Exactly what I needed to see, after I purchased the Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper I was told it would not work with Radius, now I see it does, thank you very much
Funny how every refret on UA-cam for les pauls always take the nibs off the binding or cut through the binding and fret upto to edge devaluing the guitar and what do know ...another disappointment. What a let down

Hard to capture just how good this video is in terms of clarity and specificity. Excellent teaching. Definitely copy the little filing jig that he uses at the 12 minute mark. It makes a huge difference.
id realy like to have my fret board fixed by you Eric top notch i see why the tool cost so much iv built a lot of instrumints and these tools would of made my work a lot easer thank you excellent work
Eric, you're the man. Thank you so much for that very thorough and nicely paced video. You take the time to explain the important details which makes so that a DIYer can hopefully avoid the most common pitfalls.
The most boring part! Erick used a selection of mini scrapers and a razor knife for the job. We're working on a new video series that will cover cleaning up the board after a super glue refret. Stay tuned!
@@stewmac great! I too was hoping to see what materials (naptha? Tack cloth?) were used and how. I would also like to know which Z file he used and why. Awesome video!! Thanks!!
Hey, Erick grew his hair out! I like it! I was watching some of your 6 year old ones yesterday on pots and another on changing tuners then saw this one. Nice upgrade!
Beautiful work. Also, I cant be the only one who finds these StewMac videos to be deeply relaxing. There is just something so satisfying abobt watching masters at work. The lighting, audio, camerawork and editing is excellent too.
Incredible tutorial. Thank you so much! Sometime in the future I’d like to buy some cheap garage sale instruments to practice on. I find this type of thing to be therapeutic… intimate work that is very satisfying when finished. Looking forward to learning more with you all!
This is an absolutely terrific video. I've learned so much and I'm only 6 minutes into it. That dogleg trick is critical, I will definitely be using it when I finally take the plunge to refret the old Ibanez.
Brilliant content as expected from Erick. What wasn't expected is to see Erick down about 50#. Hoping it was diet and excersize and not the results of any health issues! Please let us know Erick!
Great video. Exactly what I needed. Got a '78 Les Paul with rounded over binding that I want to refret and wasn't sure how to handle it. Thanks Eric. It's good to see you again and you're looking good. Also, as always you're videos are awesome! Thanks.
Nice as always Erick! One thing I do different - I don't glue the frets until they are all pressed in. That way I can check each one for level with a rocker to make sure they are all pressed in. Ocassionally you'll have an end that doesn't seat, or a middle that pops up, so it's nice to find that before you glue so you can re-press.
Hey Geoff! Thanks for the detailed comment, I can tell you didn't watch the whole video, haha! I am 100% with you on this. I pressed the frets in and ran some #10 under them. I only apply glue in the slots if it is water soluble. We have not been to SF since 2019, looking forward to dropping in on you again sometime!
I half expected Erick to hammer on a "jaw" from the fret jaw tool (or similar) when he hammered the fretboard extension frets in order to spread the hammer blows out more evenly. Of course, he didn't need that help, but watching the video and seeing the frets flex up & down as they were hammered in made me think of what might could be done to get a more "even" force on those particular frets. Thank you for this detailed video!
@@stewmac oh really? very interesting! i've been using your jaws 2 for many years to do just that, in fact i find it's easier than the 1 so i use it for the whole neck. at the moment i have to rig up a big wooden bar under the heel of a les paul or whatever, using various stacks of shims and pads and whatever to fully support things then attack it with the jaws 2 (bottom caul removed) going over the whole thing. a purpose-built adjustable support caul would be _great_
STEW MAC IS READING MY MIND. NEEDED TO SEE A TUT ON THIS AND THEN IT JUST SHOWED UP! Kinda weird. Kinda kickass too. Ha. I Kinda love this tut. You guys are awesome.

Erick you're an absolute legend and your shop is spotless, lovin' your neck-jig when I got mine off you guys it was the older wooden one, still works perfectly as does all the tools I got from you, can't believe how clean your shop is 😂😂 take care and stay safe, peace and love to you from Ireland brother man ✌️❤️🇮🇪🍀
Very good info in this video!I have an Ibanez pf 200 needing a refret,i'm glad I watched this before I get started on it!Thanks for this one, great information!
I saw you file the fret ends so they are flush with the binding, but in the next shot the fret ends are beveled and are no longer flush with the binding, but instead a bit shy. Did I miss something? Or is it just that the binding is also beveled and creating an optical illusion of being wider than fret ends?
Great video. I do my own fret work and this is precisely why I no longer buy guitars with bound fretboards. That being said, I am kinda hot for that new tang nipper.( and I would like to start , or hear a band named “Mangle the Tang”)
Why not keep the old frets and use them to cut the new frets. Then you have perfectly sized frets and can also measure how far in you need to cut tang. Then voila...insta seat frets? What am I missing about doing it that way? Seems like the time you save you could also round off the fret ends vs filing after installation. Sounds easy so what am I missing? Great Video and Thank You! Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Thankyou for sharing this knowledge. I have a very nice guitar I'm going to try on. It doesn't have an edge binding, but is a finished side. It's filled with color filler, and a gloss overcoat. It's going to be tough not to sand the gloss coat when sanding the ends flat.
Eric............Awesome video tutorial. The attention to detail is first class. The only thing that I do different to you is to use hot hide glue diluted a little more than normal to seat and glue the frets.
Wonderful video. I need to replace 2 frets on a neck with binding (on a surprisingly nice Chinese made Hofner Verythin). Will need to buy some new tools. Wrote them down but PLEASE feel free to link me to a StewMac shopping list.

Every second is pure gold. This is why when you find a tech you like, you don't ask how much for a refret.
You just don't.
