Yes! I was told to stretch and it just makes the symptoms worse. My physio acknowledges this. It doesn’t really have an alternative. I’m so glad to see someone finally addressing this. Thank you! Will this exercise build up strength to help prevent symptoms in future?
This is great! More Videos on building up the deep neck muscles would help a lot. Sometimes the SCM’s seem to engage and overcompensate so anything to prevent that would help as well. Also identifying these parts of the neck so you know what should be engaging and what shouldn’t. Keep it up thanks so much!!

A couple days later, my neck was flush and my breathing depth changed. Started feeling fatigue and dizziness, we well as general instability. I haven't been able to get an MRI or CT scan, but it feels like a stabilizer muscle from the back to the shoulder to the neck has atrophied or "detached." There was no pain when I heard the snap, but the neck has felt weak and misaligned since.

Research on Chiropractic care shows short term relief only. My programs are 10% mobilization of the neck and 90% exercise to improve the stability of the cervical spine. The research is strong on this approach and has been shown to have long term relief.
Great video, good explanation and very good exercises! Thank you very much. Just want to add that the tightness of the muscles in the neck are not only a symptom. The autonomous nerve system is actually just doing its job as it tries to stabilize the instability of the cervical spine by making the muscles tight. I developed cervical issues two years ago and stretching always felt wrong and uncomfortably, despite there are so many videos out there telling you to stretch....
@@royalhumbler2767 Tinnitus (ringing / noise in the ears), cracking sounds in the cervical spine and the tmj and sometimes headaches. Symptoms can be almost away one day and return on the next morning.
I don’t have any neck pain but I do have somatic tinnitus and some TMD. Would these exercises still be appropriate for tinnitus relief that isn’t due to hearing loss?
Iron neck (in my opinion) would be more appropriate for an athlete or someone that does not suffer from chronic neck pain or instability. Chiropractic care is research proven to give short term relief but not long term relief. Some say "short term relief, long term dependency". Thanks for watching!
I know we are all different, but as a last resort I went to both nucca and chiropractic care and paid the price for both ! I wouldn’t recommend it at all !!
3rd exercise makes impact... does it makes the difference how we pull the arm back? Btw from my experience it's important to shift your centre of gravity back - that will relieve your neck from tension
I am helping people to make this understand all my carreer. Sorrily we work against all this mainstream thinking about. Why are we not smart enough to see how structural integrity is what the foundation problem is?! Also people with pain find somebody who is doing 'skeleton/periosteum fibrotic release'. I call it Cranio-Sacral fibrotic release. All my clients with lots of pain are all getting much better. There we find lots of draped fibrotic tissues squeezing many little nerves and hold back Blood circulation. All this release = better circulation less headaches and pain.
Can cervogenic headache be vaused by neck, occular, and upper back pain? And can all that cause vertigo, mimicking bppv? Or is there no way any of that can mimic bppv?
@@physiotipswithmarrow5836 if you have the eyes moving during the epay maneuver and the room is spinning, is that bppv or can cervogenic headache combined with neck, ocular, and upper back pain also cause this same sensation? My ent said I have bppv. My neuro said I seem to have two separate things. My pt said I look to have two separate things. All I know is my biggest complaint is my neck, ocular, and upper back quickly followed by head pain pressure that seems to resemble cervogenic headache and not migraine. I have vertigo but only if I bend over with my head tucked or laying down and moving my head to either side and it's not every time but it happens. I can feel my neck almost pulling on the fascia in my head when I tilt my head up or down. I honestly feel the sensation above my eyes, my forehead, all of that is for sure referring back to ocular region and the levator scapulae and as those muscles get pulled on, it pulls on mu skull in the front and I think that and the pain in my neck is what's giving me this vertigo. I'm not an expert. I cant prove it. But I know it's true. All the vertigo episodes involve my neck. That's what confuses me with these diagnoses. I thought inner ear wasnt the only way to get vertigo. Cant neck pain that triggers headaches cause vestibular system dysfunction? Or is it all about these crystals and that's inner ear ask bppv? It's enough to make your head spin.
Great question. The towel procedure is an osteopathic technique to manipulate the C1/2 facet jt. It is not a stretch for the muscles and does not require the neck to move laterally. Hope that helped and thanks for watching!
@@physiotipswithmarrow5836 Thank you for your answer! I am suprised to learn that, beacuse it always seemed to me that it was very similar to the pushing-your-chin-to-the-side stretch.
Hi Mr. Burnette, Are we less likely to clench our jaws if we sleep on our back? I sleep on my sides and clench like there's no tomorrow (and wake up exhausted). Can you think of anything else that might also help? Thank you! :)

Question: if someone has "Instability" say of Alar, Facet, Nuchal... Wouldn't this be the reason the muscles are already overworked? Thus more exercise would just continue the muscle degradation? Some with Posterior Atlantooccipital Membrane tears can't even look up without symptoms. OR - we have a misunderstanding of the real pathology going on. Can I interview you for my CCI Group?
3 subsystems for cervical joint stability. The ligaments, the bones, and the muscles. We can usually overcome some instability by restoring the stabilizing muscles around the injured joints (they will often be atrophied). Strong research for a stability approach vs stretching. Thanks for watching!
I had a ball hit me in the back of the head 6 years ago. Agter 2 very difficult years, it stabiized but sometimes after 6 months ok i get 2 konths of these lingering symptoms, which are tinnitus, nausea, some small headaches, sometimes its like behind the eyes, and compromised balance, like im wobbly. I have been to so many doctors, no one can solve this, im coming to the conclusion it could be atlas related? Cervical? My health is perfect but i cant ger rid if this. Getting deperate.
I have two questions: 1. How is it possible for someone who's have been working out for almost all his life to have weak deep muscles? 2. What if one of our neck vertebrae is slightly out of alignment? Is that even possible? If so, are these exercises making sense in this situation?
Question 1: Reflex inhibition - neck pain quickly causes atrophy of back and neck muscles, sometimes as fast as 48 hrs after the onset of pain. Question 2: Poor neuromuscular control brought on by reflex inhibition causes vertebral impingement (pinched joints) that leads to more pain which causes more reflex inhibition. More over, if someone lays down frequently for relief, this can also cause poor muscle control. Hope that helps and thanks for the great questions.
Thank you for the exercise suggestions. I really like how you demonstrate what to do and what not to do in order to do the movement correctly. I was also wondering if you could please do a video on Cervical Kyphosis and how to restore the curve. I suppose I have very week deep cervical muscles as well as exterior muscles. Also, I'm sure this is all linked together but the neck muscles that wrap in font and behind the ear are causing me "TMJ" discomfort. I can eat and talk etc. without pain but rather I feel a constant dull ache and uncomfortable pulling sensation. My mouth does not track symmetrically. It swings from the side that is in discomfort towards the side that feels normal when my mouth is open wide. Perhaps that is a separate video suggestion. I'm falling apart Dr. Burnette. Look forward to hearing from you. Take Care, Kate
I have a lot of neck problems, dizziness and headaches. These are the first exercises that I was able to do without feeling even more dizzy afterwards. I know many patients ask you how long it takes for neck muscles to get stronger. I do the first two exercises several times a day. And put a small sand bag on my head and walk around in my house. I know it's a stupid question. Does it takes weeks or months. Stretching exercises is the worst thing I have ever done!!!!!!
Agreed!!!! Hope this truth does get louder. People are getting worse with stretching! And people are creating Cervical Instability. It's more than disc pathology, it's messing up mechano & proprioception. You hit everything greatly.
@vincentvega3747 yes, stretching a tense muscle on an Instable joint, only pulls the joint. Stretching only helps with a post workout, not in a spasm or adhesion. PT stretches kept making me worse and worse, and finally destroyed all my ability to function normal
@vincentvega3747 A bit, but damage was furthered by the PT stretching on a torn ligament. With PRP injections it went away a lot, but my issue is also anterior skull/neck

How would my muscles get weak ? I’ve work hard jobs lifting a lot of moving. Like any muscle my neck got plenty of exercise. So with your idea of weak muscles doesn’t really make sense in my case. I know some friends who had sedentary life and job and they don’t have neck problems. I do like your exercises and will do them just the same
Neck pain can inhibit the nerve's ability to stimulate the muscles and cause rapid atrophy. Low weightbearing like sitting for long periods of time will also weaken the deep muscle of the neck over time. Hope that helps.
It works better instead of stretching. After I stretch my neck muscle the symptoms getting worse. Try to stabilize your neck is a better way to get rid of neck pain
I tried these exercises and they felt really good. I did have two questions. Does cervicogenic dizziness include light headedness? I sometimes feel light headed when I walk up stairs. Also your technique of not stretching the neck is a minority viewpoint among the presenters on youtube. Can you talk more about this?
Great questions and thanks for commenting. Cervicogenic headaches are a common side effect seen with dizziness. They are treated with the same exercise program. Stretching is still very common but very outdated. There has never been a good research study that stretching gave long term relief for cervicogenic dizziness or headaches.
Nice video. But the problem, like every other similar videos. Is that it is aimed at people with severe problems. I have neck issues, but i dont feel a thing when i do this. Is feeling VERY tired also part of Cervicogenic Dizziness? Also i have a very bad recovery, even after a light session at the gym (soreness ,fatigue etc...) All this started after 6 months of a bad posture in front of the computer 10 hours a day while being SUPER stressed (during this period i always had my neck bent backwards and I was very tense in front of the computer almost every day). All this also create anxiety and panic attack during the pic of my cervicogenic Dizziness .Thanks in advance for any help!
Tired is a common complaint that I hear from my patients. Best of luck with the exercises.

Thanks for the nice comment. Best of luck!
Yes! I was told to stretch and it just makes the symptoms worse. My physio acknowledges this. It doesn’t really have an alternative. I’m so glad to see someone finally addressing this. Thank you! Will this exercise build up strength to help prevent symptoms in future?
Yes, these exercises should help to decrease current and future neck pain. Thanks for watching!

Would this potentially help with eye strain, light sensitivity, blurriness in addition to headaches? All these symptoms seem to be coming from my neck, but unsure why (when I move my head to the right the left side of my neck cracks and sometimes will relieve the headache and eye blurriness - but temporarily)
did u find any help for eye strain, light sensitivity and bluriness, i am experiencing these too.kindly help
@@majidahmad4783 Not really - but i do feel like a lot of these issues at least for me are due to really tight & weak neck/shoulder muscles. Since i find my symptoms are a bit better when my posture is not forward head/hunched over. I also saw a TMJ specialist who also specializes in upper cervical and he did a comprehensive overview with pictures of my posture and pressing on certain neck/face muscles - he thinks i have an atlas misalignment in my neck but need to get further xrays to confirm.

Is anybody struggling with shortness of breath and dysphagia as well? I heard a snap in my neck one day while I was doing some dumbbell rows and didn't think much of it. A couple days later, my neck was flush and my breathing depth changed. Started feeling fatigue and dizziness, we well as general instability.
I haven't been able to get an MRI or CT scan, but it feels like a stabilizer muscle from the back to the shoulder to the neck has atrophied or "detached."
There was no pain when I heard the snap, but the neck has felt weak and misaligned since.
You need to see a DOCTOR ASAP.
Thank you for this video. I had a couple of head injuries that led to cervical instability many years ago. Got it treated and well in hand but it has resurged recently. Had a bad episode of dizziness, jaw tightness, tingling, headache, all of it this weekend and again a bit today. Doesn't help that I'm big and strong and have an 18-in neck. Do you recommend chiropractic treatment? I don't enjoy the neck adjustments and wonder if they do more harm than good?
Research on Chiropractic care shows short term relief only. My programs are 10% mobilization of the neck and 90% exercise to improve the stability of the cervical spine. The research is strong on this approach and has been shown to have long term relief.
Thank you! I have neck clicking and dull headaches that come and go every day for the past year. Any other help is much appreciated.

Hope the info helped and thanks for watching.
Great video, good explanation and very good exercises! Thank you very much. Just want to add that the tightness of the muscles in the neck are not only a symptom. The autonomous nerve system is actually just doing its job as it tries to stabilize the instability of the cervical spine by making the muscles tight. I developed cervical issues two years ago and stretching always felt wrong and uncomfortably, despite there are so many videos out there telling you to stretch....

what are your thoughts on the iron neck? Do you utilize this in your program? What about working with an upper cervical chiropractor? Thanks

Would wearing a soft neck collar while doing these excersises be a good idea?
Are deep stabilizers same as ligaments? And if ligaments are weakened, can PT still work?
Deep stabilizers are the deep muscles of the neck that connect directly onto the neck bones.
3rd exercise makes impact... does it makes the difference how we pull the arm back?
Btw from my experience it's important to shift your centre of gravity back - that will relieve your neck from tension
Keep it light and pain free. Thanks for watching.
Can this be realistically be treated without PRP or surgury?
Yes, strong research efficacy for specific physical therapy. I have treated thousands successfully in my career.
I am unable to lay on my sides; is there an alternative to the 3rd exercise?
Yes, scapula retractions can be performed seated. Light effort, 5-10 sec holds. Pain free only!
Do you do the 3rd exercise (pulling your arm back) on both arms or does it not matter and just use the same arm each time?
Usually one arm at a time. Hope that helps.
Will this help for vertigo also
If the vertigo is related to the neck disorder it should help.
Thanks for commenting!

Can cervogenic headache be vaused by neck, occular, and upper back pain? And can all that cause vertigo, mimicking bppv? Or is there no way any of that can mimic bppv?
Cervicogenic dizziness looks very similar to BPPV and this makes correctly diagnosing the disorder very challenging.
Will these exercises help reduce the headaches I get when sleeping? I almost always get mine when sleeping and have tried massage to no avail.
If the exercises are related to neck pain they should help. Best of luck!
I am so confused! What about your own recommendation to do the stretches using the towel?
Thank you! :)
Sleeping on your back or side could be fine if you have the right size pillow. Neutral spine alignment is what would be optimal. I have a video coming out in a couple of days where I address sleeping postures. Best of luck!
Mi problem is that i cant look down, like the second exercise, and i got vertigo because of that, how can i fix this? My c3 and c 4 are degenerated and my c5c6 have mild stenosis and 1 and 2 mm bulging and a osteophyte
May Allah bless u good health
The standing counter leaning tilt made me dizzy but the relief was worth it
I always coach to keep the exercises symptom free for the best results. Best of luck!
Thanks for watching!
can you do the last one standing?
You could try in standing or in seated. What ever feels the best. Great question.
Hope some of the exercises on this channel help you out. Best of luck.
I have two questions:
@@physiotipswithmarrow5836 thank you for taking the time. It's interesting.
The final step worst 😆right side should avoid
Did you have this, found that stretching made you dizzy and strengthening made the dizziness go away?
@vincentvega3747 yes, stretching a tense muscle on an Instable joint, only pulls the joint. Stretching only helps with a post workout, not in a spasm or adhesion.
PT stretches kept making me worse and worse, and finally destroyed all my ability to function normal
@RobertLongM Just to clarify did your dizziness go away after you stopped stretching and you strengthen your deep cervical muscles?
@vincentvega3747 A bit, but damage was furthered by the PT stretching on a torn ligament.
With PRP injections it went away a lot, but my issue is also anterior skull/neck
I think I have CCI and been having neck pain, anxiety, vision problem and the pressure you mention behind the eyes. Do you think it’s possible to recover from it without prolotherpy injections by just doing strengthening exercises?

I have also a light tenonditis on my right shoulder from boxing 15years and having done 3massages in my life. And when i do the exercises in the video, i dont feel anything. We need a little harder exercises to PREVENT needing to go to a doctor or destroying ourselves.
