Very nice, I wish we had such good prices for these workstations in Australia. The Small Form Factor machines are easy to find, but not the larger workstations or servers.

Yeah, it's odd how anything larger than a SFF is imposible to find in Aus.

Shame, since the easy answer would be to get a friend in the US. however, the shipping costs to down under is not cheap if you want to send anything faster than 30 days

Yup, I hear similar sentiments all the time from viewers outside the U.S. It's unfortunate that computers are so expensive in other countries.

Here in Eastern Europe these brand PCs and parts are cheap as chips - at least some 30% cheaper than in USA (comparing to prices of components mentioned in this video).

I went a higher budget route. My goal was a great pc at $2,000 budget. My rig consists of dual e5 2667 v2's on an Asus Z9PA-D8 motherboard, 48 gigs of samsung ddr3 1600 ram, a sandisk ssd and a gtx 1080 gpu. Issues came up, because this was an older mobo that included i needed to buy a special sound card (MIO 892) and had to buy a generic usb 3 card. The other issue with this board, was the PCIE layout. All in all, a pretty nice build.
I get 16 cores, 32 threads at base 3.3 ghz max 4.0 ghz on one core. All 32 threads running i run at 3.6 ghz. After the x5600's Intel locked the multiplier and no more oc'ing. However, for certain higher end work, my cpu's are better as they support such items as AVX. The 48 gb of samsung ddr3 1600 was also server memory - the motherboard supports ecc, and its cheap, only $180 for the 48 gigs. My passmark score is 91% percentile at 4855 including > 23,000 on the CPU. My Cinebench R15 score is over 2500. When i priced out a threadripper build it ran well over $3,500 so the savings were significant.

Jeffrey Levin I got a sff build for $120 with shipping included. It came with a i5 3570, 12gb of ram (supposed to be 16 but oh well ) 1tb blue wd drive. I got a free old dell case tax form so I switched into that. Got a power supply adapter from moddyi, a cx450m, and I gtx 1060 6gb in the box from eBay for $120 plus $10 shipping. Was about $280 total, 12gb of ram nearly cost $120 for ddr4 so pretty damn good deal

Cool Video - I use the bigger brother the Z800 with 2 X5690 Xeons and 48GB of RAM. I dropped in a GTX1080 and it is my main rig that I use every day. Really a cool machine with incredible build quality for a really low price second hand

How's yours? The computers did have free shipping but now the prices were lowered and the shipping was added.
I received a Z600 from the same company (for just under $200 USD delivered) Friday 12/28 with 2 5650's, 24 GB's of ram and no hard drives. My 120 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD arrive 1/2/19. I have the 6-8 pin adapter already and I've ordered the sound card (for better sound only) as well as the 3.0 card from the links above. I have a new 1060 6GB that will be installed on hand.
FYI, this will be my first ever attempt at a "build".

I used to daily a HP Z800 until just a few days ago of writing this comment. My old Z800 had dual X5660, 176 GB PC3-8500R memory, a GTX 1080 8GB, 500GB+2TB Samsung 860 EVO SSDs, and a WD 14 TB HDD. It ran fine and well, though some games would trigger the PSU overload. Mostly GTA V, but Just Cause 3 would also trigger it. Though I got a fairly massive upgrade in the form of a Lenovo P920 ThinkStation. I carried over my drives and GPU, but I upgraded the CPUs to dual Xeon Gold 6144 and the RAM to 256 GB DDR4. Lets just say, this new system is a whole lot faster than the old Westmere Z800.
Not quite sure why it shut off, the system pulled 600w when I ran cinebench and furmark at the same time, 250w under the maximum. Maybe it was a sudden spike in power usage instead of an overload. I've tried switching PSUs, removing extra add-in cards, and even downclocking the GPU, all that did nothing.

Very cool. I've been using an old Z400 with a modded power supply upgrade for video editing and some light gaming. Now I'm weighing the costs of moving up to a Z420 or 440. Never thought I'd find so much performance value in an old pre-built workstation. Nice build here too.

I purchased one of these systems with 16 cores and 32 threads, it comes with 96 GB of ram 250 gb SSD and a couple of 1tb SAS HDD's plus Quaddro 4000 GPU. They are a great value considering what they cost new. I plan to upgrade my CPU's to two 12 core units giving me 24 cores and 48 threads. Love the price of Xeon CPU's in the used market. One can build a beast of a PC workstation for a fraction of the cost to go new.

You probably need to enable the built in audio in bios. At least on HP Z400's it disables the built in audio if you have a graphics card with HDMI audio support installed to the system.

AA Computers and Technology About 4 years ago I bought an Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 because I thought the built in sound card died. Around 2015-2016 I found out it was disabled in the bios :D
My dad's HP XW6600 (Z600 predecessor) also does that, but for some reason it doesn't have any option to enable it again.

Much agree with you i got the HP Z600 back in 2015 With 2 x Xeon X5650, 24 GB ECC ram, 2 x Intel 160G SSD's, Quadro 4000 GPU for $795AUD. I replaced GPU for Gigabyte 1060 that cost me 298AUD and added a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Card $40AUD that gave me 5 x faster transfer, Work smoothly in the future i probably will do this again with HP620 or HP640. Great Video Thanks.

Even today this workstation is able to cope with 99% of games !
    I have a similar combination, HP Z600, GTX1060, 2 CPU(8 cors) and 48 GB RAM !
You can buy a Z600, dual CPU with less than 200 £ !
    My recommendation is HPZ800/Z820 !
The only drawback is SSD vs M.2 in modern computers !

  • @lazyhominid

Nice video, thanks. I also got a z600 as a Linux workstation, for photo editing and getting into video editing. I got two X5675 6-Core 3.06GHz and 48GB of ECC buffered RAM dirt cheap on eBay, and put an M.2 NVMe disk on a PCIe riser card in it. The performance is just astonishing, especially for the price. A really great solution for a budget workstation today.
But it takes some care to get expansions for the system. There are two revisions of the motherboard, and the first one can not run the X5675 CPU's fully (no AES extensions, which I need, for one) or use ECC buffered RAM. Unfortunately the machine I picked up had the first revision motherboard, so I got a replacement motherboard on eBay and sold off the original motherboard. That raised the price a bit, but well worth it. Especially since ECC buffered RAM is a lot cheaper than unbuffered ECC.
Thanks again, really cool to see!

Would you please provide some more info on your M.2 NVMe drive and PCIe riser card that works in your z600? I want to make sure I get parts that will work in my z600. Thanks.

    • @lazyhominid
      @lazyhominid 6 років тому +1

Any drive and riser which fits will work. I got a cheap riser on eBay with slots for two drives (one PCIe and one SATA) and one Kingston A1000 M.2 NVMe240GB drive for the PCIe slot on the card. It gives me around 1000 MB/s.
However, the z600 can not boot from the NVMe drive, so I boot from another SSD and use the NVMe drive for data I work with, and for any games I run on the machine.

Wow. Thats a really impressive system, especially when considering performance to the price. I guess the only issue with your computer is that there is no real upgrade path for what you have now. Your basically maxed out for what that motherboard provides. But really, I don't think your gonna be low on performance to warrant an upgrade anytime soon, so that is almost a non issue, but if I were you I would've stuck with the XPS. Anywho, nonetheless great build and I hope you can get to creating great things in the future with that system!

About 3 years later, guess what I bought ? A Z600 'barebones' no RAM or HDDs for £51. I'll fit X5675s too over the X5670s already fitted. Yes, it's quick with 2 WD Velociraptors in striped RAiD configuration. Crystal Disk says 370 MB/sec but it'll work with an NVMe SSD it seems. A fabulous buy.

I actually just started looking into these Z series workstations for builds. I have 3 X58 socket Xeon's I haven't been able to use do to motherboards being to costly. This is a good option for someone looking to build a entry level gaming machine or for someone who does more editing and light gaming. I went for the Z400 motherboard for $40 on eBay and the PSU was $15, but the PSU does not fit a standard aftermarket case so I think I will have to buy an adapter for $15. Plus you can find 4 core 8 thread CPU's for $7 bucks like the W3550 and 6 core 12 thread CPU's like the W3670 or X5660 for under $50 bucks. The only thing holding these X58 platform builds back from being a good used option was the price of the boards, so if I can get these Z400 boards to work I will have found a good used budget option. Thanks for the video.

The only thing I would say about the hardware choices is the sound card. Being a media editor, I don't know why you would bother. If you have USB 3.0 or 2.0 just get a two channel USB audio interface. There are loads of these new and otherwise on eBay and other places. There are also numerous USB connected mixers out there which can do the job and allow easy connection of a microphone for A/V purposes. Sound cards just can't match the features and quality of these. I got a Lexicon two channel interface for about $40 new and it came with DAW software.

I managed to get a sata iii card working but it behaved oddly, giving good read speed but very low write, that combined with the fact it takes a bit longer when booting with the adaptor intially, and showing in windows as removable media, I think I have given up on the idea of sata ii for this machine and getting close to 300MBps read and write. I added a NMVE SSD via adapter, usb 3.0 ports, a gtx 1060 6gb.. and I went for the x5675 which seem to be the last known working without fail for this machine as on lower TDP.. but I'm very curious, why couldn't you get x5690 working? I have 3 HP Z400's and the slowest Xeon is the X5670, fastest is the 3.6 ghz X5687 i think. I also have a dual Xeon Asus motherboard and X5675's on it. Cinebench is 1485. My last build is a X99 i7 5820K build @ 4.3 and the Cinebench is 1272. I have used my GTX 1070 in every one of them for comparison and overall the X99 system is a little faster than the dual Xeon X5675's in games but only because it's overclocked. BTW all 3 of my HP machines and the Asus Dual have usb 3 cards with sata 6 included. Going into 2019 all i can say is.....I feel no loss from systems pushing 10 years old and even less from my 5 year old X99 build. I used to build with pre ordered parts before things came out but that was 2001 thru Sandy Bridge. Having spent over 40,000 dollars on Newegg over the years building and selling pc's to locals back in the first Athlon thru around Core 2 Quad release days i truly understand the meaning of future proof and these old Xeons are as close as it gets. Thank God for accessory boards that bring things close to current spec. Also, i'd bet money that iobit's driver booster free version will load those onboard drivers and bring it up to completely updated in one try. I've used it with no complaints for 4 or 5 years now. AND IT'S FREE. Try it and delete it and before long you will reinstall it just like i did.

The HP Z600 onboard audio is a regular realtek HD audio sound driver. make sure you go to the bios because there a A LOT of options that could possibly hold your computer back. And also, did you use the SAS controller or the Sata controller? and where there any SAS Drives in the computer when you bought it?

Is your monitor connect via HDMI and does it have an audio out port? If so I'd suggest you try it. Unless the audio card you suggested has some advanced processing features. According to the selection menu for mine, it supports up to 7.1 surround sound, but I can't try it since I only have stereo speakers and head phones so I use it in stereo mode. My GPU is a 750 ti.

I had problems in the past with a Z800 they corrupt an external hdd and burned a card rider (i mean not that brand but something similar)(for me the safety of my files is very important ).2 Can you pls test a multi track editing in premiere at last 3 cameras with a frame rate of 50fps in hd and if you test it in 4k how it works. Thx again and keep on your work.

both cpus are same? and ram sticks are same (side by side)?
how to psu own fans (2x) ? if someone of theres fans are unconnect or broke > "start loop" without bios.
if it not psu fans, do you have any usb-drive connect? usb-drives must be unplug when you start this hp z600
(you can restart without problems, but "cold start" usb-drives must be unplug.)

don't know if you get that level of improvement...
I know Dual Xeons will be monster performer for any multi threaded task... but Premiere happens to rely much in single threaded performance for many tasks, so at the end of the day, i don't know if an old X79 platform with something like a i7 4930k and up to 32gb of DDR3 1866 would have suite you better, and will bring at least 2 SATA3 ports for 1 SSD + 1 HDD, and allowance for 4 SATAII ports to be used in RAID10 config, in order to have a total of 6 HDD in a best way possible storage config.
That without trading off some stuff servers tend to make (like extremely crappy audio or capacitors for PCI-E connector or being forced to use PCI Legacy Audio card instead of a newer PCI-e)
Also, upgrading to a Ryzen system using an entry level R5 1400x or even the mid range R5 1600 will bring your system to DDR4 and newer stuff, including a more than nice upgrade path with up to Ryzen 2 CPUs.
That ALL being said, i would love to have a PC like yours, i'm stuck with my Fx8350 which is an ok CPU but its reaching a point were i feel that i might need to upgrade in a year or two, since i mostly do Photography and the performace since at the range of "average" at best

Did you run into any issues getting the 1070/1060 to work with the non-UEFI Z600? I read somewhere that they require UEFI instead of legacy BIOS, and everything I've seen says that the Z*00 workstations are BIOS only, only the Z*20 and up have UEFI.

  • @phishphood423
    @phishphood423 6 років тому

The problem with these old workstations is I don't believe the HP BIOS allows overclocking, and that is where you get the most out of these CPUs. Really, an X5650 should be able to hit about 1000 in Cinebench with an OC. That pc should be pulling nearly 2K in Cinebench.

also, i wish to use this for audio production running a DAW with soft synths. how do you think it will perform? what's the best mid price audio card for it for monitoring.
it's running Win 7 Pro at the moment which shows 24 cores. would Win 10 be better and which version will recognise all the cores?
