The nurse weighed me, took my blood pressure, and heart rate and said the doctor will be with you in a moment. In a moment, the doctor came in, we talking about my prescription, whatever health issue I had, bla bla bla, and gave me a referral to get several types of blood tests. She also gave me a slip to give to the receptionist to book a follow up appointment. After that, I drove down the street, went to the lab for a blood test. The US economy is great due to the high prices attached to healthcare and law suits. Especially law suits, they are not really something productive, something that make life easy for people, but something that boost the economy. Great !!!

The neoclassical economist thinks asset prices represent wealth, but this isn’t true. When asset prices have fallen sufficiently, we start to think about what wealth really is. Second time around it’s a lot easier as we have been through this before. Where is the wealth in the economy? The Americans had thought rising asset prices represented real wealth, until the Wall Street Crash of 1929. They had trusted the markets to tell them what was going on in the economy, but this had proved to be a big mistake. They needed something new to tell them what was really going on in the economy and they invented GDP. GDP measures economic activity in the economy; the new items produced and sold every year in the economy. That’s where the real wealth in the economy lies. It may not be perfect, but it's the best measure we have and this is why global policymakers want to grow GDP. The everything bubble. They day of reckoning draws near. The vast body of economic literature confirms that unbridled capitalism, or laissez-faire capitalism, does not provide a level playing field in the marketplace with the most efficient balance of supply and demand for the benefit of society at large. To Enslave them. Then came the SSN's and birth certificates. Again. Too enslave them. And yet these people believe they are Free people and are fighting for freedom. I tell you, these people are brain damaged and the nations who want to live in here are foolish and ignorant just like the people who are already living in here. What J W Goethe meant by this quote is probably this: If the enslaved are aware of the fact that they are enslaved, the system is practically unsustainable and there are many good examples in history. The enslaved have strong incentive to rise against their slavers and the slavers have to guard them 24/7. There are big expenses for the slavers just to keep the slaves calm and the system has to break sooner or later. But if the enslaved believe they are free, they have no reason to rise against the slavers, since they don't know there are any slavers at all. Thus the slavers don't have to worry about their safety and all they need to do is to make sure the slaves still think they are free. Such a system is sustainable for eternity. Therefore the people are "more hopelessly enslaved", because there is no hope to be set free. As an example, we can take a dictatorship-like Cuba or Iran-and a democracy-like the USA or Germany. In Cuba, most people are angry and hate Fidel Castro, because they are aware of the fact that they are enslaved. People try to escape from Cuba and there were many attempts to kill Castro. This is clearly unsustainable, the communist goverment will cease to exist sooner or later.
Oh, American women WISH they had a few months off work after giving birth! A lot of women go back to work just a WEEK OR TWO after giving birth!!! Because their family would be homeless if they didn't.
I always say to people that as children, we are programmed.. As little boys , you are given car toys and trucks, and girls get Barbie and babies as toys.. I remember asking people about having electric or gas vehicles, and the majority preferred gas because of the noise it made, while electric would save money on fuel.. They still preferred Gas.. !? I couldn't understand their logic because i know a vehicle is not an extension of my being, and as long as it got me from A-B and saved money ,strategically, that would be the best option..!? 🤔
I am from New Zealand. Four years ago I had a bad accident. I barely survived. I needed medical care, physio, rehabilitation, physiological treatment, neurological assessments and treatment. I needed a lot of help for a long time. Even now I am still only working part time. Practically all my medical costs are free to me. The Govt pays my salary while I am unable to work. The Govt does all of this because it is better for the economy to keep the population healthy and able to work. It is also a fundamental right for people to have access to health care. For all these benefits, I lose the right to sue the person that caused my accident. That is not a problem to me because I don't need to sue anyone. I got the help I needed when I needed it without spending a fortune on legal fees and taking years to work through the legal system. Economically, it is better that money is spent on actual medical care rather than being wasted on lawyers.
Do you get it that a small elite decide what USA does? Always has, but the goodness amongst the masses is what kept it going. That populace is now at a breaking point, just as corporate greed is pushing its heights.
It’s sad knowing that I’m going to be in one of the very last generations to remember what it was like to be an American when we were a first world nation. Sorry kids, your shortsighted parents and grandparents screwed up and you get to live with the results.
almost. some things described are socialdemocratic reform politics which doesnt touch the core problem of capitalism but to soften the worst effects of private prporty max profit driven systems.
One in France a few year back, I had some sort of digestive ailment. I visited a private doctor a friend knew and managed a quick visit. At the end, when walking out, I asked how much it was. The doctors assistant looked and asked, how is what? I didn't try to get sick because it was free. Of course, everyone in France helped me for a fraction of a penny, but still, I had no urge to find a phantom illness to go back. What's phantom illness? The great capitalist pharma companies often hit on some chemical that does something obscure in the body. After months of testing, they find out the disease that it can modify, not even cure, but modify. There have been over 450 new diseases invented. So, American doctors get patients too. Everyone in that club is happy. That is not capitalism, right? If it is, it is quite criminal, taking people's wealth by stealth.
BRIC is the largest global trade group created and USA is not part of it. In fact BRIC has built a huge infrastructure for production which also creates a huge market as well by enriching South American Economy
There are all kinds of reasons why the global south/BRICS is the new geopolitical, financial, and economic superpower of the world, but perhaps the best reason is that everything is cyclical ... empires rise, then fall. It's been that way for eons. Nothing can stop time or these cycles ... perhaps its human nature!
So, I guess it's best to vote for one of the most corrupt individuals in history and sit back and rot because of cycles? Knowing what we know, that's possibly the stupidest thing ever.
Wolff is up there with Robert Reich as someone who can explain economics and has done a series of talks and interviews - all are excellent and penetrate the veil of ignorance on economic matters that permeates American culture and is entirely absent from Trump's experience, education, or insight. Trump’s level of naïveté* on international economics is even more isolating for America and its allies than anyone seems prepared to acknowledge. Wollf untangles it easily. * naïveté is the state of being naive. It refers to a lack of experience and sophistication.
For a country proud of its liberties, one would think individuals would have the right to be covered for all medical, dental, opthalmological, mental, and auditory health care. Instead, health care coverage has historically been defined by corporations. Additionally, health care providers must staff for the administrative waste necessary to comply with privately-created, government-sanctioned red tape. Come to think of it, doesn't the cozy relationship between government and private health insurance providers, big pharma, etc. make the system similar to one found under fascism?
The defining characteristic of autocratic regimes is their insistence on absolute supremacy. Throughout more than two thousand years of Chinese history, during times of strong imperial power, subjects often took pride in the idea that “All under heaven belongs to the emperor; all within the borders are his subjects.” Historically, those kings, emperors, officials and generals who expanded the empire’s territories were frequently glorified as national heroes. In contrast, the capitalist revolutions in the Western world aimed to oppose autocracy, rejecting the return of feudal autocratic systems under leaders like Napoleon, Hitler, and the Soviet Union. These revolutions gradually established and refined systems of democracy and freedom. It is within such systems that many small Western European nations have managed to maintain democracy, liberty, and independent prosperity. This is also why the Western world remains wary of China today and seeks to limit its use of Western technological advancements. The development path promoted by the Chinese government, often described as a “Chinese model,” is essentially a continuation of state monopoly and autocracy. Concepts like the “rise of China,” the “Chinese Dream,” and the “Belt and Road Initiative” are, in this new context, forms of territorial expansion under different guises. Those who engage in benign propaganda for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) should ask themselves: Do you truly believe that a stronger CCP will abandon its pursuit of supremacy and allow Western nations to continue their democratic and free systems? By observing how the CCP’s attitude toward Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and other South China Sea nations has hardened with its growing power, one can clearly understand why the Western world today is so vigilant and opposed to the CCP.
But it is not. China is the monster The West made! They gave it all the money in the world and all the technology. They educated their citizens....told them exactly how to supplant The West. The West were idiots, sowing the seeds of their own destruction, for short term profit.
Prof. Wolff does not engage in "propaganda" of the Chinese government, he talks about their economic successes so far, and their strategy and outlook. Which is impressive. Maybe they too will fade (they certainly have a knack for feeling national superiority) - for the next decades they are a force to be reckoned with. However they do not try to satisfy that with playing the war lords all over the planet.
I've come to the conclusion, the human systems running and ruling this planet is despicable. No wonder our Creator left this planet, with these words...Due to humans free-will and sin, this world is cursed now...
We have, no. HAD, everything we needed for Paradise on Earth. We squandered it. We are all human. We are all to blame. We will all perish together. We all deserve it, because we are all human.
America's trade economy is mainly based on 2 pillars: the "free trade" and the use of the dollar as international trade currency. Once you start with tariffs and counter-tariffs the free trade is gone and trade will go down dramatically. The last time the US tried this was with the Smoot-Hawley tariff act of 1930. Trade fell with 67% and a slowed economy turned into the "Great Depression", destroying most of the economy and destroying the lives of countless millions of americans. It took a world war to get the US economy back on it's feet. Secondly: the value of a currency is determined by the undrlying economy. At the moment the USD is sustained by many economies that use the dollar for trade. This use is going down very fast as countries are fed up with america's use of it's currency as a weapon and the stonger economies outside the USA. Half of the international trade is now done in euro's, rupees or yuans. International price quotes to non americans are now mostly done in euros. As there are 2 to 3 times as much dollars in circulation than the US economy itself can sustain this will lead to a great fall in value to even a collapse. That this will happen and will be accelerated by the new US administration is well known and most countries are preparing for this. New financial circuits in other currencies are being set up for international trade and, after decennia of selling gold, central banks and governments are buying up all the gold they can get as insurance against the value loss of the dollar. Banks and central banks worldwide are even remelting all the ounce based bars to kilogram bars to be ready for the new world system. Even the economic illiterate new presidend Trump (or his advisors) knows this. Proof is his threat out of the blue to attack anyone trying to undermine the USD as international trade currency. But his isolationist policies will only lead to an acceleration of the downfall.
He’s only talking about consumer goods, and no doubt China and India have a huge advantage based on cheaper wages and newer infrastructure. Perhaps he should mention who makes and services all of the automation equipment, oil refining equipment, etc. Hint, it’s not Russia, China or India. Next he seems to think Russias future is to sell oil to countries who are making Herculean efforts to vastly reduce their need for oil. Who does he think BYD is selling all those millions of EV’s to? Learn the difference between a social democracy and socialism. European countries are social democracies, not socialist. Meaning they have things like good infrastructure, universal healthcare, and a strong social safety net. In a socialist country, the government would own all of the means of production. Most European companies are indeed public or private, not crown corporations. Where crown corporations exist, they are often infrastructure companies. Utility companies, transportation, etc. the largest crown corporation I can think of is Equinor (Statoil), which is 67% owned by the Norwegian government. This has put Norway in the highly enviable position of having a Sovereign fund valued at more than $1.7 trillion for a population of around 5 million people.
He didn't say Russia's future, he said Russia's now. If Russia's only way to make money is gas and oil, it will do what capitalists do- everything humanly possible to block anything that slows down sale of oil and gas. The US didn't blow up a pipeline and become the largest producer of oil and gas on earth because it was the right thing to do. It was done for money.
The U.S. does not make the machines for industrial mass production either. For the most part they are made in Europe, maybe some in the U.S. Canada etc. Industrial sowing machines ? they come from Germany or Switzerland, and maybe from Taiwan, too. I know that Pfaff gave up on consumer sewing machines / sergers, but of course they still produce the ones for commercial use.
@ the US and Canada do make this type of machinery also, as does Europe, Japanese, Taiwan, etc. Even China makes a bunch of this. It tends not to be as high quality as Western made. Think micro-chips, for one.
The thing is though that it's NOT comfortable for probably most Americans!! I can't believe how many people have to work two jobs just to survive in the U.S., including families where BOTH parents work more than one job, how many people go bankrupt for a common health issue, how many people DON'T go to the doctor for even simple things because they can't afford it and then end up having huge life threatening issues because they didn't get early treatment, how many people have guns (and so MANY guns) because they're SO terrified of every little thing and SO fearful that someone might take what little they do have after slaving their entire lives for it, and of course how many people are killed by guns, including the NUMBER ONE cause of death for children!!, not to mention the appalling birth/mother mortality rate, the abject poverty of so many entire states (which also have some of the WEALTHIEST governors), the corruption and obscene wealth that controls all the politics, that so many people are HAVING to work into their 70's and even 80's just to survive, that a POC (ESPECIALLY a black person) is FAR more likely to be killed by police than a white person (especially a wealthy white person) and is FAR more likely to get an INFINITELY stiffer jail sentence than a white person (especially a wealthy white person), how objectively awful the public education system is, the power and control that extremist religions and total nutjobs have over almost everything, and on and on and on and on. It seems very much like a hell-scape, and not at all a "comfortable" life. Unless of course you are VERY RICH (and WHITE), and then America IS your playground, to do as you please, to poison and destroy and enslave (while spreading endless outrageous self-serving lies and propaganda) with virtually no push-back or consequences. I think Americans are just so used to suffering that they wear it like some kind of honour badge, clinging to the false hope that they TOO will one day become one of the very wealthy if they just work hard enough at their multiple minimum wage jobs (probably from having "land of opportunity" and "greatest country on earth" propaganda drilled into them every single day from birth on - not to mention never being exposed to ANYTHING that might inform them otherwise because they are woefully ignorant about the rest of the world or even their own country and the education system is poor at best for so many of them), and this horrible, hard, difficult belief in "individualism" instead of supporting each other, and "pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps" (which is impossible to do, it is the worst kind of oxymoron), instead of one of helping each other, and so on. This belief in "sink or swim", "dog eat dog", and full-throated admiration for the wealthiest (no matter how truly AWFUL they are) is just a cruel, hardscrabble, totally misinformed and misled existence.
It's not at all "comfortable". It's just the devil you know. Too many Americans are just so brainwashed, ill informed, badly educated, and deathly afraid of anything different or outside of their own borders (it's communism!! it's socialism!! it'll give black people a hand up!! it'll make women uppity!! I'll lose my guuuuuuunnnnnnsssss!!!) that they don't have the guts to make ANY changes.
The issue is not if China and India are buying oil and gas from Russia. The question is, how much are they paying for it. Now that Russia's market is, shall we say, constrained, they probably have to give those countries a pretty good deal. This is a problem for Russia, because their energy production sector is highly inefficient, and their cost of production is high.
I'd be interested to know what percentage of the American economy DEPENDS on war and what would happen if that chunk of the pie was brought to some "normal" size.
Not just weapons of war. America’s sale of small arms all over the world is astounding. It is the chief cause of the gangs and violence in Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, that fuels illegal immigration to the U.S. Yet with all the talk of border security, caravans, and walls, do you EVER hear American news outlets discussing the billions of dollars American small-arms manufacturer’s make on exports every year?
"While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free". Debs was one of my heroes. Regrads from Scotland.
For the record, I'm from Brazil, which in theory would be third world, but here we have free medical care, education, etc. Including medicines, such as insulin.
The most stable political-economic systems have a mixture of both captalism and socialism. Initiative has to be rewarded, and everyone needs to feel they have the opportunity to succeed. If you take away hope, that is where social problems start. One way or another, everything has to be paid for. “The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.” ― John Kenneth Galbraith

I'm a Canadian. This is what I did two days ago. I went to my doctor appointment, gave the receptionist my health card, sat down for 3 mins in the waiting area and was called in by a nurse. Gave them my health card, had my blood taken and peed in a cup and was out the door in 15 mins.
There were no fees, no insurance, zero costs. I will not get a bill in the mail, it will never cost me anything. They will just rename the minimum wage a maximum wage and it will then never be increased.
I have been proposing that for years and always get laughed at.
I've always believed that there should be a minimum difference between the highest and lowest wages in any company. So if the CEO wants a wage rise then everyone else has to get one too. Eg. The CEO in any company can't be paid more than 10 times the wage of any other person working in that same company. A maximum wage based on everyone else's wage. And that should apply to shareholders too!! There should never be anyone earning more than 10 times the wage of anyone else - nobody is worth that.

To break that cycle, we must take all shared infrastructures back into collective hands - run by the people, who work in them or use them, as co-ops. Co-ops that are fundamentally barred from being demutualized and sold off.

Universal health care, publicly funded higher education, paid family leave, etc. Just imagine the amount of human creativity that could be release if not for 'the man' requiring everyone work for their companies in order to qualify for only some of these benefits. Basically a modern form of slavery is the American economic system. We are holding ourselves back from expanding prosperity for all. And the underlying reason is our inability to let go of our enduring racism, the thinking that we would rather deprive ourselves rather than see the 'others' benefit. The legacy of slavery is still haunting us. But it is fixable, if we want to.

I'm an old man and owned a pickup truck most of my life, especially when I was younger. I hauled my firewood in it, manure for my garden, my dogs when I went hunting and my canoe when I went fishing. I worked in construction and had a tool box back there too. I see the trucks they build now with their short beds and back seats and wonder what the hell has happened. When I was driving a truck it was a utilitarian vehicle. You could put a sheet of plywood in it that was 4' x 8'. I rarely see pickup trucks carrying much of a load now. My truck didn't make me more of a man, it just helped me to live my life the way I wanted to live.
They're big now & driven to intimidate other drivers. Plus they're a blue collar status symbol. Many of the drivers are in the unofficial "uniform"- camo cap, wraparound shades, goatee, camo jacket. Gun rack in the back window.
So impressive, lol.
Capitalism ruined pickup trucks by marketing them to suburban wine moms and shunning their most reliable customer base: the working class. Trucks used to be cheap and could actually perform tasks back in the day, now they're just half of a minivan on wheels with none of the space or gas mileage and all of the rollover risk. Even the "mid-size" trucks they sell now are these massive massage chairs on wheels, it's insane. And if you want to look for an older truck, good luck because those are getting extremely expensive as demand for them rises and supply dwindles. Currently looking for a '90s Toyota pickup, regular cab, and trying to get a good one for under $10,000 is like mining for gold.

Americans need to understand, you DO pay for medical treatment in Europe, it's called TAXES, in UK it's called NI.
And it is much much cheaper than paying American private medical insurance.
@@chrysalis4126 That is true. My daughter's in-laws are from London. Her FIL had a pacemaker put in in London under the NI, and when he visited here in California after a long flight and collapsed, it was suspected that something was wrong with his pacemaker. HOWEVER, my point is that his medical records in the UK were so organized that the hospital here in California was able to obtain them within hours, to determine the type of pacemaker he had. The only hospital that could read that software was in Las Vegas, who immediately transferred it to the hospital in California.
His mother has been hospitalized in the UK in the asthma, allergies and COPD and treated well under the NI.
We like to think asset prices represent wealth, but the real world brings us to our senses eventually.
The truth always comes out in the end.
You spend your time pushing up asset prices only to discover this wasn’t real wealth after all.

The vast body of economic literature confirms that unbridled capitalism, or laissez-faire capitalism, does not provide a level playing field in the marketplace with the most efficient balance of supply and demand for the benefit of society at large. For example, finite resources are abused, oligopolies or monopolies and barriers to market entry become prevalent, and innovation is stifled. Too many people are taught by today's politics in the United States that all "socialism" in all its forms is bad. Big money talks in its own interest in today's politics. While America is supposed to be the LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD but yet everyone there is in total complete DEBT. The medical system is not free, the School system is not free and severely overcharges the students for longer than normal education. Which is what Charlie Kirk is adamant on speaking of. The women in America who are SEVERELY IGNORANT on the being Ms. independant, I'm a boss lady, I'm a queen, girls run the world attitude are being used for the Women's suffrages movement to help out companies and corporations make way more money and drive wages cheaper because now there is a market where men and women are now working and it the government to make way more taxes because now that the woman is working instead of the man the government benefits off of two incomes instead of one. And these corporations which pretty much control America aka corpotacracy, pay the politicians to pass laws in their favor. And women wonder why they get mistreated when they are pregnant with child and can't get what the polish women get which is time off during their pregnancy. Women in Poland can get up to almost two years off during their pregnancy and can still have their jobs when they are done weening the child while the woman in America possibly three to six months tops and probably won't have their jobs when they come back. Heck I've seen them work with big bellies in major companies. Talk about enslavement. But that's capitalism. And ignorant people do not understand it.
"All Americans are SLAVES and do not even know it. They believe they are Free but have no idea they are not."
They are "DEBT SLAVES" Paying off the government's Debts. Why do you think that when they created the Federal Reserve back in 1913 that they passed the income tax law illegally and unconstitutionally and then the the internal revenue Tax building was created. To Enslave them. Then came the SSN's and birth certificates. Again. Too enslave them. And yet these people believe they are Free people and are fighting for freedom. I tell you, these people are brain damaged and the nations who want to live in here are foolish and ignorant just like the people who are already living in here.
What J W Goethe meant by this quote is probably this:
If the enslaved are aware of the fact that they are enslaved, the system is practically unsustainable and there are many good examples in history.

AOC is no socialist IMO.
This is a very accurate analysis.
Agreed
almost. some things described are socialdemocratic reform politics which doesnt touch the core problem of capitalism but to soften the worst effects of private prporty max profit driven systems.
I talked to someone in Finland. They said “we don’t worry about health care cost or studies”. But they do talk about taxes, seldomly.
BRIC will need a lot more than South America. lol.
You are correct. BRICS is going to be the winning strategy against Western countries..
…species come and species go.
Come to think of it, doesn't the cozy relationship between government and private health insurance providers, big pharma, etc. make the system similar to one found under fascism?
this guy knows his stuff.
It’s the Final Countdown!
Who is our creator?

The world has been waiting for a good leading country.
China is stocking up on oil because they know we as Mericans are too stupid to stop being dependent on it.
Life is so comfortable in America that we try to ignore any other system outside of the current one. Who is listening to Wolff? Nobody.
At 2 minutes & 21 seconds, the trucks have Slovenian plates. People everywhere just have to be in fashion, in the west, image is everything.
Made in Hollywood lifestyle.. 😊
In China, money/image is everything.
Richard Wolff, always spot on analysis. So many good points.
This was educational for me. Thanks. Sharing it with a friend.
Makes me dizzy to think this through ..😮💨
I'd be interested to know what percentage of the American economy DEPENDS on war and what would happen if that chunk of the pie was brought to some "normal" size.
The US is the only country where war is an industry.
Ask the countries that want the latest weapons. They love our military
Not just weapons of war. America’s sale of small arms all over the world is astounding. It is the chief cause of the gangs and violence in Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, that fuels illegal immigration to the U.S. Yet with all the talk of border security, caravans, and walls, do you EVER hear American news outlets discussing the billions of dollars American small-arms manufacturer’s make on exports every year?
dont get me wrong but on 8:27 the photo saw the leader of the Greek communist party (KKE) Dimitris Koutsoubas
"While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free". Debs was one of my heroes. Regrads from Scotland.
2:40 that a Citroen, not a Fiat
Love this guy❤🇿🇦
Sounds like unwittingly strengthening BRICS, or is it not 👀?
For the record, I'm from Brazil, which in theory would be third world, but here we have free medical care, education, etc.
Including medicines, such as insulin.
The most stable political-economic systems have a mixture of both captalism and socialism. Initiative has to be rewarded, and everyone needs to feel they have the opportunity to succeed.
If you take away hope, that is where social problems start.
One way or another, everything has to be paid for.
