Make Way for Tomorrow came out right as Social Security was being created. The film is a depiction of why Social Security could be so critically important for most Americans.
Hey Paul! Loved seeing you in Twisters. Your cameo had a funny progression for me. I noticed it was you, then it seemed like they weren't going to give you much to do, then you had that great second part where you're talking to Glenn in the car, which cracked me up. Glad to see you on the big screen.
Mikey & Nicky is class. Think if you were familiar with Cassavetes work & then discovered it, you'd assume he directed it, especially as he stars in it too. The film feels extremely Cassavetes-esque. Elaine May had such an incredibly underrated directorial career, so much great work in there.
Exactly what happened with me. Watched multiple Cassavetes-directed movies then saw Mikey & Nicky and couldn’t believe he didn’t make it. One of my all time favorites
Me watching Klute the first time: "Oh, this must be the scene that ensured Fonda her Oscar." [a couple scenes later] "Oh, no, this is the scene that ensured Fonda that Oscar." [a couple scenes later] "Silly me, this is definitely the scene that ensured Fonda the Oscar." Over and over again. And that's how Jane Fonda won her Oscar.
Love Paul Scheer in everything! And this is great! Most people grab something, say they like it in a pretentious way and move on. He actually says the title and explains why he likes it.
All great picks. "Make way for tomorrow" inspired Ozu's "Tokyo Story" (1953) and was remade as "Love is strange" (2014) with John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as the couple.
Same haha hate him as a person but his book is fucking fantastic and mishima blew me away so i love the ARTIST paul schrader not the person lol. A ps episode would kill
I’m using Paul’s closet picks, to unashamedly plead Criterion Collection have Bobby Lee, visit the closet after his appearance on Bill Mahers podcast lol
I don’t think so because the original 1972 version of The Heartbreak Kid is owned by some company that is being a tightwad and is not going to bother releasing it on Blu-Ray
@@claytoncondo3460 Then the Criterion Collection should be leading a global protest against its owner. Pitchforks, torches, assault rifles, etc. Are they in this restoration game for real, or are they dilletantes?
Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) and Best Years of Our Lives (1946) are my Top 2 "Get ready to Cry your Eyes Out" movies. How "Make Way..." didn't win Best Picture is beyond me, at least "Best Years" deservedly did!
Two Land Blacktop... reminds me of a movie of this guy that just drives through the whole movie... except for this one sequence when he stops to meet Charlotte Rampling, who was supposed to be death or some symbolic person. Anyway, I can't remember the title. Have to see Two lane blacktop as well.
That is the great VANISHING POINT (1971), but the Charlotte Rampling sequence is only on the British version of the film, unreleased in the USA until VP came out on video.
Two Laine Blacktop is one of my all time faves. Always thought James Taylor was an uncool wimp until this movie. Still can't listen to his music but he was awesome in this.
*Paul:* I've been collecting Criterion for a very long time. *Me, who has been collecting for 2 years and has almost 200:* Wow he must have hundreds! *Paul:* I think I have about fifty... *Me:* 😳🙈 ...yeah I have a problem...
I've never wanted to be an actor. I've never wanted to hang around with actors. But now, I just want to be an actor so I can go into the Criterion closet and fill a bag with their beautifully packaged, extras packed, classic movies. Is that wrong?
Paul Scheeer only owns 50 Criterions? Those are all great choices, and I envy him seeing Klute for the first time. It's billed as a murder mystery, but the plot is actually irrelevant. It's really a study of Jane Fonda's character, a call girl who wants to become an actress. Fonda's performance as Bree Daniels is revelatory.
Great comedic actor and total cinema aficionado.
Hope to hear Paul brag about this appearance to June and Jason on the next HDTGM
"Are we on Unspooled right now?!?"
Face Waterfalls all round
@@JeffKelly03 I 100% read this in Jason's voice
@@BrokenTreeProd Then my work here is done.
@@BrokenTreeProdI read *everything* in Jason’s voice
Love Paul's infectious enthusiasm!

Love Paul on Unspooled! His enthusiasm is infectious! Criterion, please kindly bring more of your titles to the UK, thanks in advance!
I saw Klute at the Prince Charles cinema in London the other week and it was fantastic. What a great movie.

Very under appreciated film!

I like that he picked some obscure cult classics. All of them great
So happy for you Paul. Thank you a million times for everything (especially Human Giant) Your love of movies is infectious
Great picks, but the title is wrong, that's Tall John Scheer
Love Paul Scheer in everything!
And this is great! Most people grab something, say they like it in a pretentious way and move on. He actually says the title and explains why he likes it.
This was a great one. Paul picked films you don't always see others choosing and made me want to check them out.
Great choices! I saw Klute as a way too young child and it stayed with me when hundreds of others faded. Still an all time classic for me.
The way I paused everything I was doing to watch this! Love Paul!
nice surprise! paul scheer is always great and he comes off very passionate in this video, thoughtful comments good picks
New favorite installation. Wouldnt’ve thunk it! Thank you!
The soundtrack of Klute is so great; it uses music as sound fx and sound fx as music (among other things!)
You're in for a treat with Klute. An amazing film.
Really awesome recommendations here, I love when people choose the more underrated/unknown titles and really do their research
Welles said Make Way for Tomorrow can make a stone bleed. Great pick, that and Hopscotch from Ronald Neame, his Tunes of Glory is kickass too
Damn this is one of the best ones I've seen, he knows his shit
What a cool guy. Love this. And, wow, Monte Hellman. And GTO, Ed Harris, and wow again. Just subscribed to the Criterion channel and It's just great.
Good recs. I had only heard of Klute before, not seen any of them. Will seek out.
Love the casual “I’m friends with Jane Fonda” drop since his wife was on Grace and Frankie
If you're friends with Jane Fonda, you really should watch possibly her greatest performance- glad you picked up "Klute."
I almost jumped when I misread Paul Schrader. Still a great vid and solid picks though!
Hopscotch is a wonderful movie (one of the few that's much better than the book IMO)...I should dig out my copy and give it a watch soon.
I saw it in the theater as a kid. Recently rewatched a few weeks ago. Still awesome.
Love me some Walter Matthau. One of my favorite actors ever.
@@peybak His interaction with Glenda Jackson in this film is absolutely wonderful.
Finally, someone picked Walker
Wow, I haven't seen any of these....time to catch up!
I love Paul's film podcast How Did This Get Made?
also check out Unspooled
You can never really know where peoples taste lies, but I have to say - to my mind this mans taste is impeccable.
Thanks Paul!
Paul is the definition of high energy charisma that is always pleasant
Love his enthusiasm!!!!!
Two-Lane Blacktop! Yes!
Holy moly! Two Lane Blacktop has a Criterion release?😳
I love how excited he is.
Two Lane Blacktop is awesome. A great ASMR film too
I want to work for Criterion. How do I work for Criterion. I'll guard the closet or sweep up the movie crumbs I'll do whatever
my favorite elaine may joint is still A New Leaf, what an oddball unique "romantic comedy"
Yes, but what about this check?
Just watched A New Leaf recently, it was great fun!
All great picks. "Make way for tomorrow" inspired Ozu's "Tokyo Story" (1953) and was remade as "Love is strange" (2014) with John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as the couple.
He practiced this at home. Love him
Read this as Paul Schrader’s Closet Picks and got unduly excited
Yeah, he’s a total hottie.
Sorry, you don’t deserve that today.
Same haha hate him as a person but his book is fucking fantastic and mishima blew me away so i love the ARTIST paul schrader not the person lol. A ps episode would kill
Don't sleep on Tall John Scheer
😂
I’m using Paul’s closet picks, to unashamedly plead Criterion Collection have Bobby Lee, visit the closet after his appearance on Bill Mahers podcast lol
Bobby would have to fly to NYC to do it but that would be interesting.
My boy Paul Scheer with the Mikey and Nicky pick. I fucking love that film.
Walker, Two Lane Blacktop and Hopscotch. All fantastic pucks.
Hockey!
Keep your discs off the ice!
“I can say ‘moist.’ Moist is the classy ‘wet.'” Just for you Paul. Wonderful picks.
Love Paul Scheer, his picks are a class act
“Mikey and Nicky, Mikey and Nicky! How great is Mikey and Nicky?”
WHEN IS CRITERION GOING TO RELEASE THE HEARTBREAK KID SO I MAY REST?
I don’t think so because the original 1972 version of The Heartbreak Kid is owned by some company that is being a tightwad and is not going to bother releasing it on Blu-Ray
Amen

Leo McCary won 2 Oscars for Director.
The Awful Truth and Going My Way.
Some impressive films on that filmography!
Thanks Paul! Love ya Paul!
You'll LOVE Klute
So nice to see Tall John in the Criterion closet. GEO STORM!
Hopscotch is so underrated. Great flik.
Hello People of Earth!
Paul Scheer was great in the Upright Citizens Brigade TV show.
Paul is the best. U guys need to check out his memoir.
These video need to be longer
Finally some love for Hopscotch!! Great, fun, funny movie
These would be better if they were longer.
Did not know two lane blacktop was on criterion, just added it to my cart lol
Regardless of what I think about Jane Fonda as a person she is utterly brilliant in KLUTE.
Walker has a great soundtrack by Joe Strummer
The track "The Brooding Side Of Madness" is incredible!
Ooo that was fun!
Walker fucking owns sir.
Damn those are some great picks
hoss chose some certified bangers
FINALLY!!!! never forget, gang, this man has a pet robot & its mission has yet to be revealed. JDR for everything, any year! Hooray !
Paul Scheer in the Criterion Closet?
How did his get made?
Two lane blacktop is awesome. Recently got it from criterion
This is so cute, he's like beaming for five minutes non stop
Among the great character actors of the 21st century
What! You couldn't fit June and Jason into the Criterion Closet with you, Paul? Wait until they hear about this. Unbelievable.
Loved him in twisters lol
Was that him in twisters?
Real cineaste choices. Make way for tomorrow is kind of like the American Tokyo Story and of course , Klute is a masterpiece

That is the great VANISHING POINT (1971), but the Charlotte Rampling sequence is only on the British version of the film, unreleased in the USA until VP came out on video.
By the way, Charlotte does not represent death but Circe. The film is an imagination of THE ODYSSEY on wheels.
Hopscotch is fabulous.
"Walker" fkn rules 😍
Paul was enraptured 😂❤
You were great in twisters 🌪️ Andre
The real star of Twisters
Klute is indeed amazing!!
Two Laine Blacktop is one of my all time faves. Always thought James Taylor was an uncool wimp until this movie. Still can't listen to his music but he was awesome in this.

Criterion Closet Unspooled.
This video is definitely a successor to their Amoeba Records Human Giant What's in My Bag video .
Great 😊
How did they all get made?

I'm surprised Paul Scheer was in cameo of Twisters
I thought he was quite good in his 2 minute cameo.
I like this dude
One of the more restrained guests with only six picks - some interesting ones there.
I wonder what criteria is needed to visit the closet.
