I remember in Ratatouille the song plays twice. Once when Linguini and Remy's lives thrive off the restaurant's success and again at the end of the movie. It's almost as if the song is what holds the movie together. I feel that Ratatouille is underappreciated in this time and age. It should get more recognition nowadays.
Like the characters themselves i guess. One without the other is just a clumsy man, and the other a talented mouse but a mere mouse nonetheless
Technically it plays at the very beginning of the movie.
i adore pixar, but it’s one of the few that i feel i could truly watch back to back and still not get tired of it, it’s such a great movie ❤️

I feel like this song talks about hunger both literally and metaphorically. That hunger to achieve something new and being tired of endless failures and being too scared to hope. But then still trying your best to achieve your dream. That is essentially an apt description of Remy's character arc in this movie. And according to me I see this song as something he wishes to tell his father.
Reading this comment makes more sense why this song came into my mind randomly... not only is it a soft, beautiful song but also a signal that things are finally going in the right direction in my life for once, actually.
first sentence is "Dreams of lovers are like good wine" and after "weakened by hunger, I am unhappy", so the person is hungry for love. Love is compared to a good meal

Lyrics:
The dreams of the lovers are just like fine wine
They both can bring happiness and even sorrow
Weakened by hunger, I am unhappy
Stealing at the same time everything I can get
Because nothing in life is free
Hope is a fastly consumed meal
I am now used to skip meals
It is sad to feed a lonely thief
Between us, I am bitter, I want to suceed
Because nothing in life is free
Never will I be told again
That reaching the stars isn't made for me
Let me astonish you all and begin to soar
We will all have a treat soon
The party shall finally begiiiiiin
Aaaand take out the bottles, the troubles are over
I am setting the table of my new life
I am happy knowing this new destiny
A lifetime lived hidden, now I'm finally free
The feast is on the way
A lifetime lived hidden, now I'm finally free
The feeeast is ooon the waaay.

Thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Definitely my favorite animated movie today. It's WAY ahead of its time. They don't make animated movies as close to this good nowadays. @Phellype Miranda yess omgg german is sooo hard!!
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new, an extra-ordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto: 'Anyone can cook.' But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more.
hands down my favorite scene in the movie.

this song reminds me of my cousin sister,
she was at her lowest a few months ago: jobless, homeless and her parents told her that if she didn't find work soon, they'd marry her off. She introduced me to this song during that time and we all told her to hang in there. Today she has a well-paying research job, moved out of our house and she even is on her way to buy an apartment with her fiance. Really, every time I listen to the lyrics and understand them, I understand why she liked this song so much.

Thanks to the English subtitles, it's pretty easy to discern the meaning of this song.
Le Festin, or The Feast, is a song dedicated to life, more specifically, Remy's life. But it can apply to all lives universally; life at the start is not set in stone, there are happy moments and sad ones. And we dream of finding happy ones all the time, we use anything necessary, we lie, we cheat, we steal.
This was what Remy's life, as a rat, was supposed to be, but he found heaven in cooking, it was his redemption, his dream, and he'd do anything for it, puppeteer a sort of lame human being even, but I digress.
But as said in the song, "Nothing in life is free." So our past actions are always paid in the future, we are always haunted by it, and it eventually came to Remy, Gusteau's almost closed down due to his actions. To redeem himself, he keeps chasing his dreams, now with the help of his once chastised family, he eventually reaches it, but not in the way he expects. Life is the same, we chase our dreams, hoping to redeem ourselves, but our dreams are veiled in the stars, making them difficult to reach, but that's alright, as said by Ego, "Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere". We tried, and that's enough. And once the price is paid, life is the a feast worth enjoying.
Hope, the main dish, is eaten right away, but that doesn't matter, for once we achieve our dreams, the troubles won't matter, we'll keep on living, enjoying the feast as we go, good times and bad times ahead, we take it all on, bit by bit, bite by bite.
I love this song, it fills me with so much nostalgia, anyways thanks for reading this far, and I hope you keep enjoying the feast of life.
This is really great interpretation

French is so trippy because none of the word words are spelt how they’re pronounced-
Father Louis Willam Suga Adams the third because it’s not phonetic that’s why 🙄🙄 duh
Kiya Lee I’m sorry, but I have zero clue what phonetic means. I’m really not educated on French or language terms by any means. ://
Phonetics is just used to explain how the pronunciation and how you pronounce something is related to the way it's spelled. French isn't necessarily phonetic in the way certain languages like, my personal favorite, Russian are in the sense that their spelling of words has not changed much but the way they pronounce those words has changed so just because something is spelled a certain way it can be pronounced completely differently because it's an old word in the language making it not phonetic while in Russian it's very phonetic in the sense that for the most part words are said how they are spelt with very little exceptions. I know that was long but this is a pretty complex topic I highly suggest looking into it of you have any interest and I hope this might've helped you understand what the other person who replied was trying to say even though they were pretty rude about it.
Ohhh okay! Thank you, that does help a lot actually. Cool to know :33
And the words are so long lmao😂😂 where in my language you'd say: wat doe je? The French are just like: *_Que faites-vous?_*
I started the french course on Duolingo nine months ago, and now I finished French, German, Russian and on my way in Japanese!!
Last year, I finally got to see my dream accomplished: I got the oportunity to go to Paris, live and study there.
After I finished my final year exams and succeeded, I did my VISA to be able to live in the most beautiful city in the world.
Even though I was planning to finish my studies in Paris, I unfortunately have to go back to my homeland this year because of personal issues.
Overall, I have spent one year in Paris, one amazing year. While I discovered the down sides of this city, I got to live all the beautiful things Paris has to offer.
One memory I will not forget are the moments when I got back to my apartment, exhausted after a long day at school or a bit drunk from the party I went to, put this song and smoked a cigarette thinking about how beautiful Paris is.
If you ever get the chance to live there and speak french fluently, don't hesitate.

The lyrics in this hits different
The rat has an "I Want" song. Let that sink in.
The lyrics here aren't even right, there are parts that they write words where she just makes noises, and where they write the wrong words entirely, the meaning and translation is clearly put into google translate
It's 2023, are we mature enough to admit that Ratatouille is easily a Top 3 Pixar movie and it's not even debatable???
some of the lyrics are wrong so let me give the real translation for you :)
0:40 "volant en chemin tout ce que je peux" actually means "stealing everything i can on the road"
1:07 "un voleur solitaire est triste à nourrir" the translation is right but the word "nourrir" is a word play (idk how to say this) between "nourrir" (feed) and "mourir" (die) so french people can hear "a lonely thief is sad to death"
1:08 the real lyrics are actually "ah, jeux si amer, je ne peux réussir" which means "this game is so bitter, i cannot succeed"
1:23 nothing is wrong here, i just wanted to add that the "stars" are a reference to les étoiles michelin, which are a reward to quality chefs / restaurants
1:53 "la fête" is not "the feast" but "the party" (but it's almost the same thing in this context)
1:58 "et sortez les bouteilles, finis les ennuis" means "take out the bottles, this is the end of troubles"
2:07 the actual lyrics are "je dresse la table de ma nouvelle vie", which means "i set the table of my new life"
thank you for reading :))
I just wanted to add that in the star race part, she don't say "on redira" she say "on me dira"
Thank you
isn't it "à un jeu si amer, je ne peux réussir" ?

Sometimes i think i can learn french but when im listening to french songs i realized that it's just better to rewind time and be born and live in france all my life
Few mistakes in the french translation:
- Espoir, not "Éspoire"
- Plat, not "plât"
- Habituée not "habitué" because the singer is a woman, so you need an -e at the end.
- Amère is for the feminine, "amer" is when you're a man.
- "Laissez" not "laisser"
- "Emerveiller" not "émerveillez"
-"Régalér" does not exist, it is "régaler"
- Feast mean "Festin" in french not "fête"
If you're studying french, bon courage ;) it is really difficult, but don't give up, it is also a beautiful language.
Toutes mes félicitations, tu as raison mais t’as oublié aussi l’adjectif“malheureux” qui est sensé être “malheureuse” parce que c’est une femme qui chante comme tu l’as dit donc sa doit être au féminin par la suite.
Thank you🥰
I think, though the singer is female, Rémy's character wrote the lyrics, or something like that. So it makes sense for her to sing as if she were male.
The song describes Rémy's journey pretty well.
what gender ending you use depends on what gender your speaking too/about. Just like Spanish, the masculine gender overrules.
yeah I am learning french in school and I noticed some errors from the lyrics. If i didn't have the lyrics I probably wouldn't be able to notice them, or even understand what she was singing.

my dude, spaghetti is Italian not French lol
You can eat spaghetti in France, but if you really want French cuisine, I picture sipping a glass of pinot gris and eating canard á l'orange (duck in orange sauce) or if breakfast, a coffee and a croissant.
Alana King I was eating a croissant and I thought if this song.so a croissant brought me here😂
peri winwun Don't forget the wine
YES! then with mille feuille as dessert
When she said "Une vie à me cacher, et puis libre enfin" i felt that
I can imitate the way she sings even if I can’t pronounce the words the right way. When you ask someone to read the lyrics, there’s a high possibility that they’ll pronounce it differently than the way she sings it, this is true for many songs regardless of the language it’s sang. And for that I say, it’s not really about pronouncing everything “properly” but the emotion you put into singing it, relaxed and letting the melodies flow and guide the words.
I don't know why but I feel like crying whenever I hear this. So many childhood memories of watching this movie with my family. Young me being amazed at the visuals I saw.
me too ;(
It makes me want to cry not so much from the movie. I came across this song because of a meme and her voice is is just so beautiful and soothing. The flow of her words and her tone is so orchestrated and talented
I cry because the movie hit me, when I first saw it I was 5 and I didn't understand it but now that I am twelve I can understand it a bit better, and so I cry every time I watch it
legit same
The rats in my kitchen do be vibin tho.
They finna steal my food.
hol up
The peacefulness of the song is actually uncanny once you know the lyrics
THAT'S SO TRUE, IT BREAKS YOU
it's basically france right now
"Hope is a dish eaten too quickly" has to be one of the most fire bars I've heard honestly.
I haven't seen Ratatouille for a long time. I recently went to Disney World and heard this in the line for the attraction at Epcot, such an incredible ambient song.
No One:
Me :putting chicken tenders in the microwave while this song plays on my speaker
Just blasting it at 3 in the morning
Reasons why I think French has a beautiful language:
1. Le festin song.
@Rsy Tn *flashbacks to guillotine* haha.. yeah... good times
@Rsy Tn indeed
Why I think french is a beautiful language:
1) Ratatouille
ahah ! Thank you for us ! 😂😂 but I'm actually proud of it!
@@deathbypotato5030 Actually it's thanks to the guillotine (or the French Revolution) than European countries are now republics and democracies, with a civil code.
I feel bad for saying this and don’t mean to disrespect OP in any way but this translation is pretty inaccurate, here’s a less “word for word” one with a bit of context:
LE FESTIN/THE FEAST
“The dreams of lovers are similar to good wine,
they give either joy or sadness,
weakened by hunger, I am desperate,
stealing on my way all I can
for nothing in life is free.”
The first verse introduces this character who lives on the streets with very little to eat, who is slowly starving to death (and references subtly the importance that stealing has in Ratatouille yayyy)
“Hope is a dish you consume way too fast,
I’m used to skipping meals,
a thief, lonely is sad to feed”
(there is a slight wordplay here between the idea of the character being pitiful, left to die by society and a common French expression that suggests suicidal thoughts)
“Our turn, I am bitter,
I want to succeed,
for nothing in life is free. “
(referencing how people living in the streets are barely even given a chance to get out of their situation, they can hope and want to succeed so they can afford to live but have to face the fact that they most likely won’t get to)
“Never again can they say
That I am not meant to chase stars
Let me amaze you, take off and fly to the top
We are going to feast. “
(Here starts the duality of the meaning, in one way it could mean, just like in the movie, that this character does manage to succeed in this world that isn’t shaped for them, in the other the way it’s phrased (with more suicidal oriented wordplays) highly suggest that they are ending their life)
“The party is finally about to begin
Get the bottles, no more troubles,
I’m setting the table , tomorrow starts a new life
I like the thought of this new fate “
(There it is again, are they wishing they will be reborn in a new, easier life or are they actually just getting on a happier path?)
“A whole life spent hiding away, finally free
The feast is coming to me
A whole life spent hiding away, finally free
The feast is coming to me.”
( And so either they will finally satisfy their hunger, either they have reached a metaphorical afterlife in which they don’t feel the hunger anymore)
Woooaah thank you for this. I did not realise it's really interesting but dark~ I love the song either way
btw what exactly is the phrase you were referring to saying there's a common French expression that suggests suicidal thoughts?
@@carline_fc it's the Triste à nourrir part, it sounds like the expression : Triste à en mourir (mourir and nourrir are very similar in pronunciation) , which is often used in old French songs, it would be a bit hard to translate but it basically means "so sad one would die of it"
@@rontheron4807 Yeah, sort of understand it because I learn French. Thx for the explanation
@@rontheron4807 As a non french speaker I thank you for the translation but I dont think pixar would put so many suicidal stuff on purpose, I guess they wanted to reference the phrase about death because of sadness but the rest is just a lucky/unlucky coincidence. Ffs the film is about a rat being the chef of a restaurant (or they might have done it one purpose, who knows) but again merci beaucoup, salutations from espagne ;) (I used to study french but I dont remember shit)
I am studying french... I haven't heard this song in ages, but I can just barely understand it. This song made me felt so happy I cried a little bit
When you really think about it, this song fits Remy perfectly.

i don't remember remy thinking about suicide to be honest

French is a pretty language!🍷🌹
Actually, this song made me realize that fact once again. I mean, her french sounds just.. magnificent.
***** XD
tnql1216 That's because she magnificently worked on her phrasing. And yes, she's realy, realy a great singer... and her sweet little voice.... Ahhh~... she give me dreams about Paris when I hear her singing. "sniff" ( T w T)
" Dieu que j'aurais souhaité que Paris fut aussi mélodieuse, aussi belle qu'elle nous le laisse imaginer avec cette musique... Ah, que de soupirs pour ce qui fut la Capitale des Arts." [ Yes, I am french. And since I've discovered that many likes this language, I became a little more, um... "proud" about it. I hope you'll forgive me about it... "mew" (^///^ ") ]
ikr such a fancy language lmao
Prince P3ach Preserves NEIN. Deutsch ist ein besser Sprache.
Sometimes when I’m hungry because I’m anorexic and it feels more like being in a famine, I play this song just to feel something.
Me before I heard the lyrics: "a French song inspired from love or dreams."
After hearing the song: *dark realities of life
Same.
Truue
0:38 "volant" means stealing here. The sentence translates to "stealing all I can on my way"
Thanks. I knew there was something off with that. I just don't know enough French to correct. Yet. I'll keep learning tho
It's a "magic word" in french it have double sense
Couplet 1]
Les rêves des amoureux sont comme le bon vin
Ils donnent de la joie ou bien du chagrin
Affaibli par la faim, je suis malheureux
Volant en chemin tout ce que je peux
Car rien n'est gratuit dans la vie
[Couplet 2]
L'espoir est un plat bien trop vite consommé
À sauter les repas, je suis habitué
Un voleur solitaire est triste à nourrir
À un jeu si amer, je n'peux réussir
Car rien n'est gratuit dans la vie
[Couplet 3]
Jamais on ne me dira
it is on screen if you couldn't tell.

I can't explain how much this song makes me want to go back in time where I was happy all the time, where I just had to worry about food and sleep.
That's a good show
I know it’s a sad song but the person that’s singing this song, sang beautifully. Her voice 😌
Me knowing Canadian french and being able to speak fluently.

Liar
This right here is so nostagic. I liked the movie when I was younger and my teachers would always play it for some reason. One day I ended up watching this movie twice in 2 diferent classes. Also something about this song and the nostagia with it reminds me to not take the modern era for granted and to not be to stuck on the past.
