I’m just really getting into body building and I have to say that the 70s 80s and early 90s were like the glory days, those guys looked like Greek Gods
Those were truly beautiful creatures - the goal was to achieve the peak of male physical perfection - a universal aesthetic. What they do now is much less "technical" - just get BIG, BIG, and BIGGER - it's thoughtless. I think there was an intellect behind the classic aesthetic that is absent today. Guys like Arnold & Mike Mentzer weren't looked at as "dumb lunks" like the bodybuilders today are oft thought of, legitimately or not. The entire goal has become unfocused and the important details are largely lost!

Why don't the classic physique competitors not just try to look exactly like the guys from the 70's (i.e. by only taking the stuff that the guys from the 70's were taking, nothing more and nothing less)? That is classic bodybuilding that we all want to see.
Judges should reward points based on how closely one achieves that 'Arnold-esque' look that is deemed ideal by the majority of bodybuilding fans rather than just the on the boring same old 'size and conditioning' factors that incite competitors to take things to the extreme and thus throw aesthetics out of the window.
To that end, I agree with the person above me who is claiming that even classic physique competitors are too shredded to be considered aesthetic these days.

I think Frank Zane had the perfect symmetry. That should be the ideal physique for today's bodybuilders, not the big gut that a lot of pro's seem to have. I have to agree with what's been said in this video, and judges should pay more attention to the look/symmetry of the bodybuilder, not how much bulk they have.

Look here, the terms "bodybuilder" and "bodybuilding" have become a joke with the general public. I'm an old school lifter from way back and I never liked the term "bodybuilding" anyway so for those of us who are legit let's separate ourselves from these freaks. Over the years many people have asked me what I do to stay in shape and I always reply "weight-training". I have NEVER referred to myself as a "bodybuilder" but ALWAYS as a "weight-trainer". I suggest the rest of you start telling people the same thing too, be an old-school "weight-trainer" and leave the comical sounding terms "bodybuilder" and "bodybuilding" to the degenerate drug addicts who choose to mutilate themselves both externally and internally just so they can compete in that ridiculous activity. Happy weight-training everyone.

Even if people don't like it Bodybuilders will do this to win competitions . Most of them are doing it for money not for appreciation or to get famous . The only reason we can stop it is to change the judging criteria in competitions & giving more recognition to Aesthetic Bodybuilding .

The problem is in the nature of the competition its self. The goal is to achieve an abstract ideal that few (if any) men actually have the genetics necessary to reach. High level bodybuilding is a 24 hour-per-day obsession where every meal and hour of rest is treated like work - and it's all centered around being judged on your appearance.
When the 24 hour per day routine and regimented diet plus drugs still doesn't get you looking like superman, the inferiority complex kicks and necessity to win kicks in and they look for another competitive edge. Inevitably, some go overboard and people notice.
Ronnie lifted insanely heavy weights, on par with powerlifters, and Dorian used to have trouble sitting on the toilet for days straight after he did his leg routine. There's practically noone who wants to work that hard anymore, so when they see other people winning with oil and roids, and insulin, and HGH they think that's the way to win.
Ronnie and Dorian were on roids everyone in bodybuilding is on roids!
All sports have an ideal bodyshape that best fits it. The problem with bodybuilding is that the people who creates those competitions don't have rules against the use of substances like other sports do

HGH happened. 100% of people who get to that level in bodybuilding are uneducated men who have MASSIVE cases of Body Dysmorphia. It's a form of brain damage or at the very least a mental disorder. It's Anorexia, just the other extreme, i mean look at the guy in the picture, only someone with brain damage or someone quite mentally ill would think that looks good, same with Synthol kid and big lenny.
The fact that Anorexia is panned, people are attacked over "killing themselves", yet people getting SO massive, they're in imminent danger of death at any time is applauded? even though it's the exact same mental disorder?

The problem with Synthol and other SEOs is that most pros use them in very precise doses that make them completely unnoticeable but significantly improve the roundness and overall size of the upper chest/shoulders/tris etc
Yes bodybuilders from the GE(Golden Era) didn’t do this because it wasn’t around. No one had discovered it by that point.
Steroids however were around, and they were playing around with them. So who’s to say that if the golden era wasn’t exposed to synthol or SEO, that they wouldn’t have experimented with that also

90's is the era that started the decline. It was the the era when aesthetics no longer mattered. So many greats like Ray, Levrone, Labrada, Wheeler, failed to take the Mr O title because Dorian Yates was just bigger. Yates has no aesthetics at all (in my opinion) and just outsized them in a few mandatories. Once competitors realised that no amount of refining their physique could outdo sheer size, pumping themselves full of oil seemed to be the only option.

I think the problem reflects our culture. With social media everyone is comparing themselves to others and feeling insecure. I don't have the solution to this but I empathize with them because I've experienced it too and I'm working on it.
