      Pluk pluk I’m 16 and grew up pretty poor so I grew up around vhs and watching movies on box TVs, I actually really do live the aesthetic besides the obsolete technology, don’t care much for modern trends either, I wish it was still like the 90s and I wish i around during that time

      WestKraven | I used to think like you do and I’m not even that much older. It’s great that time has moved forwards and things have gotten easier. Many things are much more widely available than they ever were and that’s great. Going back is not always as it’s chalked up to be.

    2:17, another problem with the Bolex H16 is there's no way to reliably synchronize audio because the spring mechanism wouldn't maintain a consistent frame rate. This is made even worse by the fact that it can only record for thirty seconds at a time, so you would be struggling to sync up audio with hundreds of 30-second takes if you were trying to shoot a feature-length movie. This is why all of the audio in the movie Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter was dubbed in post.

      Mr. Bump 2.0 But it doesn’t look very clear, almost as if the footage was upscaled from 480p. He did start shooting in widescreen 480p for 100-105 until the episodes were HD. My guess is that he experimented with a widescreen mode option on the HVX.

    James' take on cameras and equipment is really refreshing. Too many filmmakers/UA-camrs are too eager to jump into 4K cams or get new film equipment for no other reason than to have the newest gadgets. Really it's all about the storytelling and honing your craft with what works for you.

    Most camera videos are a total geek-out on tech specs, and I appreciate that this is more focused on the actual use of the cameras. Don't get me wrong, I love me some camera nerd talk but ultimately the tech serves the art of photography and filmmaking.

      @adam nelson Well yeah, a phone is never going to replace DSLRs or cinema cameras (though funnily enough you can now replace a cinema camera with a DSLR if are willing to accept some limitations). Phones have pretty much wiped out the point and shoot and camcorder market though.

    Thanks for sharing your cameras. I also own a GH5 and that same 17.5mm lens. I also don't shoot in 4K all that often. Honestly, it shoots such great HD that 4K is almost not necessary. I also recently got myself an AF100 on eBay, and I love it.
    I'm looking forward to seeing the next film.

    Great video. My family had one of those RCA rigs that i used to shoot stop motion movies on. Stretching the usefulness of your tools was what made the process so interesting back then. You're the man, avgn.

    Damn, tape extender is awesome. We just used to connect camera to TV, play footage from it on TV and record it on normal VHS

    Great video! As an amateur shooter / UA-camr and camera nerd myself it was entertaining to see your journey via the equipment you used to record.
    I'm grateful I live in an era where recording tech is both high quality and readily available, but I'm also a bit jealous that I didn't get started earlier in life like you did.

    It's so cool to see you had the same JVC camera my family used and still have! In all of my almost 25 years i had no idea the tape extender used a AA battery, i always wondered how it always automatically extended the VHSC tape without pressing anything lol

    That Hi8 Sony camera is still in my studio closet! I got mine in 2000 I think. Man.... that camera traveled with me and recorded every artist that recorded for my Sudden Impact Series. I learned a lot about your history. You didnt curse once :)
