An early masterpiece by Saint-Saens here beautifully realized by Kliegel and Thiollier, with great nuance and elegance. This Naxos recording has equally fine recordings of the 2 Cello Sonatas, also masterpieces. Everyone who loves music ought to get this Naxos CD- it will provide you with endless musical pleasure! Repeat hearings deliver new insights with each hearing. thank you for posting this wonderful piece!
I agree. Good cd. Naxos also did a good recording of Saint Saens piano trios. Now all they have to do is record all the symphonic poems, including Phaeton this time, in top quality performances and my cat will start laughing. Not that I actually have a cat.
This is among my favorite recordings of the Suite in D minor Op. 16. It is presented on a disk with similar outstanding performances of Saint-Saens 2 Cello Sonatas, both great works. Every music lover should have that disk in their collection; wonderful examples of Saint-Saens genius in Chamber music. thank you for posting.
The opening/closing melody of the romance movement starting at 10:30 always reminds me of the credits theme of the ITV Sherlock Holmes tv series made in the 1980s. There's a lot of great little melodies tucked away in Saint Saens' music. But the complete pieces aren't always the best because they can fall flat or lose all their expression when they go needlessly virtuosic...first violin sonata comes to mind...or needless runs up and down the piano during piano concertos. I think Saint Saens wrote best for the piano when it was in the accompanist's role.
Is there any chance you could upload Saint-Saëns Cello Sonatas played by Thiollier? I love your channel! Thanks for sharing soooo many beautiful pieces
Thank you very much for your kind and appreciated words (and for subscribing to my channel!). As you can see, I’ve uploaded the Saint-Saëns’ s Cello Sonata No. 1, performed by Kliegel and Thiollier.

Sadly, the cello is overpowered by the piano in this recording.
@@makeamericagreatagainkillt8906 Nope. Must be your playback.

So masterpiece❤
ame esta pieza, perfecta para dedicársela a alguien especial
Wunderschöne Musik, ich habe Saëns neu für mich entdeckt. Warum nur wurde er zu Lebzeiten so angefeindet?
Nice! I like more this version only with piano than that with orchestra.
I totally agree.
