- After a disappointing DNF at the 2018 Kona Ironman World Championship, Ed Baker has been spending the past 6 months recovering from a hip flexor injury and getting into shape for the 2019 Ironman triathlon season. During the off-season, he has focused on strength and mobility and has spent the bulk of his training time on his weakest area, which is swimming. He kicked off the season as the 1st place overall amateur at the 2019 Ironman 70.3 Oceanside on April 6th, one day before he turned 40 years old. The following week, he was 1st in his age group and 8th overall at Ironman 70.3 Liuzhou, with a finishing time of 4:01.
Ed is also excited to announce that this year he will be racing in honor of his Ironman hero: his three year old nephew Grant Baker. Ed is supporting the CommonlyRare foundation, a nonprofit his family is launching to help other families navigate the exhausting road to diagnose and treat rare diseases. (Grant will not receive services from CommonlyRare, but he is the inspiration for CommonlyRare's mission.)
Ed lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with his wife and four kids. Ed is an angel investor and growth advisor to various startups including Lime, Zwift, Whoop, Q-State Biosciences, and Change.org. Ed was the VP of Product and Growth at Uber from 2013-2017. Prior to that, he was the Head of International Growth at Facebook, a company he joined after they acquired a startup he co-founded called Friend.ly. Ed has an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and an A.B. from Harvard University, where he concentrated in Chemistry & Physics.

Post more frequently. These are great.
Great job, Ed. I am glad that your training has blasted you back beyond the stratosphere. My wife is a breast cancer surgeon at Memorial Sloane Kettering in NYC and NJ. I am sure that she would love to hear more about the CommonlyRare Foundation. And I was permanently disabled in a completely random accident while I was training for rowing. So your recovery from the surgery inspires me to keep trying. I have had 19 surgeries to fix my back, but no luck. You were incredibly kind enough to write me a few months ago. I think we lost touch. Surely, it was my terrible memory that caused me to forget to reply to one of your messages.
I very much look forward to supporting your assault on Hawaii.
Best,
Jamie

Ed I know that make this kind of videos require an effort but I would like to see more of you. Congrats
Damn I’m glad to see you back at it. Keep it up man.

Very inspirational. Love your work ethic and nobility. Please make more of these.
Just discover your journey Ed. Pure admiration for your perspective on triathlon and life. Keep on more vids coming. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Ed. as a beginner preparing for my first triathlon your video is a thru motivation and challenge. thank you !!!
I’ve decided to do a sprint triathlon next April. 8 lengths of the local gym pool, 15 miles bike ride and then 3 mile run. I can just about do 6 lengths in 30 mins (I cannot swim at all!), can just about run 3 miles and the longest bike ride I’ve done so far is 7.5 miles. I’m so close and just need to work on my speed! It’s so fun!
Ed, I really enjoyed this video. Not sure you remember, it's been a long time, but we were in the same class at Shi Da in Taipei the summer of 2001. Good luck, I'll be watching.
Kevin Chew wow, small world!! Thanks for the note. :)

Great content! I watched his previous videos last year while I was training for Ironman Maryland
Love this behind the scenes content Ed!
The first video of you that I saw was the training for your first Kona Ironman. You inspired me! Your whole journey from Harvard to Stanford and then form entrepreneur to triathlete was so full of determination and willingness to reach your goals! I was really sad (selfishly) when I saw on your Instagram that you are giving a break on triathlons! I believed you were keeping up with the goal of finishing Kona! Anyway, congrats on everything!
Congrats on the brilliant performances in Oceanside and Liuzhou Ed! All the best for the rest of the season
Michael Cui thank you!

Who’s here waiting for another video?? Did Ed qualify for Kona??
We definitely need an update! The Kona 2019 results have an Edward Baker listed so it looks like he qualified but didn't start. He is listed DNS.
inspiring :)
We need another one bud
great video, our stories are very similar, only I am just beginning my training for the Ironman. i live in Kona and hope to compete in the 2020 Kona Ironman. like you, my nephew has a rare genetic disorder- PMD( Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease) and we are hoping to bring awareness to it as well. i grew up like you as well competing in track and field and realized i should pursue my true calling of being a triathlete. keep inspiring and feel free to message.
awesome, love it. keep the vidoes coming. quick question...what were your v02 max numbers?
Really interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Hope you can post more videos soon . Good luck!
My kinda Hero :) all the best ED
You seem like a really nice guy. I know with training and a family posting more often is hard but it would be nice to see more videos for your preparation and qualifying to Kona. Maybe you could get a guy to do the editing and posting?
Can you make a video about your daily diet?
Was going to say something negative but I'll leave it at...I wish I had half the talent you do.
Obviously incredible story and multi talented person. Still, I wish he is more open about his motivations and overall about why so much sport..
Please come back!
I was hoping during the scene with the doctor that he would specify what vO2 max they found.
Hi Cole. I believe it was 78.5.
nice one!
Top top top.
Dan plews is watching... 😉😉 #Lettherivalbegin
Hey Ed, ex-collegiate rower here who just moved to Boston post college and have been training for an ironman for about 7 weeks now. In the move I am struggling to find some clean roads/paths to get long bike rides in. Any suggestions?
Hi Nick. I actually do all of my bike training indoors on Zwift!
Overall...good stuff, but the music is a tad depressing.
Can you please say what your VO2 max was?
78.5 :)
Where are you racing your KONA qualifier?
Do you have any triathlon training tips?
😂 and I’m over here with a 500 dollar bike think I’ll quit now
Where are you Ed?
Wait what you're as fast as DR???
Can we get some V02 Max numbers?
78.5 :)
