Harakiri (1962) by Masaki Kobayashi is my favorite movie ever ! Absolutely stunning, Top Notch in acting, cinematography, storytelling. The greatest and most powerful film for me.
Toronto has its own version of the Criterion Closet, Bay Bloor Video, one of the video stores in the city. The shelves literally looks identical, with a good selection of Criterion on its shelves, including some discontunued titles.
I noticed the Kiwi lady, Gemma (?) was holding the Japanese film directed by the great Yasujiro Ozu called "Ohayo" (Good Morning) near the end there but didn't mention it. It's one of my favourite films ever, I highly recommend it to everyone. Criterion are a real blessing, I've bought so many of their collections and films that are almost impossible to find elsewhere, Thanks Criterion and Letterboxd too for spreading the word about all those underrated classics. Love ya's !
I watched Uncut Gems around seven times when it came out and I never need to watch it again. I was enamoured with the Safdie brothers back then, so I knew about the movie two years before seeing it and watched a pirated screener, then saw it in theaters, then on streaming a few times each. I think I'll watch it again in 20 years or something.
It would be cool if on a Friday over beers you guys talked about adding shared lists to letterboxed that multiple people can contribute to. Doubt it would be that hard to implement as that feature exists in other apps
She pulled that Beauty and the Beast -no.6, from all the way up at the top left shelf, with no. 13 Silence of the Lambs sticking out just after it. So, the closet must be set up by spine number, starting at top left.
I'd love to see the Amazon clipboard carries that run IMDb try to be half as cool and cinephile as you guys. We all know what the platform for real film lovers is 💪
1:54 Uncut Gems should have been advertised as a comedy a la a Cohen brothers farce. And that's not a slight to Uncut Gems, I think it's a brilliant film, but it's clearly also a comedy and not accidentally so. I find Rick and Morty uncomfortable, I find Curb Your Enthusiasm uncomfortable, so how is it that Uncut Gems makes people who like this other stuff so distraught?
That was honestly a bit cringy… The main reason many of us watch Criterion Closet videos is to hear experienced film experts and industry professionals select films and talk about why they are special… and this video was just some employees picking movies off a list and had so little actual wisdom, insights, or experience to share. No wonder this channel has no followers.
then rewatch those videos man, it's that simple. These people are from Letterboxd, so it's obvious that some of their picks will be based on their app. You're the one who's cringe and sounds jealous lmao

The most heartwarming closet video
This is such a crazy crossover and I am here for it !
This is so weird seeing their faces after listening to their podcasts for the past year..
Harakiri (1962) by masaki kobayashi is my samurai movie, best cinematography, and the criterion collection is a best film. Emanuel
Why doesn't criterion allow for us to purchase full size posters of their cover designs???

Yes, Criterion is from New Zealand and she is the owner.
Letterboxd needs a video feature. I want TikTok but JUST movie buffs
I can't...the frame of reference is SO limited. Do these people know that films were released prior to 1980??
