I enjoyed it. Not only was the episode loyal to its lore, but its doing enough to stand on its own. I like how we see Tess load her gun and it doesn't click smoothly. It means she uses that gun a lot and keeping weapons maintained is a hard resource to come by. Just like in the game. This is a great start.

Getting Ellie right is going to rely on showing her vulnerability as well as her confidence. Ellie in the game was so loveable because she had her no-nonsense badass attitude, combined with the fact that she is still just a child that can be naive and immature at times, but more than anything just wants to belong somewhere. I hope they don't overplay the boss side of her and make her more one-dimensional because of it.

@janetmillsrice she is a bit so far, I agree. I'm hoping that the other side of her will come put a bit more as we go. They did show her messing around at the desk in the hotel in episode 2, which felt more Ellie like.

Didn't Niel say he was gonna be adding in story elements from the original script that he wasn't able to put into the game because of time or budget constraints? Because here, I feel that what he said is true. Because in the opening of the game it seemed like Joel and his daughter had close ties with the community they lived in but was never touched on. If this is true, and I feel it is, then I hope I see more of it, because the community familiarity in the show seemed to make soo much sense when you compare it to the opening of the game when the neighbor breaks through the backdoor. It also explains where Joel was and why he came running into the house all of a sudden. So it makes sense and is probably true that Niel is adding in stuff that he was unable to put into the original game. Think about it.

I think scenes in which they have to maneuver through portions of cramped indoor areas filled with spores, obstruction vision and giving a sense that something is looming nearby is great for tension and suspense. Ugh! So good! It also makes sense that Marlene and Joel know each other through Tommy and why Joel would risk leaving the city. Him just going out for guns didn't really feel super compelling in the game, but I got it. Guns would be a finite resource.

What I like is that the things they didn’t directly adapt still advances the story. Like Sarah is a main character to me now. You feel the loss in the game and know it haunts Joel but imo, the way they showed everything from her POV and we saw little things like her going to fix the watch, her going to the neighbors, her actually having scenes outside of the outbreak with Her uncle tommy even if it was such a small scene made me feel so much more when she dies and will stick to me so much more throughout the season in a way it didn’t in the games. And the way their is such a huge difference in her in Elle. The writer said in the behind the episode that they wanted to focus on Elle and Sarah’s reaction to seeing Joel kill. Sarah sees Joel kill the neighbor and even though he had to and should have, Sarah is confused and sad and cries. When Elle sees Joel kill the guard, you see this gaze in her eye that is a hint of fear but also an embrace that shows a glimpse of how destined for each other Joel and Elle are but also how toxic in a way that is somewhat needed because the environment but also dangerous. It is the beginning of a bond that the writer says begs the question of is this type of love always good? They eventually are willing to kill and make extremely primal decisions for each other. Like Joel is willing to kill every single person on the planet and doom everyone to this apocalypse to save Elle. And Elle in revenge for Joel death in part 2 is willing to do and kill anyone to avenge her adopted father.

As someone who has an outsider perspective into this show (never played a single second of the game and have barely seen footage, don't even know what it's about besides the setting of a post zombie outbreak) and i really like the show so far. The first 20-30 minutes are AMAZING! Never been so hooked in the first 20 minutes before.

Focusing on the daughter and making her the "main character" in the intro was also a genius move and her and pedros acting when she died gave me goosebumps! Not saying that's what you're saying, just that a portion of the show's audience seems hung up on whether HBO's Ellie is attractive. Kind of an odd criticism, realy - Ellie in the game isn't a supermodel. She looks like a regular 14 year old. Yep, worse part about Last of Us II is buying the game with Joel and Ellie in mind, and then having 1 hour with Joel despite the years that have passed between both games. They could've expanded more on that in the game, and then also had a more organic discovery of Joel's name and address, and it would've been 'ok'.

About the part with the kid you see a sign that says a leg bite can take up to 14-24 hours so he might not have been immune

I really like they streamlined the storylines to make it less video game-y and more believable. Robert wouldn't be the type to have 20 armed guards for Joel and Tess to kill.

Would have really liked to see the shootout between Robert's team and the Fireflies. Also see Tess be more of a badass like in the game.

I want spores and gas masks, even if they reduced it/changed a bit. It's shame they got rid of it completely. It added so much tension to many scenes and lead to lot of memorable scenes.

From what I heard is that there adding something new where the fungus on the wall and floor are linked together like a hive so if they step of the fungus on the floor all the clickers and runners are alerted

I am sorry I didn't realize I had to list every show, movie, book, comic and any other property that uses a hive mind concept. And key words were planned to be used in the game and rumors that it might be used in the TV show, meaning it didn't happen in the game and still don't know if it's going to happen yet in the show. But you know who is recently using the hive mind concept as a plot, Stranger Things ... But again I enjoyed The Last of Us game and the show looks to be off to a great start. I am sorry if an opinion I made ruffled your feather's 🙄

@AngryJoeShow Sorry Joe but when it comes to TV shows, Alex is much more on point you should give him more space to lead the conversation. Alex touched exactly what I am fearing most and what I am as well thinking going to happen - one of the main reasons people hated 'The Last of Us 2' was because the first game established a story line where you have a grey world with people acting not on a black and white spectrum where the hero is a hero but he isn't perfect and the villians aren't necessarily the villains and the 'good rebels' might be quite evil themselves even if its for good intentions. What I fear most is that instead of realizing this is what made the game good, Niel gonna double down on his horrible choices in the second game that tried to ignore that aspect and just make the Fireflies as Alex said into a bunch of diverse(mostly PoC and female) saints that do only good only so viewers will hate Joel (cutting the information that previous research had led to failure will serve just as well to do so).

It was a stellar furst episode. If they keep it up could easily be a hit this year and one of the first videogame to television adaptations that is overall well recieved.
