Satisfying refret on an acoustic guitar

  • In this video, I refret an acoustic Ibanez, with the fretboard defect corrected. The customer had a problem with the sound and quiestionable setup of the guitar. The reason was worn frets.
    Old and worn frets can significantly affect the sound of the guitar and make it difficult to play the instrument, as it will be impossible to adjust the strings to the right distance above the neck.
    Refret with the correction of defects of the fretboard will help to improve the convenience of playing the guitar, preserve the sound quality and make playing the guitar more comfortable.

    I watch a lot of luthier and guitar tech channels but I have to say, the way you quickly get after the job at hand, with techniques born out of the confidence that true experience (performing many tasks over and over and discovering what works best) brings is so refreshing. I imagine you get HUNDREDS of keyboard 'experts' telling you you're 'doing it wrong' . No, you don't do things the way 'other techs do it'. Yet, here you are. Still working. Still pumping out the product. Still 'doing it'. If you weren't able to satisfy the musicians whose instruments they trust you with, you wouldn't be here, right? 😎👍

      I watched different luthiers on UA-cam. Some, like Ted Wodford, approach a job in a very meticulous way, and some, like Jerry Rosa, will scare the hell out of you in the way he'll hack away at an old instrument, though in the end, both achieve remarkable results. Tanya has her own style and knows what works for her. Very impressive.

    Nice job. Crazy how some people wind the entire string around the tuner posts. BTW (for those who may not know), the little notch on the plastic string winder is designed to be a bridge pin puller. Works great. 🙂

    It looks to me, she has the same passion for this job as Ted Woodford. It‘s so pleasing to watch her and she is funny 😀

    • @J_____C
      @J_____C 10 місяців тому +6

      Ted is much more careful and planned & methodical about the things he does though. Like after nipping the tangs. There's still a burr there that needs to be filed down. She skips that step and tears up binding & fretboards in the process. Ted doesn't. They, aren't alike at all.
      Shes better than Jerry Rosa for sure. But nowhere near Ted. Not even close. Ted's been doing it for like 30 years or something. It looks to me like she just rushes through it, trying to get done as soon as possible. She doesn't even take time to protect the fretboard when sanding frets. Oh no. Let's just sand scratches all over the fretboard too. Yea....no. Not like Ted. Not even close. Having passion isn't all of it. She needs the skills to go with that passion. She needs the patience. She needs to work on a lot.

      @@J_____Cshe is a dedicated luthier and fixed hundreds of guitars so this is probably the fastest way for her, anyway she is better than me and i only salivate at the thought of a hot ukranian chick (that knows what she is doing) fixing my guitars.
      P.S i don't like that she sands the fretboard either but hell, could you tell that she did it? i couldn't.

    love the work and you do a great job! A couple tips I have, lower the soldering iron temperature or dont heat them up as much so you dont burn the binding. and after sanding the fretboard, before you clean the fret slots out you should paste wax, so you dont get pastewax in the slots. you will get better adhesion.
