I’ve written to Professor Wolff before about a very minor matter; I was blown away that he actually took the time to respond and assuage my concerns in a very thoughtful manner. He’s an absolutely magnificent human being who I feel honored to learn from at a distance.

He's been hot on youtube for awhile! Go follow Democracy At Work, he has great guests and even has his wife on sometimes to delve into family psychology + capitalism.
In the Dominican Republic, professor Wolff is listened to and respected. His insights about what his own country is facing is revealing. Not only does he bring light into domestic situations, but also he clarifies about what's really is going on in Russia and in the Middle East, having as reference point his honesty and wisdom.

Taking complex concepts and expressing them in simple language that is digestible to a wide audience takers a certain level of mastery. I really love the clear and intentional language behind Wolff.

It's a privilege to listen to what Richard Wolff has to say; his analysis and words of wisdom in these difficult times I find helpful because they chime with my inchoate ability to articulate my disquiet.
I'm not all that impressed, frankly. He claims that we can't control reality, and he's right about that, if one conceives "control" is the ability to make reality dance to our commands. But we certainly can and do affect reality, often in detrimental ways. The political systems we implement, the technological inventions that we proliferate (or not), and the cultural discourses we shape can and do affect real people's real lives (and deaths). For someone with such epistemological nihilism, he certainly likes to hear himself opine.
He said it is over but really it's only just about to begin. Americans are about to go through massive spiritual awakening through extreme hardship. It is very exciting watching your country grow.
I've seen Richard Wolff on this channel before, but this is definitely the best interview - relaxed, convivial, and genuinely thought-provoking. Thank you so much!
Convivial. I had to look that one up. There is also a French restaurant in Washington DC named that. I jut saw that when I looked the word. Never been there or to Washington.
My husband is getting his double masters in teaching and economics. He's actually becoming a history teacher. He wants to combine history and economics and is appalled that history teachers don't understand economics, and economics teachers don't understand history.
I'm 72 and was often appalled at the narrowness of many teachers of my own children. Some don't know much about life, tend to socialise with teachers and fall prey to pomposity because they are used to children taking everthing from the teacher's mouth as gospel. Some can't spell. Good luck to your husband and may he always have a learning attitude.

Thank you for interviewing Mr. W olff. I am a black female, 70 years old. I appreciate Mr. Wolff's thought on the' savages'. The fact that you have never thought about the annihilation of Native Americans shows great ignorance and great entitlement. Please read about this subject. Terrific guest. Richard Wolff is the best at putting all we are living through in the historical context which I have also been consumed with all my life to the detriment of family relationships which is very difficult but necessary in order to live with eyes and ears wide open. Thank you so much for having Professor Wolff on.
Wolff always blames "capitalism " when we've never had free markets. Without freemarkets, you can't judge it. He's spent a career on campuses preaching to the "victims" about billionaires that, for the most part, we're chosen and advanced by our government.
Wonderful respect for Professor Wolff. The man is compassionate and reasoning and enlightened. I loved his allusion to Magritte. Brilliant man. Always I delight to view him.

listening to this guy seriously depresses me and makes me despair for the future of our nation. decade after decade politicians have greased their hands in tandem with a wealthy minority and consistently undermined the prosperity and integrity of the country as a whole. at some point the house of cards will come tumbling down, and those of us who got left behind will be left with the peices
You know you have a vote, right? If you can't marshall that vote against "a minority" then what are you doing? And if you can't, maybe it isn't a minority making the choices but a majority? In which case, that's the issue - not the minority.

And just like all the other hegemonic empires of centuries past, this one's ruling class is VEHEMENTLY convinced that their own empire is special and different than all of its predecessors and is therefore inherently eternal and invincible. They can't comprehend the possibility that it could all come unraveled beneath their feet, let alone that they are causing it with their own inherently unsustainable short-sighted and destructive actions. To people who have lived with impunity their entire lives and become deeply accustomed to it, downfalls and disasters are things that only happen to other lesser people. They can't fathom being personally affected by the consequences of their own actions because they preside over a system that was built to insulate them from consequences and pass them onto their own population or the elites and populations of other countries. It's just a game to them.
@DissidentB I might add that the New Chinese Empire will take the place of the USA as holder of international assets. China will do to to the USA what the US did to the British Empire, and buy up the dogs at knock down prices. Without firing a shot.

What no one acknowledges is that the immigrants desperate to get into the country are the best and brightest, the most ambitious and energetic and hopeful of the impoverished communities they come from. We should recognize their willingness to risk everything in order to improve the lives of their families for the heroism it is.
@@KathrinWagner7953 Not Hero’s but cowards just like all the immigrants before. Unwilling to fight for their communities back home so they fled to a place where they were strong enough to overcome the indigenous population without much struggle. It took another generation or two to get up the courage to fight the cause of Independence to make this land its own country. The immigrants are just more cowards who flee because they will not stand up for change within their own countries. Not the best and brightest they will always succeed in any community or country. They are for the most part just normal people willing to go wherever they can find a way to make a living. The United States is the most expedient now, if another opens their border to illegal immigration with better opportunities they would flee to there next. It is just the way it is, do not make it into something it’s not.
The brainwashing doesn’t begin in university. I recall in high school, I read a book on the Red River Rebellion in Manitoba led by Louis Riel. In the book, he was a hero fighting for his people, but in our textbooks, he was a madman and a traitor. When I wrote about the Louis Riel I had discovered in my library book, I was flunked on my history exam. When I complained, I was told the exam is based on the textbook, not on the reading I had done on my own. That was 60 years ago. Today, there are streets and institutions named for Louis Ruel, he is a Canadian hero, and his execution by the government is regarded as having been unjust.
The very founding of Am3ric4 is completely different in the European telling. We scraped up all the religious zealots, the criminals, the insane, the prostitutes and we put them on ships to Am3ric4 to get rid of them. The French handcuffed a criminal to a prostitute - married them and sent them to Louisiana to populate it. I'd hardly say we are proud of our actions, but the interesting point is how they differ from the American version.
@@Papawcanner Every country lies about its past to look good OR to look the victim of something unjust. I am British by birth and my God do we do it. But Am3ric4 is unique that I know of in having an entire foundation myth. Its also unique that 95% of the population - the global supremacy of the US forms part of their personal identity, maybe this is just a function of becoming a global empire in the age of mass communication? But most Am3ric4ns can not be in any way objective about the end of empire as it is a personal attack upon their identity. This is and will continue to cause many problems.
Wow small world. My mother went to school with Louis riel great grandson I believe. I also found it fascinating when I learned about him in Manitoba school. Then went to Ontario and learned at a monument that he was a traitor and hung for treason. Blew my young mind. Louis riel day is coming up here in Manitoba soon ! Haha 😅
A friend of mine worked for a corporation and wrote seasonal holiday copy for them and was always praised for her well researched articles. However when she wrote about Labor Day she had the most extraordinary backlash and censorship, because „We don’t want to offend our vendors“. The article of course covered major events like the Pullman strikes and Haymarket affair. And the head quarters of the corporation was right outside of Chicago. So in other words don’t write about real history that is inconvenient for capitalists, even the real history of the city you are living in.
Just four minutes into this channel, and I can already tell that Richard Wolf has an INTP personality. I share the same drive for understanding the world and connecting the dots. He seems like a genuine and original guy-this is definitely going to be an interesting show! 🤓

What RW said in the first few minutes of this fine interview resonated with me, I have concluded on my own that much of the political situation in the US is a dog & pony show. RW said it was Punch & Judy. The ruling class allows democracy only to the extent that they can largely control it. But what do we, the commoners, do about it?
I have to watch global media as part of my "job", the level to which Am3ric4n media is just pure propaganda is astonishing. You live in a world where Am3ric4 is the most important thing and everything else orbits Am3rci4. When in reality 8/10ths of the world has moved on - they are setting up their own UN, one that works, they have their trade routes sorted with the "belt and road", they have their own payments system that does not use the $USD - in facts its very clever based on modern monetary theory. It creates and destroys money to balance payments. You guys are living in a perfectly preserved version of the world that existed in 1995, and so is most of Europe. But its not real. Go watch Indian news, Chinese news, Iranian news - they almost NEVER mention the US, they talk about things that are REAL and HAPPENING and the US is not involved in any of them.

So enjoyed listening to Professor Wolff. Your questions were thoughtful, and thank you for allowing this great thinker to fully share his views. I learned so much.
Thank you. Much of it, I know, but the presentation is excellent. It feels good to be in good company. Why are we so ignorant of the plain facts? He answers that too.
@halofreak1990 , right, exactly. My PhD in Russian History has failed me. Worse than that, everything my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and other family members, all of whom lived in the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, and Romania, has been full of lies. Reading all of Marx's and Engels' works, as well, in the original German, has been completely lost on me. Years of studying more than a century's worth of Marxist economic, political, and social theory, also totally lost on me. Why don't you educate me, then? You know, because you've watched some podcasts, had some delusional professors in college, and perhaps the Manifesto. Socialism is temporary. It's telos is always pure communism. You're a moron.
Nice picture. Yeah, they don't even know we are already living in Communism. Central planning = Walmart. Linking government money to the market system = business would go broke. Think of all the ways from police paychecks to food stamps that government money interacts with the market!
Considering that 99% of humanity is stark raving mad, and always has been, I agree. Even though we have so far survived for many thousands of years, because you are alive today this must be the end.
Nobody is talking about God, who is the creator of the world and of humanity. The current situation that we’re living in whether it’s political, economic or social, is a result of not allowing God, who is the wisdom itself (the logos) to guide this world that we’re living in. We have put Him aside and we are telling Him, we don’t need you, we can do on our own. Do we? 🤔
Just an aside: Trickle Down Reagan gave massive tax cuts to the rich while taxing the working man. I was a bartender when his 'tax the tips' policy went into effect, and was soon taking home weekly paychecks of less than $10. So were millions of other bartenders, waitresses, busboys, cabbies, etc. Meanwhile the top ten corporations - including Reagan's old employer, Westinghouse - were posting billion dollar profits and paying NO taxes. Bush and Trump gave even more tax cuts to corporations, and the Dems did absolutely nothing to stop them. Currently 95% of the wealth in this country is held by 5% of the people.
. I loved Putins reaction when he was asked which candidate would be more favourable to Russia. Putting just shrugged his shoulders and said, "It doesn't matter"!
Putin followed that statement with, “ she has a nice smile”, which was really telling to me. Otherwards, neither candidate are impressive, and commenting on her smile, is as though, there is nothing else to compliment her on, so it is down to her smile. This tells you that this country is in a pretty bad way. We need more than a good smile to deal with the complex problems we and the world has today. As an American I have more respect for Putin than these two candidates. We need a president like Professor Wolfe, or Colonel Mac Gregor. Hopefully these men will advise and me listened to with the two inept candidates.

Robinson, I only discovered your channel about 3 months ago. You should be proud. It's fast become one of my favourite YT channels. I wish you every success. Keep up the great work. Also, Richard Wolff is a legend and a great interview subject.
Professor Wolff makes the correct (imho) assertion that both political parties have been essentially the same. He also stated that a majority of people can’t/don’t want to understand the realities world they live in. He then states that Trump is irrelevant…Trump performed a hostile takeover of the Rep. party, with BOTH parties vehemently opposing him but was still able to get support from 40-50% of voters. To me this would show that people are largely aware that both political parties are part of the same machine, and thus they DO understand that specific reality of the world they live in. I’d argue that if a large plurality, and near majority are voting against both parties (Trump), his idea that people do not understand the reality of the uni party system is necessary false. Such a strong deviation from the political uni party of the last 75 years seems very far from irrelevant, regardless of where a person stands politically.
Thank you it just seems like everyone is just blatantly agreeing with this man without critiquing anything he’s saying. As I said before, I’ve always loved to listen to Richard Wolf and what he had to offer. But there’s just some thing about this interview. That’s not sitting well with me. Maybe it’s me. I certainly don’t have a problem with being wrong. I do feel like he NOT understating the dangerousness of Donald Trump
And another thing that just came to mind is that yes the United States of America was born because of many sins that were committed. Horrible disgusting things were done to human beings - - the indigenous that were here before the European came - - the black Americans that were forced into slavery. But now here we are in the present. All of us. We have a very important job to do in my opinion and that is to do everything we can to make sure that Donald Trump does not get in the White House. I feel like Mr. Wolf seemed somewhat callous when speaking about what Trump could possibly do or not do should he get in the White House. Mr. Wolf is a very smart man and I would ask him are you have you been paying attention? I Don’t mind if we decline as an empire. I don’t want us to be a mighty industrial military complex Empire that keeps on exploiting Third World countries but I also don’t want us to lose the good things about the United States of America. Much reform is needed. But Donald Trump just wants to take a torch to everything and anyone who thinks that’s irrelevant is just even a tiny bit out of his mind, even if it is just in that moment that he speaks it.
Trump was able to get 3 nominations in a row because republican voters forced the party to nominate him. The democrats on the other hand don’t have a democratic process ask Bernie, and how many votes did Harris get? Totally un Democratic . So some differences do exist.
If they understand that both parties are part of the same machine, then why elect an artificially tanned buffoon who represents the same status quo, but with a potty mouth? If people understood that the US was a duopoly, they'd vote for the 3rd parties, not keep the status quo
Trump still is Uni-party. He announces the fake president Juan Guildo of Venezuela and gets a standing ovation of democrats and republicans including Pelosi. Trump will mostly do what he is told. Trump however did not conform to several issues. He is not liked because he is not a complete puppet. and he is unpredictable and will often be very blunt as to what is really happening which they don’t like. Trump doesn’t follow the script, and sometimes when he does he will say the revealing truth of it all, So it is unusual to have a president who actually makes independent decisions. This hasn’t happened since Carter. But Trump still mostly follows a party line. Every president since Carter were mostly puppets.

28:47 I admire the way you openly acknowledge vulnerable, self-conscious emotional states publicly. It's common to critique this as a weakness, but the courage to go ahead and acknowledge this will help to build character, robustness and confidence. Also, this kind of self-awareness affords more options and choices. Actual weakness is contriving to hide these emotional states behind a pretense of faux-strength and hollow self-confidence.

This is a great production. I learned a lot and thank you. Professor Wolff mentioned that we Americans don't talk about the underlying reality problem and solutions. My question is HOW DO we go about taking about it? The common reaction of you say anything is people become defensive as if their party is being attacked by your communism, or fascism. If people are encouraged to do their own research, as he suggests, they become defensive that their current position is being labeled as wrong. Richard Wolff is undoubtedly an influential thinker in the field of critical economics. His ability to break down complex concepts and offer alternative perspectives on capitalism and economic dynamics makes his work accessible and thought-provoking. His rhetorical style is thought-provoking and challenges conventional ideas, which can be especially valuable in a context where a deep understanding of economic systems is crucial. Wolff’s ability to connect theory and practice allows his listeners and readers to reflect on the implications of economic policies in everyday life. His approach not only educates, but also motivates people to question the status quo and seek alternative solutions. His contribution to economic education and debate is undoubtedly significant and deserves to be recognized.

Another accurate description of the "American Exceptionalism" and how, as other empires, this one is declining.
If you want to see what America's post imperial economy looks like look at the state of the UK.

Leaving the impoverished community they left even more impoverished. Similar to "white flight" in US communities.
It's crazy to suggest that's the case
This man encompasses almost everything I have felt, but could not understand how to voice for all my years on this planet so far. Amazing.
@@piccalillipit9211My dad said my family history is that of horse thieves constantly moving west .

So in other words don’t write about real history that is inconvenient for capitalists, even the real history of the city you are living in.

What RW said in the first few minutes of this fine interview resonated with me, I have concluded on my own that much of the political situation in the US is a dog & pony show. Historically, there’s one thing we do when they get too far outta line. Do they sell guillotines on Amazon?

Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear this!!!
Trump doesn’t follow the script, and sometimes when he does he will say the revealing truth of it all,
So it is unusual to have a president who actually makes independent decisions. This hasn’t happened since Carter. But Trump still mostly follows a party line.
Every president since Carter were mostly puppets.
Listening to Mr Wolff ...or any of his ilk...just their thought process...their ability to reach beyond what's obvious and look at patterns and cycles and the underlying concern...their ability to synthesize history, political philosophy, economics and intl relations....its like magic what they do. When I listen to him...I feel like a plant being watered....God bless these thinkers. I would be LOST without them in just shitty logic and reductionism n lack of context n no understanding of world history....Thank you for this✨️
From South India, Mr.Wollf interview is quite an eye opener to know the USA socio politic economy. The decline of western culture.
Yah... it was good while it lasted...
Not really
It was genocidal while it lasted. 1 country after another, with the poor used to attack the next country and cheap labour for it new owners@@iantercero5380
Is there a powerful non western culture that is not reproducing some version of western culture?
While the decline is undeniable, it's really nothing in relation to India being a horrific human and environmental catastrophe. We hardly ever talk about India because there isn't much to talk about and its problems are insurmountable. It's not that hard to envision USA correcting its course, but it's impossible to see that in today's India.
Listening to Mr Wolf inspires me to take his course and begin studying economics.
Excellent !!! Rarely seen better and I am 83 years old with an MBA, Accountant .
Astute & Accurate Analysis! BRILLIANT!
I'm 60 and fully understand the need to learn to articulate an idea
This has to be Prof Wolff's best interview.
Mr Wolff - How can we not know this? With the advent of advertising we have literally programmed ourselves into this mindset. Thank you so much for this interview and I'm of to see more.
Be kind to your co-workers. Stop workplace bullying!
💯💯💯
@@j.gyamayaka5826 I have been so traumatized by workplace bullying I wrote a song about it. Thanks for your reply. I know there are other victims out there. I hope my little song brings some comfort.
His explanation of avoidance is perfect but now what do we do about it?
Thanks!!
@@robinsonerhardt Is that a question you can follow up on? ... how we go about bringing the awareness and discussions annoy the underlying real problem.. which i gathered was the distribution of welt having exceeded a functional ceiling. Makes sense that it's a political career killer to even bring up by a candidate. It should start with the citizens.
Thank you for a respectful, intellectual interview.
I would love to see you interview Victor Davis Hanson. He’s the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in classics and military history at Stanford’s Hoover Institute.
I think he’s one of the most intelligent and articulate people alive. Nobody compares to him when it comes to the perspective of modern political and global issues in a historical context. He can explain and simplify things in a way that makes everyone understand regardless of their education. He’s the Academic Mike Rowe.
He would have a similar perspective on many of these topics but he would have a completely different opinion on others. I think different perspectives are very important because the truth is nuanced and nobody has a monopoly on it.
I am a bit biased when it comes to VDH because he’s from my hometown but I think you would appreciate interviewing him and your viewers would really enjoy it.
Thanks for the video.
Good idea!
He did!
@@batman4329 yes , he did interview Victor Davis Hanson, a California dirt farmer’s son and a classical scholar and published author of many critically acclaimed classical/ historical/political books. His reputation and credentials as a professor and olive farmer are longstanding as well as impeccable . And what he presented in a similar interview with Erhardt made mincemeat of what Wolfe stumbled through. And it was calmly with facts and without ad hominem attacks discussed with Erhardt. And he did not constantly say “I” and “me”. That is, as you have mentioned about truth, another nuanced observation of the difference between the two interviewees. Truth is truth, not a relative thing to a You, Me or I.
Hansen's "final case for donald trump" and his protestations about rising up and saying no "...to these woke revolutions..." tells me everything I need to hear to repudiate the benighted DVH, his highly touted logic and rationally notwithstanding.
@@Kekuahiwi It was really good. I had no idea he was going to interview him. He perfectly described the reasons why the left was losing support and accurately predicted that Trump would win in an absolute blowout. It’s shouldn’t be rare to see a top intellectual be truthful to the American people. Most of them have caught the woke mind virus and have lost all credibility by lying to America. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic
1:01:00 When I was a paperboy the paper cost a nickel and the minimum wage was a buck. Today the paper costs $4.00, so the minimum wage should be $80.00.
Minimum wage should have been tied to inflation but one party rejected that from I believe the 1960s.
My first actual job, paying SS tax was at 13. $1.35 an hour. I was rich for a 13yo.
@@LuciFeric137 I was 11 when I had my paper route. I delivered 75 papers, was paid a penny a paper for two hours’ work, so 37.5 cents per hour. (Child labor laws didn’t apply.)

The internet has killed newspapers. I miss the daily routine of reading the paper in the morning while I drank my coffee. It’s not the same reading news online but the coffee is better.

I love to hear professor Wolf! His knowledge about history, politics and the world in general with his intelligent inputs always amaze me!
His brilliant mind breaks down complicated issues with clarity. Hopefully, US decision-makers will take heed.
This is the place to be!!!

The comment section is a testament to what Dr Wolff was saying...
Wonderful conversation. Greetings from Perú 🇵🇪
Greetings from Palo Alto!
Terrific interview, kept me glued to me sit. Thumbs up!
I did not plan two hours for this conversation, but I could not leave. Both parties' policies were dumbed down, but Professor Wolff actually brought clarity to this Election mess. The geopolitical issues are irresolvable, as US participation is required and Americans do not want body bags. Some of us remember. Great evening and thanks!
Thank you so much!
RW very carefully dissects and makes us understand the complexity and current trajectory of hyper capitalism and the ongoing decline of the United States.
Do you mean~Tail is wagging the Dog ?
as in corporate $ controls government
Came across this by chance. So pleased I did. Very interesting, informative and so well said professor Wolff. Thank you.
I've never heard of Wolff, but he is a genius!
Damn, this was one of the best interviews I have listened to. Actually, the past few with Finkelstein and Khalidi have been phenomenal!
I learned such a lot from the two of you have a very long, respectful data-filled conversation.
This person Richard Wolff is a wondrous revelation, cross-connecting & tying stuff together in an "of course, this so clear & brilliant..." way...❤️🔥
He is a bloody communist, bless his little cotton socks.
