Thanks Shane! Yeah, it’s something we thought might be useful in a mini-painters arsenal. It’s particularly useful for planning our terrain layout you intend on keeping in position for a while (if you need to consider the light source).
@@RealmSmith It was awesome to see the technique in detail. Maybe ppl should see it as an option or another tool in their toolbox vs being a hater and bash. Personally, I’m going to pick up more colored inks for my set. I have a few, but it is awesome to see a full range of prepared color inks. Been a Vallejo fan for years paining military models. These inks are awesome for painting D&D Miniatures. Thanks for the video.
Well I finished mine! I decided not to do the lighting effects. But I did pretty much everything else and it came wonderful! The plastic eye piece was a pain. It got all scuffed up trying to get it in. I ended up having to go over it with clear nail polish to fix it but it looks good now. Great tutorial! One thing I would like to see is a guide to colors. For instance if I wanted to make my beholder blue instead of brown, how would I choose the highlight colors to compliment it? That kind of thing. Keep the videos coming!
A little late of a reply but I would look into getting a color wheel. They have ones that you turn to the color you have and it shows you the various different way to compliment the color, and there are many.
They are a few bucks off amazon, but really help teach you color theory and help inspire you to come up with your own color palettes for mini painting.
I thought your painting was lovely! Great Job! I would love for you to give us an extra moment to look at the paint job at the end of the video. I feel like I didn't get a great look at the final product. Thanks for making this series!

Would love to paint one of these! Do you happen to know if there is a set of Vallejo paints that would include most of the ones you used in this tutorial? That way I can just grab that one plus any ones left over.
I don't understand why people always do OSL on well painted (or in this case amazingly well painted) minis... I've never seen OSL that looks good. It's only designed to work in a single specific setting from a single specific angle and even then doesn't quite look right.
I've seen some good OSL effects (check out the ppl who paint Dark Sword minis for the website) but it's really hard to pull off without wrecking the otherwise fine paint job.
The problem with OSL is that lighting conditions change while the paint doesn't. Even if you add an orange light and a blue light... those colors are still off. Great job WizKids. You suck at everything.
Yeah, he ruined near perfection with that stupid shit. If you want lighting effects, do a build with Dwarven Forge or custom terrain and place some actual lighting. Put the beholder down and bam, that beautiful paint job will interact with the lighting effects. No reason to paint them on and ruin the mini.
It works if there is a lightsource on the mini like a torch or a spell effect
I think the OSL was done really well. It adds atmosphere to the mini. Love the drool too. Well done!

Any help on the eye cover piece, mine is a foggy plastic? Do you sand it a bit or what?
You can use a few things: Nail Polish (probably the fastest and easiest) or a thin coat of clear epoxy resin, I'm sure there's other ways. And you could always Test Which is better (nail polish or epoxy) on the spell effect eye-stalks, assuming you wont be using them.
Mine cover piece was a little foggy too. The problem was that it didn't fit well. I could see the lens sticking out of the lids instead of going deep and touching the surface if the eye. It was too big on left and right sides.
1) I didn't glued the lense, so I pulled it off by applying a needle to the corner of the eye.
2) I used file to sand off left and right sides a bit. I tried to keep the shape of each edge.
3) Just like RealmSmith, I painted black the rim of the lens. I ended up using black marker since it doesn't add the bulk and dries faster.
4) I inserted the lens again to see how it fits now. I repeated the process a few times.
The black edge helped to see if some spot was missed while filing off. When left and right sides was sewn off evenly, I restored the black cover.
In my opinion the only way lens can give a clear, transparent look is by touching the whole surface of the eye as firm as possible by lens' inner side. I think (didn't checked it) that the black rim is also an improvement, and the lens itself must be smooth and clean. I didn't sanded it because it would take a lot of effort to polish it again perfectly.
where does one get those clear eye lens's?

Not a fan of that moonlight thing you did on the back. The slime on the teeth is genius though.
My lens is foggy. Any tips for that?
littlehedonist I would suggest maybe try some gloss varnish and brush it on.

It looked fucking amazing up to the point where you added the light source... don't do that man, all the hard workyou put in got rekt.
Like your really good. But you consistantly paint over very good details that you spend a lot of time on. To each there own but it made me sad when you added the "moonlight"
Horrible waste of paint... T_T
