The death of the baby metroid still sticks with me. I want a Metroid-Samus buddy cop teamup damnit! Also I think the one thing you didn't talk enough on, the music. My God the music. Red Soil, Norfair, Super Metroid theme, Samus's Theme. There's a reason its music flows into every single game after it to some degree. It remains the absolute peak of Metroid, even now with Dread, not because the other games are bad, I adore Fusion's style and the way it implements these added themes of being hunted, but there's just nothing that tops Super Metroid's gameplay in the Metroidvania genre.
14:00 "The [shine spark] isn't easy to pull off when trying to do it diagonally..." You can simply hold the diagonal up aim button before jumping straight up to shine spark in that direction.
This is actually a mistake on my part, I meant to only say the horizontal shine spark is tricky to pull off and didn't catch it during editing. Diagonal is pretty simple. Appreciate you leaving the tip in the comments though!

Just keep at it. If you keep up the content quality (with improvements as you evolve) and work the algorithms a bit, you’ll find the success. Just don’t give up. It’s a crowded field.
Super metroid was my first metroid game when I was 10 back in 97, and I absolutely fell in love with it. Seeing those orange or green doors not knowing how to opening them and the wonder of what the game would bring next, was absolutely fantastic. Sometimes I wish I got amnesia so I could completely forget the game just so I can gain those same feelings I did when I was younger
I lied. I said no more comments. One more thing: being able to turn off abilities might seem pointless but it is crucial for speed runners. Some jumps are actually harder with high jump. Sometimes you don’t want to freeze enemies as it takes and extra shot to kill them (plus they act as blocks of ice obstructing your way). Heck, even the X-ray item has it’s uses in speed runs, primarily to break the game beyond recognition. Also, to engage super charge shots with power bombs requires you to only have one weapon upgrade turned on. This is used to kill bosses very quickly. SM is fucking perfect.
The only "problem" with Super Metroid is that it is SO GOOD that they've never been able to top it. Every 2D sequel tries to reach the heights of Super Metroid by implementing new themes and gimmicks, but they never QUITE get there.
So it wasn't made by Nintendo and the robots in the distribution center have too much HP (now patched to a reasonable level) but I think am2r is a better Metroid game than super
Really, my main issue with Super Metroid is how janky some of the physics are. Especially the Space Jump. In my last playthrough it just didn’t always work. Despite that, I love this game to bits.

They did cool stuff with the fact that it IS the second trip to Zebes... But yeah, I kinda would have preferred Super take place on a different Space Pirate base planet
I started the series with the original when I was very young, and didn't really play Super Metroid a whole lot until I was a teenager. But it has become my favorite game ever. I didn't feel that way the first time I beat it though. I knew I had just beat an incredible game, but Zelda AlttP was the game I always considered my favorite. But as the years went by I realized that I kept coming back to this game, and every play through was as great as the first. It hasn't aged at all to me. It's just an absolutely timeless masterpiece, with maybe the best atmosphere of any game I've ever played. And that ending sequence from the moment you meet the Super Metroid until the moment you blow Mother Brain to pieces is still my favorite in all of video games.
Yeah, Metroid wiki confirms Ridley won't immediately die after his HP reaches 0, you have to either cause more damage to him so he will finally explode... or let him grab you.
Great video! I only played fusion, prime trilogy and other M. I don't have any old consoles but after watching a few videos about the older games maybe i will try these out on emulators if i can find emulators and roms w playable commands. Out of the 5 metroid i played, prime2 was my favorite one and im very excited about dread, can't wait to get it.
This game has such a distinct look to it and an atmosphere only possible to create with a sixteen bit artstyle. No future game has ever been able to recreate this (with am2r being the closest) it’s that calming yet strange uncanny vibe. The only other game I’ve seen able to capture this feeling through art is axiom verge

I love the Ridleyt fight, it doesn't have any gimmicks is just a duel to the death, when Ridley HP hits zero he will try to grab you and then die, if you don't let him grab you he will die after trying a few times
I like Super Metroid a lot. I only dislike the fact that you can't tell when you grabbed or didn't grab an item since they don't make the difference in the map as dots which they fixed in Fusion onward. The game is lit.
I understand what you mean by ridley He has a weird health cap that only untriggers when he grabs you at the end of the fight so if you keep fighting him he's essentially invincible untill you get grabbed
thanks to the Johnny Vs review series, i can't help but remember his joke upon getting the Hyper Beam. "TASTE THE RAINBOW, MOTHERF&(KER!" Edit: and in concern to the animals at the end, i'm more on the fence of that, especially after MatPat's theory. on the one hand, gotta make Metroid 4 canon with them saving you at the end. on the other, *grimly* you gotta make Metroid 4 canon in that they are likely carriers of the X Parasite, which may have started the whole incident at the start of Fusion
The matpat theory makes no sense, and it ignores the very clear text in the game itself - the metroids on sr388, which you killed in metroid 2, were put there by the chozo to keep the X suppressed. The X quickly repopulated their numbers and took over sr388 after the metroids were eliminated. Then, BSL got infected by Samus's power suit (and other lifeforms gathered from sr388 itself) There's no need for the etecoons and dachoras to have been infected
Man I love your passion. I totally share it (litterally, when you talked about the climax, I was crying my shit out, fuck this amazing game that can make me sensitive). I dunno wich metroid (I could even say game) is my favorite, but it's clearly one of them, I'd say the second. I begun the saga with the prime 2, the then the prime, and then zero mission and fusion, and metroid prime 3, and other m, before doing the super on emulation. And fuck, even with my knowledge of metroid at this point, and my passion for that saga, when I played super metroid, I was amazed by its quality. Like, it's the best level design possible to me. The map is a puzzle in itself, and is so organic ! The atmosphere, the music... Only the prime could attain something similar (actually, it could be my favorite). Am2r was also damn good, I'm looking forward to your review of this game.

As much as I appreciate the customizable controls, it's weirdly restricted. You can't bind angle up/down to anything except L/R, so because I like run on R I'm just unable to angle down while still. And I wish I could put item select on L, but then I wouldn't be able to angle up either and that's a pretty important ability.
It's still the Golden Torizo, its color just changed 'cause it's at low health. Does look a lot like Bomb Torizo though, I never made that connection before.

My experience with metroid is pretty similar. I got introduced to Samus through smash bros, then I played the original on the Wii vc and thought it sucked, and then years later I played fusion on the Wii u virtual console and then went on to play the rest.
I really like this game. I was late to the party, but better late than never, right? One thing is bothering me a bit though. I frequently see you move the arm cannon up and down diagonally repeatedly in certain bits of footage. Why is this exactly? Are you nervous? Is it some sort of speedrunning trick I'm not familiar with? Or, like with me, do you do it for fun at random times? :p
It is a speed running trick! It's called arm pumping, Samus moves forward one pixel every time you alternate between pressing the diagonal aiming buttons from what I understand. Do it over and over and she'll move faster than normal. It's something I'm used to doing at this point for its practicality and 'cause it looks funny.
@@PGReviews_ Ah, I see! And ha! It looking funny is precisely why I was doing it in my latest run through the game without even knowing it was a speedrunning trick. I occasionally did it after a boss as if taunting the boss at their demise. Lol Guess you learn something every day. :)
Late to the party, but if there's a major flaw with the game, it would be the control. While it is a great setup back in the day, newer 2D Metroid games have much better control setup that made Super Metroid feels bit clunky to handle in comparison. Even so, that's the most major flaw I can think of, which is pretty insignificant in grand scheme of thing that still contributes to how freaking good Super Metroid is. And yet, Super Metroid as top of its class? That's fairly debatable and though I would say that even as serious die-hard Metroid fan, I personally believe that the little indie game Hollow Knight has managed to dethrone Super Metroid as best in class due to incredible accessibility, unique art and atmosphere, Dark-Soul-like narrative and exploration, and ass-kicking combat system with loads of fun enemies and bosses and movesets. I am sure that's debate yet to be settled (if at all) goes to show how insanely good these best Metroidvania games are, especially Super Metroid.

One last comment: that tunnel/tube thing mystified me and my friends for weeks when we first played this back in 1994. We entered Meridia through alternate routes before one of us got bored one day and set off a power bomb. That moment where we realized actions we took could actually change the game world was MIND blowing. And truth be told, it still kinda amazes me. I’m sure other games have done something similar since SM but I can’t remember another game that wowed me like it did back in 1994. God I love this game.
Play super metroid, everybody from the 90’s when it came out to people trying it out for the first time now all say its amazing, first time I played it became one of my favourite games of all time and damn near cried at the end of a game that had no words for storytelling
To be fair, Super Metroid is in the running for best game ever. Period. It builds on the good ideas from the old games and adds in nothing but awesome extras. No game made since this game has the flexibility and complex movement that Super Metroid did. What i find amazing is that all the indie games that try to copy SM (and the few AAA attempts) still fall short of the full package is SM. Even masterpieces like Ori and the Will of the Wisps has its drawbacks (for the record, Ori is likely one of my favorite games in the past 10 years). I seriously cannot think of a single criticism of SM and I am a VERY shit talk heavy individual.
Super Metroid remains my favorite Metroid game even with the release of Metroid Dread and I play through it fairly regularly. I do not go for 100% completion, though I have considered it. Unlike you, my first experience was not on the Wii U (though I did buy that version when it was offered for $0.50). I bought a cartridge from some guy who apparently needed a quick $20 and was offering it at a downtown arcade. I played through it a few weeks ago. Completion time 2:11, item collection 81%. Looking at your 100% completion times makes me feel old and slow.
I feel as though Nintendo has since underestimated the power of music in Metroid games. A huge reason why I believe Super Metroid stands out out among the others is because of it’s darker soundtrack. It really adds to the badass bounty hunter in scary territory vibe rather than a cheerful superhero coming to save the day. Dread was the only other 2D Metroid game that came close but it chose a more duffle route which ended up being less memorable

About phantoon. Nintendo mentioned that the wrecked ship belonged to the chozo and he attacked it causing them to crash onto zebes. Phantoon is an interdimensional being
Let me put it this way: Super Metroid is probably the best game to watch speed run this side of Mario 64. For a game that’s almost 30 years old, it has such deep mechanics it’s truly astonishing. The difference between someone who’s playing the game for the first time versus a speed running pro makes it look like a completely different game. And yet, speed runners don’t even really use glitches or exploit poorly designed levels. On the contrary, pretty much all the moves speed runners do were intended. Even a move like contentious wall jumping (look it up if you don’t know what it is) are just using the wall jump move given at the start of the game. It’s just using the built in move to thread a the needle of very cool sequence breaks.
I really hope they remake Super Metroid someday with Metroid Dread graphics. And if they ever do I hope they leave in as much of the sequence breaking as possible.

I think it's unfair to Metroid to say that Super inspired the Metroidvania genre. It was a big step in the right direction, but the original Metroid is the mother of Metroidvania games.
This should have been worded better, for that I apologize. My point was that Super Metroid is often what's used as a reference when Metroidvania is brought up. The things it introduced, like the map system, have become staples in the genre. If I had to compare Symphony of the Night for example to a single Metroid game, my mind immediately compares it to Super. The original Metroid walked so that Super Metroid and every other Metroidvania that came after could run.
Maybe it's just me but it bugs me when people refer as Metroid or Castlevania as Metroidvania. I get that they are the progenitors of the genre but i feel that that also excludes them from said genre. In other words, you can't be what you inspired, if that makes sense? Metroid is Metroid and Castlevania is Castlevania, the Mom and Dad off Metroidvania

You should have mentioned the secret abilities like the crystal flash and the spinning ice shield you can create
I admittedly never even use those abilities, so it slipped my mind. They’re pretty cool though.

My experience with metroid is pretty similar. I got introduced to Samus through smash bros, then I played the original on the Wii vc and thought it sucked, and then years later I played fusion on the Wii u virtual console and then went on to play the rest.
In conclusion, the game's pretty good. I recommend.

One thing is bothering me a bit though. I frequently see you move the arm cannon up and down diagonally repeatedly in certain bits of footage. Why is this exactly? Are you nervous? Is it some sort of speedrunning trick I'm not familiar with? Or, like with me, do you do it for fun at random times? :p
It is a speed running trick! It's called arm pumping, Samus moves forward one pixel every time you alternate between pressing the diagonal aiming buttons from what I understand. Do it over and over and she'll move faster than normal. It's something I'm used to doing at this point for its practicality and 'cause it looks funny.
@@PGReviews_ Ah, I see! And ha! It looking funny is precisely why I was doing it in my latest run through the game without even knowing it was a speedrunning trick. I occasionally did it after a boss as if taunting the boss at their demise. Lol

Late to the party, but if there's a major flaw with the game, it would be the control. While it is a great setup back in the day, newer 2D Metroid games have much better control setup that made Super Metroid feels bit clunky to handle in comparison. Even so, that's the most major flaw I can think of, which is pretty insignificant in grand scheme of thing that still contributes to how freaking good Super Metroid is.
And yet, Super Metroid as top of its class? That's fairly debatable and though I would say that even as serious die-hard Metroid fan, I personally believe that the little indie game Hollow Knight has managed to dethrone Super Metroid as best in class due to incredible accessibility, unique art and atmosphere, Dark-Soul-like narrative and exploration, and ass-kicking combat system with loads of fun enemies and bosses and movesets. I am sure that's debate yet to be settled (if at all) goes to show how insanely good these best Metroidvania games are, especially Super Metroid.

PGreviews, im loving your channel snd retrospectives. However, a personal rewuest, would you consider removing the profanity from your videos? I am loving listening to them but i do not want to expose my infant to cursing and would pike to be able to watch your material around her.
I've been censoring profanity in newer videos, don't know if I'd be able to remove it outright though lol. It's just the way I talk, though I have tried to be more selective with how often I swear. But I will keep this in mind when making future videos. Thanks for your support!

One last comment: that tunnel/tube thing mystified me and my friends for weeks when we first played this back in 1994. We entered Meridia through alternate routes before one of us got bored one day and set off a power bomb. That moment where we realized actions we took could actually change the game world was MIND blowing. And truth be told, it still kinda amazes me. I’m sure other games have done something similar since SM but I can’t remember another game that wowed me like it did back in 1994.

Play super metroid, everybody from the 90’s when it came out to people trying it out for the first time now all say its amazing, first time I played it became one of my favourite games of all time and damn near cried at the end of a game that had no words for storytelling
To be fair, Super Metroid is in the running for best game ever. Period. It builds on the good ideas from the old games and adds in nothing but awesome extras. No game made since this game has the flexibility and complex movement that Super Metroid did.
What i find amazing is that all the indie games that try to copy SM (and the few AAA attempts) still fall short of the full package is SM. Even masterpieces like Ori and the Will of the Wisps has its drawbacks (for the record, Ori is likely one of my favorite games in the past 10 years). I seriously cannot think of a single criticism of SM and I am a VERY shit talk heavy individual.
Super Metroid remains my favorite Metroid game even with the release of Metroid Dread and I play through it fairly regularly. I do not go for 100% completion, though I have considered it.
Unlike you, my first experience was not on the Wii U (though I did buy that version when it was offered for $0.50). I bought a cartridge from some guy who apparently needed a quick $20 and was offering it at a downtown arcade.
I played through it a few weeks ago. Completion time 2:11, item collection 81%. Looking at your 100% completion times makes me feel old and slow.
Super Metroid and Metroid dread both have the the best climaxes imo
I feel as though Nintendo has since underestimated the power of music in Metroid games. A huge reason why I believe Super Metroid stands out out among the others is because of it’s darker soundtrack. It really adds to the badass bounty hunter in scary territory vibe rather than a cheerful superhero coming to save the day. Dread was the only other 2D Metroid game that came close but it chose a more duffle route which ended up being less memorable

About phantoon. Nintendo mentioned that the wrecked ship belonged to the chozo and he attacked it causing them to crash onto zebes. Phantoon is an interdimensional being
Let me put it this way: Super Metroid is probably the best game to watch speed run this side of Mario 64. For a game that’s almost 30 years old, it has such deep mechanics it’s truly astonishing. The difference between someone who’s playing the game for the first time versus a speed running pro makes it look like a completely different game. And yet, speed runners don’t even really use glitches or exploit poorly designed levels. On the contrary, pretty much all the moves speed runners do were intended. Even a move like contentious wall jumping (look it up if you don’t know what it is) are just using the wall jump move given at the start of the game. It’s just using the built in move to thread a the needle of very cool sequence breaks.
I really hope they remake Super Metroid someday with Metroid Dread graphics. And if they ever do I hope they leave in as much of the sequence breaking as possible.

I think it's unfair to Metroid to say that Super inspired the Metroidvania genre. It was a big step in the right direction, but the original Metroid is the mother of Metroidvania games.
This should have been worded better, for that I apologize. My point was that Super Metroid is often what's used as a reference when Metroidvania is brought up. The things it introduced, like the map system, have become staples in the genre. If I had to compare Symphony of the Night for example to a single Metroid game, my mind immediately compares it to Super. The original Metroid walked so that Super Metroid and every other Metroidvania that came after could run.

Maybe it's just me but it bugs me when people refer as Metroid or Castlevania as Metroidvania. I get that they are the progenitors of the genre but i feel that that also excludes them from said genre. In other words, you can't be what you inspired, if that makes sense? Metroid is Metroid and Castlevania is Castlevania, the Mom and Dad off Metroidvania
To me, the genius of super Metroid has only ever be replicated by one other metroidvania: Hollow Knight!
