Cause and Effect is one of my favourite episodes. I feel for Captain Frasier who's been away for so long. Part 2 of Chain of Command is just about to start, another excellent story.
Always been one of my absolute favorite episodes across every Trek series! I mean, 9 years old, sitting with my mom watching this show and within 2 minutes, we see the Enterprise destroyed and the crew presumably killed... It was shocking to say the least!
I did not know the plot of the episode before it first aired, I only knew it was a new episode. After watching the teaser I thought it was harkening back to some shows in the sixties, where the teaser was just a scene from later in the episode. Then when Act One went to commercial and the ship was already destroyed I was thoroughly confused. When the commercials ended and Act Two started the same way Act One did I realized immediately, "time loop". As a result I consider it the best-written (but not best-overall) episode of the series.
"Captain, do you know what year it is ?." " 2278, .......now I have a question for you, if you are the Enterprise, where is Admiral Kirk ?." " Ah....... Captain, er, ... Our present year is 2369, this is the 24th century, .......its rather complicated, "
This is my favorite TNG episode of all time and my favorite episode of the franchise period. One thing i do remember from a documentary about this episode, they made a new Enterprise D model that was just the starboard nacelle pylon and the nacelle itself along with the other ship parts visible in the shot. Its sole purpose was to help with depicting how the nacelle exploded when the Bozeman's own nacelle scraped some paint off the Enterprise-D's nacelle.
This is one of my 10 ten fav TNG episodes. I had dragged my farther to the Museum of TV and Radio ( Now called The Paley Center For Media) in Manhattan circa 1998. Wanting to go back after a school trip only months before. I knew during the week we went, they had on display on the first floor a lot of the costumes relating to TNG, this was from a brochure i picked on during that school trip. They had on floors above private viewing rooms of so many past shows from all over TV and Radio. We sat down and view Cause and Effect and The inner Light. What amazing memories this episode leaves with me along with Inner Light.
I think the very clever writing by Braga and the excellent directing by Frakes make this episode a classic. Either of those being off could have killed it. This may be the best high-concept sci-fi plot in the whole of Star Trek.
One of my favorites. I had a 2nd grade student who was fascinated by time travel, so I told him the episode. He asked the question, "what if our whole live is one big time loop?"
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios inner light has to be the best TNG episode. It's the only one that really moved me emotionally. "Make now always the most precious time, because now will never co e again.
I LOVED this episode of TNG! With every act the crew slowly began to piece together what was happening to them through Deja vu and Kelsey Grammer as the captain of the other ship. I would've love to see a follow-up episode with his ship and crew!
The only thing that bugs me with this episode is the explosion of the D. No....The variety of core explosions in Star Trek is what bugs me lol. It shouldn't be explosion here....explosion there. It should just be BOOM. Otherwise.....for sure one of my favourites! Thanks for the video!
Yeah the composited explosions look best for that scale of starship. ILM even agreed since thats how they blew up the stardrive section in Generations.
Absolutely, and a good bottle episode can do that... Unfortunately a lot of bottle episodes dont do that, and end up a boring disaster! Star Trek did this one right :)
Oh I remember this episode very well, ansd the amount of times things reset wasnt too long to get boring or too short to be what was the point of that? And that damnd warp core ejection system of the Galaxy class sure is a darn flawe, every time the order is given to dump the core, the ejection system is malfunctioning, I would have the designers have a look at that system to make sure that it is more efficient and works in extreme circumstances, thankfully by the time we got to Voyager, they dumped their core every few seasons and hardly any issues with that. I remember seeing the opener before the credits at the destruction of the Enterprise, it had me glued to the screen from that and not a single word came out of my mouth till the episode ended and my grandmother told my cousins as well to be quiet as she was enjoying the show too (huge star wars fans my cousins, so they went home and came back when the episode had finished) I liked how as the episode progressed the crew got the feeling they had done the same thing and had the feeling of deja vu, I think it was Beverley (my favourite doctor and also crush as a teenager) who had that feeling of deja vu in the poker game, predicting what cards would be dealt, and then the others, and then of course Picard feeling as though he had read the same pages in his book as well, we knew that as soon as things started to be investigated they would find the problem that was causing all this. Then Riker, asking how to deal with things how to go about doing things, and I think it wa Picard saying that the should proceed as normal as trying to second guess themselvs could lead to the consequences in the first place.. I personally loved the lower lighting in the scenes as well especially on the bridge. It would hae been great to have Kirstie Alley as the first officer of the Bozeman with the Captain played by Kelsey Grammer, just throw in Lilith too (though I love the character Lilith and know that Bebe Neuwirth did play a character in TNG as well) The shuttlebay blast was definitely a brief but unique scene thats for sure. These were the days of actual physical models to be played around with and alot of talent were involved, not just from acting, but from model construction as well, just like the DS9 way of the warrior that involved alot of physical models all before CGI would tak eover everything. CGI might seem nice but seems way pricey and I like how fans can make a better show of things than some franchises and they have bigger budgets and come up with some awful designs, whereas fans, no money more or less take the time and effort to put into a franchise and their work looks far superior. I digress... I wonder if they had a decision - should the Bozeman be a Miranda class or Oberth class, before deciding the Miranda (thogh would have been good to see a constitution class) 8:50 that is still a painful scene for me to see - but to me this was also where DS9 got interesting. A fantastic episode to look back on, I miss TNG and I might have to have a full rewatch of it again, no doubt I will have missed a few things and well, a refresher is always good.
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios You're welcome. This episode has always been one if my favorites. I wish Kelsey Grammar would have made more appearances after this.
I bet a conversation between Moore and Braga went something like this... : ) Moore: Looks like the script's a bit short. Braga: I'll type out another poker scene. You know, we could stick this one toward the beginning of the episode and tie it directly into the plot.
I have to ask.. has it ever been settled if kelsey grammer(gods I hope thats spelled right) was in that tiny bit of dialog "Defiant and Bozeman, fall back to mobile position one. (Kelsey Grammer. "acknowledged"). from the fleet chatter in star trek first contact? I've always wanted to know...
While I think that Cause and Effect and Ground Hog Day are tolerable time loop stories, I'm pretty jaded on the premise because of Haruhi Suzumiya and When They Cry. Eight episodes of near identical script and visuals and Nagato not cluing anybody in. Then Hanyuu not following Takano or Tomitake around.
Loved this episode, except for the Enterprise explosion. I knew that wasn't the end of the Big E. It was the FX of said explosion I hated (still cringe every time I see it). The mass of some of the pieces halting or even reversing direction (as if on a string, not as if in space), the "sparks" seemingly "falling". It was just so obviously not how the physics would have worked in space. Of course neither is the "flight" of space ships in 90% of Sci-Fi (always shown as if they're jets in an atmosphere). The BSG reboot was one of the few that did a "better" job of realistic space flight (though not perfect). Love your videos.
I didnt mind the explosions myself, as of course, they were also limited by the techniques and era this episode was created in ;) But to each their own :)
Frakes. Smart guy. Good actor. I was active duty military back then. He was the only unbelievable actor from first Gen. I don't even know why. I could handle Ensign Crusher. I could handle the Greek chick as a camp counselor. Reading Rainbow? No problem. You can be a fit nerd in the mil. But Will Riker? No way. He was fit enough. His body just screamed, "I couldn't make it through two weeks of hard training with knees, elbows, and spine intact." No offense to the actor. He tried hard to swash and buckle. You could just tell he was a walking spine and joint injury waiting to happen. Soft in the middle with basketball player dimensions. Never ends well.
I kinda wish it is a soft two-parter. I would have loved to watch what happened with the Boseman after the event. However, I think a lot of it had been covered in Yesterdays's Enterprise.
How could saavik be on a TOS era constitution-class Starship 🤷🏾♂️if they had went with their original idea that sure would have screwed up the movies timeline😁
Just because the episode was written and had aired a year before 'Groundhog Day' was released doesn't mean Braga didn't have access to the script/screen play before it went into production. Not saying that's the case, but it's very possible.
No it isnt... Braga had NO connection to Columbia Pictures, or anyone involved, and scripts are not thrown out to random people in Hollywood to look at... To think anything else is possible would just be silly :P
