Paints used:
Deck Tan (VMC)
Stormhost Silver
Ceramite White
German Uniform (VMC)
German Grey (VMC)
Leadbelcher
Nuln Oil
Black (VMC)
Typhus Corrosion
Rhinox Hide
Athonian Camoshade
Agrax Earthshade
Red Rust (Secret Weapon)
Orange Rust (Secret Weapon)
The Secret Weapon paints can be bought here with international shipping: goo.gl/4gkcxL
Also:
Brown Earth basing paste (Vallejo)
Testors Dullcote matte varnish
Fine Leaf Foliage by Woodland Scenics (Olive)
Javis Fine Turf (mostly the Mid Green colour, but also some of the Dark and the Light)
For an alternative to using the Secret Weapon rust paints, here's how you can mix something very close with Citadel colours: For Orange Rust you can use Skrag Brown mixed with a little Yriel Yellow, and for Red Rust you can use Rhinox Hide - either on its own or for a really close match you can mix in a little Wild Rider Red.
Bruses used for this video: Rosemary & Co Series 33 Size 2, and Series 56 Size 6.
Any palette will do but this is the main palette that I use: amzn.to/2wre2TS

I started watching this series not because I like star wars but because I wondered if I might learn something from it. Not only am I learning, but I'm hooked and can't wait for the next episodes. I also want to go out and buy these figs to paint. You have cost me a lot of money :)
Ha ha - thank you! Please apologise to your bank account on my behalf :)
There are so many different things on this video! Like, neat paint, the sponge, the Qtip... amazing work 😊
Thank you so much! I'm glad you found the video useful 😀
Very nice video! The Bob Ross of tabletop! :D
Thank you Olle! :D
Hahahahaha
I'm glad you mentioned how easy it is to knock over those tall shade bottles. I have done that an embarrassing number of times.
Doh! Happens to the best of us 😀
I was working my way through the Zombicide: Black Plague tutorials, when the OSL from the lightsaber in the Luke Skywalker thumbnail dragged me away to this series. I am thoroughly enjoying the quality and effort that goes into your work and into your videos. I’m finding it very inspiring. Even minor production details, like the model going through the painting stages as you list the steps at the beginning of the video, that must take a lot of planning and work for a sequence that is only a few seconds long, and would be so easy to miss, but it adds real depth to the package. You have a very clear and coherent vision of how you want everything to look, both on the table, and on the tablet. Brilliant! And I haven’t even mentioned the music. It is without doubt the subtlest blending of visual and audio I have yet found on UA-cam, rather like your layering. I can hear riffs from the movie soundtracks in there, but they aren’t rip-offs, more stepping-off points that capture the atmosphere of the franchise. I was sure, after watching the first Luke tutorial, that you would recycle the same music for each subsequent video, but I believe each has been different. I could be wrong, my ear-drums are made of leather, but if I’m correct, then that implies a crazy level of dedication. Again, brilliant! And thank you.
Thank you so much Peter! I really appreciate your taking the time to provide such kind and thorough feedback! Although I do actually recycle a fair bit of the music - once I've got enough for any given series - I still like to write something new for most episodes, depending on the mini.. :)
Your videos are amazing and quite inspiring. After watching this video a few times I purchased this kit online and built it while following this tutorial. While it didn't come out as spectacular as yours, I am quite happy with it. Thank You for taking the time and effort to make these videos. They are very much appreciated.
Thanks a lot Jeffery! I really appreciate that :)
Been here sins about halfway through imperial assault and I am so glad that you are painting these.
Thanks Pixel! I'm glad you're enjoying the Legion stuff :)
That chipping and rust is super-nice. Very well done.
Thank you sir! :)
Yessssss, this series is incredible. So happy we're getting more.
Thank you Ben! I had a real blast working on this one in particular :)
Sorastro's Painting it shows! Just finished watching through the video. Such superb work.
Thanks so much :)
I love the chipped paint effects. Great idea with the sponge. I will add it to my arsenal of techniques. thanks again for another amazing video!
Thank you! The sponge trick is quite an old and well-established one, but it's so fun and effective to do :)
One thing I really like about your videos is your brush work. You touch on it in a different video, but painting toward the lightest spot has helped me immensely with highlighting.
Oh good - thanks mate! 😀
I have to say I have watched every video on your channel. I have found them so useful when painting, not only as guides but the techniques you use have helped me with so many minis. There is so much to learn and perfect but I have to say I appreciate your videos as they make it look so simple and makes me feel less over whelmed with planning when painting a model. The Black Plague tutorials have been so useful for painting zombies. Please continue making these videos they have made me far better painter. Anytime anyone asks me how I’ve done something I just tell them to watch sorastro. Most of my techniques have been adapted from these tutorials! Thank you so so much!
Thank you so much Charlie! I really appreciate that, and I'm happy that the videos have helped with your painting 😀
Honestly I can’t tell you how much you have helped. I am tomorrow going to rewatch one of your blood rage videos to remember how you made a fiery blade and try to adapt that to a blue scheme for doing the weapons of a Reaper Frost giant (I don’t believe you’ve done a video for anything like this yet). Thanks
Nice! No, I haven't done blue flames in a video yet, although I did a blue swirly spell for the spellweaver from Gloomhaven: m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2149338028434019&id=941329685901532 😀
Oh wow that’s exactly the type of thing I’m looking to do. Amazing thank you
No problem! If memory serves me I used white, blended into Lothern Blue, then Calgar Blue 😀
The weathering is incredible. I love it.
Thanks mate! :D
Currenly playing Imperial Assault with my son listenimg to Starborn. So so good.
That makes me very happy :)
A very cool model. Your weathering is a masterpiece. The base looks really realistic. Pls more. The thumbs are up 👍😉
Thanks a lot John! I’m glad you enjoyed the weathering :)
Only found your channel maybe 3-4 weeks ago, but you've given me some good inspiration and since I've binge-watched nearly all of your video's in a couple of weeks I've learned a lot of new tips and techniques which I've previously given up on attempting, or were too worried about trying in-case I totally ruined a mini ... I bought some rosemary and co brushes as suggested in one of your videos, and even though I still love my GW and kolinsky brushes, I'm really impressed with the rosemary ones ... Love your videos, and thanks for giving me the motivation to get back to it :D ...
Thanks a lot Carl! I really appreciate that and I'm happy to hear you're getting back into it :)
The Master has done it again! Well done good sir.
Thank you Saemonnosuke! You're too kind :)
As always, pleasure to watch. Each time I pick something new and interesting to try out myself, thanks, man)
Thanks a lot Дарт! I'm very happy to hear that :)
I'm loving this frequency, man. Keep 'em coming!
Ha ha - I'll do my best but I do have some IA to tend to before I move onto the Empire minis.. :)
Ah! Poster putty for the weapons! Genius! As I had already constructed the models before deciding that I was going to magnetize the weapons, this is going to save me a ton of headache!
Nice video. Loved the chipped paint method.
Thanks Ethan! I'm glad you liked it :)
Great paint job, great narration, easy sub -- also I've been looking for foliage that meets all my various criteria for weeks and I can't believe I hadn't seen the Woodland Scenics Fine Leaf Foliage, it's perfect! So I doubly thank you, both for the content and for solving my predicament lol
Thank you so much! I'm very happy to hear that 😁
I've loved this series of tutorials so far, being all honest it's incredible how such a single change on the layers of dark or bright can make something so metallic looking.
Thanks to these tutorials I've managed to do quite the amount of stuff with the Legions basic figures, and I mean... It's WAY better having a shaded Chiss than some plain tune blue, my Rebel alien strike team looks way better now.
Thank you! I'm very happy to hear your Rebels are turning out well :)
Amazing stuff as always. The rust effects were particularly interesting to me. Thank you for another great video!
Thanks Dorn! I'm glad you enjoyed the rust :)
I know this is an awesome Video, even before watching. I realy love, when you go into detail. Keep doing such good painting guides!
Such trust! Thank you Flux :)
Two Questions:
1. How long did it take you to make this tutorial? (Not only painting, also editing and stuff)
2. do you know when you are ready to publish the next guide? I'm so hyped. :)
Hi Flux! This video probably took me around 50 hours or so to produce (including prep, shooting, narrating, editing, composing music etc). The next guide won't be ready for another few weeks :)
Sorastro's Painting
50 hours is a lot of time!
Thank you so much for your hard and long work! I hope you still have fun making this videos:)
good work of painting and wear of the vehicle's armor
Thanks Victor! :)
When I saw the result of the brown paint you used for the rust, I was thinking it was a bad choice... Then you added the orange paint and the glaze, and gosh, it looks absolutely amazing! I'm sorry for doubting you, oh mighty Sorastro! :(
+MonsieurMammouth Ha ha! Thank you - all is forgiven :)
Love the paint chips and rust effects
Some great weathering techniques to try thank you.
Thank you! They're a lot of fun :)
The music in all of these Star Wars videos are awesome! Great mood music! Like an anxious scene in an 80’s action movie.
Thanks a lot Philippe! I really appreciate that. I'll be including the music on a new album later this year... :)
Some of your compositions really remind me of Alan Silvestris stuff. Absolutely awesome!
Thanks Sean! That’s high praise indeed - much appreciated! :)
Very nice. Some really smart effects used on this one. Your Bases are top shelf! gg
Thanks a lot Todd! I've really been enjoying the basing process lately :)
Common! Cant wait for the empire! Its gonna be so good
Ha ha - no pressure then? :)
Amazing. Please tell me the Empire tutorials are coming soon!
Thanks Rocco! I'll be starting on the Empire figures very soon :)
These are very cool! I love Star Wars!
Thank you! You and me both :)
Wonderful job as always! A true artist.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it :)
This is definitely going to help me with my Legion minis, thank you!
You're welcome Lord Jack! :)
Keep up the good work, love you star wars tutorials
Thank you! I'll keep doing my best :)
Helped me alot to paint my own Imperial assault models
That’s just amazing Maestro.
Thanks buddy! I'm really glad you liked it :)
Starting painting mine today :) cant wait to test some of the stuffs here
Awesome Kai! I hope it turns out well and that you have fun with it! :)
Thanks mate i will do my best, but it will be not near you amazing Miniature, i had bee pretty good painter , but i stopped painting miniatures for almost 10 yeas and iam actuall started painting again cause of legion and your Videos...hope i catch up on the years off soon(ish)
btw got my Hands on Han Solo for legion today ;)
Kai Klomann Ah I’m sure it will come back to you in no time. I also just got my Han Solo earlier this week too! Looking forward to making a video for him :)
Honestly, my favorite UA-cam painter. Just love your style. Wish I had the patience to use my brush more and airbrush less :/
Thank you Zee! I really appreciate that :)
No problem. Feel like a lot of people are moving to airbrush heavy commission style, and watching you wet blend your highlights with brush and such is just amazingly zen, haha.
Sorastro's video production is faster than the Millenium Falcon =D
Ha ha.. believe be there was nothing fast about how long this video took to make :)
You - as any good artist - make it look so easy and effortless. But everyone who ever tried to make videos of any kind knows how much work you are putting in these. Awesome as always!
I have no idea how you painted all of this in sub-assemblies and then all of it glued together perfectly. I have been dry-fitting these legs and feet for multiple days now and it never comes out correctly. The real video you should make is how you managed to accomplish that. :P Great painting video, regardless! You're a legend.
Ha ha, thanks Tyler 😁
Great video, and timelessly useful!
Thank you sir! I really appreciate that 😀
@@Sorastro coincidentally, I also emailed you about commission work but haven't heard back. Maybe it hit your spam? Email subject: Painting on UA-cam
Ah, sorry - I've been dealing with a bit of a difficult family situation, so I've been a bit slack with keeping on top of my emails! Sorry about that, but the quick answer is that I don't really do commission painting (largely due to lack of time!). 🙂
@@Sorastro I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties and hope things clear up soon. I'll keep consuming your Legion videos!
I think it would be cool to see a video of your work space. Have you considered doing a short video like that? I'd be interested to see your paint storage solutions and that kind of boring stuff. :)
Hi John-Paul! I'll see if I can find time to film a quick studio tour one day :)
Not sure if you will see this or not. I started watching your videos during the imperial assault series. My buddy had purchased the game and started painting. I have pre ordered Star Wars Legion and am nervous and excited about painting. Any tips that you could send my way? I can't afford to buy the entire citadel line so I will most likely have to create colors, but that's ok. Thanks in advance should you reply. Thank you for the many hours you dedicate to make these videos
Hi David! I've tried to include all the most important tips for approaching the Legion minis in the videos; if there's anything specific you're not sure about then let me know and I'd be happy to help! :)
Another gread video, looking forward to seeing the Empire figures as that will be my main faction :)
Thanks Rynot! Stormtroopers will be incoming in a while.. :)
finally getting to this chic.. i dont like the pose.. and even if i did, i like the sense of weight.. so im doing what i did (although it came in more peices) with the AT-ST; cutting the hip joints down some, tilting the legs, cutting the ankle joints for the same thing, and even the "barrel" (that holds each leg) and tilting it as well. The end product has the longer leg (left) of the AT-RT acting as the dominant leg being stood on.. and the shorter leg (right), being that its curled, made to look as if its being lifted up, with its respective foot being dangled a bit.. Whats cool is, you could go for the opposite, and have the legs tilted outward - in a more planted look (kind of like when its turning in battlefront 2 :)
I guess im going for a movie look, although ill have to re-watch the AT-RT scene again.. but whatever the case, i love dramatic poses ;)
Fantastic, great work!
Thank you Scuba Steve! I'm glad you liked it :)
Awesome job on these, although im going to use Empire army it is pleasure to watch you working on rebel filths. Also i have checked your other tuts and i have to say your vids are very helpful - especially one about Vader because black is so tricky to highlight if you dont have the right idea on how to do it in your mind.
Thank you! I'll be working on the forces of the Empire very soon.. :)
Really looking forward to the Empire paint guides! Will they come any time soon?! Just over a litle month and I get to paint my own. Much needed advice is very welcome ;)
Thanks Kelvin! I'm hoping to be able to release the next couple of videos very soon; they just need to go through an approval process first that is beyond my control :)
Outstanding. Love these videos!
Thanks a lot Mortis! I'm glad you like it :)
A masterpiece! Thank you.
Thank you Jason! I'm pleased you like it :)
Another video already? Awesome!
Yes! I finished them both some time ago but there was a hold up beyond my control that meant I had to sit on them :)
Oh FFG had an embargo until a date? Does this mean SW:L will be releasing soon if they lifted the embargo on your videos?
Hi! No - FFG don't mind when I release them; I believe the hold up was with LFL who needed to check the videos for licensing reasons (and they've been pretty busy lately as you might imagine!) :)
As usual, great vid... I wish you would paint the rest of the monsters in Blood rage, though. Such, a shame not having finished the set of monsters...
Hi Andre! Feat not - Blood Rage is on my "to finish" list :)
Yey!!! I can't wait!
+Andre Souza :D
nice work man! congratulations for all your videos. Two questions :
-Can you say me an online store where i can find your brushes?
-Will you upload the empire troops painting guide (vader, stormies and speeders)?
Thanks Christian! Here’s where I buy my Rosemary & Co brushes (they do ship internationally): www.rosemaryandco.com/watercolour-brushes/pure-kolinsky-sable/pure-kolinsky-pointed?filter_name=Series%2033 I also sometimes use Windsor & Newton but I buy them from a local art shop. Yes I will be covering the Empire models very soon! :)
As always - BRILLIANT! I don't know what I'm more excited about - playing or painting! I had a few quick questions; you varnashed after the base materials, does that create any problems? I would think it would plastic coat the grass, thus sealing it - but is it less natural looking?
And what glue are you using (putting model together)? I can't find a good brush on glue round here...
Again, thanks for all that you do! Can't wait to see you hit the other vehicles!!!
Thanks a lot Mike! Using the Dullcote after the base didn't cause any problems for me. The glue I used was a superglue by Loctite but I think any superglue would be fine :)
This looks awesome. Just finished painting the imperial assault Rancor following your tutorial. It looks great! Quick question, what do you use for the forest litter/ logs? Is it a product or just off the ground?!
Thanks Brooke! In this instance the litter really was mostly just twigs etc that I collected off the floor of the local forest :)
Probably the best painting guide around. Amazing. Will you be doing one for Darth Vader and the AT-ST in the Legion range?
Thank you Dale! Yes, I'm currently working on the Vader and AT-ST videos :)
Sorastro's Painting that's great news... I shall eagerly await :) keep it up!
Thanks Dale! I'll keep doing my best :)
These Sir are amazing! I've been watching your channel since you started doing the Imperial Assault minis, and I must say you really make me want to start painting again. I must ask though, since I haven't painted mini's in at least 15 years, and all my current paint pots are dried out. What would you recommend to the first time buyer, or someone getting back into the hobby to start out with?
Paints have changed quite a bit in the last 15-20 years, and while it may sound like a good deal to go grab the Games-Workshop ultra paint bundle. It's rather hard to justify dropping $300 on paints right out of the gate.
So, is there a set or colors you'd recommend to start with as a base to build on?
Thanks again for making these videos! Keep up the great work Sir!
Thank you Kevin! I usually suggest that people entering or re-entering the hobby just buy the individual paints required for a specific model or unit, then gradually expand your paint collection over time. So the real question is - what do you want to paint first? :)
Oi! Good call with the sponge and the weathering technique! Were the logs and sticks at the end purchased or salvaged in the yard?
Hi! Yes they were mostly salvaged from a nearby forest :)
Do you think you'll ever go over paint tutorials for Zombicide's season characters? Really liked how you did the colors for both the zombies in the original and black plague Zombicide games. Fantastic job, and now may even consider mini figure painting as well.
Hi there! For Zombicide I may well be covering some of the Black Plague expansions at some point, and possibly some Green Horde :)
Awesome, if those vids ever do come to fruition I'll be looking forward to em :] keep up the awesome paint jobs!
Thanks man! :)
Great video! What are the lines on the base used for? Firing arcs?? Also, have you considered trying to magnetize the swappable gun?
Thanks Brian! Yes they are firing arcs :) And yes, I though about magnetising the guns but decided to keep things nice and simple (yet effective) with some good old poster putty instead. I'm sure all the modders will get to adding magnets in no time :)
very nice.
Have you considered magnetising the weapons? Poster putty works fine too. You put a lot of effort into making the textured groundwork and then covered it with the flock. You could have gotten away with just some sand.
You also could have given the logs more of a sense of weight by pressing them into the textured paste rather than having them sitting on top once it had dried.
I worry about how long the trees will last on a wargame model. they look great but also very fragile. but then if they snap off, having the model walking through some severed trunks and fallen trees would look equally cool.
I am enjoying this series, its a shame they made the models in 35mm rather than compatible with Imperial Assault.
Thanks John! Yes I considered using magnets but chose to keep things simple (yet still effective) for the purposes of this video with the use of poster putty. I chose to use the basing paste because it’s actually very easy to use, and for how well it adheres the AT-RT to the base, and for how easily it let me preserve the firing arcs. I also like the uneven surface it produces that still shows through the flock. You’re right about the logs, and if that last big log wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment addition I might have applied it earlier :)
Have you thought of using weathering powder for the weathering effects? These seem pretty effective.
+Sorrento Tech Hi Sorrento! I do have some weathering pigments but I felt using bottled paints would be easier to follow (and still produce some cool rust effects) :)
Thanks, am contemplating adding weathering powder to minis... they seem great on model r&r.
excellent! Are you going to make any videos about gloomhaven minis?
Thank you! It's possible that I might just produce some PDF quick guides for the Gloomhaven minis; I'm not sure yet :)
Thats great news! You've inspired me to try this even that the only connection I have with painting is some videos I have watched with Bob Ross on TV when I was a kid! :P Keep up the good work!!
I am getting more excited for Legion to come out and to get back into painting, thank you! I do have a quick question. I noticed you glued the legs, then glued the struts later. Do they only fit in one position? I also noticed that with the arm and the handlebar. Any time I have tried gluing separately, nothing lines up. Thanks for the great videos!
Hi Elliot! The legs only fit in one position (which is why I glued them in first). The struts however are not so fixed in that if you were to glue the struts first, it would be pretty easy to get the angle wrong and then have problems when you glue on the legs :)
the pencil tip is great ! sorry if already answered, what are the supplies you use for your bases (i mean rocks, wood, etc...) ?
Thanks! Hmm it's been a few years.. I think if you go back to the first episode or so, you should find the basing process detailed there.. 😀
Hi Sorastro, Thank you for those great videos. When are you planning to upload the Legion videos about the Imperial forces? Stormtroopers, Darth vader, AT-ST, etc. Thank you!
Thank you! The next couple of videos are complete but awaiting approval before I can release them, which I'm hoping will be any day now :)
Great! Thank you a lot for the information. I hope they are stormtroopers and vader! :-)
No problem! The next two videos will cover the Stromtroopers and Speeder Bikes; you'll have to wait a bit longer for Vader... :)
Ahhh ok Thank you for the clarification :-). But you will launch Vader before legion launches officially, right? And are you planning to cover AT-ST too? thank you a again for your great work, its awesome.
I'll certainly have Vader finished before launch (although the approval process is beyond my control so it may be tight...) and I will almost certainly be covering the AT-ST :)
Amazing as always, though I am sitting this game out. Do you have plans for more Imperial Assault vids over the next few months?
Thank you! Yes I’ll be resuming the IA series this month with some Ahsoka Tano :)
When are you doing more videos? I check everyday as I am excited for new tutorials!!
Hi Joe! I've actually completed the next two episodes; I just have to wait for licensing approval before I can release them, which could be any day.. :)
Excellent news! Can’t wait to get my hands on this game. I’m unfortunately deployed when it comes out but I’ll be getting it as soon as I’m back
That's something to look forward to for sure! Be safe. :)
Oh yes. I’ll be keeping up to date with your painting guides. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you sir! I'll keep doing my best :)
Thank you for this great video! I love your star wars legion videos and how you explain all the process. Great work!! One question, are you going to release all the videos of the core box of star wars legion before it launches? (it seems to be the first weeks of February). I want to see all the videos of Empire forces because those are the ones i will use :-) . Thank you!
Thank you! Yes I plan to cover the whole core box before the game releases :)
That is great! Looking forward to your next videos covering the empire :-). And one last question. It seems that AT-ST will be launched with the core box (at the same time). Are you going to cover that before game launches too? Thank you.
Hi! I'd like to cover the AT-ST but I don't yet know when I'll be receiving the plastic so stay tuned... :)
Ok! That would be great... I cant wait to see the AT-ST tutorial for Legion :-). Please keep us informed! Thank you.
awesome video!
Thanks a lot Damein! :)
Loving the green basing material. What are you using?
Hi Matthew! Oops I forgot to include that in the video description (now fixed!); I'm using the Javis Fine Turf (mostly the Mid Green colour, but also some of the Dark and the Light) :)
Amazing paint work :D
Thank you eRBe! :D
Great Video, love the sponge tip. Question though; I've noticed you've been kind of branching out using Valljeo more and more in your videos. I don't mind since I can relatively easily tell the Citadel equivalent but what I'm wondering is why you've been using more from Vallijeo? Thanks!
Thanks KBums! I just enjoy trying new colours and brands of paint, and if I find a colour I really like for a certain project I'll use it! The German Uniform for example is such a lovely shade of green, and one that there's no precise match for in the Citadel line. I've also grown very fond of Deck Tan (as you may have noticed!). I think it would be more unusual for a painter to only ever stick to using a single brand of paint tbh :)
Ah, alright I understand. I prefer Citadel, mostly because that's what I started out with however, I have also branched off a bit too (German Gray and Ivory...I blame you for that haha) so yeah I see what you mean. Verity is the spice of life after all. :)
This is really super awesome. I love your videos. However, I really think it would have been SO cool if you would have impressed the front foot into the basing medium behind it's final position so it looks like a footprint from it walking through the mud. That would have been so cool. Keep it up!
Thanks Lena! I love the footprint idea, and I actually tried it but it didn’t work out too well, however I think if I let the basing paste dry a while first it might turn out better. I’ll give it another go on my next AT-RT :)
Has always perfect vids and minis ! Keep going :).
Little question, while you're refering to couple drop of Glaze to thin the paint, is't 1 portion of paint for 1 portion of Glaze ?? I haved try to thin with glaze because I like your wet blending technique. But I have difficulty to figure out the right quantity of glaze.
Thx, :)
Hi Bob! If you're referring to my adding Vallejo's Glaze Medium when I'm wet blending, then just a couple of drops will do, and maybe a drop or two of water. I couldn't give a precise ration though because it depends on how thick the paint is to begin with :)
Awesome job, thanks for the inspiration. What brush do you use to color the green parts?
I see it listed now.
Hey... So I watched your Star Wars Imperial Assault videos and followed along and painted my own set (which look pretty good so thank you). Now I have Fallout the board game, would you please do a video tutorial for those?! :D its only 5 figures! :) but mostly I don't know where to start with painting them, and I'm cautious about buying paints. I love your channel and your videos! (And I know you're probably busy with this whole painting series. But still a request.) :)
Hi Ryan! I'm actually planning to provide a set of PDF quick guides for the Fallout minis so watch out for them on my FB page/Twitter etc :)
Sorastro's Painting can't wait!!!!!! :)
Great tutorials Sorastro!! Question tho, how do you keep your paint wet in the well so long? Do you add water to it? Mine starts to dry so fast that it's difficult to go back to it
Thanks Jay! Yes I usually thin all my paints with some water. You could mix in some retarder if you really wanted to extend the drying time, or use a wet palette of course.. :)
Fantastic.
+Starfish1 Thank you! :)
Beautiful work, I can see a "conversion" brand new AT-RT with a clone trooper from the BARC Speeder kit, if only my wallet felt heavier.
Nice idea! :)
Since the clone wars box set came out an there’s a new expansion unit coming this summer. At-Rt with a clone pilot.🤗
Blitz-Mekanika really?!
Matthew Raitt www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-legion/products/republic-rt-unit-expansion/
Awesome stuff, I wonder what the empire videos will be like? How much can you really do to a stormtrooper ;)
Ha ha - not much probably so keep the expectations realistic :)
Very nice!
I was almost expecting to see some magnets in action towards the end, but I guess you're saving this for later forces... from the dark? ;)
Thanks! Ha - since making this video I have actually bought some magnets so may still see some magnet action from me soon.. :)
Loving the fast uploads!! Stunning work as always. Quick question, is that basing paste really strong enough to hold the mini on the base? It would be fine for displaying but what about for playing the game with it?
Thank you! It's surprisingly strong actually, but you can test it on a smaller spare mini if you're unsure. I had a demo game a couple of weeks ago and had not problem thrashing the Imperials with my painted Rebel set :)
Awesome! I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the reply.
i was going to ask the same question. i would love an update on how well it holds up. i've been holding off on buying any textured paints from GW, but if they double as glue/cement then that's another matter.
I tried it on a plastic mini to adhere it to a poker chip (been using those for bases) and it stuck pretty good but i dont think the material my poker chip is made out off hold adhesives well anyways. I will try plastic on plastic and let ya know. its currently drying. :)
AzuriteT3 update, I tried plastic to plastic with the earth texture and holy cow, it's pretty strong. Not super glue status but it will hold up for moderate play no problem.
Great work😍👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Darth Marcello! :)
Hi Sorastro, great work as always - a couple of questions though if you don't mind - Firstly I don't understand the point of the zenithal highlight - at 4min 30 for example you just paint over the entire thing in one colour, hiding all the highlight you put on with the spray at the start.
Also, when I try to mix my paints with equal parts water (as you mentioned a lot in your videos), then paint it on, it just runs off, or collects in the edges, leaving an almost completely transparent colour on the surface, and I have to go back with a tissue, mop it up, and then add loads more paint to the mix to get it to stay on the surface. What am I doing wrong here? I'm following your guide exactly as you say but have either missed something, or you use a different type of water then me :)
Thanks
Hi! Yep the zenithal prime really isn't essential - as mentioned in the priming stage, a plain prime in black, white or grey would be fine. Regarding paint consistency - can I ask which colour it is that's behaving like that? It sounds like you're either over thinning the paint, in which as just add less water, or it could be that you need to give the bottle a more vigorous shake first. Also, for the base colours here I'm keeping the paint pretty thick (3:44) :)
So cool.
Thank you! :D
Lovely!
Thanks mate! :)
Thank you for the amazing video, can we already buy these figures?
Hi! The game isn’t out yet but is due 1st quarter of this year so it won’t be too long now :)
Sorastro's Painting Thank you for the very quick reaction, I will certainly buy them once they are on shelf! :)
+BulldogGames1 YT No problem! :)
Amazing! Makes me wanna be the rebels for a change lol
Thanks Jonathan! They do look pretty bad *** :D In a recent demo game I had I spanked the Imperials too :)
Sorastro's Painting Nice! So excited to play
another very great video! :)
Thank you sir! :)
Great video! I've read that you should always glue before painting to form a better bond. Do you have issues regarding this (is your bond strong enough for boardgaming)?
Thanks Gonzalo! I think that's generally pretty good advice; in this case it wasn't an issue for me, mostly because of how snugly the parts fit together. In fact the legs and struts can be assembled without any glue at all and it is a very sturdy model. (You can try this by dry fitting the model before gluing anything.) :)
Sorastro's Painting thanks for the reply! I'll keep that in mind
Alternatively you can probably just cover over the surfaces that are going to be glued with some blu-tac/poster putty or masking tape during painting :)
Excellent weathering techniques, these rebels need to do a good refurbishing of their vehicles. :D
Ha - thanks Mikel :)
Could you please do more videos about the descents ?
Hi! Yes - I will be doing more Descent :)
Sorastro's Painting thank you very much !!! I was a fan of thoses videos ! It motivated me to paint !! :D
That's nice to hear! Thank you :D
LOVE IT!!!
Thanks mate! I'm pleased you like it :)
Sorastro, what would you recommend for someone who wants to get this game, but can't afford to purchase all of the paints you use in these videos?
I've never painted a mini in my life, though I am excited to give it a shot. However, even when substituting Citadel for VGC, the cost of Luke alone is well over $100. I'd like to get there in time, but I think I could stand to just have them looking decent on the table to start with.
Hi Adam! Firstly, I'd recommend waiting until I've covered the whole base game, then you can start by painting the minis that require the least number of paints (such as the Stormtroopers perhaps). Then you can gradually build up your paint collection as you progress through the set. Secondly, if you skip out all of the "optional" steps - such as the weathering and most of the highlights, and even the basing, you should end up with a much shorter paint list. You could even revisit the mini at a later date to add some of those additional elements if you like (even after providing the varnish). :)
Sorastro's Painting Thank you for the advice! Will painting over a varnish reduce the quality?
Hi Adam! I’ve never had a problem painting over varnish myself :)
Hi Sorastro. Thank you again for this great video. I have a question. Do you know any other good alternatives that works the same as the 2 secret weapon paints are you using in the video? (Red Rust and Orange Rust). Here in spain is not possible to buy those paints (online or offline), there are not shops or distributors that work with them and i suppose in other places of Europe will happen the same. On the other hand, in the future videos (AT-ST or other tech vehicles of Legion), could be possible to use other alternatives like citadel or vallejo paints for those weathering effects? (that are available worldwide). Thank you a lot.
Hi there! For the Red Rust you could use something like Rhinox Hide and for the Orange Rust Skrag Brown would be a good match :)
Thank you Sorastro. But those Secret Weapon paints are made for weathering effects, so i suppose they will not have the same pigment or density comparing with normal acrylic paints. Have you tried and compared them?
On the other hand, are you planning to use more standard and available paints for weathering effects in your next tutorials? Thank you!
PD: I do not see these paintings even on ebay, which is very estrange, it seems that they are not easy to buy.
Hi! The Secret Weapon rust paints are still just acrylic paints, and although they have quite a high pigmentation and somewhat thin consistency, you will be able to achieve very similar results with the Citadel paints I suggested (which you can try for yourself on a spare mini). Incidentally, you could also order the Secret Weapon paints from elementgames.co.uk/ because they do ship internationally... :)
Thank you Sorastro! On the other hand, have you tried Vallejo pigments? I think they are great for weathering effects (I think one of the best options at this moment). It could be great if you could use those pigments in your next Star Wars Legion videos (for example AT-ST) to show other techniques and other paints that are more available worldwide.
How adhesive is the brown earth ? Will it be strong enough for game play. All the lifting, Dropping, knocking etc.
Hi qentsy! If feels plenty strong enough to me, but I haven't performed a drop test! :)
I think I am pretty damn good at painting minis and then I watch this guy.... sigh.
