I played Super Metroid for the first time on my Wii U Virtual Console around three years ago. Thought it was really good. However, after watching several UA-cam videos reviewing the game and reading several articles talking about why it's so great, I decided to give the game another shot. Before I did, I stumbled upon a speedrun of the game, and right then and there my mind was blown. Long story short, Super Metroid has since become my favorite game of ALL TIME! I have played the game to completion over a dozen times. I see people say that "only nostalgia-blinded people like Super Metroid." While I'm proof against that. I grew up with the GameCube and GameBoy Advance, yet I think Super Metroid is an absolute masterpiece.
Cedars I agree completely, Super Metroids greatness has nothing to do with nostalgia. There are plenty of games where that is true, but Metroid simply isn't one of them.
Anyone who says that only those blinded by nostalgia can appreciate Super Metroid have obviously never played the game. I played this game when I had very little knowledge of gaming in general (and hence no nostalgia. Hell I barely even knew what a SNES was) and I fell in love with it instantly.

Many years ago, I decided to try playing this game on my SNES Classic and I fell in love with it. I never actually beat the game though. Last week, I decided to replay this game again and it's just as good as I remember. This time I plan on beating the game.
Funny how Sakamoto was stubborn and believed that the essences of metroid could always be done by the gameplay mechanices, and not the story. Yet years later he produced the abomination known as Other M with exactly what he was stubborn about. Irony.

I rented Super Metroid the first time, and the save file on that cartridge was in Tourian near Mother Brain. We could never beat her, and after re-renting the game, I found out that the game had a Delete button and accidentally deleted that save file, allowing us to start the game from the beginning. From the moment of the title screen, to the intro, to the general gameplay, I was hooked. The first game I ever played in my life as like a 2-3 year old was Metroid on NES, and then I won a Game Boy with Metroid II, and here I was playing Super Metroid. It was also the first game to make me cry when me and my friend reached Mother Brain, having played through the whole game to get to that part and learned a lot during that journey, only to have the Metroid sacrifice itself, it was emotional and we were angry, so we killed her dead. And then, escape ~ While the escape theme wasn't as good as it was in NES Metroid.. It was amazing. One of my favorite games of all time, and one of those I always replay every year.
I'm currently playing through this incredible game, and watching this made me appreciate it even more. All the hard work definitely paid off in the end, as they created a masterpiece that never feels any less impressive no matter how many times you've experienced it.
I remember I was lucky enough to have this game come with the SNES. We didn't really have the money to buy extra games so I was forced to play this. My God, how lucky I was... To this day, everything is held up to this standard for mechanics, art, and sound.
It brought a tear to my eye how you explained how passionate they were for making this game. Working overtime, and being put under intense pressure by their company. It really goes to show how you should never give up on your dreams. Because no matter how much someone tells you that you can't achieve your dreams. You can end up proving them wrong in the end. Super Metroid has been my favorite game since I first played through it back in 94. Every single thing about it still holds up remarkable well, and the soundtrack is unbeatable.
I refuse to play Super Metroid until I own the original hardware. The development of this game is very inspiring to me from the dedication and determination of the development team going through a hellish crunch period. It’s admirable.

“Super Metroid is the perfect game.” It truly is. Nearly every aspect of the game has held up. Sure it’s “old”, but for a 29 year old game, it holds up. The game visually has a broad palette, the sound effects are thoughtful and impactful, the music is moody and atmospheric. But the game design is immeasurably valuable for all developers. “Go play Super Metroid, it is perfect.”
Super Metroid is my second video game love, but it's my greatest video game love. My first was sonic, but even that was no match for this game that has been with me since I was a kid. I still pick it up and play it on an emulator and my experience with it has given me a fluidity to its gameplay. The game-world including the world map and the location of literally every single item is imprinted on my mind forever. When I was a teenager it was this game that made me want to make games which led to me learning how to program which led to me pursuing a career in IT and computer programming. Super Metroid is the video game that has had the single greatest impact on my entire life.
I still speedrun SM to this day and play different rom hacks for it (item randomizers, endless mode). It's one of the few 20+ year old games I keep coming back to (tetris and super mario 3 and World are the others).

Super Metroid was my first Metroid game. My mom bought it for me at the Joplin flea market for 10 dollars in 1998. I didn't even know about Metroid at the time but i fell in love that night. Played it so much got to where I could beat 10 to 14 times a day. It was the only game i had so I speed ran it a lot after my first play through. Love it
I must have been 10 or 11 back in the day when I first played this game back in the mid 90s. My uncle had a store where he rented out console games and VHS tapes. Super Metroid scared me. It was super creepy. I didn't complete the game until much later when I was around 16 or so.
Super metroid is and always will be a masterpiece. From conception through to release everyone involved gave their all and did not give up on it. My enduring memory from playing this upon release in the early nineties was completing it and hearing the haunting but beautiful composition of the closing credits. When the credits roll to the end and you hear the single tones at the end before your completion percentage is shown always and still does make the hairs on my neck stand on end. Such a beautiful game. It will be played and loved for generations to come!

Great video! Definitely a classic. I remember years ago (decades lol) when a friend and his younger brother walked me into their mom's bedroom and showed me exactly where the game was hidden (it was a future gift that they weren't supposed to know about). Once they were finally able to open it, man was that game played non stop.

i remember the first time i beat this game i was six, and i was so amazed by this game that the second i saw the credits roll i told my grandad, "this game is the best game ever, i wanna play it again right now BUT FASTER" and from that day on i been into speedrunning this game
I was 8 years old when it was released. I always enjoyed playing it and actually never beat it until a few years later. Every time I would pick it up and discover something new, I would have a feeling of satisfaction which I cannot find a single word to describe. The atmosphere and design are perfect.
I just played through Super Metroid for the first time last week. What a masterpiece! The exploration and sense of discovery is immensely satisfying and rivals any game I've ever played! It took me 10 hours to beat the game with 75% completion; I got stuck multiple times but powered through it. I played on Switch Online and I suspect my play through would've been a few hours longer without the Switch's save states. I did end up using those for a few extremely frustrating jumps and also to save time running back to boss rooms. There are a few design decisions that are a little rough by today's standards - namely how tedious getting energy can be due to very few energy restore rooms on the map. Also I found wall jumping to be finicky and unreliable with platforming in general being very floaty and imprecise. Those gripes aside, the game still stands at the pinnacle of dungeon design, with finely-crafted atmospheric storytelling, and will be remembered as one of the pioneering games that created the Metroidvania genre we love today.
Super Metroid 3 and Shadow of the Colossus. Two of the greatest games ever made and both obviously works of passion pushing their respective console's limits. The music, the atmosphere, the tone, and gameplay mechanics... absolutely stunning. Truly works of art.

I never grew up with Super Metroid. First played it in 2014. And it still holds up so damn well, I have played through it over 20 times now, using a different route each time, trying to save time while 100% it. I love this game to death. One of the best games ever created.

I wouldn't touch the wall jump but improve the space jump instead. There are other things I'd improve but the space jump is the most frustrating for me
Wall jump was perfect. Had a skill curve to it and once you knew how to do it you could keep on improving and doing more crazy shit with it. Controls are perfect the way they are.
Call of Duty, or any other game as of late, will never, NEVER, be as awesome as Super Metroid. They may come close, but it will never as great. This game has and will always stand against time. They knew what they were doing then.
I can't believe what the team went through and how we almost didn't get one of the most awesome games of all time. I would like to see some development builds and beta testing builds.
All of the best games ever made seems to have the same patterns to them. They are all made before year 2000 and they all have a similar backstory. A group of programmers that invested their souls in overtime, weary situations and the "head people" questioning their every move. I really salute these people back in the days that invested so much. It shows in the final product and they become timeless classics. My personal opinion: Modern games suck ass! Today's programmers don't give a shit about the games, only the profit. They release half made games and rely on stupid updates, implement in-game purchases for skins and other stupid shit (basically pay to win) and quickly abandon their games as soon as they are "good enough" and are onto new projects. I rarely buy games these days because games are often not good. I always find myself scanning through the old Nintendo/PlayStation collection for a replay of a classic game. It feels like I'm stuck in time, constantly dwelling in nostalgia. The Metroid Randomizer and Zelda Randomizer was a revolutionary breakthrough and easily hooks you into an addiction of the games. But it still locks me in my youth. I'm not sure if I could call this my favorite game of all time. I don't think I could give a straight answer to a question like that. But it is easily on my top 5 game list. The most epic thing that could ever happen is if Nintendo made a "Super Nintendo 2" and made old school games on a "new" system. Imagine what they could do with modern technology to a system that ran 16-bit graphics.
I was living in Louisiana as a teenager with my family when the game came out. My dads friend rented it form Blockbuster then lied to them that his kid destroyed the game and paid the fee and just kept it. He had it hooked up to his surround sound stereo system as well as in a large wide screen tv. The experience blew my mind!! It was like a movie to me and I was playing it for two hours before I had to go home. Just amazing. Then when I finally got it at our house I played it and played and played it day after day exploring every nook and cranny till I have memorized practically every corner of that game. I bough the nintendo power edition that had a comlpete walk through to see If I had missed anything. Then I started mentally creating my own map and method to get everything and beat it as fast as possible. I managed 99% in 54 minutes but was ok with that because i knew the last missle I forgot would only have taken an extra minute or so and my goal was just to beat it under an hour (after many attempts to see how low I could get my speed run time). Then in one magazine I saw that the world speed record for SM was 100% 45 minutes, which I couldn't believe but accepted at the time. Fav game for the longest. Now I wish that they would do a remake with enhancements for the Switch. Or A port with complete graphical and animation upgrades and sound upgrades as the core game needs no changes.
This, "Super Mario World", and "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles" are three of the best 2D games I've played. "Super Metroid" surprised me with its immaculate play control, first-rate game design, and unlimited replay value. It truly is the perfect video game. 💛
This was the only game I ever played for almost 24 hours straight. It was the first time I played and that opening cut scene sucked me into its world. I didn't want to leave until I discovered everything. Being young was the best👍👍👍
Absolute gem of a game, I love it so much and I haven't even finished it yet, I'm quite far just a bit lost =P I played it when I had the SNES in the late 90's, I was really crap at it back then though and didn't really appreciate it but times change, it creep'd me out quite a lot back then too with the awesome atmospheric music and stuff. A tip for future videos is just speak a bit slower, you seem a bit rushed, that's been brought up before though reading a couple of the comments, great video.
I played it when it was new, it was a rental but I found a copy to buy as soon as I could. I brought the game to a friend once on a cold winter day... the cartridge lost its save due to the temperature drop and I had to start all over. 😅
The only difference between the ones on Super Metroid to the ones on ZM or Fusion is that you don't have control of Samus while mid air, only after she starts falling; making it impossible to wall jump on the same wall you started. Pretty sure it's more because it's easier on the GBA?
The wall jump is intentionally difficult to pull off because it's meant to be a hidden move that you don't know about starting out, like the shinespark or Crystal Flash.
Super Metroid is my favorite game ever, as well. I’ve played through it (in varying amounts) every year since I was young (since it’s launch). My personal best %100 speed run is 1:45. Can’t wait for MP4 and (hopefully) a MP Trilogy remake.
I just am still amazed that we came from hunting with sticks to this. Not only electricity but controlling it to make pixels and program commands for games. Not only that but how a green chip is able to put that on screen. Computers/video games are magic to me.
@Jordan Lloyd, it's pronounced "ZEB-ESS" which by all rights should be spelled as "Xeb-ess" but translation and made up planet names confuse things a great deal. However the creators and fans the world over know the world as "ZEB-ESS" not "ZEEBES" which for some fans, may be grating on the ears lol. But Good video nonetheless, into the creation and crazy production of this amazing game, everything else was spot on. (hopefully this helps C-Grn with the "writing down of pronunciation" as that can always be a pain, where language and "accents" + "verb usage" are concerned.)

Great video! Super Metroid has always been easily in my Top 3 with Ocarina of Time and Resident Evil 4. I do think it has at least one flaw. The walljumping. While it does work well, it's rather difficult to master. They could have made it more intuitive and easier to pull off, for more casual gamers it can take a really long time to get it down.

Jordan Lloyd the thing I like about those tricks is that while they're hard, there aren't any places in the game where they're entirely required except for the places that they're taught
Here's the three most important things that I want for the perfect remake: - The sense of control kept intact, complete with the ability to pull off every single trick possible in the original - A built-in randomizer unlocked after completing the game 100% - Most importantly, having the original game playable just like in Zero Mission
Really great stuff you taught me a lot. It’s was fun to learn a couple things that will be obvious after I explain my super Metroid story as requested. I got into playing older games a couple years ago, I’d had access to an NES and SNES growing up but I literally knew the SNES as the Super Mario World Machine. I didn’t know it did anything else. Lucky for me I caught wind there were some great games on there. Somehow super Metroid never came up that I noticed. Well I found a co worker at a new job that loved the SNES in his younger days and raved about super Metroid. It was an expensive one so I tested it out on an emulator. I really liked it it was really fun so I bought a copy. As that co worker states, he went on vacation for two weeks, and at the beginning of that time I called him because I couldn’t figure out how to morph ball, (I had immediately gone into the menu and disabled it by mistake when I got it) when he came back, however, I had 100%’d the game twice, and was in the process of getting the gravity suit with minimal items by heavy sequence breaking, and was practically wall jumping exclusively to get around. I was obsessed. Anyway cutting to the chase a bit, I absolutely love Super Metroid, I consider it to be the finest game ever made and completely flawless, staggeringly perfect in its level design and layout, especially for how open it is to being abused. The effort required to make it like that on purpose is mind boggling. Super Metroid is the gold standard of video games. I jokingly open describing a new game to someone as “it’s no super Metroid, but...”
No need for a remake it already a masterpiece, a timeless classic indeed. It would be nice though, to see a true spiritual successor. They should make another supermetroid in 2d on the switch, very similar in style and movement to supermetroid (not like zero mission or fusion) and just make it super detailed and about one thousand times larger. So large that any fully rendered 2d map of the entire game would fill the entire floor space of an Olympic swimming pool. Imagine how crazy it would be to find every little secret and easter egg. Development for a world that size would be monumentally challenging. Getting everything to flow properly and making sequence of events in all the game areas to work. But the Japanese are crazy and driven enough to pull it off. I mean, they created a pretty interesting and enormously large open world in breath of the wild. Although I do realize it's most likely easier to create a 3d open world than it is to create a 2d metroid of epic proportions.
Great job on the dialog. It's not easy to speak that rapidly yet still be understood. At least not for me. The editing is very good too. Quite professional looking.
Never played Super Metroid, but probably one of my top 10 games is Zero Mission which according to a lot of people is one of the best Metroid games out there.
Zero Mission is a blast to play but to be honest I think it is far easier than SM. Also, the player movement in Zero Mission is very different from SM. I've heard people complain that SM feels "floaty" after playing Zero, and that they dislike having to use Select to toggle through weapons and having a Run button. Zero Mission simplified a few things from SM (which makes sense given the GBA limited button layout).
Not my favorite game nor did I grow up playing it (I was an NES kid), but it's definitely a masterpiece for what it is. I'm really liking getting around to playing it finally on the Super Nintendo Classic.
It is the best masterpiece. Probably the best 2d game ever even in In 2021. The only thing about it is that it feels very lonely. Their is no other character in the game other than you and the enemies. Other than that it is the best 2d masterpiece in history.
Hey I like the video, I think you did a great job. I was just wondering, though, if the original Metroid was not considered a very good seller, why did they continue the series? Also, isn't the original Metroid technically like the 2nd or 3rd best selling game in the series, only passed by Prime (almost 20 years later), and Dread (most recently in 2021)? I think it might have sold better than Prime, but I can't remember. Dread is technically the best selling game in the series, and that hasn't even sold 3 million. Yet, that is. I thought if a game sold 1 million units, that was generally regarded as considerably successful.

Super Metroid is my second video game love, but it's my greatest video game love. My first was sonic, but even that was no match for this game that has been with me since I was a kid. I still pick it up and play it on an emulator and my experience with it has given me a fluidity to its gameplay. The game-world including the world map and the location of literally every single item is imprinted on my mind forever. When I was a teenager it was this game that made me want to make games which led to me learning how to program which led to me pursuing a career in IT and computer programming.
Super Metroid is the video game that has had the single greatest impact on my entire life.

I still speedrun SM to this day and play different rom hacks for it (item randomizers, endless mode). It's one of the few 20+ year old games I keep coming back to (tetris and super mario 3 and World are the others).

Super Metroid was my first Metroid game. My mom bought it for me at the Joplin flea market for 10 dollars in 1998. I didn't even know about Metroid at the time but i fell in love that night. Played it so much got to where I could beat 10 to 14 times a day. It was the only game i had so I speed ran it a lot after my first play through. Love it

I must have been 10 or 11 back in the day when I first played this game back in the mid 90s. My uncle had a store where he rented out console games and VHS tapes. Super Metroid scared me. It was super creepy. I didn't complete the game until much later when I was around 16 or so.
Super metroid is and always will be a masterpiece. From conception through to release everyone involved gave their all and did not give up on it. My enduring memory from playing this upon release in the early nineties was completing it and hearing the haunting but beautiful composition of the closing credits. When the credits roll to the end and you hear the single tones at the end before your completion percentage is shown always and still does make the hairs on my neck stand on end. Such a beautiful game. It will be played and loved for generations to come!

Great video! Definitely a classic. I remember years ago (decades lol) when a friend and his younger brother walked me into their mom's bedroom and showed me exactly where the game was hidden (it was a future gift that they weren't supposed to know about). Once they were finally able to open it, man was that game played non stop.

i remember the first time i beat this game i was six, and i was so amazed by this game that the second i saw the credits roll i told my grandad, "this game is the best game ever, i wanna play it again right now BUT FASTER" and from that day on i been into speedrunning this game

I was 8 years old when it was released. I always enjoyed playing it and actually never beat it until a few years later. Every time I would pick it up and discover something new, I would have a feeling of satisfaction which I cannot find a single word to describe. The atmosphere and design are perfect.

I just played through Super Metroid for the first time last week. What a masterpiece! The exploration and sense of discovery is immensely satisfying and rivals any game I've ever played! It took me 10 hours to beat the game with 75% completion; I got stuck multiple times but powered through it. I played on Switch Online and I suspect my play through would've been a few hours longer without the Switch's save states. I did end up using those for a few extremely frustrating jumps and also to save time running back to boss rooms. There are a few design decisions that are a little rough by today's standards - namely how tedious getting energy can be due to very few energy restore rooms on the map. Also I found wall jumping to be finicky and unreliable with platforming in general being very floaty and imprecise. Those gripes aside, the game still stands at the pinnacle of dungeon design, with finely-crafted atmospheric storytelling, and will be remembered as one of the pioneering games that created the Metroidvania genre we love today.

Super Metroid 3 and Shadow of the Colossus. Two of the greatest games ever made and both obviously works of passion pushing their respective console's limits. The music, the atmosphere, the tone, and gameplay mechanics... absolutely stunning. Truly works of art.

I never grew up with Super Metroid. First played it in 2014. And it still holds up so damn well, I have played through it over 20 times now, using a different route each time, trying to save time while 100% it. I love this game to death. One of the best games ever created.

The ONE thing I'd improve about this game is that I'd tighten up the wall jump. That shit wonky sometimes.
I wouldn't touch the wall jump but improve the space jump instead. There are other things I'd improve but the space jump is the most frustrating for me
To me, that more natural jumping of Super Metroid is vastly superior to the mechanical wall jumps of the later 2D Metroids.
Wall jumping is pretty easy on a keyboard, and not easy on a gamepad.
Wall jump was perfect. Had a skill curve to it and once you knew how to do it you could keep on improving and doing more crazy shit with it. Controls are perfect the way they are.
Call of Duty, or any other game as of late, will never, NEVER, be as awesome as Super Metroid. They may come close, but it will never as great. This game has and will always stand against time. They knew what they were doing then.

All of the best games ever made seems to have the same patterns to them. They are all made before year 2000 and they all have a similar backstory. A group of programmers that invested their souls in overtime, weary situations and the "head people" questioning their every move. I really salute these people back in the days that invested so much. It shows in the final product and they become timeless classics. My personal opinion: Modern games suck ass! Today's programmers don't give a shit about the games, only the profit. They release half made games and rely on stupid updates, implement in-game purchases for skins and other stupid shit (basically pay to win) and quickly abandon their games as soon as they are "good enough" and are onto new projects. I rarely buy games these days because games are often not good. I always find myself scanning through the old Nintendo/PlayStation collection for a replay of a classic game. It feels like I'm stuck in time, constantly dwelling in nostalgia. The Metroid Randomizer and Zelda Randomizer was a revolutionary breakthrough and easily hooks you into an addiction of the games. But it still locks me in my youth. I'm not sure if I could call this my favorite game of all time. I don't think I could give a straight answer to a question like that. But it is easily on my top 5 game list.
The most epic thing that could ever happen is if Nintendo made a "Super Nintendo 2" and made old school games on a "new" system. Imagine what they could do with modern technology to a system that ran 16-bit graphics.
I was living in Louisiana as a teenager with my family when the game came out. My dads friend rented it form Blockbuster then lied to them that his kid destroyed the game and paid the fee and just kept it. He had it hooked up to his surround sound stereo system as well as in a large wide screen tv. The experience blew my mind!! It was like a movie to me and I was playing it for two hours before I had to go home. Just amazing. Then when I finally got it at our house I played it and played and played it day after day exploring every nook and cranny till I have memorized practically every corner of that game. I bough the nintendo power edition that had a comlpete walk through to see If I had missed anything. Then I started mentally creating my own map and method to get everything and beat it as fast as possible. I managed 99% in 54 minutes but was ok with that because i knew the last missle I forgot would only have taken an extra minute or so and my goal was just to beat it under an hour (after many attempts to see how low I could get my speed run time). Then in one magazine I saw that the world speed record for SM was 100% 45 minutes, which I couldn't believe but accepted at the time. Fav game for the longest. Now I wish that they would do a remake with enhancements for the Switch. Or A port with complete graphical and animation upgrades and sound upgrades as the core game needs no changes.

This, "Super Mario World", and "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles" are three of the best 2D games I've played. "Super Metroid" surprised me with its immaculate play control, first-rate game design, and unlimited replay value. It truly is the perfect video game. 💛

This was the only game I ever played for almost 24 hours straight. It was the first time I played and that opening cut scene sucked me into its world. I didn't want to leave until I discovered everything. Being young was the best👍👍👍

I played it when I had the SNES in the late 90's, I was really crap at it back then though and didn't really appreciate it but times change, it creep'd me out quite a lot back then too with the awesome atmospheric music and stuff.
A tip for future videos is just speak a bit slower, you seem a bit rushed, that's been brought up before though reading a couple of the comments, great video.

I played it when it was new, it was a rental but I found a copy to buy as soon as I could. I brought the game to a friend once on a cold winter day... the cartridge lost its save due to the temperature drop and I had to start all over. 😅

Literally the only thing I'd change is the wall jump. Even after all these years, I still can't quite nail it as well as in Zero Mission or Fusion.

The only difference between the ones on Super Metroid to the ones on ZM or Fusion is that you don't have control of Samus while mid air, only after she starts falling; making it impossible to wall jump on the same wall you started. Pretty sure it's more because it's easier on the GBA?
The wall jump is intentionally difficult to pull off because it's meant to be a hidden move that you don't know about starting out, like the shinespark or Crystal Flash.

Super Metroid is my favorite game ever, as well. I’ve played through it (in varying amounts) every year since I was young (since it’s launch). My personal best %100 speed run is 1:45. Can’t wait for MP4 and (hopefully) a MP Trilogy remake.

I just am still amazed that we came from hunting with sticks to this. Not only electricity but controlling it to make pixels and program commands for games. Not only that but how a green chip is able to put that on screen. Computers/video games are magic to me.

@Jordan Lloyd, it's pronounced "ZEB-ESS" which by all rights should be spelled as "Xeb-ess" but translation and made up planet names confuse things a great deal. However the creators and fans the world over know the world as "ZEB-ESS" not "ZEEBES" which for some fans, may be grating on the ears lol. But Good video nonetheless, into the creation and crazy production of this amazing game, everything else was spot on.
(hopefully this helps C-Grn with the "writing down of pronunciation" as that can always be a pain, where language and "accents" + "verb usage" are concerned.)

Great video! Super Metroid has always been easily in my Top 3 with Ocarina of Time and Resident Evil 4.
I do think it has at least one flaw. The walljumping. While it does work well, it's rather difficult to master. They could have made it more intuitive and easier to pull off, for more casual gamers it can take a really long time to get it down.

Here's the three most important things that I want for the perfect remake:
- The sense of control kept intact, complete with the ability to pull off every single trick possible in the original
- A built-in randomizer unlocked after completing the game 100%
- Most importantly, having the original game playable just like in Zero Mission

Really great stuff you taught me a lot. It’s was fun to learn a couple things that will be obvious after I explain my super Metroid story as requested. I got into playing older games a couple years ago, I’d had access to an NES and SNES growing up but I literally knew the SNES as the Super Mario World Machine. I didn’t know it did anything else. Lucky for me I caught wind there were some great games on there. Somehow super Metroid never came up that I noticed. Well I found a co worker at a new job that loved the SNES in his younger days and raved about super Metroid. It was an expensive one so I tested it out on an emulator. I really liked it it was really fun so I bought a copy. As that co worker states, he went on vacation for two weeks, and at the beginning of that time I called him because I couldn’t figure out how to morph ball, (I had immediately gone into the menu and disabled it by mistake when I got it) when he came back, however, I had 100%’d the game twice, and was in the process of getting the gravity suit with minimal items by heavy sequence breaking, and was practically wall jumping exclusively to get around. I was obsessed. Anyway cutting to the chase a bit, I absolutely love Super Metroid, I consider it to be the finest game ever made and completely flawless, staggeringly perfect in its level design and layout, especially for how open it is to being abused. The effort required to make it like that on purpose is mind boggling. Super Metroid is the gold standard of video games. I jokingly open describing a new game to someone as “it’s no super Metroid, but...”

No need for a remake it already a masterpiece, a timeless classic indeed. It would be nice though, to see a true spiritual successor. They should make another supermetroid in 2d on the switch, very similar in style and movement to supermetroid (not like zero mission or fusion) and just make it super detailed and about one thousand times larger. So large that any fully rendered 2d map of the entire game would fill the entire floor space of an Olympic swimming pool. Imagine how crazy it would be to find every little secret and easter egg. Development for a world that size would be monumentally challenging. Getting everything to flow properly and making sequence of events in all the game areas to work. But the Japanese are crazy and driven enough to pull it off. I mean, they created a pretty interesting and enormously large open world in breath of the wild. Although I do realize it's most likely easier to create a 3d open world than it is to create a 2d metroid of epic proportions.

Never played Super Metroid, but probably one of my top 10 games is Zero Mission which according to a lot of people is one of the best Metroid games out there.

Zero Mission is a blast to play but to be honest I think it is far easier than SM. Also, the player movement in Zero Mission is very different from SM. I've heard people complain that SM feels "floaty" after playing Zero, and that they dislike having to use Select to toggle through weapons and having a Run button. Zero Mission simplified a few things from SM (which makes sense given the GBA limited button layout).
the only thing i would change about super metroid is when you go into ridleys lair the lava stuff doesn't go up to prevent backtracking

It is the best masterpiece. Probably the best 2d game ever even in In 2021. The only thing about it is that it feels very lonely. Their is no other character in the game other than you and the enemies.

Hey I like the video, I think you did a great job. I was just wondering, though, if the original Metroid was not considered a very good seller, why did they continue the series? Also, isn't the original Metroid technically like the 2nd or 3rd best selling game in the series, only passed by Prime (almost 20 years later), and Dread (most recently in 2021)? I think it might have sold better than Prime, but I can't remember.
Dread is technically the best selling game in the series, and that hasn't even sold 3 million. Yet, that is. I thought if a game sold 1 million units, that was generally regarded as considerably successful.
