Hydraulic lifters in these engines no matter what people say. And yes, yours are sticky. My Trooper 3.2 1995 do the exact same thing and gets quiet after a couple of minutes and/or a bit of RPM´s. A lot of engines have the same issues. And in my experience, frequent oil+filter changes is more important than the kind of oil you pour in it. And i have tried some different miracle-fluids which made no difference. If the engine has been badly maintained, i recommend a couple short interval oil changes. (and excuse any bad English, i am a Swede)
If you haven't figured it out yet, trust me, this is your problem. If you used conventional oil with a cheap oil filter, dump that crap out. It leaves a thin layer of varnish on the lifters causing them to stick. That's what you're hearing. Don't listen to the morons that say, your truck will run fine, it's just what they do. No it's not. Your truck will have more torque and sound smooth and quite. Spend a few bucks on some Mobil One 5-30 weight, full synthetic oil with a Mobil 1 filter, "Ex Performance" is what I use, but not necessary. When I bought my 1995 Rodeo 3.2 V-6 in 2005 it had 119000 on it and was clacking like crazy. The owner thought something was broke in the engine. So I got it for a good price. Knowing what I know, I took the truck right home clacking like a blown motor. I change the oil and filter with Mobil one. Took it down the highway 6 miles. Turn around and drove back. When I pulled into my garage, the noise was completely gone. I still have my Rodeo, now with 246000 miles and it's as quite as a new Toyota. I also put a K&N air filter and a Flowmaster muffler on it. Sounds and runs fantastic. I change my oil every 9 to 10000 miles. Mobil 1 of course. Really, any good synthetic oil will do the trick. Enjoy the performance of your quite Isuzu Rodeo. They are a great and tough trucks. Vinnie from Colorado
Think I tried the synthetic and will try it again. Guess I really didn't observe it enough. But, good pointer. The only thing in mine is it burns 1.5 quart of oil in like 4K miles.
old video but it the valve lash adjusters being loose. They get varnished and stick down. Put in a qt of MMO (Marvel) and in a few days should go away. I had same exact noise in my 1996 Trooper, and it took 3 days for noise to go away. I prefered the MMO as it will stay in the oil and keep cleaning till you change it, seafoam may also work but will evaporate out. I used 4 qts of 15w-40 Valvoline with 1 qt MMO. I will leave it in till the next regular change.
Oil Lifters ! I have 900.000 km on my trooper 6vd1 3.2, bought back in 2001 and still running strong. But had to change the auto transmission to a manual...
telltale sign of valvetrain noise compared to bottom end noise is the rate of the ticking. if you watch the harmonic balancer you can judge if the noise happens 1 to 1 with it's rotation or 1 to 2 (half the speed) which indicates valve noise. try changing the oil more frequently, do it after 500 miles 3 times then try switching to synthetic, if it doesn't help you may need lifters or an adjustment.
It's always the timing belt. Mine was stretched an inch or so but still kept time. Good luck , taking all the front of the motor off. It takes a Honda schematic to set the belt nub correct. Mark all the gears before taking them off
I just bought one same year same engine, it has the same sound. I've been looking around for an answer too. The only thing I've found is the timing belt tensioner going bad causing the timing belt to slap around but the video's I saw of that sounded different.
Run sea foam in the crank case as instruction on the can says! This will clean sticky lifters and the engine oil passages resulting in a quieter and smother running engine. Also run it in your gas tank to clean and lube the whole fuel system and injectors and cylinder heads and valves. Bad belts and bad pulley bearings can produce taping, clicking and even knocking and squiling noise. I hope this helps!!
I also have an isuzu 1995 for many yr. now, my has the same noise, the noise is normal for the 3.2L v6 engine, remenber tha the vavels are auto self adjust and the noise is coming form there. I was told by a certified mechanic of the isuzu.
+Osvaldo Rodriguez my 1995 isuzu rodeo 3.2l v6 does the same thing and was previously owned by my father and he bought it 4 years old, and he said it has made that noise since he bought it in 99 and it still runs strong, but should i have anything to be aware of?
EASY FIX........... Put about half of can of sea foam in NEW oil and drive it around.... Floor it... let it bounce off the rev limiter a few times.. The lifter get clogged. Put it some 10-40w in it and you should be fine. I changed my lifer but it was a pain. Cams have to come off, timeing belt, ect.....
Hey folks, great info onnthis posts... But heres MY thing: I own a Rodeo 95 3.2 v6 myself and it was doing that noise for like 6 months now, last night we were on the highway and suddenly starts to slow down, try to gas but didnt respond, and then it turned itself off, i try to start it again but it just wont start, thought it was like the fuel pump or filter, but a friend of mine said that is the timing belt, we are going to change it tomorrow but im SCARED that could be in fact the timing belt and the engine gots destroyed on the inside... Does anyone now it this engine is an "interference" engine? bcz that means that most likely the engine is ripped off....
When we first got our rodeo, we had a non lifter tick which turned out to be the water pump. The pump's bearings punched holes all over the timing belt. We were lucky it failed 4 blocks from home. from what I read, it is NOT an interference engine. The timing belt can be a pain since you need 5 foot breaker bars to get the main pulley bolt broke loose.. (been there, done that)
gorerotted664 its a non interference engine my 98 rodeo with a 3.2 v6 just did the exact same thing as urs i was going down the highway at 70 miles an hour and it started to slow down i was able to put it in 3rd and get it to the next exit by driving on the side of the highway waited 4 hours for a tow truck got it to the shop i use and they said it was timing
That is clogged oil jets. Use mystery oil to break through that clog and it should start to not make that noise once you change the oil after using the mystery oil.
I have a 96' Isuzu Rodeo making the same noise, It sounds like something trying to get out of the engine. Started on the highway, power decreased and could only go 30 mph, then decreased to 15 mph. tried to give it gas and bogged it down, got it off the highway and in a truck stop in PA off I-81 Exit 100, the Pilot there. if anyone can help please do. Been here since last Friday, today is 2/23. on a Emergency trip to Massachusetts and have to get there ASAP.
I have a 95 rodeo also , with rebuilt motor in it, 70k miles of anyone is interested in purchasing the truck, which is in good condition, I put leather seats ,TV, system and lowered it also, so if anyone is interested it's available. message me
Get a full service, plus get your timing and power steering belts tighten up. Mine sounded better when I put some Castrol 10-40W oil,got minor service. But looks like it could do with a tune up as well.
Did you ever find out what that is? I have a 95 honda passport (same everything different badges) with the 3.2 v6 and I have just about exactly that same noise in the same area of the motor
It’s more than likely your valve lifters knocking, Isuzu’s are notorious for developing lifter knocking and its more annoying than it is damaging so I wouldn’t worry about it
Here is what fixed mine (only for a short while, then It comes back).. marvel mystery oil... add one quart of marvel in place of 1 quart of oil. Once the hydraulic lifters start sticking, they will continue to want to stick. Wife has driven hers for years ... just a ticking happily down the road. tough truck?!?!? yeah right... till the frame rots out.. wife loves her Isuzu's.. but this is our last one. Every one we have owned (we have owned quite a few), the frame rots away. I kept replacing her troopers with newer ones since she LOVES that it is designed for shorter people.
Live in NYC/NJ area and '95 truck has a lot of rust as well. Guess it's not worth keeping right? I mean I don't want to be driving down the road and something will fall off, especially suspension components!
Late to game but I just did a top end rebuild on this engine. This is the SOHC version of the engine, it has hydraulic lifters that can make noise if they’re clogged up or you’re low on oil. I understand the DOHC is not the same
If the noise goes away at high rpm's, then it will be your Hydrolic Timing belt tensioner. Just had to replace mine. Got'er done but it was a bi@*&. Harmonic Balancer has to come off just to get the timing belt covers off
Leave it, all the sound is are the lifters knocking. The sound will not cause damage to the car. Nearly all Isuzu’s with that engine have the same issue
@Rob Zombeh yea, a year later and i see that now, but its still not a rod knock, its the lifters, these engines all do that, or at least all that ive seen. like the person above my first reply said, a thicker oil should quiet the sucker a bit, if not all the way.
my truck makes that same noise, but one time my battery died (cuhz I constantly mess with subs) and I hooked it up to a charger and believe it or not for some reason it took the "knocking" noise away!!! I can't remember if it was all the way but enough not to hear it and me noticing it. I took it off charger while truck was on and system was off and slowly the truck started making the noise again. I'm not a mechanic or electrician but I think it has something to do with the rodeos electrical system, cheap wires mabey, who knows, try and connect a battery charger to see if it makes difference, bet it will even a little bit
I have a 1995 Isuzu 3.2 V6 and I know Exactly what the sound is coming from. In short your Pistons are tapping your intake and exhaust valves as it cycles. This started when I bought it, now mine has over 250k miles and it still makes the click click click. Its completely harmless to the engine as far as I know. hope that answers your question.
Get a full service, plus get your timing and power steering belts tighten up. Mine sounded better when I put some Castrol 10-40W oil,got minor service. But looks like it could do with a tune up as well.
7 years later! I have the same motor and this is what it sounds like sometimes. It's goes away, it's the trooper lifestyle!
Thats true...I have to say the same thing...but depending on the oil you put and aditives the sound goes away
Hydraulic lifters in these engines no matter what people say. And yes, yours are sticky. My Trooper 3.2 1995 do the exact same thing and gets quiet after a couple of minutes and/or a bit of RPM´s. 20 year master mechanic here, I agree with this guy.

I just by my and is making the noise but only when is cool one is Hot the noise is goine
I will do what u said i hope can fix my problem
Can you pm me, I have almost the same issue and have a few questions... TUANKS!
If noise goes away when warmed up, could be mechanical injector noise. Especially when cold...

Mine has been ticking for 30 years. I love the sounds of the tick, it’s the lifter mostly on the passenger side. 😢😮😅
I miss the ticking sound when my rodeo isn’t running. I have a 93 and mine has been ticking for 32 years 😢😅😮 and loving it.
Nate Dave I have the 1994 isuzu trooper they all sound the same tick tick the vasus 3.2 motor sounds that way.
I have the same 94 isuzu trooper...same sound!
Buenas ese motor gasolina

Rocker arm damage maybe oil staved my Iszuz rodeo sounded the same and now I have to go into the valves to fix

SnapperMan84 no Isuzu are really reliable cars and the ticking is not harmful to the engine
How to replace the timing belt Isuzu rodeo 1995 engine mark 6vd1
You need to check your belts and their lead check your valves dial them in
Its the timing belt tensioner it's no big problem your car will still work just fine with out doing anything
Bryson Nead but the noise gets louder when I get close the the rear left of the engine?
It’s also partly the lifters knocking its more annoying than it is damaging
Was it the hydraulic lifters?
I've same motor recent dead. Same noise It was the conection fluffy behind a pistón connection with viela. All Isuzu has this condición.
EASY FIX........... Put about half of can of sea foam in NEW oil and drive it around.... Floor it... let it bounce off the rev limiter a few times.. The lifter get clogged. Son los impulsadores o amortiguadores de las valvulas

yeah soposably it goes away
But it only goes away when your
On the road because it's the 24 valve

Did you ever figure it out? Having the same problem right now.
the 24 Valve is like Diesel
Amigo saludos de Ecuador tengo un problema se me w dan cogadas las rpm de repente
I have a 95 rodeo also , with rebuilt motor in it, 70k miles of anyone is interested in purchasing the truck, which is in good condition, I put leather seats ,TV, system and lowered it also, so if anyone is interested it's available. message me

Did you ever get it fixed? Mine makes the same noise.
What was the issue?
Refraxon thicker oil fixed mine.
It’s your lifters knocking, the sound will do no damage to your car thicker oil may help if it annoys you

Here is what fixed mine (only for a short while, then It comes back).. marvel mystery oil... add one quart of marvel in place of 1 quart of oil. Wife has driven hers for years ... just a ticking happily down the road. tough truck?!?!? yeah right... till the frame rots out.. wife loves her Isuzu's.. but this is our last one. It's just a oil issue my 94 did the same thing for a bit
High oil pressure?
bye the way the 3.2 do not have hydraulic valves they have to be adjusted every 150.000 miles along with timing belt.
Good to know,I get achattering from mine didnt know I could adjust the lifters
Wrong, they can’t be adjusted
Richard L. Correct. Not adjustable on the 6dv1 engine which is what this is.
nope the OEM manual says non-adjustable

I think this is just lifter tick.
Did you ever find out what this was?
my mom had one its normal
It’s just the lifters knocking around my moms did the exact same thing it doesn’t damage the car hardly at all
It’s a rod knocking
Zachary scott Smith nope. Oil is the issue on these particular engines. A thicker vescocity oil solved my issue immediately same for many others.
Please correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think dual overhead cams have rods
@Rob Zombeh yea, a year later and i see that now, but its still not a rod knock, its the lifters, these engines all do that, or at least all that ive seen. like the person above my first reply said, a thicker oil should quiet the sucker a bit, if not all the way.

Although you are correct that it is harmless I believe it is the valve lifters and not the pistons and valves making the sound
Ecm
Buen día desde Venezuela tengo una isuzu rodeo motor 3.2 año 95 y donde puedo conectar el escáner
you need to adjust your valves its not hard and run some bestline additive that will fix the problem my rodeo did the same thing, not anymore!!!!!
just joking hydrolic lifetrs
change the motor oil
Usually number one main bearing. Very serious!
