At the end of an empire, the money that would be spent on the citizens must be spent on the protection of the empire. The multiple overseas wars happening now are sucking up money. The amount of federal employees does nothing for the GDP. Romney lost his election bid because during his time he wanted to take away government assistance. You that, at that time, 51% of americans needed federal assistance. To many weak dumb people in our society. To may people grew up in the educational system that left know child behind. How do you have the best citizens when the teachers union lobbied congress to make their jobs easier? I have paid attention to my world since 10 years old, since the first desert storm and where I found my role model, general Colon Powell.
We are taught from out very childhood to make a name in the world, to become famous, well-known, successful, a prime minister or a president, a Nobel prize winner - but somebody special, somebody. Every child is poisoned with the idea of being somebody, and the reality is we are all nobodies. And the reality is tremendously beautiful! Just being nobody brings such joy and ecstasy that one cannot even imagine it. Fame brings nothing. It is a very stupid game, very childish and immature. My definition of real achievement is that which cannot be taken away by death. Anything that can be taken away by death is not a real achievement but only a pseudo achievement, toys to play with. Become a nobody from this moment and enjoy the freedom that it brings. Become anonymous and see the joy! There is no worry, no anxiety. Because there is no ego you don't feel hurt. Nothing can hurt you. Somebody can insult you and you can stand there watching and enjoying it because there is nobody inside you to feel hurt, there is nobody to be wounded. You can enjoy and laugh. The day a man can enjoy and laugh while he is being insulted he has already attained something, he has become part of eternity. He has entered into the world of the immortals. Osho
Hey Peter! Love the authentic style of journalism you present to the world. I was thinking, if you have not done Cleveland Mississippi before that would be a place to highlight. They literally still had school segregation( east side high for black/cleveland high for white)until their 2016 prom. Would be nice to see an update as to how it’s been since then.
If one is ready to become a nobody then one will become the greatest. Be nothing then you are all, be nobody then you attain to tremendous extraordinariness. Just be empty and you will come to know the greatest in you, the highest in you. But remember; don't be nothing in order to become the greatest, because then you cannot be nothing. To be nothing is not to be used as a means to become the greatest. The greatness is a by-product, not the goal, not the end. It is like a fragrance. The flower is the end, the flowering of your consciousness is all, and then suddenly there is fragrance. If you search for the fragrance you will miss the flower, and without the flower there is no fragrance. If you search for the flower the fragrance comes of it's own accord. If one is meek, humble, nobody, then the doors of the kingdom open, then you are a divine guest. Then suddenly you are raised to the highest pinnacle of life. But that is a by-product. To attain the kingdom of God is not a goal. Forget all about it. My whole teaching is just be a nobody. Just go on throwing out all the rotten furniture from inside your being and become utterly spacious. And that space is overflowing, overflowing with your being, because the being can grow, it has space to grow. The being can open it's petals, it can become a thousand-petalled lotus. And then there is a great dance inside and great music and great poetry and great beauty and grace. Then the whole imprisoned splendour is released because there is no barrier to hinder it. You become expansive. Life becomed an explosion of light, of love, of bliss. Osho
23 years in DC, I also agree he doesn't really know what he's going on about. Georgetown and Alexandria existed before the district was created. "The French guy" didn't "design it to keep the metro station out " or whatever that nonsense claim was.
With all respect to Sagnik, he did not come to the US broke. He said he had a graduate degree from London and just did an AirBnb stay in Anacostia for 4 months before getting a yuppie job Not representative of Anacostia struggle and DC culture. But i appreciate his obvious love for the city. Just wish someone who really lived it would have spoke on it.
I came from Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, at the age of 19. Raised by a single mother who was herself struggling economically. I arrived in Washington, D.C., as a foreign student at the University of the District of Columbia, one of the historically black universities. To afford the international tuition, which was three times higher than the resident tuition, I worked tirelessly at Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street until I graduated with my bachelor's degree. Subsequently, I earned a scholarship for my master's and then for my PhD, which allowed me to travel the world. I came to the United States with nothing, but now I have everything I could want. America is truly the land of opportunity. For those who cannot succeed here, it often comes down to a lack of ethics and ambition, which are deeply rooted in one's cultural background and the values instilled by parents from an early age. The greatest wealth in America lies in the values and drive that individuals possess. There is no excuse whatsoever!
As someone born, raised and continuing to work and live in DC...Peter I would be pleased to give you a tour of Mumbai, India so I can make up facts about every neighborhood and generally express my disdain for the community.
Me too brother, sagnik should have done a Mumbai or Delhi tour, not even for a London, I'm sure he would detroy the London tour as he is not from there as well.
I have to question the guy who said he had no money yet he moved from India, lived and studied in London and then moved to the states. That isn’t normal for somebody with, no money.
i moved to another country with just 1000$ in my bank acct at 21. I moved from uk to Australia, then to nz, back to Australia, now live in usa 8yrs. So yes, its completely doable. I have 2 degrees and own a business. Ive had no contact or support from any family in 20yrs. As the saying goes 'if theres a will, theres a way'.
Yea it was a little painful listening to this guy who isn't from DC as a non-Washingtonian native talking about it. Like, he has his own impression but it's not the same as a local to the area (DC born and raised).
This is crazy! I got an AirBNB here last year. Was worried but it wasn’t that bad. Yes the were were some “sights” like what Peter caught before of some suspect stuff, but it’s not like Brownsville Brooklyn or Mattapan or São Paulo where people are running around like the movie SHOTTAZ, brandishing guns in your face or broken windows from cars like Bippers in California.
Yeah as a DC native who literally was born in Anacostia and grew up literally across the street at 18:46. This vid was mildly infuriating. Dude talked about how Anacostia is a food desert and how he had to cross the bridge to get "healthy food" is ridiculous when there is a freaking SAFEWAY right down the street from their location! And to hear Peter say "you're right! there is no healthy food around here!!".....um Yall are in a gas station, not a grocery store, wtf do yall expect?? Also was infuriating that Sagnik said that all the residents of Anacostia have low blue collar jobs like trashmen and Mcdonalds. There's a TON of federal workers that live in SE too! Not every federal job pays 100k saleries. You can tell this guy is just a transplant yuppie because he along with all of them always just talk about how dangerous SE is but the only neighborhood they know in SE is anacostia. Im so tired of transplants talking about Anacostia like its skid row when there are pockets of crime that are even higher in Adams Morgan, Shaw, and Columbia Heights. Lastly, in order to graduate from a DC high school we all had to take DC history and Sagnik's history lesson to Peter was....inaccurate. Yes Le'fant drafted the blueprints for DC but he quit and moved back to Paris before anything was done. His african american apprentice, Benjamin Banneker was actually the one who built DC.
Aye Luvah I like homie the commentary has me chuckling cause I lived in Canada for 7 years yeah it's cleaner waye cleaner but they have hood to and all them are in Brampton; see he couldn't talk that shyt at me cause I know the insight on shyt for real.
I like homie the first thing I would have said I bet you prefer to be here than Canada; I would've said to him I don't care what this look like Canada is over crowded with his people and they're not living like we are we take opportunities for granted they don't cause their struggle in a place like Canada is beyond real.
U have points. This is actually my hood, since the 60s, I've seen it all right there minnesota ave se. Now as far as the Safeway, u mean the one further up minnesota ave...that Safeway is a shithole with multiple body counts in the parking lot, and surrounding stores. Thst patlrking lot is a death trap. And that's the only grocery store in the area, the next is hechinger mall Safeway, same odds in their surrounding area, so YES MINNESOTA AVEC IS A HUGGGGGGGEEE FOOD DESERT.....AND ANACOSTIA IS GENTRIFYING NOW, That Mario's pizza they were at was a huge open air drug market just a few years ago. U know
5 minutes in and NOPE. Get a true DC/DMV native to show you whats up. The city is so big, diverse and rich with history. A part 2 and maybe even part 3 is needed!
@@michaelfacciolo9114 So...nobody from Virginia or Maryland can know DC?? That's like saying someone from Queens can't know what Brooklyn is like. Bro... get off the internet.
Peter im from NY but ive lived in DC for 6 years. I really think it was a mistake not finding someone who grew up in DC. There are two cities, one that those of us who grew up there know, and one that those of us who moved there know. Someone who remembers the "Chocolate City" days wouldve been best.
Agreed. I lived there for 12 years and I would not have been the perfect guide. There are certain things only a legitimate local can show you and explain to you
It’s not a mistake per se. It might not be what you would have liked to see. Peter can do another video on DC and likely will. But for this video, it’s this person’s story and experience as an immigrant and DC resident.
I totally agree with you. I kind of find it marginally an insult to have a non-black, non-American who has not lived in that city for a significant length of time to opine on it. I'm pushed through it to hear this guy's viewpoint but he is coming off as disingenuous and using black people for clout.
I think Peter showed one perspective, this one being from an immigrant: getting to achieve his American dream. A dream that most Americans aren't privy of anymore, not because it isn't achievable, but because there are systems in place that are designed to keep the eyes off the prize. I hope we get see more perspectives. Great work Peter, as always.
I was so excited to watch this episode as a DC native. Boy was I disappointed. The comments, however, did not disappoint. Glad to see everyone felt the same way I did. The guide just wasn’t very knowledgeable from a native’s perspective. Still will always love your channel Peter❤! You bring so much joy to so many by sharing unheard stories from across this great land. Keep up the great work❤️.
Peter I love your channel and have lived in the DMV area my entire life. This guy has know idea what the hell he is talking about. Happy to connect you with DC natives that can tell you their story. There is no such thing as “do not cross the bridge”
There was a thing as "Do not cross the bridge" in the 80s and 90s. That statement still exists for transplants. I hear it often as a corporate native washingtonian.
@tatianadanielle934 and that's the problem. Because if you crossed that bridge you'll see the change coming. It's plenty of transplants who live there now.
He was saying the yuppies say this and the women said instantly she felt it...not to argue I don't know what they tell each other but I do know that as a native Washingtonian the sentiment was not to cross the bridge to VA this is before the phrase DMV....and my family still don't cross those bridges . I have so I kinda understand what they were saying in the Navy Yard which ain't the nNavy Yard my grandfather worked at or the Navy Yard my mother's Church held there Christmas party.....those were the days

I’m sure this is a great video for some but for other Washingtonians I’m not so sure. I will pass on watching this one and look forward to seeing other amazing content!
The guy running the food stand with the DC flag hat that is born and raised there would have been probably a amazing guide! I was scared for his safety for a minute. I can get him in for next time!
Yes he is prejudiced. Able to attend grad school which means 4 to 6 years of college and two parents. He has no clue, yet spouts Jim Crow and solutions for the black community 😢@@pcatful

You could've found someone from VA or MD who has never lived in the "district" who could've given a way better representation of the city rather than Sagnik.
True but they were saying imediatee nearby walking distance Grocery stores. He had to catch the bus to Alabama and naylor Rd ...it's a food dessert.and the trucks advertising plays the girl thought clear fruit was fruit juice come on ....well I moved and it's more than one grocery store it's actually 7 nearby and there was 3 within walking distance and 2 7)11..2 CVS 1 Rite aid more of everything in any direction and I ain't far from DC at all...I feel you but it's rough tryna make a dollar out of 15cents....Peace
Facts it's a Groceries. Store call Safeway rite down Minnesota ave benn since I was a kid I'm 34 with a family and it's still there this whole vid is just very disrespectful to my city
He glazed over the fact that there are casts in India! Low cast people are used for slaves that live in cardboard shacks behind the house they service! The men have sex slaves (chosen by their wives) and the children happen from the sex are then put out to work as slaves in factories, homes and selling on the streets! India has treated lower casts horribly!
He is a thief and a liar. Clown all the way. Nobody likes him here. His own friends talk about him and being a fraud. ESP the white guy on the interview who went to Georgetown.
Peter should never have posted this video. This Indian guy has no idea what he’s talking about. Peter should have got a native Washingtonian for this. Extremely disappointed!
Terrible tour guide this time. Seems like a guy who'd seen Peter's videos and REALLY wanted to be featured, but doesn't have the depth of experience and knowledge of the area to tell the real story. Just flipping his water bottle happy to be on a big youtube channel.
I agree with most of the commentors here, I dont think the first guy was right for the interview. Among MANY things, he has no clue what a ghetto truly is.
@@makermagazine5853 yeah inviting someone from the washington examiner is like the worst, this guy is chanted to have a conservative outlook on things. Just get someone from politico, NBC or punchbowl news.
Really missed the mark in this one. I am a white canadian transplant who moved to the DC suburbs 18 years ago and I could have done a better job hosting this video. Disappointed that you didn’t have a DC native show you the true heart of what Washington is.
Guys, remember Peter normally does like a series of 5 or 6 videos on each city or area or subject. I'll bet you he'll have a DC native on one of the coming weeks. I think it's interesting to see and hear about all perspectives, native and non-native alike. Be patient. People did the same to him when he covered Chicago (my hometown). But by the time he was done with the series, he really rounded it out with several perspectives. There's still lots of value listening to what others have to say - and fascinating what others consider areas that Peter must see or stories and experiences that must be told.
@@MrMikeMe Canada doesn't exist on US maps...most Americans think Canada is a frozen tundra, and that the Vancouver Grizzlies are an actual extinct animal
50yrs in DC & this dude just pissed me off. I had my 19 & 23y/o sit & watch with me the 2nd time and they went off because he is NOT representing the city, he has 0 clue as to what he’s talking about. Peter, you’re my guy and my family loves your videos, especially the Titus videos, but this guy? Sheesh! I would’ve come back to DC to film a 2-3 part series of DC period and that’s including ALL 4 quadrants, NE, NW, SE, and SW.
These guys showed a few poor people at the bus stop at the bottom of Pennsylvania Ave. SE not realizing the Hill Crest and Penn Branch neighborhoods are about 1/4 mile up Pennsylvania Ave. SE and they’re two of the richest predominantly Black neighborhoods in America.
This is what ppl dont realize means DMV. People focus on city of DC. But never surrounding parts. You are right. But also PG county holds largest blk american middle class in the country. Yet no one says a word. I know what video is painting. All white areas is rich n all of poor areas r black. Yes that can be true but same time it can be a lie. If u look into areas. In maryland, virginia. Poorest areas r mostly white areas
You totally dropped the ball with the choice of guide on this one, Peter. All it demonstrated was that a foreigner with a graduate degree can make it in America. Hardly a revelation.
This is so crazy. I’m only three minutes in. You all were NOT in Anacostia when you first got out of the cab. You really should have gotten someone who actually knows the neighborhoods.
Living there and growing up there are two different perspectives. Peter can you interview with a black elder who grew up in DC that has seen more and lived it? This guy seems like he read a bunch of articles about DC.
A guy from India who moved to England and came to DC is going to be a guide to you in Washington and its CRAZY history and talk about solutions ….. brother Peter you could have done better . Wrong guy ( nothing against him )
And if an immigrant story is what he wants he should get one who came with nothing, no degree, no money, no job opportunities but worked his arse off to build himself a life. Now that is the American way and dream. Not this guy. Sorry but am not sold on this one. Peter usually does much better!
I am not even from the DC area and can tell this guide has little true knowledge on things…. So many off hand comments that make no sense Please do more on the area!!
I live in DC. Yes. This guy is waaaaaaaaay off. A lot of journalist (with respect to Peter) they know people want to hear about violence and crime. I get it. Tell them it's a beautiful city and nobody cares. The reality is that "don't cross the bridge" is crap. DC like any city has it's parts but nobody will actually bother you. Most of the city is beautiful, great homes, some very wealthy areas and a whole lot to do. You cannot get bored in DC, period! To get into trouble like the video, you'd have to go out of your way. MOST people mind their business and are friendly here. I mean, it's the city so there are things to expect. I've live in DC all of my life and the area and my biggest worry isn't crime, it's traffic!!!! Is there crime? Yes. Like any city. But no place is going to be perfect. It's a lot to do here. From food, to sightseeing, to everything, literally. Again...if anyone is looking for a perfect city, they may have to go to a small and boring city unfortunately. Overall, a beautiful city and beautiful people. Again, you got your outliers.
There's a MOMs organic market literally across the street from that gas station on Minnesota Ave. You should come back and let a real local like me show you the city.
To correct Sagnik who is wildly incorrect on a lot and a non native. Metro started in the 1970's in DC, L'Enfant had nothing to with that or keeping people out as he was long gone. For the Metro to reach Georgetown, the line would have to tunnel under the Potomac and go beneath private properties, not just city streets. The depth of that hypothetical tunnel under the Potomac would have created an incline too steep for Metro trains to handle. Please get better people who can give correct information and history.
I always love these videos and I think the content is so important and informative. This particular video was challenging, the sugar drink thing was awkward, although that is a major problem, that digression felt a bit preachy. I also find it challenging to have someone from one community discussing the challenges facing another community, the points he made were inoffensive and from a good place, but I feel it’s best to have someone from a community speak about their own challenges.
Hoping this is 3-4 part series on the DMV, because you scratched the surface on our region. Such rich history and communities in other parts of DC but also Maryland and Virginia.
I'm from Alexandria, VA, and I was taught about DC history and when Alexandria used to be part of DC. I have worked in DC and have friends in DC. This guy knows absolutely nothing about the district.
DC was originaly a ten by ten mile square which overlapped across the river. The incorporated City of Alexandria (a Scottish Rite dominated city) as opposed to Alexandria in Fairfax County, occupies one corner of the square.
I can tell you know nothing about the hood 😂 the types you expected to see were dead sleep and typically sleep in daily until late in the afternoon. He did a decent job with the tour.
Peter, PLEASE get another tour guide. Go to MLK, North Capitol Street, Howard University, Georgia Ave, Florida Ave, Southern Ave, South East DC, North East DC, Mumbo Sauce, Gogo music, Y’all missed all dat 🤦🏾♂️
The guide is way over his head. At 50:50 he claims L'Enfant the architect of DC, didn't want metro in Georgetown. L'Enfant died in 1825 and the Metro construction phase started in 1969.
LOL great example of how this tour guide was so clueless! Plus, Georgetown was not part of the city of DC until 1871, it was an independent town. Georgetown is decades older than the rest of DC and it was already built when L'Enfant came.
as an immigrant myself. no matter how long i live in an american city, i would not volunteer to be a guide for a documentary video like this...maybe a guide for "where we can find great foods" or "what's my personal experience as an immigrant living here" but not "here is the local community where you can see history evolves" i understand the boundary, no matter how many local friends i have, how many books i read, how many people i have talked to..i would never be fully knowledgeable about the culture, history and community here..maybe my children would be able to do that, since they would be born and raised here..not me....
I really wished you would have talked to a native Washingtonian. I was born and raised in the city and could have given you a good history of D.C. I live East of the River and There are so many good people living there working and doing g their best to live in such an expensive city. It’s great that this young man received those opportunities but we have young people here who are great smart and would want those same opportunities also.
@@bluelivesmatter8502 I get that and hats off. But that's his individual success. But to collectively give wrong information and narrative on DC is silly.
She’s not being “racist”. She’s just stating that there’s something not quite right about this guy. An she’s not wrong! He has a vibe about him that just doesn’t feel right. (To me it’s a very snotty car salesman vibe, know it all type.) Everyone gives off some kind of energy. An especially for women you’re better off listening to your gut instinct! Peoples color or ethnicity doesn’t matter, as shitty people come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, races, nationalities, & ethnicities!
Young and different.. If you think he's racist after speaking up for Anacostia then your clueless🤡💩🤖 Same people would find me mean because I wouldn't be polite about Liberal Fool's, lazy people, Victimhood idiots and sellout black face politicians🤔🤨😎
It would be nice to have DC natives in the next video. I was born, raised, and still live in Ward 7 East of the Anacostia River. Please let Sagnik know that he lived in Fort Dupont, not Anacostia. Very interesting interview.
Having trouble getting through this video. The tour guide is all about him and his achievements. He brings up Jim Crow twice. I don't think Jim Crow laws were that prevalent in DC. This guide is not really that good. Should have interviewed a true resident not a transplant from India.
Jim Crow is the only history he knows I guess. He has no idea what he's talking about. Especially when he talks about Georgetown and L'Enfant-he is objectively wrong on the history there. Georgetown was a separate city from the rest of the DC from before L'Enfant was born until almost 50 years after he died! L'Enfant had nothing to do with it being secluded.
You both said Jim Crow and redlining don't exist now, which is wrong. Institutional racism still exists today. The GOP suppressing the Black vote today is just one of many examples.
Awful tour guide. This guy not even from the DC area, let alone the actual city itself. Gotta get an actual local who grew up in the culture and knows what they’re talking about to take you around. This guy is an outsider.
At 58:45 the guide's failure to even know the stairs in Georgetown they were descending where the famous stairs from The Exorcist and the Exorcist house right at the top of the stairs. Simply unforgiveable they didn't even know that.
Watching this recording from deep inside East Africa but i still was holding my heart everytime our indian immigrant was giving his opinion about the black community..i like how Peter guided the conversations though.
As someone who lived and taught in Ward 8, that community is my whole heart. Peter, you need to go back to DC, and talk to a native, and get the real side of the story. This was INSULTING!!!
Like others mentioned DC is an extremely diverse community. I think with this in mind it might have been a good idea to have multiple people be tour guides. There are so many different topics to broach. I think a really interesting one, for example, would be what I would phrase as ‘suburban sprawl’. A lot of immigrants that got their start with businesses in DC really started to move out of the city during the 70s and 80s at the height of some of its worst crime. So now you have these pockets of micro cities in the Suburbs such as Chinese in Rockville and Ethiopians in Silver Spring. Talking to some of the older generation that lived in DC and moved to these would be a really good idea.
I'd bet that this guide was from and is from an uber wealthy family from India. Did he say he now lives in Georgetown from the poor neighborhood from 5 months LOL. He rubs me the wrong way...
While studying in college, I met people exactly like this. A lot were Indian guys, but some were white guys. One of them had a dad that owned a company with a bunch of employees since before he was born... "I made it from nothing... I had to work for it...people don't get it. I wish people could do what I did." "I am going to be the greatest software engineer of all time, and people who didn't struggle like I did don't understand my drive" All kinds of people will make up struggle stories. I saw a youtuber pretended to be from the ghetto once to impress another youtuber on a stream, trying to tell a rags to riches story. But it turns out, this youtuber's grandfather was a mega millionaire oil baron and he was the most trust fund kid that ever trustfunded. He was a normal suburban kid, but who never had to worry about money for college. It was super embarrassing. Expecially because this youtuber was white, and the other youtuber was black and just trying to talk about his life. It's my understanding from reading 10 minutes of bollywood drama, that telling "fake struggle stories" is super common in India probably common everywhere
I like Peter's videos. But after watching this one, I have to re-think how accurate they are! I was born and raised in DC and know the city inside and out. This was embarrassingly off-the -mark
Another GREAT vid. Saw the vid of Buddy up in Philly. DC is literally 30 mins from me here in MD. Love seeing people from my area. Great vid Peter. I enjoy watching how you interview the actual people who live in the localities you film.
I wondered if someone was mentioning him in the comments. I would have loved to hear more from him, seemed like a really interesting person and wanting people to learn about his neighbourhood

@OliverLiam-px3vx DESIREE RUTH HOFFMAN she’s known for her assortment manager and holistic approach to financial planning of high-net-worth individuals , considering factors like income, expenses, and long-term goals. she's been making some serious waves in the industry
This video gave me the vibe that the two guys just wanted to get good footage out for their political careers, answering the questions was their practice. And the comments really not fw them is icing on the cake. The government is so highschool it’s crazy
For the first time I feel like Peter chose the wrong person to guide him on a video. I have nothing against immigrants but this guy is not enjoyable to watch or listen to.
He sounds like someone who still doesn't recognize how much better he had it "starting from zero" as he claimed compared to the folks who grew up and lived in DC. It's not even the same. Is he going to get the same type of love from cops as the folks he's talking down to about "losing their baggage"? Christ...

@@PeterSantenellonot to mention the first tour guide made so many inaccurate statements… even where you all were located in the first 5 minutes of the video, something that could have easily been checked. I have lived here in DC since 1979 and moved to the area soon after college was completed. The food desert areas had major grocery chains like Safeway and the local chain, Giant. They had to leave SE when the thefts became too much to sustain their businesses. That is also why none are enthusiastically going back. It is a terrible thing when people and businesses are afraid to go into an area of town due to its bad reputation. This happens in cities all over America. They go where the money is and unfortunately, lately, the crime has followed. Peter, you really should have spoken with a person who was born in DC and has lived here a long time. Many points were missed.

Guide aside: Peter, your dismissal of his pointing at generational wealth and asset elimination (jim crow and redlining aren’t today) is an insane thing to say. Those directly impacter inequality of power and wealth in this country. Happy to suggest some essays and writings about this. Start with Waquant.
I am an Indian living in India. Yet we dont keep running around crying wolf every racist incident and try and destroy the very fabric of existence here. Our income levels are far below what US has. Yet the level of deliquency is far less. We dont have people shooting drugs on the streets. We have ghettos too, some of the largest in the world. But we dont have so much street crime. We currently have a government led by a Party who is using communalist "caste " related politics. Yet in the latest elections, they voted that party down. We have a similar history as Israel and Gaza. Yet we dont run around bombing each other out to oblivion. We have big divides between the rich and poor. Yet we dont get into "class" struggle. We experimented with socialism and found it lacking especially in the visionary department. It just simply dont cut to keep giving freebies to the not so deserving. That gives no incentive for self betterment. And it pulls the rest of us down. By no means our country is a paradise. There is a real poverty here. We have corruption and nepotism. We have social issues too, like treatment of women and rape. But that doesnt mean that we go around looting stores and public property, exhibit general lawlessness and look down on our own cultural ancestory. Being real doesnt mean being stupid and destroying what was built. That is sitting on the edge of the a branch and cutting on it too!
@@gamernerd7139 You must be a man if you think India has so much less street crime and lawlessness. India is far less safe than anywhere in the United States, especially so for half the human population. India has a growing drug problem too among young people.
That is correct India was colonized by the British for 550 years. as soon as the British left in 1947, the corrupt Indian politicians have still not sustained the British infrastructure. Bridges streets are all collapsed. My grandmother used to always tell us that the British were there to save us from ourselves. And the British have always referred to India as “their younger brother “. But India has not kept their end of the bargain. This guy in this documentary is from South India they are a different breed of Indians. Low level.
Pretty sure india is racist towards foreigners from i have seen. Taking tourists cameras, putting them in jail for no reason. There is some who make their living scamming americans all day.
I moved to DC in 1990 from Sri Lanka, we were part of the DC diplomatic community. Went to Wilson High in NW, best memories. I never felt like a stranger in this great city. It has come a long way, specially SE. Went to college around here and now work by the Capitol Hill. DC is home, absolutely love this place ❤
Democrats control DC is been that way for decades their city mayors and local politicians that run the city have been Democrats for a long time, they like to keep minorities living like this, specifically blacks and Latinos so that they would be dependent on them forever with their handouts.
Peter, thanks for covering my city. Months ago I sent you an email through your website suggesting you show the differences in the various DMV neighborhoods. Native Washingtonian here would have glad to show you around.
Peter, I watched this video back when you initially posted it, and like so many comments, my very first thought was, why would Peter get this guy to tell him about DC rather than one of the many actual DC natives all around him. You really should revisit DC with people who actually know the city.
Whew as someone from DC this was cringe to watch. I usually love your videos but this video is not an accurate vibe of what DC is. This shows what transplats think of DC and not what an actual resident goes through. There were soo many spots you missed. You really need to come back and get someone who actually was raised in DC for a true authentic experience. I was sad and a little angry to watch this one 😢
What large city isn't at this point? They feel the same to me now. Having grown up in Chicago I just have very little interest in going back or being around liberal city dwellers. They are the least authentic people you will ever meet. Everything is a virtue signal now.
Thanks for watching!

BIG LOVE BROTHER. WELCOME TO AFRICA ILL BE YOUR FREE TOUR GUIDE. ILL TELL YOU THE BEAUTIFUL STORY OF KENYA B4 INDEPENDENCE AND AFTER INDEPENDENCE

Lived in the DMV my whole life. You need a DC native for this tour. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Right I said the samething
Facts. He's a transplant and doesn't know s**t. Been here my whole life. There needs to be a better vetting process.
23 years in DC, I also agree he doesn't really know what he's going on about. Georgetown and Alexandria existed before the district was created. "The French guy" didn't "design it to keep the metro station out " or whatever that nonsense claim was.
30 years born and raise
Dude not even wearing NB Grey's
You right
With all respect to Sagnik, he did not come to the US broke. He said he had a graduate degree from London and just did an AirBnb stay in Anacostia for 4 months before getting a yuppie job
Not representative of Anacostia struggle and DC culture.
He doesn't seem credible- re graduate degreee from London? Seriously doubt it

This was the worst interview.

It’s not a mistake per se. It might not be what you would have liked to see. Peter can do another video on DC and likely will. But for this video, it’s this person’s story and experience as an immigrant and DC resident.
To be fair, he interviewed a lot of natives on the streets. We get the gist of DC.

@tatianadanielle934 and that's the problem. Because if you crossed that bridge you'll see the change coming. It's plenty of transplants who live there now.
He was saying the yuppies say this and the women said instantly she felt it...not to argue I don't know what they tell each other but I do know that as a native Washingtonian the sentiment was not to cross the bridge to VA this is before the phrase DMV....and my family still don't cross those bridges

A guy from India who moved to England and came to DC is going to be a guide to you in Washington and its CRAZY history and talk about solutions ….. brother Peter you could have done better . Wrong guy ( nothing against him )
Thats what i was thinking. feels about right. Someone who has lived there 20 years+ would be ideal.
Indian guy using his t shirt to clean his face/nose ?!
So many off hand comments that make no sense
Please do more on the area!!
Dang who's this guy? Peter, you may wanna do a bit more background research on your hosts. not credible.
Yuh
Seriously. He's full of knowledge.
Having been born and raised in DC you really missed the mark on this one
Damn I'm from DC and I didn't know that about va
Most of Dc was part of Md or Va…. Nothing new
@michaelf8541 va was apart of dc also
DC was originaly a ten by ten mile square which overlapped across the river. The incorporated City of Alexandria (a Scottish Rite dominated city) as opposed to Alexandria in Fairfax County, occupies one corner of the square.

The guide is way over his head. At 50:50 he claims L'Enfant the architect of DC, didn't want metro in Georgetown. L'Enfant died in 1825 and the Metro construction phase started in 1969.
Facts.

DC is diverse. You have people from every state and country in a small city. Dallas Cowboy fans for example are everywhere.

You need to get a REAL DC NATIVE to do another video. This guy isn't the one to do this.
how does he vett these "hosts"? This guy has no real clue of what's going on in DC
It don't take but common sense to see what's going on in DC
I have never even been to DC, but I could tell pretty quickly that your guide was not the right person to show you around
I'd bet that this guide was from and is from an uber wealthy family from India. Did he say he now lives in Georgetown from the poor neighborhood from 5 months LOL. He rubs me the wrong way...
Agree 100%
Yep, he has total trustifarian vibes.
While studying in college, I met people exactly like this. A lot were Indian guys, but some were white guys. One of them had a dad that owned a company with a bunch of employees since before he was born...
"I made it from nothing... I had to work for it...people don't get it. I wish people could do what I did."
"I am going to be the greatest software engineer of all time, and people who didn't struggle like I did don't understand my drive"
All kinds of people will make up struggle stories.
It's my understanding from reading 10 minutes of bollywood drama, that telling "fake struggle stories" is super common in India
probably common everywhere

I have lived here in DC since 1979 and moved to the area soon after college was completed. The food desert areas had major grocery chains like Safeway and the local chain, Giant. They had to leave SE when the thefts became too much to sustain their businesses. That is also why none are enthusiastically going back. It is a terrible thing when people and businesses are afraid to go into an area of town due to its bad reputation. This happens in cities all over America. They go where the money is and unfortunately, lately, the crime has followed. Peter, you really should have spoken with a person who was born in DC and has lived here a long time. Nonsense India was colonized and he was able to get out of the ghetto. He talks about Jim Crow but India has a cast system
