Oh boy, what a super special find! A 1950 56R Riviera with the massive bucktooth grill and a rare manual trans! This is definitely worth hanging on to!
Now this is an amazing car/piece of history. Straight 8 buick engines are legendary. If anyone can bring that back to life, its Cold War Motors and the usual gang of suspects. :)
That Buick is so complete she deserves the slight structural and sheet metal rebuilds and restoration. straight 8 with a 3-speed column shift. Love it. all of it.
I did some research! (Which I love to do.) 1950 Buick Super Riviera. Model 56R, in what looks like Cirrus Green. The first thing I'd like to know is if it still has Buick's (in)famous accelerator-starting feature, which Buick used from the mid-30s through 1960. My understanding of its operation is this: Stepping on the accelerator pedal pivoted a tube near the carb, which caused a steel ball inside to fall to one end of the tube, shorting out contacts to engage the starter. Once the engine was running, a vacuum fitting at the other end of the tube provided suction that drew the steel ball away, and held it there as long as the engine was running. As a fail-safe backup, the starter motor was grounded through the generator; if the generator was producing current, it switched from a negative to a positive ground, further preventing the starter motor from operating if the engine was running. Pressing the accelerator pedal down about 1/3 of the way opened the throttle and engaged the starter, firing these cars up with what was called "the Buick roar." However, many Buicks with this system were later molested with add-on starter buttons that bypassed this system. What that gains in simplicity costs it costs in authenticity. It also removes what today could be a great anti-theft feature. :-) Buick pioneered turn signals ("Flash-Way direction signals") in 1939. At first they only operated in the rear; the "BUICK EIGHT" badge on the deck lid was modified with red lenses, the "BUICK" side for the left signal and the "EIGHT" side for the right. In 1940 the front parking lights were wired up as well, so the Flash-Way signals showed both front and rear. That "4 o'clock" steering wheel position for the control lever was the original location. I'd thought that, by 1950, they'd moved it to the present-day 9:00 position, but I guess that came a year or two later. (Chrysler already was using that position for its turn signal lever.) While this was not a four-Ventiport Buick (only the Roadmaster enjoyed that privilege for 1950) it was a GM C-Body (luxury sized) car. Add in (as others have noted) torque-tube drive, coil springs in back (no Hotchkiss setup for Buick!), the Fireball Straight-8, and a grille that could consume dawdling, hesitant Priuses like hors d'oeuvres, and you've got a great new addition to the Cold War Motors fleet. Congrats! Here's the original brochure: www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Buick/1950_Buick/1950_Buick_Brochure/dirindex.html
hey Scott Kenneth here just now seeing the 50 Buick video wow don't know how I missed that and you can't have too many cars especially with your skill the old Buick is worthy of your skill
Excellent video ,Scott ! The way it bounced after coming off of the trailer reminded me of the way these old heavyweights used to glide down the highway back when I was a kid in the late 1950's. I wish I could go back to those days for a visit . In one respect , I do ,when I watch you rebuild these babies. Yours is a wonderful endeavor that preserves important pieces of our history that would otherwise be forgotten and left to decay and disappear. Just love the Ms. Frankers "But there's a big cat right there , can't you see it? " . It is oh so cool that you have Ms. Frankers in all of your videos .You make great videos ,Scott ,with people making great comments. Your work is very much admired and appreciated !!!
Man this old buick is awsome! When they say lead sled theyre talking about this baby. One of Detroits finest, straight eight! What a find! 1950 Rivvy, fantastic! revved up yooper
I Love that old Buick...so sweet. Another worth while find, I wish I was with you guys, my wife says I am nuts, and if you were around she would see, there are lots of us. She says I should seek professional help, I told her that would just take bucks away from the stuff I need to buy for no reason.
I used to not particularly care about the early '50's cars but since I've been watching your program they are really growing on me. There was an eccentric pair of old music teachers who used to live in my hometown back in the early '70's. They basically had kept every car they had ever owned in their backyard and an early fivety's Buick straight eight was one of them. They were driving at the time a '59 Impala. They refused all offers of buying their cars. I'm sure that they could have used the money as they were pensioners when I knew them. I used to load their grocerys into the '59 Chev and it had about a quarter inch of dirt on the back seat and a square spot where the grocerys went each fortnight.
Nice save and what a cool old girl!! I can't wait to hear it run and take the tour around the yard. Another great video by cold war motors, thanks Scott.
What a great find ! Looked amazing in the dark and even more so in the light of day ! I really enjoy seeing all your collection not many like that this side of the Pond !
PLEASE get this one back on the road ! It's an amazing looking old survivor with the kind of wonderful trim detail and unique period Look that we'll never see again ...and that easy bounce is just showing you that Buick's 'Boulevard Ride' is still working as it should !
What a great classic Buick! Being a fan of classic fullsize cars of the golden aera, let us say from 1940 to the late Sixties, I get really exited and I cannot help but grinning all over my face.Specially the pre 55 cars are still kind of underrated. Never ever cars were built as solid and reliable as during this period. Although i must admit that seeing finned monsters of the later Fifties make my heartbeat speed up even more! Thanks for sharing this wonderful find with all of us! Cannot wait for your next update!
Night videos leaves so much to the imagination... Loving it! OMG be careful! Look at those tail lights, they look like ancient Christmas candy YES but those seats, where’s the fabric? No shocks AHHHHHH! 50 Buick, Thumbs WAY up!!!! POST SCRIPT: No split windshield is so cool for a 1950! Love this car!!!
Yep!! Harley Earl at his finest. Anxious to hear that old straight eight start up and purr. Those old Buick radio's sounded pretty good. I swapped one of them into a 48 Ford Construction pickup my dad used to drive back in the late 50's. Sounded pretty good with just its internal speaker. This will probably be a pretty nice to drive car with the eight and the stick. Let's see how a pro fixes that floor and rocker/post.
Pops would definitely have given this one TWO thumbs up. He was a Buick-Man through and through, although garden variety 4 door models. Once again, God Bless you fellas, for saving these heaps, from the crusher. This one truly deserves a sympathetic restoration and to be back on the road.. Can't wait to hear that straight 8 purr. Video editing seemed to get kind of messed up this time around. No worries, I'll keep tuning in.
The tune she was strumming on the winch cable as you were letting her down from the trailer sort of reminded me of your intro music. Looks like she just rolled out of looney toons. Didn't "want to end up a cartoon in a cartoon graveyard" so she came to Cold War Motors. I think you should call her Betty. Wonderful.
Hah! you almost threw me for a loop when you said you didn't take it! I always look forward to seeing what you've found next. This Buick, along with that '60 Fury seems like a car that deserves to be put back on the road for how well (most) of it has survived, original paint and all. That grille though with that rust is some next level Jeepers Creepers type stuff, can you image seeing that thing coming for you late night on an empty road, 6V headlights and all? damn. Cheers from BC!
This is a dream car. Straight Eight and that killer grill. back in the late fifties and early sixties (and beyond) they used to use GM straight eights in fuel dragsters. Talk about a unique sound !! These are tough engines. This has got be restored for the road. You should make a daily driver out of this - please !!!
Beautiful Buick! That floor is pretty bad but if anybody can fix it, you are the man. I'd love to have one of these just for yard art but driving would be even better. Now you have me wanting one for myself.
That grille was always a love it / hate it styling thing, but from the hood on back, that car was gorgeous from any angle. I always liked the 50 & 51 Lincolns just a bit more, but only by a a very small bit. Heartbreaking to see the floor & rockers like that, but still a great addition to the hoard :)

@@MY50CC Oh yes, the Pontiac's we're the only car that had an illuminated hood ornament that I knew of. About once a month our family would drive from Milwaukee to Chicago, the trip back was usually at night so l kept a keen eye out for Pontiac's and if I saw one, I would urge my father to pass it so as to see that cool hood ornament lit up.

Oh boy, what a super special find! A 1950 56R Riviera with the massive bucktooth grill and a rare manual trans! This is definitely worth hanging on to!
Hey, thanks for the note and for checking out the Buick... A real treat to have a hardtop, for sure! Cheers.
I love the sound of the car being lowered off of the trailer. Like an ancient shipwreck being dragged from its watery grave.
i just love how, no matter what condition the cars are in, those guys always find something positive to say about them. True Gearheads!
Love your Albertian dead pan... you had me going for a minute aboot leaving the Riviera!
I watch this for the 3rd time. Please bring this one back. Such a cool car!
Seeing that thing roll off the trailer was like watching a WWII battleship being launched out of drydock! Hahaha
You Gotta bring this one back! 1950 straight *8* with a 700 lbs. grill. Outrageous!
The cats meow , looks like its haunted
Glad you got that Buick because now it will be saved and brought back to amazing shape
Cool Cool adding to the collection 👍absolutely love the 50 Buick styling. It's my favorite of them all. Cheers from Michigan. See you Saturday

Looking at a car, flashlight in hand at 2pm. Of course! That’s what life is all about.
This is not SOS. Y'all win by miles, or kilometers, or whatever. This is so cool!!!
There's always room for one more.... absolutely ... Great car.
I really love the old buiwreck
Another classic. Like that front grill
This would fill the bill for many videos to come after the Fury gets finished. That rusted away door pillar will be an interesting fix to watch.
That car is baaad-ass! Love to see you get it going. That grill looks like it came out of an old monster movie. Fantastic.
Great addition to the family, imagine it painted jet black, chrome rims, all that trim and body lines, so very cool.
Please build it and get it running! I love the waterfall grill on this car! So cool!!!!!!!

One of the most iconic front ends ever !
Great old car, looking forward to "WILL IT RUN?"

I really appreciated the Hitchcockian twist at the end. I actually laughed out loud.

Nice save and what a cool old girl!! I can't wait to hear it run and take the tour around the yard. Another great video by cold war motors, thanks Scott.
As much as I love the Frazer I'd make this Buick a daily driver in a second. Sure motor's stuck, floors aren't really there but what a gorgeous car.
This IS my favorite! Cant wait to see it run! Thanks guys!
What a survivor! So nice, would love to hear that straight 8 running.
I can imagine a bunch of gangsters riding around in that beast.
Scott , you have a beauty there ......floors are shot .......worth saving for sure
One of my favorite car's the 1950 Buick
Regardless of the styling or how many cars you have, you NEED a straight-8 daily driver!

The Buick is a fine addition to the fleet! I will look forward to future videos! Thank you and Frankers so much.

I was temporarily disappointed as well! That's a nice "front row" addition, a Frankers-approved car.
The sqid's catchin' up QUICK .... !!!
That car has a lot of character
Excellent once again sir.....your cars are more interesting and enjoyable than Jay Leno's collection!
Very cool. Love your collection of cars.
I'd love to watch you bring this beauty back to life and get an MOT , It. deserves to be driven and enjoyed 😎😎😎😎😎
That is one wild looking car with a sweet straight 8! Can't wait to see more of it :D

What a sweet find and such good condition, a little bit floor pieces, fix up the interior & fresh gas.
Congratulations !

I love the look of this car! This is one of my C.W.M. favorites! The other is the black and white 57 Plymouth Plaza!
Amazing find! LOVE IT! I have a 49 Buick Roadmaster Riviera....

The Buick Dinosaur transmission probably the worst feature of old Buicks. Nice that this one has a 3 speed manual!
I love this car, it is so complete, worth doing a little work to see if she runs.
Can't wait for the will it run!
This car is AMAZING ! I look forward to the "DEAN" reaction! Newk from Kentucky
I had a friend back in high school in the late 1950s with one just like that, except Dynaslow. Nobody argued with Terry when he aimed for a parking place. What a tank! We had a lot of fun with that car. Hope you can save this one. It does seem to have some "issues."
That is one high quality machine.
Despite the issues on the inside this ol Buick is pleasingly a solid ride. The fact that it's a straight 8 only sweetens the deal. They are really great sounding engines and truly hope to see a Will It Run episode soon! And a little Classic Tire is always satisfying as well. Hopefully Frankers will reform from chasing the kitty's so she won't have to be incarcerated anymore. Poor Baby! Hope to see you again real soon. Cheers!
Love 50's Buicks, very cool find,
Very cool. This deserves to be brought back to life.
My wife and I bought a 47 with a straight 8 and restored it and used it as our wedding car. Great old tank of a thing. Coach work by Holden for those aussies that lurk on here.

Love the Buick!! I have a 55 Buick special riviera. Very nice cars 👍🏼👍🏼
You HAVE to put that back on the road !
How many cars do you need? ALL OF THEM!
I'm just "stalking" waiting around for coldwarmotors to go into hardship "sell-mode"....then I'm going to pick up restored bargain basement $ cars. Problem is CWM operates their business in hardship.
How much Room do you have?
Nah, not all of 'em, just the unbuffed, hardly cared-for dirty ones who deserve all of a mad'n slightly grumpy beard's love at a time ...
Man I love this car it’s beautiful
Looking forward to the next "My classic tire" about that drivers front bias ply on the Buick ! lol!
