    Today on the channel, I'm driving what many consider to be the ideal classic Ferrari - the 328 GTS. For a long time one of the cheaper ways to get into the brand, the 328 bridged the gap between the iconic 308 and the odd duck that is the 348. Why is it so loved, and is it a good drive?

    I’ve wrenched on my 328 for 16 years. Never waited more than a week for a part, never spent more than a $250 for a part, other than a set of red OEM plug wires which could be replaced by any number of other options available for nothing if you don’t need red insulation. Many many parts are shared with Porsche, Fiat and other cars, as they’re full of Bosch components just like every other euro car of that era. If you’re thinking of a 328, don’t listen to these knuckleheads who pretend to know this car and tell you how unreliable and expensive they are. It’s nonsense from people whose main goal is to seem knowledgable on the internet. Come to the Ferrarichat forum, we will happily tell you everything you need to know from owners just like me who drive and work on these cars as a matter of routine.

    As a happy owner of a 328 GTB for the last 14 years I’m glad you like it, great review! Having owned a 456 and a Testarossa I confirm it is much cheaper to run and very reliable. On the exhaust side I’ve replaced the original with an Ansa, it sounds great while keeping the typical 328 tone without trying to sound screamy like the later cars.
    This car is a joy to drive as much as it is to look at. Definitely a keeper

    Descendant of the legendary Dino 246 and then 308, the 328 is an extremely functional car (no fake air intakes or fake exhaust pipes or other solutions dictated by marketing). Designed and desired by men saturated with a passion for cars. The engine, in a central/transverse position, is really behind the "pilot"'s shoulders. 40% self-locking differential and zero electronics (the only assistance is the servo brake). Everything about this splendid car takes us back to the racing world of times gone by. What can we say about the two splendid aluminum fuel tanks, positioned between the doors and the wheel wells of the driving wheels? And the sealed water radiator with the vent on the front hood? It's true, the interior heats up so much that in winter you don't need heating: comfort be damned!
    Not to mention the smell of Connolly leather when you get on board. In other words, the 328 involves all our senses and every aspect of it finds coherence in its essence, as if it were a living being. It is no coincidence that Enzo Ferrari defined his creatures as "living mechanics". Congratulations for the video document. Thank you.

    The 328 is my all-time dream car. No other car on the road had the same effect as when I see one of these, although a 308 comes close. By modern standards, most hot hatches would cause it a lot of trouble, but it is just the most beautiful car.

      308 has the better looks imo.
      The front is more like the 288 gto (my favorite ferrari of all time) whereas the 328 looks more like a 512 bb.

    The only Ferrari I ever had was a black 328 GTS. Like 30y ago. When cold, you can forget about shifting from 1st to 2nd. Just go straight to 3rd.
    Roof off above about 200 kph the roof panel in the pouch behind the seats starts to lift up. I remember chasing a Alpina B6 3.5 convertible on German Autobahn and I was only marginally faster.
    It did however turn heads unlike any other car I had. So much so that it was one reason for selling it. Together with being rather hard work to drive both in city and long distance.
    Never had a Ferrari since.

    Loved the video. I took my 308 QV shopping (Costco) a few weeks ago and I had a guy the same age as me (50 something) come straight up and say that seeing the 308 had made his day. We had a lovely chat about ownership and by the time we'd finished the car had drawn a younger crowd, with several asking if it was ok to take pictures / video etc. Last week I took my 458 Spider to the same Costco and all I got was some very disapproving looks. The morale of the story is most people are nostalgic for life in general but classic Ferraris in particular. Merry Christmas J.

    Great video JayEmm. I am very fortunate to have three Ferraris. The 328 definitely is a sweetspot. It is like putting on those comfortable runners for a jog or your favourite slippers. I have a 1996 328 GTS (originally sold through Charles Pozzi in France, build is Nov 1985). I have a 1990 Testarossa and that can be a little more tempermental. Final car is a 2011 458 Italia. I am frequently asked what is my favourite car. My reply: "the last one I drove".

      Donnie, your selection of the 308/328 progression is right on the mark... the 288GTO just jumped about 10 price brackets! 🤣 Many years ago I worked in a Ferrari shop and logged many miles in a 308 and a few in a 328. As I told my friends who questioned me about driving them, driving a 308 GTB/GTS is like putting on a comfortable pair of old blue jeans and just getting on down the road. They're easy to drive quickly and I found to be very predictable. If you tend to drive hard and really push it, a 308GTB is probably a better choice. The solid roof gives you a stiffer chassis. It you're more of a fast cruiser and bit less competitive, the open top GTS is just fine and the breeze on a sunny day is very nice. My wife liked that one the best. If you find a well cared for example, you're liable to have a lot of fun... be careful... they can be addictive!! 😂🤣

    Why oh why did I swap my 1988 328 GTB in 2004 for a 360 Modena? My first Ferrari was a 1989 328 GTB that I bought in 1993 with 12000 miles on the clock. I know 20-20 hindsight is a wonderful thing but what the hell. I was lucky enough to have a 1995 355 Berlinetta from 2011 to 2021 and the sound from that (with a standard exhaust) was enough to make the hairs on the back of your head to stand up. Swapped it for a 2000 456GTM because I thought it was a good idea to at least own one front engined Ferrari V12 before I shuffled off my mortal coil. I would love to get back into a 328 GTB but I'm not sure my wife would be on board with that! Love from a (very) rainy Otford, Kent.

    I was given a ride in this exact model back in '91 in Monaco. Definitely the sweet spot, and this or the 308 are my favourite Ferraris. It would not start at first, but with a boost it ran. We took it up the winding roads above Cap d'Ail France. Aside from the smell of gasoline inside, I was in heaven. That exhaust note right behind my head was biblical at the time. Sadly, the driver(chauffeur of the rich owner) admitted that it's horribly unreliable. I was allowed to sit in the brand new Diablo as well.

    My 1983 308 GTSi is my 3rd all-time favorite cars I've ever owned and I've been fortunate enough to have owned some cool cars over the past 35 years. Bought mine in December 1995 and sold it in 1999 and loved every minute of it. It was the right weight and size, though not a huge amount of power but it did sound great with the TUBI installed by the previous owner. While I'm all for cars with great character, my focus for the past 10 years has been on getting as much track time as I can. The last thing you care about is a brand's history or charisma when you're barreling down into Turn 17 at Sebring at 140mph, you just want great brakes and precision. The 2 best cars I've ever owned were a 2020 Porsche 718 GT4 and my current GT4RS. Would love to add a 308 or 328 for those Sunday morning drives.

Love the RED rear bonnet video of this 328. I have a 1985 308 QV US and prefer that do the 328. It looks less aged inside and has more room (I am 6' 3") than the 328. I definitely agree about parts. Especially when compared to Porsche. When I had my old 3.2 Carrera I could buy about anything it needed new. Not so with the Ferrari. But I think it comes down to how much Ferrari still changed thing from year to year and market to market at the time. I have a US 1977 308 GTB and there are parts on it that are not just carb era specific and US market specific, but also 1977 specific. As they changed quite a few things on the US cars for 1978 dropping the power down due to emissions. However this means for some things in searching for I’m limited to the one or two hundred or so 308s that were sold in the USA in 1977 which can be very frustrating indeed. Still amazing cars though full stop. Haven’t driven a 328 yet but I’d love to so I could compare to the carb 308.

The best part of the scene was easily the sound of the 308. Seriously, look it up and see for yourself. Imagine my shock when I first heard the car in real life and realised that a flat-plane crank Ferrari V8 sounds basically like a Honda 2.0 unit and nothing like it did in the film.

    i was fortunate enough to own one of these when i lived in the south of france one thing that may not matter too much here is how hot it gets in the cabin with the roof off. the heat from the front mounted radiator rolls up the bonnet and into the cabin at low speeds making things very very toasty..still miss it though and could not afford one any more 😞

    You should drive the 308/328 GTB and GTS back to back. That would be worth a comparison video! A Tubi is a better option for a 308/328 than a valved Capristo. You can swop yourself in a hour or so even without a hoist.

  • @markrivers2651
    @markrivers2651 5 місяців тому

    Great video, really enjoyed this one James! I really struggle with the value of these 328s. In my opinion, they’re not a patch on the cosmetic wow of a 308, and the interior is a bit in no man’s land (much prefer the 308s) - yet comparatively, a lot more valuable? Yes, a little more power, but these days, who’s going to drive either hard enough to notice. The price point they occupy is F355 territory, and if you’re going to buy one at £90k rather than a 355 at the same price because maintenance bills are less, then that’s mental - you’re paying £90k for a car, so should be able to afford the bills! My 5pence worth anyway!

    • @GTC4cam
      @GTC4cam 5 місяців тому

      The cost of servicing the 355 is most likely why they trade for similar money. They have for at least 15 years. Most people love the 355 (I love it too), but engine out every 3 yrs for the belts? In California that is very expensive. We pay $200 per hour for an independent here now. That adds up and has very real impacts on wealth over time, especially when I can work on the 328 myself for free. And all you get is a little extra performance and that 355 sound. That has value, but to me, wasn’t worth it. Plus the 328 was one of the last cars produced under Enzo. He was long gone by the 355. Some people don’t care about that, but he’s gone and never coming back. As a collector, that’s meaningful to me.

    The 328 is peak Ferrari as an ownership experience; I enjoyed 7 happy years with mine before moving on to a manual 412 (to get the kids in). Rust isn't an issue (unless car has been crashed) and running costs not too bad (for a Ferrari). Go to a good indie, like Italia Autosport, and you shouldn't have any issues at all, while enjoying a fabulous looking car that is plenty fast enough for today's roads. Standard exhaust doesn't sound good, though - mine was transformed with a Tubi.

    Love the 308 gtb and 308 gt4, not sure I'd like to own either though. I've had some experience on both. Transfer shafts and gears made from chocolate endless oil leaks from cam seals, especially on earlier cars, as well as the typical period correct electrical faults. 355 Berlinetta is The most beautiful Ferrari ever made imo, but very expensive to maintain. As much as I would love to own a Ferrari, for now anyway I'll keep hold of my 987 Spyder.

    I'm wondering if the 308-328 (even the DINO) would have been that popular if they did not have these grooves (air intakes) on both sides incorporated in the design? They are making all the difference and it is in details like that you can tell a designer like LEONARDO FIORAVANTI is a genius.

    I've got an 89, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Cars of this era are not fast in the modern sense, but they are SO communicative and an absolute hoot to drive! I drove my friend's 360 Modena once, and it was nowhere near as fun as the 328, despite being a bit faster. I've also had several air cooled 911's of the similar years, and while those are more or less comparable in terms of performance and driving dynamics, the 328 is more dramatic and brings a much more special feeling. Also, you're committing a mortal sin if you don't replace the factory muffler with a Tubi! So advise the owner of this one to go ahead and buy that Capristo!

    These little V8 have no sound, caused by the crankshaft-layout. It's acustically a 4 cylinder, no matter what you try to do with the exhaust (which in the end just makes it louder, but not sound better).
    Funny thing: Back in the 80ties I owned a Fiat 124 spider and at a club meeting at a Fiat dealer a 208 turned up. When the owner was out of sight I tried it - yes, I could open up the drivers door with my Fiat key...😎

    Absolutely gorgeous cars and I love the 328 over the 308 in looks too. The issue is you can buy a 3.2 Carrera for less thats almost bulletproof and has the same or better performance. These 308s/328s were never great performers given their price. A 1987 911 Turbo which was about the same price new in 1987 would leave a 328 in the tumbleweeds. But I get the Ferrari panache and exclusivity and just on looks alone they are wonderful eye candy. I would try to find an off-color one like white, silver, yellow, or blue. Probably 85% of them are Corsa Red on Beige.
