This week on #DriveEveryFerrari we present a perfect example of the highly collectable Ferrari 328, and it’s the GTB hard top - which is rarer than an F40!
Kindly lent to the CarGuys by friend of the channel, Paul, and filmed on location at DK Engineering, this sweet classic Ferrari mid-engined V8 Berlinetta is a prime candidate for the CarGuys garage, but what’s it actually like to drive and live with?
Well, look no further than a whole episode on this nippy Rosso Corsa beast, including its history, special features, a look at that super-cool Pininfarina body, the interior, the engine, a full road test, and of course, some Beans.
Is this the best entry level Ferrari? Should you own one? Should WE own one? How does it feel on modern, potholed roads? Is it fast? Does it feel old? What’s with all those weird switches? And also, how you can tell a 328 from a 308?
All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.
    Thank you for watching

Lets not forget that the F40 and of course the 288 were based on the basic bones of the 308/28. A truly iconic Ferrari for any generation of enthusiast - and quite straightforward to maintain too. 👍👍

That is gorgeous. I've never seen an F40 in the flesh, but I have seen a 328. My Dad took me to Bradford (the nearest Ferrari dealer) when I was a kid to have a look, as I was such a Ferrari fan.

The boys are back together with their usual banter and fizzy winkies for a fabulous episode on the classic 328 GTB. An iconic Ferrari, who didn't lust after one in the 70s? A mate of mine had one and he was dating a gorgeous, well endowed blonde to boot. Stuff that dreams were made off. Great episode guys. Loving the solid gold, Damien.

If I may toss out a suggestion, it could be quite interesting to hear the owners of the cars you review to give their thoughts on their ownership experience as compared to your own after having driven the cars. Assuming the owners are on board of course 😊
In any event, these videos are always a pleasure to watch and let’s hope Jason finds the 328 GTS of his dreams 🤙🏻

Very good review as usual and I fully agree with you if you compare 328 to a 308 carburettor version. But if you compare to a 308 Quattrovalvole, apart from a more little displacement, in term of practicality it's exactly the same (with the benefit of the old toggle switch compared to the plastic ones). And yes ...I own one so I definitely admit to be partisan😂😂😂.

I owned one for a few years back around the turn of the century. You could pick them up for about £30k then. They're a good car to scratch the Ferrari itch with - not too expensive to own ( though we are talking about a 30 yr old Ferrari which was not that well made when new, so anything is possible to go wrong ).
It's now really car for a Sunday morning blast. Too compromised really for a GT. I took it once for a tour around Italy and many limitations soon become apparent ( luggage space, appalling ventilation, lovely noise for a short while but tiring noise for a long while ). Steering is heavy at low speed but lovelier thru bends. Not quick but more than fast enough. Most will have many, many owners. It is the type of car you enjoy for a few years and then move on to something else...

Thanks guys, a brilliant video yet again! I know Paul and he certainly is one for detail which is why he car is such a lovely example. I also have a 328 GTB so was fascinated to hear your thoughts on the car which are very similar to my mine, except for with the cornering, as I find the GTB handles like it is on rails, the cornering is so tight and the feedback is in a different league to modern day cars which are so lumpy and heavy in comparison. As a 35 year old car, it is never going to compare to driving a modern car - but it is such an event every time I drive it, it provides so much drama! Keep the videos coming please!!! 😀🙏🙏👍

Another great video thanks! Started as a dream looking in the window at Maranello concessionaires, I’ve owned my 328 GTS for nearly 20 years now. The turn in is actually great when you brake before the corner and accelerate round, it just squats lower and feels really rewarding when you nail it, (just like the manual box) Think the roof off in the spider adds to the driving experience too. Drove mine to LeMans with two peoples luggage, a tent and fold up chairs in the boot! Still love it as much every time I see it even now..

I had a 328 gts about 20 years ago.Maxxed it on the autoroute in a foreign land… it was an ‘experience’ shall we say. At 270kph, it felt like the tyres were barely touching the ground. The car was moving around a lot and even with a 5 lane motorway, breaking was a buttocks clenching moment. The stock sound is pretty poor, needs a well chosen exhaust. Controls are very heavy (steering) and make the car feel bigger than it is. Oh, and it likes a drink! For comparison a 964 c2 manual is a much nicer drive. The 328 is the prettiest Ferrari of the past 50 years though.

Look! Jasons here ..328? dude really?
I am a 308 dude ,if i want to commit the original sin ,give me the apple not a bottle of apple juice .
Like almost all redesigned Ferraris , the 328 feels like a downgrade in the aspect that it is a "fixed" version of what came originally,it maybe be the better version but its not the BEST version.
Its a constant contradiction but if you collect anything, you know it . Rarer sometimes, doesn't mean more valuable and upgraded doesn't mean the best(even if factually it is).
    Keep the shirt though !

Some thoughts. The injected 308s probably give you a lot of the more modern power delivery feel, with the classic looks of the interior and exterior. I’m surprised at you saying it doesn’t like fast hairpins. I have a 308 and it’s a peach in the corners. It’s a ball to drive.
Either way, Jason should buy one. I’ve had mine for 12 months and it still puts a huge grin on my face. I’d really struggle to part with it.

I enjoyed the review guys! I was waiting to hear what you thought of Paul’s great car!
I’m happy to hear Jason is thinking of one now. Good choice!
But you both know full well you can’t compare these cars to anything newer in terms of braking or handling performance, or driving position. And nobody should buy these cars with practicality in mind. There is nothing practical about a Ferrari.
That never entered into my head once when I bought my 328 or Testarossa. I think the main reason guys like us buy these cars is for the experience and how it makes you feel. I think your viewers would like to hear that!?No new car can give you this satisfaction when you drive them the way their were intended on the right roads. You don’t need to be going Mach stink to be mesmerized by the car and the event. If you’re a product of the 70’s, you want a true analog, Ferrari “experience” the 328 is the best one to live with! Period! Some good for thought. Cheers Jason #jcr_cars

    • @kavinskysmith4094
      @kavinskysmith4094 11 місяців тому

depends on the car, not all TR's were created Equal, some were slower, others faster, as such is the nature of a hand made car, which people often forget, and the 308 series of engine based cars is no different, like with the 308 one guy fixes it up and does nothing to overhaul it and it runs like you wouldnt believe
another the things been down for well over a year and a half as he upgrades the fuel system, and TR's are much the same
also the 328 doesnt hold together when you staple two turbos and boost it to 600 horsepower, the TR does
just Ask John Carmac! which is probably why the F40 used the 308 and not the 328 lump,
as all those numbers give you is a vague idea based on a general example that you dont have access to, the real secret is in the weight balance and the bias and the gearing
as one is geared for 160, the other 180 and revs to 5,600 RPM, the 308's like 6 or 7, and cant even do a burnout given how high the power is in the rev range unless you really dump the clutch
now a 308/328 would smoke a corvette however, atleast a pre 89 one before they updated to the L89 and got the power up and kicking, especially with that god awful crossfire system
which removed a full 1K of revs on every engine it was attached to, and then there's an owner in the UK who just wasted 40 K putting a tesla in his TR when all he needed to do was put some 3.11's in the rear, like I hope he kept the reciet and the motor
as what a waste of a perfectly good car, like every problem on a TR is fixable, they had different tire and rim sizes, the steering rack changed, they went to a double disc clutch in 86' and you can fit the 512TR gearbox to a TR,
just find someone who can set it up and go with it as is, not DO THAT to it.

What a drool-worthy video, gentlemen! Two people in love with an older car which, quite frankly, I would trade in my granddaughter's inheritance to own! Thank you both for making it so much fun. One comment I just have to make - nothing to do with the car - is that I thought that the roads around my part of Cambridgeshire were bad, but I've never seen such pothole-ridden tracks masquerading s main roads in my life. My current fun/weekend toy is a 2015 SLK AMG version, which shakes the lenses out out my spectacles on our local roads - G*d alone what it would be like around Chorleywood.......

I own a 328GTS and have done so since 2005, The car is rewarding to drive, I really do give it beans.
The ideal Ferrari having very low and simple maintenance requirements for the cost of ownership. This simplicity is very appealing.
You have to learn to drive them fast, being an old 1980s superbike rider it all makes sense with speed, a generous but delicate right foot in the apex as you discover the beautiful balance front to rear on exit with beans powering you through the other side, the car is very predictable and rewarding.
The absolute JOY is not having anything electronic, No ABS, No Power steering, Just you and classic Ferrari with many compromises making it real.
The Ferrari 328 GTS is a very capable car on tighter, flowing back and mountain roads in Australia. Join the fun and mix it up with the new more modern generations leaving them aghast at how good the Ferrari 328 really is. You will never have to say Sorry Boys, I couldn't keep up :) :)

They all will have their problems but the 308/328s do have some benefits in that regard. Every major service item can be addressed with the engine in. Cam belts/tensioners/belt drive bearings are done through the os wheel arch. Clutch through the new without even the need to pull the box. They are old tech, mechanical injection. Even the electronic ignition is extremely basic. Furthermore parts are for the most part very cheap from aftermarket suppliers. I bought an injected 308 that had been in storage for 31 years. I do all the work on it myself they are that simple which is not unusual for us 3x8 owners. They are probably your best bet for a first Ferrari on a “budget”

Cool video. Juste a little correction : the Mondial 3.2 wheels are not related to the ABS version. The ABS came before the concave wheels though, and after that followed by the Mondial convex wheels replacement. So you find convex wheels with no ABS (and upgrated suspension lower arms).

I owned a 328GTS in Chiaro Blue for 6 years back in the 80’s, I px’d it for a Lamborghini Diablo VT which was beast, made the Ferrari feel a tad pewney !

Ironically I just purchased a 328 GTS this last week and completely agree with your assessment. If you don't like classic cars you won't like this car. If you do, you will love it. It is one of the prettiest cars Ferrari ever mass produced.

@@shaniapearcey How much $$? In the USA? In looking around go from 80 to 140K depending on year, mileage, condition, records. There's a wide range to pick from. GTS much easier to get than GTB. About 6 times as many GTS's were made than GTB. 328's go for a little more than 308 in apples to apples condition.

Good review guys.Easier to own and faster than my '77 GTB but lacks that classic interior and induction sounds imho.Considering that Niki Lauda had input in development and Gilles Villeneuve had a GTS commuting from Monaco to Maranello it has a touch more fizz and can still produce a few goosebumps after 30+ years @ Monza etc..

Leonardo Fioravanti revised the range of the 328 the 3.2 QV Mondial which shared the same lights and front vents as the Testarossa, The front of the 412 was completely different so no idea why that was in the vid??. Anyway, loving the previous vids on the F40 what a machine!!! and yes, of course why not mention it's the same V8 in the 308 328 3.2 QV Mondial F40 and 288 "obviously turbo charged etc with more power in the F40 and 288 but the DNA can all be traced back to the Dino V6 which goes all the way back to the Ferrari Dino Sharknose... Anyway another You Tube channel for people interested in Ferrari is "Barkaways" they have done some fantastic incredibly well detailed video's of the F40 and it's masterpiece V8, "highly recommended" to watch Barkaways channel for all people interested in Ferrari history....

I'd love to know; when you say it has a "modernized" feel, does the 328 loose the analog sensation of vs. the 308? There's something special about the analog feel of old car...if that makes sense.

I watched the 308 video a few times and it seems to me your faces were actually showing a much wider grin, especially when hearing the induction noise from the carbs. The 328 may be more modern, but is that a good thing actually? Outdated features, isn’t it the whole point of driving a classic car? My heart goes to the original carbureted 308 with Bakelite switches. Looking forward to the test of the 308 GT4 😊

Stunning car, though I prefer the purer, sharper lines of the 308. I also suspect (from what I've read), that because the gts body structure isn't as rigid as the berlinetta it may not be as rewarding to drive fast.

A quick look for a 328 GTB in the US shows them priced at $189K to $200K. Somehow there are some GTS models hitting around $300K. The 308 can be had for under $100K. You could have a 599 GTB Fiorano for a little less. Pre-COVID the 599 could be had for under $100K if you looked really hard. I have to say I think the 308 is prettier, they sell for under $100K but up to $180K. Crazy prices. BTW, one could get the same year Mondial for $55K to $80K. I’ve been tracking a specific coupe that is available for $57K.

The zip tied cables are not correct. Shouldn't;t be there, would lose a point at a Concorso event as well as a non genuine coolant header sticker too.
The dashboard upper is vinyl not leather.
The bits of black foam over the centre console and around the switches and a big bit stuck in the centre "small" air vent is from the a/c lines breaking down.
Can be fixed but a fiddly job.

My 328GTS doesn't understeer at all, am least not at these speeds. But then I have 4 new Michelin tyres. My brakes could also be better.
But I would love to try a GTB, the GTS doesn't have the best torsional rigidity to say the least. I might prefer the handling of the GTB.
But, just like you, it is a bit clostrophobic and there is a bit of sound resonance + ok but not great Aircon. So I find it tiring with the hard top on but much much better without the roof.
    So structural rigidity vs comfort.
And I own a F355 Berlinetta ... And prefer the 328 to drive because it is easier in town with the low down torque, the tiny steering wheel, the speed bump clearance... And I really don't like the F355 steering even if it is a more capable car.
(I should be less modest about my cars because my GTS is more concourse than this one... Yet I didn't rate it as concourse with my insurer)

Is it a security feature? (the hidden door handle) as may be possible to easily steal an eighties ferrari but they'd struggle to get out and lets face it they'd be spotted instantly! unless in Monaco of course...
