- Thank you if you watched to the end of the video. And thank you for always supporting me. This was a really difficult decision to make but it's definitely for the best. And I'm just so grateful to be in a position where I can actually decide to make this change.
I know that English Literature is the right subject for me to be studying :)

I have a question. What can you use a Lit degree for? I have been exploring options but I am not sure what I want to be, but I am beginning to like Lit.
Henrietta Anne Ele S so after graduating I’m working in PR cause I realised I liked communications. There’s honestly so much you can do after Lit. There’s teaching, research, journalism, law , communication. The degree is very versatile and more importantly Literature really make you look at the world from a different perspective so even If post graduating you don’t work in that field you gain very strong soft skills
Just listening to how you articulate yourself about your Oxford rejection shows how much you have matured since high school.
I was actually really surprised when you picked theology since you have always loved English literature and enjoy reading/writing. I am glad you decided on this path and I hope you find much success in it. :)

When I was 6 I decided that I wanted to be a history teacher. So when I finished high school and went on to study history... I hated it! Absolutely hated it! So I dropped out and had a huge identity crisis, who was I if not a history teacher?!
Someone told me that speech therapy is an interesting thing to study so I did that for a year but it wasn't my passion. So I dropped out again and studied social work. I liked it well enough and finished it, but also knew that it wasn't my passion.
While studying social work, I volunteered to show prospective students the school and give them information about the course. I loved doing that so much! It made me realise that what I wanted to be was a teacher, the subject didn't matter that much to me. So after thinking about it for a while, I decided to go with distance education and become an English teacher.
I'm now in my final year, already work as an English teacher and love every second of it. Doesn't matter what road you take, as long as you get where you want/need to be.

Dear Ruby, I dropped out of university three times ( before understanding that some major work had to be done with myself if I wanted to feel good again ). Five years of therapy and now I'm registering again in the course that I hope will lead me to my dream job and most importantly my dream self. Still now I am afraid of that stigma, to be seen as the "dropper", an old 27 years old student who try it one more time...so thank you for sharing that this stigma is not a definition of who we are, and that sometimes it can be a huge opportunity for growth and change instead! ♥️

marija Hello! I would suggest trying to get work experience or an internship and building experience around the area you’re interested in. Not to self promote but I’m currently doing a YT series on getting into publishing which might be able to help.
Claire Fenby I’m currently studying for my BA in English Language and Literature in hopes to work into publishing! At the moment I’m taking a critical approach to literature course (my first literature course since starting college) and even though it can be brutal at times, I love it!

ASMR Ink Studying English Literature (like any other degree really) is A LOT of work but I’m very lucky to only ever have had book related jobs so I guess it paid off in the end. Good luck! If you need any advice just let me know.
When you mentioned that you have a yarning for the subject English, I related to you. I feel like I am meant to study history its like a calling. My school guidance counsellor has told me that it is a dying subject and that I should not study it at university. However, I do not care. I want to major in History and no matter what people say I am going to go through it. I completely understand you on this point.

i switched from informatics/software engineering to literature/linguistics after 2 years, best decision of my life. i hope everything turns out well for you too

Those two years are when they give the fundamental knowledge, you have a LOT of catching up to do.

@YoshiPeach Mario nah, in fact I'm all the way opposite - in my opinion scientific specialities are more complex and factual than arts. I, myself hold degrees for both - information technologies and linguistics.
However I'm a 100% believer that transferring courses works only with similar subjects - like linguistics - philosophy and vice versa.
And when we're talking about jumping around from faculty to faculty, from arts to sciences and back in the middle of course, there is the minimal chance of success in either profession.
One should be an exceptionally talented or focused student to sort out what the hell is going on starting as far as third year into the course.
I knew of your big love for English ever since you were prepping for A levels and when you switched, I was genuinely surprised. I thought that it was a new discovery and I was excited for you.

Been there, done that! I was studying Game art for 2 years, which was all fine. But I decided to pursue law, so i dropped out of game art and switched to law. I think a lot of people change courses, i find comfort in knowing others did it too haha.
Psychology is always a winner for me- literally learning how humans work it’s so important
I have wanted to learn psychology for about 4 years now as i have suffered from depression in the past and i a am autistic (diagnosed last yr). But unfortunately i cant switch majors now as i am in final year of engineering
Maybe after your current degree, you do a conversion masters in psychology? You'll learn the same stuff as an undergrad but the course is shorter.

I feel like there’s not enough emphasis placed on changing courses and/or uni’s. Nobody actually talks about how easy and how 100000% okay it is to do so. As you say - dropping out has way too much stigma - every life is different - everyone needs different things and the course you’re taking may not be providing you with what you need - so it stands to reason that people who’ve dropped out shouldn’t be judged for it. If anything they should be commended for their courage, and ability to admit they made a mistake or even that they’re not certain they made the right decision at the start of uni. So massive kudos to you ❤️.
I went to a uni that wasn’t necessarily right for me because I knew I wasn’t going to get the grades to get into the uni that would be right for me. I really didn’t like it there but stuck out the year to see if it would get better - it didn’t. So I looked into alternatives. I was shocked to find out that I could actually change to another uni and start again as easily as sending a few emails, applying through UCAS and amending my personal statement to include the year at uni. I applied to the uni I wouldn’t have originally got the grades for with my grades from my year at my original uni and they said yes. I’m now going into my 2nd year at the new uni and I’ve never been happier. I’ve also met a good 10 or so people who changed university who are finding uni to be suiting them more now. It’s so strange that it’s not talked about - given how much happier people who do so are after changing.
What's it like switching course? Did you have take a year out to apply for UCAS and wait Till the next year or what ?
@@Dinosmash I completed my first year at my original uni (I didn't decide it wasn't right for me until Easter time) - then dropped out after receiving my marks for my 1st year exams. I applied through UCAS to my current uni with those marks. Then started my current uni course that Sept.
Its weird having done uni before because you know what to expect, but also not too bad because you know how to get the most out of the experience.
Ruby, never be ashamed for choosing how to live your life. You're amazing. Good luck with English Literature, you'll smash it.
As someone who changed course at university, massive well done for making your academic journey your own! I struggled with a LOT of imposter syndrome when I changed course, especially because I'm at a very competitive university where you get in because you're absolutely dedicated to your subject. So changing subject meant I felt like I was a bit of a fraud. But it was the best decision I ever made, and I absolutely adore my new subject (anthropology). No regrets. I hope you have a great second first year!

I have been reareally struggling after I chose the wrong major. When I joined college, I was really influenced by what others thought would be the sensible major and now it's been over a year and I'm just so...not the right fit here. I quit my first job as a teacher two months back because it was very very stressful and it was a really had decision to take but I got another job in teaching in a school I REALLY wanted. And it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t left. And I am really excited for you or anyone who is taking a step towards what they love.☺️
I totally understand that 'yearning' and 'more' feeling with literature that you're talking about.
I did my BA in Drama and Music but continued to read and love and explore literature. Then I did my MA in English and it was amazing! You can love lots of subjects! I now teach primary school children and love that too - but I'd still love to work with literature as well. Sometimes it just never goes away!
I dropped psychology for English Lit back in the day. Now I have an Ivy MA and an Oxbridge PhD, and am a college prof. There are no jobs and no money, but that's the same for pretty much everything. If you need to vent about Lacan or the New Critical Idiom or how to define intersectionality as a critical tool, message me.
The skills you used in philosophy and theology are similar to lit. crit, too, so you'll be aces, Ruby.
An oxbridge PhD? So is it from Oxford or Cambridge??

Never feel bad about changing your mind! I am currently at the end of degree in my third year, and i am going back to university after i graduate to do a post-graduate degree in my true passion - teaching! So never feel bad and do what you want to do, not what the world thinks! x

It was so crazy to me how concerned you were about "dropping out of your course" and starting a new one.....in the US it's so normal for college students to change their major two, three, four, or more times! I personally changed my major once after initially applying to my college and then twice after I started school!
Maddie O in england it’s a completely different system tho you choose a course and you just do that course you don’t choose classes to take ect ect you just do one course for 3 years you can’t take any other classes this is the equivalent to her moving unis in the usa it’s a bit of deal and a major change

I have been feeling uncertain about my choice of courses too. I am now studying Computer Science, but before my studies begun I almost switched to another course countless times. What brings me comfort is that every time I would inevitably come back to the idea that Computer Science is right for me, but the fact that I wanted to transfer so many times throughout the year just won't let me be... I just have this feeling that something isn't right. (anyone can relate?)

When you say that you're 'dropping out' , actually what you are doing is making the right choice for you. It's better to move to a course you will enjoy (though I know you said you enjoyed philosophy too), than being in a situation where you will always be asking yourself 'What if?' I admire your decision to going for something that fulfills you.

i'm in my first year of studying graphic/digital design! it's so so interesting and i really love it, but it's challenging because i'm 100% more used to more academic work. it's also quite hard because i was always used to "being the best at school", and it's really hard to compare your drawings to everyone else's and find yours ugly, when art used to be something only for myself, and which i was good at.
I've always felt like English literature would be perfect for you and I'm glad you made a decision you are happy and comfortable about! good luck girl I'm rooting for you! 💞💞💞

@@ratata365jokes on you she graduated 😂 and she said it was the best risk she’s taken in her life. also so many people have gone to Minerva university and are incredibly successful individuals. She’s graduating this month in fact with a degree in cognitive science and a minor in business. I think people were too quick to judge her at the time

I don't leave many comments but felt I had to because making a somewhat similar switch a couple of years back made my time at university unforgettable. I also really admire you for sharing a dilemma that I think a lot of us have - placing our identity into our studies and becoming fixated with the idea that to change your mind is in some way a 'failure.'

I love English literature so much!! I'm doing it at university. I've only just started doing it but I already know it's going to be one heck of a trip. I loved it at A level because of one specific teachers. He was so funny and qwerky. I've always loved reading books. There's just so much in reading and learning that some don't understand but I totally get you. You've made a great choice and I wish you all the best.😆☺👏
I haven’t watched the full video yet but I wanted to give you my experience of switching courses. I first did children’s nursing at the University of Southampton but I really didn’t enjoy it and I couldn’t see myself being a nurse so in April I switched courses to business management as I really enjoyed business at A Level. I have just started my 2nd year in business and I enjoy it so much more than nursing and I can see myself using this knowledge in my future career. Also in my first year in business I achieved 78% which I was really proud of and I could never of achieved by continuing nursing.
I am so so glad I took the leap to switch courses, as even though it was a stress at first, I love learning about business.

By the way...for Americans, you are just changing majors, not dropping out of school. People here switch majors all the time. No biggie!
I studied Food Technology at uni because I was so interested in food and science, after some years I knew it wasn't the path I wanted to continue my life with. Loved the lectures but didn't like the internships. Afterwards started working with kids with disabilities, now I have a bachelors degree in Food Tech, teaching degree and also doing a Masters in Special ed. Go with what makes you happy, what sparks joy in your life. I did the same thing and I feel so happy every day! You def made a great choice!
I wish I had the guts to transfer in the middle of undergrad - I stuck it out and finished with a mediocre degree, and now I’m studying something I love and wondering why I put myself through a course I didn’t enjoy, what a waste of precious years of my life! So good on you Ruby
Also your ability to distinguish what you enjoy from your passion shows a lot of emotional intelligence, it took me until I was a few years older than you to figure out how to listen to my own feelings and do what I loved rather than things that I was just okay with
I drop out of my course too, I did it in July, before the start of semester, i changed programs from International Business and Trade to Economics and i was so nervous too! I think the telling to your friends and family it's actually harder than changing the courses so i understand completly, the estigma is actually really heavy, because i think the perception from the people changes a little bit, which is completly ridiculous, I hope you really enjoy your new path, you seem to loved theology so much that this video catched me by surprise. I'm actually loving my new course (i find it so fascinating and i started to actually studyng my classes in the afternoon as soon as i arrive to home, because i find it really interesting, and this is something i've never had done before) and I'm sooo glad that i changed majors. So happy to hear the same from you Ruby!
Re-watching this video a year later - I wish I hadn't ignored the pang and yearning to change course and study English. I can't do university again so it's too late for me so if there's anyone reading this who's wondering should I/shouldn't I? Just follow your heart and do what feels right. Don't wait.

I’ve dropped out of my first course (linguistics) as well, so I can totally relate to your situation! I started studying Molecular Life Science last week and it suits me SO much better. I love linguistics but it’s not what I want to do as a job, it’s just really interesting and I see it as a hobby now☺️✨

I'm glad you made this decision and I am very proud of you for realizing that the course didn't suit you. And truly, I think it was so brave of you to talk about this.
instead of dropping out a course, i dropped out of uni last year. i felt so down, worthless and I didn’t know what to do with my life. I am currently at a completely different uni, studying international tourism management and I couldn’t be happier. Changes are hard, especially when they determine a big part of your life but you’ll will be fine, english literature is something that fits you so good.
i had to drop out of political science and take a gap to realise i actually want to do french! i think it’s super important to question your decisions and do what you feel is right :) wishing you all the best in your new course 🌸
It's funny how much of this rings true to my own roundabout journey to choosing music as my field. It's taken almost a decade, but I'm finally doing a violin performance master's and looking at how to turn that into a performance/musicology DMA. It really is so rewarding doing work that you know you care about, and that you can FEEL the love for every time you sit down to do it. Congrats on making this decision!

Yessss ruby!!! I’m so happy for you. The best thing you can do in life is to do what you enjoy the most. I’ve changed uni courses as well (from education studies to psychology and counselling) and it’s the best decision I ever made. Now in my second year of psychology and counselling at 21. No one has the same path in life and it’s okay to do stuff for you. Lots of love ruby xxx

That sounds like a really good choice! I realise it is a very different thing but I’m currently doing my GCSE’s and I feel similar about English literature, I always get excited for each class and I really enjoy writing essays and reading new novels and plays!
