Dolphins are actually a whale species. They belong to the group with teeth. Just like Orca's do. You probably saw some species of dolphin.
The species you think of, when thinking of a whale, belong to the Baleen whale group. Like the Humpback whale for example.
Still very cool to see, but people need to manage their expectations on this type of trips. Just like you said, enjoy the boat ride, and when you do see whales, it's a bonus.
