR from what you are eluding too. Someone call me Yamaha to get on it...
Yes, at this weight it really needs more power, it wasn't bad at low speeds but at highway speeds it was really lacking, and the arrow-dynamics of that front well, let's just say it's not arrow-dynamic. 😒
Right, or possibly even better, the SuperTen motor.
You need to test ride for yourself! The one I test road never needed to be down shifted to pass at highway speeds! It had plenty! As you know, never take one reviewers opinion!
I do not like the bike but I am impressed by Yamaha`s attitude in making it.
Didn`t they make a hub centre steered bike some years back ? Did not sell ,and I do not think this will make them any money either but for creativity and willingness to stretch the boundaries....
Nice job Yamaha !
Scott, you're almost there, just one wheel less and you'll finally have tested that illusive Tracer 900GT.
Great review as always, though I am not sure what market this bike is really aimed at.

FN AWESOME.
YAMAHA SEND ME ONE. I WILL

When the Niken was released I really wanted to make a testride. But for now I I'm quite indifferent about it.
I know that I say this all the time, but in my humble opinion a touring bike is supposed to have shaft-drive and not a chain-drive.
And you are right, the engine needs an upgrade. Something like the MT-10-motor, but with less power and more torque. I think a 130 to 140 pony's should do the job just fine, right? In addition the gas tank from the FJR1300 (about 25l anyway) and one is good to go.
Interesting ... It's quite the opposite in my case: I consider the front brake of my NiKen (2020/2021) as sharp and effective. Instead I was kinda disappointed by the rear brake, that wants to be pressed down quite a bit to even feel it. But when stopping I always had to let the front brake go again, since I always pulled it too strong at first. Maybe I'm not used to modern bikes, though. But in comparison to some older models I really cannot complain about the brake, quite the opposite.
Yea, a lot of the bikes I get have little or no km on the clock, this one had around 8km on it, so the brakes were not "seated-in" yet. That is why I don't like being the first on a bike, too many things don't feel right until they are "broke-in" and I think this was the case with this bike.
take care,
Scott
@@NothingToProve Possibly, yes. I got mine with 2000km on the clock already ... so I might have indeed just missed this first phase.
Iz it a bird? No! Iz it a plane? No! Iz it Nothing to Prove on a Yammie Niken? Yes! Strange object...courageous effort from Yamaha, but not for authentic riders. I saw many of these spaceships at the Tour de France last year, with riding reporters and cameramen on it. That seemed a nice application!
Hey Scott. Thanks for this piece. All I can say about this thing is - ICK. It is terminally ugly. I am not opposed to the technology per se. This might even be a nice solution for some. However, I keep hearing about the crappy brakes, which would be a major concern for me. They should have given it a bigger tank as well. Overall It's just not for me. I refuse to own something I have to sneak up on to ride!
Make one that two older rider can mount. Make a version with lower seats like a trike; that mixes the beefiness of the Niken with the semi-encloses design philosophy of the Yamaha MW-Vision. Make it and Yamaha will have the Can-Am Spyder killer.
I like the Niken a lot. I think now would be a good time to re-launch it as more people are wanting alternative methods of getting to work.
The switch gear looks like it's come of an FJR.
Add another wheel & you’ve got a convertible!🤣 I’ve watched several other vids on UA-cam etc when this first launched, but yeah, no, yeah....NA! Good review Scott👍🏼
Good engineering excercise but thats where it ends.Unnecessary potential maintenance.Extra brake pads, extra tyres etc etc.Thanks.
This would be awesome if it had the MT10 engine 🔥. Knowing its weight and many other factors, the mt09 engine will not suffice the power to weight ratio of this beast
love your reviews Scott! and about the bike, the double sets of gold forks really stand out, and not in a good way😬 I think you gotta go with a single thumb though...it seemed like you hesitated with that extra half and gave it up out of sympathy for the bike.🤔😁
It's a solid and safe bike!!!
Dangerous riding on the wrong side of the road! 😉 This Yammie is not for me!! Regards.
I’m with you Scott. I don’t love it and I don’t hate it. I do love that Yamaha produced such an out of the box concept.
Hmm would this grab rail fit a normal tracer? I hate individual grab handles
Great review Scott
I have nothing to say about it, "Neutral" is the right thing to say....
Good review Scott, got too say not for me as well but bravo to Yamaha for trying something new.
Good video, thanks.. not crazy about the orange housings .. I want to see the Honda Neowing when it comes out!
It was some short Japanese mans pipe dream that came to reality because he has money/resources
Your honesty and your ability to properly evaluate this bike or any bike, makes you superior to so many others. If a person likes this bike, you have properly given your educated thoughts as you have spent time with the bike, helping others to make a decision about buying the bike, Thanks for another quality video with so much enjoyable insight. Stay cool and ride with peace. Excellent !
Thank you, it's comments like this that keep me going. Thank you once again.
take care,
Scott
Loving your videos. Just got my full license last friday :) now i have to wait on my new drivers license and i can go pick up my first bike, the 2020 Indian Scout Sixty :D
Greetings from Belgium !
Thank you,
I love the Scout, it's really a great bike, does everything well, and the looks, well let's just say if I was to get a cruiser, the Scout is number one on my list 👍😁
Scott, does it differ from a two wheeler when stopped? Is it any more stable? Mb. If you were short is there any advantage?
No, no difference, it will fall over, so it's just like two wheels.
Would love a review from you on the Tracer 900 GT
Just not a fan of the bike. I think it is an interesting engineering endeavor but as a bike that captures my soul.... no. It just doesn't do anything for me. Ordered two of your shirts though... so that's good!!
Thank you Scott!
Let me know your opinion on the quality, I picked this particular print on demand service because they have the highest ratings for fit/finish/quality but they are also one of the most expensive (so I hope "you get what you pay for"). And they have two print locations, North America and U.K. so if I order samples they come from the U.K. and if you order they come from the States. So I want to know what the quality is for the American guys 😁👍
Let me know and thanks for gettin' some merch!
Scott
The Niken is purpose built, and if you have no practical use for the additional front end grip, there is no reason to buy this heavier machine. It's funny how easy it is to get it full lean, which I have never done on any of my previous sport-bikes.
The 2020 is listed $1000 cheaper than a 2019, what does that say?
It says a £1000 price reduction.
Thanks for the good content Scott :)
A good ride for Paris where 3 wheel machines are common.
Funny but sometimes in life the funniest things are funny because they are true 🤔😁
Needs the CP-4
Yep, agreed!
Thank you so much!!

the niken must be the biggest flop for yamaha
Me FTW! :)
LOL! Du bist der Gewinner!

dankedanke!
Who is this bike for? What advantage does it offer?
