Matrix-1000 doing the Aphex Twin's "Rhubarb" sound

- This is in response to Alex Ball's video showing a Prophet 5 doing the "Rhubarb" sound. I am in no way intending to disrespect Alex Ball's work, as I am a fan of his myself. Just happened to have the synth, and wanted to show the awesomeness of the Matrix-1000, which as mentioned a lot online, was likely use a bit early on by Richard D. James. I apologize for the audio quality, not a pro, don't have time for anything fancier.
Beautiful
your fingers are too ;)

If reds here as a musician I feel like I'm in the right spot
@@sympalamusic9324 *gear nerd. He's a pretty amateur musician.
Thanks! Super flattered, love your videos!
I would love to have a massive stack of synth equipment some day. It looks so cool to have all those cables snaking around the room. You could just chill and make weird sounds all day
That sounds like heaven
@@jasongravely7217 it's a thing you can do...you can also use a daw and it'll get you lots of the way there
@@mickharvey764 yeah that’s what I do now but it just ain’t the same, even if the audio output is. I want dozens and dozens of cables to trip over and big cabs for cats to sit on
@@thekidwhodraws lol I hear ya bro. Definitely could go for studio life, we will one day...
Chill and make weird sounds all day. Couldn't have said it better myself.
"No i dont have a professional setup.." yet the camera is pointed at a sick rack of audio gear lol
It’s sick just not professional
i think hes talking about his set up for video audio
Camera setup

Same here bro in my house hahaha I always say to myself.. I don’t have much stuff (8u racks and a ton of synth and pedals and a mixer from FBT)
i noticed when you first play the matrix patch it has a tremolo quality to it and then with the reverb it has a chorused feel whereas the aphex twin track it just has a kind of straight thickness to it which is not interrupted by anything. its very close though and really impressive.
i would try add compression from there and that would thicken it and make it more constant than wavering.
@@bontempo1271 i was thinking that maybe a bit of tape stretching also might do the trick. hmmmm
My thoughts exactly. It also seems too bright but the right direction.
He might have just edited the patch with sysex. That was possible, and he has said he used a computer for music way back in the day. I wouldn't put it past him
the tasteful thickness of it
Just found this. Nice response bro. Polite and delightfully listenable.
i still have no idea how aphex twin made it sound like an actual woodwind instrument. in the song it sounds like you can hear wind blowing through a real flute.
I always just assumed it was a layered pad with a sampled flute.
Maybe he just used a real flute
saw 2 is all samples. theres little synth on it
Yeah now I'm beginning to believe that he used samples

This gives me the same goosebumps that I get whenever I listen to the original, so I’m going to say this is pretty much spot on!
Great video! I was gonna make some points here, out pretty much everyone else already said them. Great job, you’re very correct.
Nice! I chose to buy a Matrix 1000 a few years ago just from the rumours that it was the main synth for S.A.W. vol 2 and I must say I was not disappointed! I haven't actually tried this patch with rhubarb as yet though. I've been playing it on patch 352, which I highly recommend. Aphex used an alesis quadraverb for his effects in the early years. I have one of those as well and running the matrix through it is instant ambient goodness. Patch 086 on the M1000 is the sound from 'Lichen', at least on my one it is. I've found quite a lot of aphex sounds tinkering around with just the matrix and the quadraverb. great equipment and great tracks
you should upload yourself trying to recreate lichen
I time travel every time I hear this song as I've been in so many rooms listening to it over and over
reminds me how people think da funk was done with an ms-20 when daft punk never had an ms-20. the high pass filter stuff people think is being done with it can be done with the Juno 106's resonance because of the way it gets rid of the low end and daft punk 100% had a Juno 106. I have tested it and can confirm its closer. as for the different pitched oscillators, just have two notes at once... its polyphonic. (also forgot to mention you put it through a distortion pedal as a comment mentioned).
And I'm to take it that they probably distorted it with a pedal, like on Rollin and Scratchin?
@@cleverhardy5230 I forgot to mention that but yes
Very cool to see someone use rack mounted synths.
Beautiful, thank you for this video
Tearing up at the end there, well done!
great vid! Happy New Year!
Great job, sounds certainly in the direction!
Nice, btw that Ex8000 is also really nice ;) I own both with dedicated 3rd party programmers. Makes programming those synths, especially the 1000 way easier. Also, highly recommend upgrading the OS on the 1000 :)
Thanks, in the process of a kiwi upgrade.
I LOVE the Matrix "little" series: can you show/describe to us the main settings of this patch ? (I don't have any M but I do have some other gears that sound a bit like it [8P, Ultranova, Blofeld])
Tnx!
Sounds very close to the original, good job! I've heard some people say that Richard most probably used Matrix 1000 very extensively on SAW II but I've never seen anyone try to cover anything from the album using it. So thanks for finally doing it!
Just wanted to ask, do you mean Midiverb or Quadraverb? It's generally assumed he used the original Quadraverb on SAW 85-92 but it's less clear with SAW II
i thought you meant he made the score for the second SAW movie😭

What you meannnn, that's a professional set up man, love ittt just raw, not impressing anyone, much love
Very cool to see what it takes to makes those tracks…great job
What a cool find! Thanks for sharing!
this is wonderful....so close to pulling the trigger to get a matrix 1000 (or matrix 6?) 👍🏻
Oh man.. When you added the reverb... Perfect 🌤️
Sounds so good!
Such a beautiful song...
Wow, this sounds so close to the original. Nice job!
Beautiful! Very close indeed
That's exactly it - and I have never even heard the original, that's how close this is!
Sometimes we're the hammer, sometimes we're the nail. You definitely nailed this one 🤣
I would have guessed it was a Casio FZ10m on that track but that Matrix-1000 does sound really close when the reverb was added
So beautiful ❤️
Beautiful patch
(Leave a matrix 6 comment on Alex Ball's channel and get a reference to your video.) Very good rendition.
Would you be able to describe the settings of the preset? Just listening to it I would guess a filtered modulated pulse width with a long attack & decay but it would be cool to actually know hahaha
Best video on UA-cam.
A great artist can make anything work with what they have in their surroundings. RDJ is a great sonic artist. I love Rephlex, Warp etc. I wish we could see more music on the regular from those greats. Hell I bought Cheetah lol.
Cheetah is underrated
Excellent work. I feel like this M1K patch has a bit more of a square wave tone than the original track… but it’s very close.
This sounds great and pretty close, the reverb seems to be exactly the same
Wowza, I was not disappointed.
Well spotted. Sounds right to me!
Spot on! Sounds exactly like the orginal Could you do a full track cover?
Still hoping for this
Sounds so nice.
Alex Ball is finished after this! He will never touch another synth after this.
lol
I feel like Aphex Twin synthesized the sound, not using a sample instrument. He's called afx for a reason.
Ok.
This is what I pray for.
Haha
Perfect!
I got a Matrix 1k and I love it. Unison mode accessible with a software editor and you get all 8 osc at once.
THANK YOU
This is it!
Class!
sounds dope
amazing
Really cool
it sounds like heaven
Really nice. Very Super JX actually. How you like the SPX?
Thank you
Mmmmm what a great sound.
He did a similar thing with Stone In Focus…I could have sworn it was Tibetan singing bowls in a huge amphitheater
I really dug the sound on Ball's video, even though it didn't sound too much like the track. Pro5 is cool.
Pro 5 is probably one of the greatest synths ever made, it drips out sounds straight out of a john carpenter movie, but it wasn't the right demonstration of how to use it, I even think the Radiohead thing was overkill, especially since a Tohm used a Propher 08 much more, can even be seen using one Staircase live, and it goes for less than a third,, it would be like using a minimoog to make early Aphex twin sounds, not necessary.
interesting video. thanks!
very nice
Lovely. Very nice.
Wow now i’s can samples it! Thanks!!!!
youtube algoyrthm hit me with this and that sound always brings me to nirvana for a second
nice
sounds exactly like it! :D
Wish I had kept the Matrix 1000 I had but the Rev2 is pretty damn close in sound. This does sound like Aphex!!
This is probably the only video that I've ever seen thats in the "full" aspect ratio
Lots of presets on this synth was used by Aphex. You can easilly hear it if you browse through the original soundbank
Guh. I’m not a 90s kid, but I’m nostalgic as fuck for this stuff thanks. Gonna go listen to aphid twin again
*aphex
Very cool!
Nice work
So cool
Feeling blessed the yt algo sent me here
For a minute I thought you were talking about "Donkey Rhubarb"...
its was more than likely the dx7II simulatanously alongside the fz1 or fz10m the track would have been made around 92-93 his gear around 93 encorporated the dx7II extensively with grey matter thru quadverb the dx7 pitch envelope as well as the fz1's distinctive DCF can be heard widely throughout the album the use of the matrix 1000 seems to be a bit of an old watmm myth but this is pure speculation based on what richard has stated i don't know if anyone has evidence of richard stating this himself
bless you
What makes you say he used a DX7II? We know he had a DX100 from early on because he himself posted an old receipt for it, and it's commonly assumed he used it extensively on SAW 85-92. Since his debut was a moderate success, I'd think he had money by then to buy better synths because DX100 is a really cheap one. It's very plausible he could afford a Matrix 1000 by 1993. No idea about FZ1/FZ10m though, you might be on to something here
@@friendlystranger9662 DX7 is credeted largely throughout the early 90s 92 -93 timeframe in tracks like 24 ems-alias mgroove is feel really positive that the pitch envelope on white blur 2 is a dx7 but on rhubarb i reckon its a flute sample, sampled into the fz1/10m
@@rthe0 Thanks for the quick reply! You may be right. But can you tell a DX7 from a DX100, do they sound different? Or are you talking about the DX line in general? Not that it changes much, I'm just curious
@@rthe0 OK, just checked the liner notes for ems-alias mcgroove, you're right, he does mention a DX7 there. Nice!
Have you tried the Quadraverb for chorus/reverb? (if you have a Quadraverb) I think the chorus is digital and you might get even closer. I heard you mention Alesis as I was writing this comment :)
Seconded - he needs to be using a QuadraVerb. Ever since I got mine (after figuring out Aphex, Global Goon, etc. all used one) I've achieved that distinct digital shimmer I had been chasing for literally over a decade. There's nothing quite like it, really. And they're stupidly cheap. Loads better than a MIDIVerb or whatever else you're going for if you want that signature Aphex reverb tone.
Never had one, I'm sure it's probably amazing, just pretty content with my Yamaha FX rack, the reverbs are pristine.
It sounds quite close although you need more a lot more dry signal from the reverb output.
should do one for the nice soft chord sound we hear in windowlicker
Dayum!
thats it 100%
Good Shit!
TONIGHT!!
I wonder if thats the patch "Forest" thats on my Matrix-6
Pretty right on dude.
Wow!!
How did the algorithm know this exact sound was stuck in my head today....?
uve been cyberized with vaxxes?
I hope I'm not too late as it appears that your right hand speaker is on fire
Aphex was a piooner he just got acces to instruments in ealry ages and get super with them....but you can do lot of his things now with cheaper instruments
Can someone give a rundown of what that massive stack of devices is? What do they do
Pretty close -- RDJ's sound is less bright, less tremolo, and slower attack
so nice. the closest anyone’s probably ever gotten
I remember i went to buy a nord lead 1 once years ago and just flicking trough all the patches I heard loads of old autechre sounds...didn't buy it as it was 110v
How do you like the mioXL by the way?
heh top class, and almost certainly what RdJ used.
damn what is it about analog that sounds so beautiful
Everything
all that equipment and you can't record that through an interface?
When your rig sounds better over the phone than my speakers in my living room...... lol I definitely need better speakers
Get the June-60 original . You will be happy ! I had both V2 & June-60 . Sent that V2 back Sweetwater ...
