Ahoyhoy there, Fellow UA-camrino! There was also a children's television program with Burl Ives, a man who was in fact, in a Disnee film ( So Dear to My Heart ) the series was actually called" Pied Piper "

There used to be a series on CBS that ran on Saturday mornings called CBS: Storybreak, when I was a kid. There was an episode entitled "What Really Happened In Hamelin" that put forth the theory that after the Piper rid the town of rats (by having the citizens put out their salted meats and covering up all sources of water aside from the river,) the rats were so thirsty they drowned themselves. When denied payment, the Piper befriends the local bakers apprentice (a child) and convinces him to bake a batch of honeybuns with rye infected with Ergot, (which contains LSA; a less potent form of LSD.) The Piper instructs the apprentice that the honeybuns are only for the children in the town; that the adults are to have none. The children hallucinate, along with the other symptoms of Ergot poising, known as St. Elmo's Fire. The Piper convinces the parents of the town that he can cure the children; but must take them elsewhere in order to do so. The parents, feeling they have no other choice; allow the Piper to take the children away. Pretty fucking dark, right? Yeah, this was on a Saturday morning series for kids, lucky me.

The version I read was different from all of these. The town's people were all greedy, but the mayor still promised a reward for anyone who could rid them of the rats. One resident actually knew the piper and sent him a letter for help. The next day, he arrived in town and hypnotized the rats, leading them to a river where they all drowned. Upon returning to the town though, they only gave him one gold coin instead of the promised 90 silver coins and 9 gold ones. He shamed the people for being greedy and led the children away right that second, instead of waiting for all the adults to leave. They followed him and were hidden as the piper went back to the town. By the time he got back, the town's people had learned their lesson and payed the piper in full. The piper actually returned the children in this version, and the greedy town of Hamelin turned into a town of generosity and hospitality.

That's also a possibility. Elsewhere have mentioned a ghost story from my great grandmother's family about a bar of light. In any case , the path way they walked where the family encountered the light, was a path actually used during the Childrens Crusade.Took place near Gambach, Bavaria. Hard to really say what happend to these children.

I once heard a twisted version where the pied piper wanted a place in the town or something and what happened was when he led the rats elsewhere, and came back waiting for his prize, the townspeople didn’t give it to him, so, in front of the townspeople, he led the children of the town off the edge of a cliff. It’s really freaking twisted, but that’s a version I’ve heard.

I lived in Germany from 1978 to 1984. I was told there is another story behind the Pied Piper: The Bubonic plague that killed 130 citizens in the small town of Hamlin in 1284. As the story goes, people were very superstitious of cats at that time. They believed witches used cats as their familiars, or imbodied cats to secretly put curses on people around them. So, they gathered every cat they could find and killed them. Without the cat population to eat the mice, the mice population grew. The mice had fleas, which are carriers of the bubonic plague still today. When the fleas bit people, they got sick and died. The ones who the fleas had no effect on, were people who worked closely with horses. Mice fleas avoid the scent of horses, thus only they and their households survived. In this story, the Pied Piper is death, the children are the village citizens that death took with him. That year Death (The Pied Piper) came twice: First for the cats, which are the natural rat killers, then for the citizens.

A minstrel would have been a big deal back then, kids would have flocked to see what was happening and to hear the music. But I think the last idea was more likely.

I think also it could've been someone the children trusted, and spent time with daily & the pipe could have been a dog whistle. Some degree of deafness was a very common ailment in the middle ages. Especially since they never treated ear infections, and when they did it was with pouring breast milk, coriander, and other odd concoctions down the person's ear. It could've been an earlier version of today's dog whistles. It was common for rat catchers to train animals to kill rats. It wouldn't be unusual for that person to have a whistle like that.

The pied piper story always reminds of another story that takes place with a man and his old mother. I think it comes from China but here goes. After a perivous king dies his son takes over and is unhappy with the old people in his kingdom because he thinks all the do is take up space and can't work as hard as younger stronger people. So he decrees that anyone over 71 years of age must be taken into the mountains and left to die and anybody who does not do so will be put to death. So the citizens so this though that aren't happy about it. Well a year or so later a mans mother hit that magic number of 71 and he knew that he must do so. There's a town record and everyone knows his mother is 71 now. So he puts his mother in his back as she could not walk well and heads towards the mountains. As he is walking he keeps hearing the snapping of twings and ask his mother what it is and she tell him that she is marking a path so he will not get lost on his way back after he leads her to die. This act make steh man cry and he can't bear o leave his mother there so after dark he sneaks her back home and hides her in a secret room under his house. A few days later a king form another land come to take over this one but he tell the king that if he can supply him with what he ask fro for 2 days he will leave and go somewhere else. The first thing he ask for is a drum that beats itself. So the king goes to the wise men but because they are young that have no answers so he sends criers to town promising gold for anyone who came bring him a drum that beast itself. So that night the man goes to his mother tell her of the news of the day as he had been doing and she laughs when he mentions the drum that can beat itself. When he asks why that is funny she explain making on is simple. All he must do is make drum with one side and lace the inside a sweet substance to attract some bees. While the bees are inside he must seal the other side. The bees will bang into the sides trying to get out and it will seems as if the drum beast itself. So the man does as his mother instructs and takes the new drum to the castle and the young king is ecstatic thanks the man with his bag of gold and presents it to the dictator who isn't actually very happy as he knows the land is filled with riches to be plundered so he gives the next request of ten lengths of ropes made form ash thinking there is no possible way he can give him that. So the king ask his wise men but again they have no clue so she sends the criers out again promising that anyone who brings him the ask ropes will grant him one request of his desire. Again as the man tell his mother she chuckles to herself. "Our young king is certainly in trouble." she says. So the man ask if it is even possible. She tell him it is that he musk soak the rope in something and when he burn they they will not burn but that they will look as if made form ash. It is at this point I forget what he is supposed to soak them in. So forgive me. Anyway he does o and again takes them to the king who in turn presents them to the dictator who is enraged that he must leave. The king asks him what he would like. Money? women? to be made a lord? But the man shakes his head and says all he wants is his mother. So the king says alright when she turns 71 you don't have to take her to the mountains. He replies "No you don"t understand she already that but I couldn't leave her in the mountains to die. It was her who told me how to make those things." IT was then that the king understood older peopel might not be able to work as hard but they have experience in life and may know something a younger generations does not. I think in the end he retracted the decree. also it might have been 3 things but again things get a little foggy as this was something i read way back in high school in like tenth grade. But The piped piper reminds me of it. It is also a shining example of why we should listen to our elders. Thought you mind have found it interesting I hope someone did. Sry it was so long.

well your are very welcome I am very glad you enjoyed it. that was just one story I remebered reading way back in high school I know some celtic myths like the story about Rhiannon/Epona the horse goddess not the Epona from zelda lol. I love Mythology and fairy tales because they often have something to teach or a moral like in Cinderella you could say that beauty lies within. Just to prove a point I will explain what mean by that. Cinderella spelt in the cinders her name wasn't really Cinderella. maybe it was Ella but we aren't told that. Now most people would see girl who might be pretty if she washed with out knowing she sleeps there to stay warm at night. I sure she has blanket and maybe a pillow if she lucky but when you are one the floro that is where all the could air is so it feels much colder then in actually is. Like in summer when it get so hot transistors blow and you low power for a time because they are up high where the warmer air is. She was lucky enough to have a being that watched over her and when they really needed them after being treated so badly and denied something she was promised that she wished so hard the fairy godmother was able to come in to being to give her a very special gift. But as we know all good things must end and is another lesson is teaches. Good things must end so even better things can happen. She gets to marry the prince and become a princess for example something her stepsisters desperately wanted but didn't deserve they wanted it so badly as Jon put in another video one cut off her toes the other hacked off the back of her heel. Sorry for being gruesome there but that s the true story. I am gald you enjoyed my story though and if i can think of anymore obsuce one maybe I'll make my on video heck maybe will look this one up and tell it myself. It'll only be my voice as I am not that great with making slideshows and don't feel comfortable showing my face yet all i have on my channel right now is some lets play videos I did but they aren't great. Again glad you enjoyed it and sorry for long post ^_^; peace you you and yours and may light shine of you and your family.

Crazy how it's talking about how it's been so many years after their kids left and parents didn't start really taking notice until so many started disappearing. Just reminds me of the whole R Kelly situation, how no one barely even blinked an eye, or either turned a blind eye to him and Aaliyah being together. He already has all these allegations against him and has for years. More girls get involved then NOW, people are taking notice, protesting, and talking about how long it's been since they've seen their child and yada yada.

    I’ve heard a different version.
The Pied Piper was Satan or at least a representative of him. He came to a town that was suffering, and offered his “services”. He made a deal with the towns leaders to rid them of the plagued rats who were spreading disease and overtaking the towns food storage. Starving and sick, they were desperate. Obviously,he wanted their souls, and they, facing certain death, reluctantly agreed for the sake of the townspeople. He then led the rats away with a high pitched instrument, much like a dog whistle that only the rats could hear, that drove the rats AWAY... and no one else in the town knew. The rats didn’t FOLLOW him. He chased them out.
When he returned to collect, the leaders suddenly were overcome with fear and regret. They begged and pleaded for a new deal. He replied,”The only thing that I will accept is a sacrifice of great worth in your place...your children.” They, overcome with fear, selfishness, and self preservation agreed.
While the townspeople were at church, the leaders gathered the towns children, and brought them to him. He led them away,to an obviously gruesome fate. When the townspeople returned home, they were horrified to see their children missing. When they asked the town leaders what had happened, they made up the Pied Piper story to deflect blame from themselves.
Ironically enough,by sacrificing their own innocent children in their place, the towns leaders had unknowingly forfeited their souls to Satan anyway. When they went to Hell,Satan told them that it was he who brought the plague of rats to their town in the first place. Instead of turning to God like the children’s parents were doing in church, they turned to their own wicked schemes and brought suffering on many....including eternal suffering to themselves.
The only “happy ending” to the tale is that none of the children, though surely dying in unspeakable ways, went to Hell. They were innocent and Satan had no eternal hold on them. Sadly,if the leaders would’ve simply joined in with the rest of the townspeople in church to pray,Satan would’ve fled, and God would’ve commanded the rats to leave. The crops would return, and sicknesses healed. If not for the wickedness, schemings, and lack of faith of the few leaders, the suffering of the many could’ve been completely avoided......

It is possible that there could have been a piper of some sort that kidnapped 130 children. Maybe not through magic, but through music. Music was popular at the time and if the children heard it, with their parents gone, they could have been curious and led away. It’s like how children are led away by strangers. Strangers aren’t going to kidnap children by revealing their intentions. They will offer candy and look friendly with how they talk. Children will trust and follow them. I have no doubt this is probably what happened, if this tale is true.

Their dismembered remains were found scattered around the forest and hanging from tree branchs, creepy stuff.

it's "der Rattenfänger" not "das rattenfänger" because german has three different translation of "the" which explain the "gender" of the word. Easier said in german a word can be male, female or neutral. The word "rattenfänger" has two different parts put togheter to one word "rat" and "catcher" while rat is a female word in german and catcher is a male word the new founded word always has the same type as the last word what makes "Ratcatcher" a male word.
Why google said it's a neutral word leaves me clueless but that's not a big problem. In general I just want to make sure that a missinformation won't lead to more missinformation and stuff :D
But the video was really nice researched.

    It's "Der Rattenfänger."
I know our articles are very confusing. :/ I'm no linguist, but let me try to explain it.
Germans use gendered articles and all our words are sorted into such. *"Der", "Die"* and *"Das."*
*- Die =* female or plural for groups.
Like in "Die Frau" (the woman) or "Die Frauen/Die Männer" (The women/ The Men).
While "Die Gruppe" (the group) is also female. But only if you start the sentence with this word.
"Die Gruppe ist in der Kneipe." (The group is in the pub.)
    *- Der =* male.
As in "Der Mann" (The man).
When you're part of a group or describe something IN the group it's "Der".
... germans have to make everything complicated. _>

Id like to add a viewpoint. Usually folklore & mythology have basis in real world events and are explained in story form to help more ppl understand it. This is leaning more towards the emigration view of this story. Possibly, the pied piper could be another country (Transylvania, Prussia, etc) with multi-colored attractions (jobs, alternate lifestyles) that lured the children (towns people) away.

When I was in 6th grade I had to re-write the Pied Piper from one of the children’s point of view. And I’ve never even heard of this story before.
Since I didn’t know about it, I asked my dad and he told me that it’s about a guy who gets paid to kill rats.
And after I heard that I was annoyed how I got a really boring story to re-write.
But my teacher gave me the real book story and all I can say is... that really ruined me
