- The number of migrant encounters in Eagle Pass, Texas - very recently the epicenter of the migrant crisis - has dropped significantly, from thousands of apprehensions daily a few weeks ago to about 500 a day this week, city officials said. But tensions remain high between state and federal officials, with Texas this week blocking the US Border Patrol from accessing miles of the US-Mexico line and its Republican governor saying his state is doing everything short of shooting new arrivals to stem the migration flow. I recently spoke to a migrant family of 4 in Charlottesville Virginia who crossed the border in December 2023. The woman told me that the Border Patrol did not even ask for positive ID as to who they were, but they were given cash and bus tickets to Washington DC. They said the Border Patrol asked for an address where, in about 10 years, a subpoena could be sent for them to appear in Immigration Court to determine if they could stay here. He said they would not stick around to get the subpoena and wouldn't even go to court if they had received one. They were very happy, even proud. They bought a Ford van (which had expired tags) and were headed back to Texas to be with family and "work there". She also told me that they crossed the border "with some very, very bad people...lots of them".
They are breaking the law!! No quarter given.

So when apprehension numbers go up than that's good? I usually hear larger apprehension numbers treated as a bad thing by congressional Republicans. I mean if the number going up is bad and the number going down is bad than the numbers wouldn't actually matter. That almost seems like people are starting with the assumption that everything is always bad and then information is molded to support the assumption. I wonder if Texas is making it easier to not get caught, what other factor would explain the change?

Taiwan just held its national election. They used only paper ballots. The election was conducted, and the results were processed and announced the SAME DAY. Three decades ago, when the U.S. was still a functioning nation, we did the same.

Taiwan is a small island of 24 million people. You aren't doing that with 330+ million. And if someone is trying to cheat, a paper ballot system won't stop them. The US still functions, even though some of its citizens cleary don't.

I agree that paper ballots are a more secure system, but there are some important differences that make reverting to entirely paper ballots and hand counting in America unlikely.
First is the complexity of the election; in Taiwan, the election was just for two bodies: the presidency and the legislature. In America this year, the election will be for the presidency, Congress (including Senate in some states), the governor, the state legislatures, and a variety of state and local boards and offices.
Second, and relatedly, the complexity of the system. In Taiwan, there is one body that oversees the entire process; the Central Election Commission. In America, every single state has its own systems, often further delegated to the counties or districts to actually run.
