  • Former Navy Seal, Geoff Reeves, is back in town with another Experts React episode. He's here to react to three battles from "ARMA 3." He'll analyze and compare the tactics and communications of the players, their positioning, weapons, night googles and even parachutes. Listen to what he has to say and find out whether he thinks these battles are close to reality or not!

ARMA 3 is an open-world, realism-based, military tactical shooter video game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive exclusively through the Steam distribution platform. It was released for Microsoft Windows in September 2013, and later announced for macOS and Linux in August 2015.
ARMA 3 mainly takes place in the mid-2030s, on the fictional islands of Altis and Stratis in the Aegean Sea, and the South Pacific island of Tanoa, as well as the island of Malden and a landlocked terrain set in the historical region of Livonia. The islands feature photo-realistic terrain and water environments. Altis is the largest official terrain in the ARMA series with ground area covering approximately 270 square kilometres (100 sq mi). The smaller island, Stratis, expands over an area of 20 square kilometres (7.7 sq mi).

Part of an Arma Unit myself. It's great fun and a lot of the things that Reeves really likes actually aren't native to the game. The medical system is likely the ACE mod which my unit also uses. The radio chatter was probably TFAR radio which also does a great job of adding to immersion. Fantastic Game with a Fantastic expert to review it.

They will give you a list of mods they use. my personal favorite thing about the game is the the downtime between firefights where you just talk shit with the bois. although you can play SP with mods, usually people mess around with the 3d editor for sp with the mods because the campaign is more or less just a tutorial. The version of Arma they use does account for barrel temperature, so it's common for ARs or their assistants to carry spares. With the SAW it takes quite a few rounds to do permanent damage, like 70+ uninterrupted if I'm remembering correctly? Before that cyclic rate slowdown does become a concern
Every element you hear on comms in these are other players. Any confusion, surprise, or fog of war comes from real player planning and communications falling through. I hope we can watch one with a briefing sometime so you can see what kinds of factors we take into account during that phase of the mission

Yes, direct impingement is inherently more accurate than long stroke, but that shot was 200m-300m. I've hit targets at that range with the heavier 7.62x39 with an AKM. I have 700 hours on Arma 3. And I tried all other games, I tried Squad and Hell Let Loose and these two has very toxic community (even though the game is great.) But Arma everyone work as a team, you have much more missions together, enemies are savvy, I love it.
*I remember once, we had a team of 100 on a road into a open field and we spread 50 left and 50 right. I support them with .50 Cal to help my team across the other side of the field while a friendly sniper was helping to the right.
*The enemy hid behind tall grass to the far end of the horizon all the freaking time.
Later on, I made friends, and we sticked together as a team, we didn't know where the enemy was, so we decided to hide inside a tower which had all directions, me and the buddy next to me changed to snipers. We were pinned down but together to the end.
That is the thing with Arma 3, when things work, the fight feels epic!!

Until Arma 4 comes out on the new infusion engine they are working on, I find that arma 3 is quite clunky especially when you don't have a very high-end rig. So I think you should check out Squad especially after its new update with muzzle flashes and the lighting overall.

AKs are known to lose accuracy at distance, but the distance shown in the video wasn't that great (100-200 meters), but what AKs are known for is their low recoil thanks to the short cartridges that they fire, so at that range being that accurate while shooting full auto in a braced position (ArmA 3 simulates bracing your weapon on nearby structures) is perfectly plausible.

Its a bit of a combination of players and the game developers meeting at a single point and agreeing on it. Pure absolute realism and immersion to the point of squads actually making propaganda videos for themselves and recruiting people and training people. Both game devs and players are huge army geeks basically. And devs of arma also makes US military training sims so yeah.

Edit: Nope, these guys are using ACE medical. Maybe they're tuning ACE down?
I assume with the overly accurate AK, the NVGs used with any optics, and the lack of recoil shown that they're running mostly stock Arma 3, which mostly sucks outside of the helos and little multiplayer Warlords to wet your whistle until you start getting deep into ACE and a ton of added mods. I'm running like 160 at the same time right now. It's a hassle, but it becomes worth it... well, as much as a mil sim or game could be considered, I guess. RH pistols pack ACE compat, NiArms ACE compat, Optre ACE compat, and Project infinite All in One just to get accurate ballistics ammo. Use the Dagger weapons pbo all by itself. The rest of your ammo will be ACE mod itself. Legit ballistics, blast, and frag modeling. Accidentally take out a civilian, and either your missing is called off or you end up with more enemies. Add to that Reshade and tweaking all your settings, including the mods' settings, and it becomes like no other shooter out there. Stock it has issues, though, other than the neat Warlords official multiplayer servers (at least for a while until it soon gets boring) and a killer licensed, imported helicopter advanced flight model from Germany with optional auto trim real fly-by-wire mode ala Comanche-style. By the last, I mean the Arma 3 AFM auto trim is not a pretend mode mimicking FBW, but a real intermediary layered between the flight dynamics model and your controllers.
You're probably better off spending a thousand hours learning French, or something, though. You will get sucked in. They didn't call the old Arma mods server "Armaholic" for nothing.

There is a lot in Arma people don’t know (With mods). Its supposed to represent war, but at a realistic touch. In which realism is limited, but can represent greater situations and battles. Mods just improve the game much more better. Sight alignment, stamina, radios/radio towers(Jams comms), coordination, armament, weight, night vision, Anti-tank usage(AT), Anti-air usage(AA), heavy machine guns(HMGs), Mine-resistant armor protected vehicles(MRAPs), Armor(Tanks and other heavy vics), Close air support helos(CAS), CAS jets and planes, Partial Navy vehicles(Arma doesn’t have support for larger or supporting boats and shops), Artillery, Mines, Drones, and a lot more are in the game that depict larger scales of modern warfare(Not COD).

@@therealone9584 i would have to ask my PC buddy who plays. I've just looked into some of it to decide on my next laptop purchase. I just know some of the sounds, graphics, weapons, and vehicles are mostly free. Its a nice touch that people can make the game better for everyone free, which makes it debatable if allowing mods free has delayed Arma 4, or made a great game last longer because it is a smaller company. Definitely a learning curve regardless and learning to enjoy the slower parts. I try picking it up at my buddies but the game length makes sharing difficult. Watching can be slow and the action can cease quickly (easy to die regardless of armor wounds don't just bounce back like COD) Not a game that run and gun works well at all which is why I like the idea but as q PS4 owner and someone that would need a gaming PC I can't quite justify at the moment.
