George Miller is too smart to just give you Fury Road pt 2. He delves much deeper into grief and vengeance in Furiosa. And as part of the Mad Max saga, i found it more satisfying than Fury Road, which is a two hour car chase adrenaline rush. And its still leagues better than any of the rehashed s**t we see from Hollywood there days
Exactly, I never get the comparisons to Fury Road as a negative. Even if its not as good as Fury Road, it's still arguably the 2nd best action movie EVER MADE.
So why does Alonso think this movie needed to be as good as Fury Road, or to meet those expectations to justify existing? Fury Road is regarded as one of the greatest action movies of all-time. No one should ever expect another movie to be what no one ever expected Fury Road to be before they saw that one.

Agreed! Why would Miller spend so much time creating this world we saw in FR only to deviate from it in this film? Especially seeing how this is a prequel set in the same world! That would just not make sense. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!!
Sorry that George Miller doesn't have the same artistic talent of the committee that made the cinematic masterpiece Ant-Man Quantumania Alonzo. Not every movie director can be Peyton Reed when he's firing on all cylinders, directing 2% of a movie where the other 98% was done in previz by a formula to give us the most generic and lifeless movie we've ever seen. We need more critics defending corporate MCU and further encouraging the death of movies made by real people!

Fury Road was the first Mad Max I saw. It was of course a great movie that I've since come to consider a masterpiece, but at the time thought, "Well clearly there's more to this story." I eventually did watch the first 3 movies but was somewhat surprised that there was basically no direct backstory. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing that "needed" to be filled, but I do think that there was a clear gap and escalation between Thunderdome and Fury Road that I think Furiosa is justified in helping to fill. I agree with Alonso that it is impossible to live up to Fury Road. I think that the idiosyncratic storytelling and creative choices was closer to something like Road Warrior, which to me helps me not compare it to Fury Road. I see Furiosa as trying to support Fury Road rather than compete with it, which it knows it cannot do, and I think it succeeds at making Fury Road even better and also succeeds at putting some glue in the overarching story of the Wasteland. I would definitely recommend telling someone watching these movies for the first time to watch Furiosa before the big orgasm of Fury Road, which is why I also very much disagree that the credits decision. Saying to someone "Watch 1-3, then Furiosa but not the end credits, then Fury Road" is a very awkward way to recommend a movie series.
Saw in Imax, liked it. Biggest negative was the CGI, more practical VFX would have been better, or the use of The Volume would also have improved the long vista shots and especially in the non-action scenes, in which the CGI was very noticeable.
As much as I didn't like Beyond Thunderdome I appreciated that it wasn't just a remake of The Road Warrior. Some filmmakers want to replicate their success so much they just remake the first one for example The Hangover 2 is basically the first Hangover.
The dude is a horrible reviewer.. you have no right reviewing movies. Full of pseudo-intellectualism without saying anything at all. She’s good though.
We have an impossible task before us. The journey there & back and said quests’ telling. Not easy when going to Troy or returning to Ithaca… Fury Road has an interesting place in John Truby’s Anatomy of Genre. Well worth reading after his Anatomy of Story.
I enjoy this film for different reasons than Fury Road. I like the fact that we have a slower-paced character piece that is of an epic scale, looks great and features a lot of spectacular action setpieces. Back in the day, one of the criticisms expressed with regard to Fury Road was the fact that the film was essentially just one big chase scene there and back again and to an extent that's true. It's still excellent at being that but it does not get to devote a lot of time to the characters. Furiosa does devote a lot of time to the main character and on top of that the film makes the conscious choice to have her speak as little as possible...and yet I always knew what she was thinking and feeling because Anya Taylor-Joy is that good an actress. One of the most thrilling action dystopias I have had the joy of watching tbh.
alonso i really am watching many of your reviews and respect them but i can not believe the idea that you really kinda think that this movie is just a prequel for prequel sake. georges interviews to this movie are so insightful and sensitive that i simply believe and HOPE that you are wrong on this one. furiosa is such a great character and diving into it, especially with georges vision, seems more than a great idea to me. see ya in a week
Alonzo feels about Furiosa like I (not that I'm anyone) felt about the Matrix Reloaded. The Matrix Reloaded is an excellent action movie, but didn't have the mystery or the impact of the original. I didn't think fondly of it for a long time because it simply didn't blow my mind like the original. But looking back, I think I was disappointed only because I was expecting something that literally only has happened a handful of times in the 100+ years of cinema - a sequel (or prequel) that is more innovative and groundbreaking than the landmark original. I hope in time Alonzo can appreciate the movie for what it is (an excellent genre pic and relative to follow-up movies, very well done) than what it failed and likely could never be. I can see the rationale for his score if it is reflective of the lack of vision by the studio or Miller's motivation to make a new movie in the series. He would be using his review to make a point. But, as someone who just saw this movie yesterday, I would give it an A or A-, as opposed to Fury Road's A+. Furiosa is excellent and it's a shame we won't get to see a third movie or Anya Taylor Joy in this role again.
Saw this Saturday night and I liked this one more than Fury Road. There was more story and Hemsworth was better than anyone in Fury Road. Furiosa kicked ass and even Furiosa's mother was impressive. Young Furiosa was a little warrior and a very good actress. I might go watch it again. 9/10
Hello guys, I saw it yesterday here in Spain in my local theater and I couldn't agree more with you , this is not FURY ROAD at all, it is a movie as far from Fury Road as possible. Taylor Joy is talented of course but there's little can do, she looks much more like a model than like FURIOSA. It was a big disappointment for me, it lacks so many things it could have been, too bad really. And a very uncharismatic love interest too. Thank you for another great review!!!
It's so funny that Fury Road is now considered "the best action film ever". When it first came out, the sexism was in full form and the fact that Furiosa got more attention than Mad Max infuriated people.....
Hi why do you think this didn’t do well at the box office? From comments elsewhere: people are tired of girl boss movies, people wanted to see max in mad max, cinema tickets are too expensive… I am glad I went to see it at the imax, but unlike Dune I’m not planning multiple views.
I'm watching an early screening tonight. I love Mad Max Fury Road, and I LOVE Furiosa so I did not like the idea of a Furiosa prequel without Charlize Theron. I have high expectations of ATJ!
Hope that mad guitarist is in it. Maybe we get to see him get his first guitar by trading in a sibling for it, and then find a 'teach yourself guitar' book in the ruins of Bartertown, and then build amps out of junk from the wrecks strewn around from the Road Warrior chase!
@@BreakfastAllDay actually reads like the wife should watch furious first and then see how she takes it in because that’ll be a more interesting progression as not many would have this opportunity
well, I mean there's original Mad Max and Beyond Thunder Dome 2 films that even in a marathon always get a shrug. You either pass on them or you love them. And it feels like this is that..... not even Happy Feet or Babe films here. I still want to see it, GUZALINE!
I personally had an exhilarating time with this movie and I loved it. I think that being disappointed is just the viewer’s fault and that people need to judge films for what they are on their own. 9/10
Just saw it and thought it was great. Couple things bugged me, including the snippets in the end credits - not necessary, and awkward I thought. There is a realization about Furiosa somewhere in the middle that she seriously tries to hide. If you've seen it, then you'll know which one I mean. When it's revealed, it should be a thing. Instead, only one character reacts, and it's totally passed over otherwise. I feel like Miller should have cut somewhere else and shown at least Immortan Joe's reaction - something. But these are small nits. overall, I loved it. Following Charlize Theron is not for the feint of heart. Anya Taylor Joy did it with expertise. Well done. Chris Hemsworth's Dementos - a wonderfully erratic, heartbroken, soulless, incompetent and yet formidable wanna-be. How many incompetent characters have we seen that are presented as buffoons? Not this one. He may not know what he's doing, but he has great cunning and brings about devastating destruction. I thought Dementos was well crafted. He reminded me a little of Wolf Larson in the Sea Wolf by Jack London.

Some of the greatest characters in fury road included the tactility of raw and real engineered vehicles, real cars real explosions. If you remove the real cars and real explosions then an essential character of the max franchise is missing.
Its rlly disappointing that Alonso didnt engage with it at all. I dont think he's seen Fury Road lately because this one is totally different. Spending every sentence comparing it to Fury Road and saying its more of the same instead of judging it on it's own craft is what I'd expect of a film bro review on letterboxd not a professional critic
I don’t get everyone comparing this to Fury Road like why praise those Fast and Furious/Mission Impossible movies and then hold this movie to an impossible standard I’ve seen critics say things about this movie like why make citizen kane two? Like as much as art is nice to be preserved this is still a very artful blockbuster that goes against hollywood rules of filmmaking. Not saying its above criticism but if Fury Road never existed people would probably react the same way to this. This franchise deserves to do gangbusters and I hope it can keep its legacy going when the super populr franchises like Star Wars, DC and Marvel are struggling to realise anything of even a solid cinematic standard at the moment
I can. Fury Road was pretty much perfect and should have been a one and done. Imagine there being a Gravity 2 or a sequel to 1917, Dunkirk or The Revenant. It just wouldn't work. If Miller wanted to jump back into this world again he should have done something very different or maybe add some depth or expansion on the lore. The Raid 2 did what I think Alonso wanted from Furiosa.
Fury Road was a perfect sequel. It took the Mad Max world, but then introduced the war boys, immortan joe, furiosa, aaaand made it an absolute banger of a chase scene the whole movie. No other Mad Max movie does that. And although there were raiders and desert and Max in previous movies, that movie set up it's own lore for the new characters and explored a whole new corner of the world. It did something novel, it added new depths. I can see him being disappointed if this one covers the same ground in form and in world-building while also some bits taking a step down. It feeling more cgi is gonna be a big knock for me. The fact that everything felt so visceral and actually there is what sold it for me. The more cgi stuff is noticeably the less I'm invested in the action.
@@Gavin48from what I’ve heard, only one of the 5 chapters is chase scene in the mood of Fury Road. So I do think the movie does expand the lore in the way you’re referring. From trailers we get to see a thriving green place and actually get a look at bullet town and gas town. It’ll be more than just more fury road but lesser.
I can’t wait to see this. Love the world George Miller created. I do hope that if he has one more Mad Max film in him that he brings back Mel Gibson as an older Max in one last adventure.
Looks like a pretty good popcorn movie. Guess I'll have to get around to watching Fury Road at some point. Action movies generally bore me pretty quickly, though.

It feeling more cgi is gonna be a big knock for me. The fact that everything felt so visceral and actually there is what sold it for me. The more cgi stuff is noticeably the less I'm invested in the action. I honestly felt a bit similarly in the second Dune movie. The first Villeneuve Dune movie hit it out of the park with the world building, visual styling and pacing and wowed me. The second one... I was left wanting for something more, it covered too much of the same territory, being with the desert folks was cool, but was a bit repetitive without giving more engaging depth to their culture or struggle. I felt like I knew it all and was just waiting for it to play out. Direct sequels & prequels are hard. And I'd recommend more do what Fury Road did based on Mad Max 1-3, then what Furiosa is doing in relation to Fury Road.
You cant rate this on a fury road scale. This is a fantastic movie in ita own right. Its a completely different tempo and style than fury road, it stands alone and should be rated as such.
@@SupremacySinemaI'd agree with you, if that were all Alonso had to say. But he said what he liked, described his specific disappointments, and gave it a mildly positive endorsement and recommendation to see it large and loud. But that wasn't effusive enough for some.
Saw it Thurs. & then watched Fury Road again last night & I look way more fwd to being able to watch these back to back than I do Denis’ Dune & hope we get the Max Wastelands film for an epic marathon. Valid points for discussion & criticism aside it’s beyond me what universe in which this deserves a score of essentially ‘slightly better than average’ @ a 6 ?!? The craft alone puts it leaps and bounds beyond most of what gets shovelled out into theatres. If this is what qualifies as a 6, I’d say theatre owners & studios should just give up now, shut down the industry and find something better to do w/ their lives. Hopefully there’s a significant contingent that isn’t dissuaded by such a score & vehemently disagrees. Everyone is entitled to their opinion & entitled to be wrong. In my estimation Christy is infinitely more correct in this instance. As an aside, only having seen it late in its run, I also found Alonso’s review of Civil War baffling as it lacked any explanation sufficient enough for me to grasp the POV and so devoid of value. Having seen Marianna’s take over on Impression Blend I’m left to assume it’s along the lines of what was intended. To me it seemed crystal clear where it needed to be and avoided spelling things out where it would alienate those who most needed to receive the message. 🤷♂️
Too many reviews make the mistake of comparing it to fury road. It's not fury road, it's not trying to be fury road, it's a prequel movie. It's meant to be about the characters, not meant to be more dazzling than fury road. Even though it is a prequel it is meant to be watched and enjoyed as it's own movie, it's own animal. Also adding more new bs just to have "new stuff" doesn't make it a better movie. It's meant to go more in detail about Gaston and the bullet farm because we don't know the details on these places unless we watch furiosa. Basically if you go into the movie with the predisposition "let's see how this compares to fury road" easily you will be disappointed because its a completely different movie and completely different style of movie. He literally says it's an odyssey. Fury road takes places over like 2 or 3 days. Those are supposed to be a very eventful 2 or 3 days. Furiosas events are going to take place with longer spans of time in between
It's no fury road .I wish it had less cgi .I liked the story but it was too long could.have taken 45 mins out of the movie.it was good but I didont love it.the 15 min chase was amazing .

As much as I didn't like Beyond Thunderdome I appreciated that it wasn't just a remake of The Road Warrior. Some filmmakers want to replicate their success so much they just remake the first one for example The Hangover 2 is basically the first Hangover.
Another George Miller masterpiece
For newbies, watching Furiosa before Fury Road would be a great evenings entertainment.
alonso i really am watching many of your reviews and respect them but i can not believe the idea that you really kinda think that this movie is just a prequel for prequel sake. georges interviews to this movie are so insightful and sensitive that i simply believe and HOPE that you are wrong on this one. furiosa is such a great character and diving into it, especially with georges vision, seems more than a great idea to me.
see ya in a week
I like Christy's mid-video ads.
The segues into the ad reads are my new reason for living.
Just bought a bundle on Vudu with Fury Road and the Black & Chrome version of it for $5, going to give them a watch before Furiosa
Happy birthday to you!
Thank you! 🥳🥰
It's so funny that Fury Road is now considered "the best action film ever". When it first came out, the sexism was in full form and the fact that Furiosa got more attention than Mad Max infuriated people.....
I have not yet seen Fury Road 😅 gotta check it out ASAP
I'm only 1/30,000th of your 30K goal but love what you guys do all the same!
Awesome Jane, have fun!
Hope that mad guitarist is in it. Maybe we get to see him get his first guitar by trading in a sibling for it, and then find a 'teach yourself guitar' book in the ruins of Bartertown, and then build amps out of junk from the wrecks strewn around from the Road Warrior chase!
I loved that fire guitar scene
So, my wife has never seen Fury Road…do you think it would work best to have her see Furiosa first, and then Fury Road?
That is a really interesting question. Maybe go with Fury Road first. And let us know how it goes!
@@BreakfastAllDay actually reads like the wife should watch furious first and then see how she takes it in because that’ll be a more interesting progression as not many would have this opportunity
Yes!!!!!!
well, I mean there's original Mad Max and Beyond Thunder Dome 2 films that even in a marathon always get a shrug. You either pass on them or you love them. And it feels like this is that..... not even Happy Feet or Babe films here. I still want to see it, GUZALINE!
Remember: Don't tell us the story, just whether you liked it or not!
why are the breakfastallday videos always have audioclipping? its the only channel that has this problem
Not sure what you mean. What is audioclipping?
I personally had an exhilarating time with this movie and I loved it. I think that being disappointed is just the viewer’s fault and that people need to judge films for what they are on their own. 9/10
Case dismissed.
Mission Impossible Fallout is a masterpiece.
Great news! Alanso doesn't think it's great, I know I'll love it then.
I'm surprised by the disappointment for Alonso here....
He reminded me a little of Wolf Larson in the Sea Wolf by Jack London.
no review of the strangers chapter 1?
No, sorry, we didn't get a chance to see it.
Best Product Placement Transition Evah! Thank you for the review.
Traveling the Wasteland Tips and Tricks - tip #1: If you happen upon a little girl picking fruit in a stand of trees that seems out of place, she's the devil. Ride on.
I don’t know - should you judge a movie because it does not surpass the prior movies? I disagree with Alonso’s standards.
"Fury Road" was good, not great. I will watch this... but I am not super excited.
lol one of the best movie ever made sucka go watch Pride and Prejudice
I haven't seen the movie but Pride and Prejudice, the novel, is one of the best ever lol.
Lol I thought of throw mama out the train skillet scene. Lodge
I really don't understand Alonso's perspective here.
@@Gavin48 "or a sequel to 1917" yeah, how about a 1939? I can absolutely see that happening in the future.
@@DugTheDog lol don't give them ideas.
Or do what FURIOSA is doing.
Use Tom as an intro point and tell half with Tom and then half with old Mel?
Saw it over the weekend and thought it was just OK (like every film this summer so far).
Oh no, sorry you didn't love it! But Kinds of Kindness is coming soon.
@@BreakfastAllDay Thelma too. I've heard good things about it.
The most important issue you never addressed: What's the label on the inside of George's leather jacket?
lol why did Alonzo think this would be better than fury road 😂
Looks like a pretty good popcorn movie. Guess I'll have to get around to watching Fury Road at some point. Action movies generally bore me pretty quickly, though.
Yes, please do! Fury Road gives you no chance to get bored.
@@BreakfastAllDay OK, BTW, you guys are right about Anya Taylor-Joy's eyes. "Queen's Gambit" was worth watching for her eyes alone.
Fury Road was a perfect sequel. It took the Mad Max world, but then introduced the war boys, immortan joe, furiosa, aaaand made it an absolute banger of a chase scene the whole movie. No other Mad Max movie does what it does.

Sounds like Miller has done it again.
I can't wait until next Friday.
Have a blast!
Sounds like it was a solid movie just undercut by its own expectations/reputation.
You cant rate this on a fury road scale. This is a fantastic movie in ita own right. Its a completely different tempo and style than fury road, it stands alone and should be rated as such.
I can’t wait to see it. I love Anya and loved Fury Road. Oh I love grilled food too so I’ll check out Lodge ☺️
Ha, thanks for all of that, Kate!
1:26 Red Letter Media had the same joke lol
Furiosa was shot within the cinemascope 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Not worthy with extra imax tickets
Alonso’s review was truly utterly worthless. He set his own expectations to an unreasonable standard. That’s purely on him, not the movie.
"Temper your expectations" is hardly worthless advice.
@@TroyTheObtuse”Don’t expect this movie to be one of the greatest films of all times” is pretty useless. Why would anyone reasonable expect that?
Just need to to rip half as hard as Fury Road. I'm not expecting anything better than that. They'll never top Fury Road.
Furiosas events are going to take place with longer spans of time in between
Can’t wait!!!! Screw Deadpool
Hi christie. Would you consider a LADIES TUESDAY with you, Katie Walsh and Amy Nicholson? ❤ the show. Ty!
this review will explode
It's no fury road .I wish it had less cgi .I liked the story but it was too long could.have taken 45 mins out of the movie.it was good but I didont love it.the 15 min chase was amazing .
Keep in mind he liked madame web lol
You two are American classics in your own way.
I disagree. Furiosa is a better movie than Fury Road in every possible way.
Please review Aggro Dr1ft
Does it look like a “made for tv” type of movies with the CG?
Not at all, it looks much better than that.
Saw Furiosa today. Fan-fuckin-tastic.
Without having the slightest inclination to run out and see this -- and we loves us some George Miller -- have to say, you two are beyond delicious, and will probably have to go see it, so there Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.
