One of my favorite points of comparison I've seen about Furiosa to Fury Road is that they are a double album. Fury Road is punchy and to the point while Furiosa is messier, more experimental, and more vulnerable because of that. Both sides enrich each other and stand out in their own way. These movies are miracles.
That's why I'm excited to be able to watch them in a row at home eventually. Because with this movie now, Fury Road feels like the pay off, just one 2 hour long third act to Furiosa.
Gary Busey was great in "Surviving the Game" (a remake of what might be the first action movie that utilized a first person point of view moving camera in a chase scene). I'd love to see him as a Mad Max villain, but he might also play even an aging Mad Max.
@@kthx1138 No, I'd say the CGI ranges from passable to outright bad. Its saving grace is that there are still plenty of decent practical effects. Miller did a good job; it was the effects team that shat the bed in post-production.
@@noahheninger I will agree that the CGI is more intrusive than Fury road's. But this movie looked freaking amazing from beginning to end. As an Australian I appreciated how much more explicitly Aussie this was than Fury Road. Obviously being completely filmed in Australia helps, the vastness of Australia's outback is so much more tangible in here and Mad Max 2 than it is in Fury Road (for me at least). I still prefer Fury Road overall as that film feels like a miracle of action filmmaking but this gave me more of what I love about the Mad Max world despite not having Max in it. I liked that the slower pace allowed for more of those purely Australian interactions between characters and it's great that a blockbuster with this sort of tone and confidence in its own world can still be made on this scale. One of my favorite characters from “Furiosa” is Tom Burke’s Praetorian Jack. Why is nobody talking about him? He was like just enough of a Mad Max presence to totally satisfy anyone complaining about Max not being in this film. I really enjoyed this movie. It’s not quite Fury Road, but still really good.
Funny thing, I felt that the character was a bit of remote to really care about the character. I think the strength of that character is that it is actually glue or a passage for the story to build the perfect story arc for Furiosa. I guess it actually shows great writing in the big picture.
Praetorian Jack puts in perspective that Max wasn't the only road warrior who survived the apocalypse. Different person with different drive yet similar "warrior spirit" as Max. I liked his character, and adds why Furiosa connects with Max, since he probably reminded her of Jack.
I actually like the Jack character over Dementus, such strong acting from a brutal looking character. His death scene was epic too with the arm reveal as Dementus wrestles with his inner demons looking on...

Best movie of 2024 by far (so far at least). I experienced several moments of euphoria from the visual quality of the film combined with long sequences of action that were (pleasantly) devoid of dialogue. Hemsworth's monologue near the end of the movie sent major shivers down my spine as we're given a whole new level of insight into his character. I agree with the comparison to the recent Dune movies, which felt "very safe" compared to this which felt like the creators took major risks that more than paid off and the same can be said of Fury Road.
@@KXListhelordindisguised It looks like it's a very good movie, but it's so different that it would likely be an apples-to-oranges comparison. It also probably won't make it to my theater and right now, I don't have access to any streaming services.
You are a reviewing machine! The villain has always been a big part of these Mad Max movies, from Toe Cutter in the first B movieish installment. You should do a rating review of all the Mad Max movies.
The bad CGI at the begining of the movie threw me off but it got better. Young Furiosa was amazing. The actress that played Furiosa was great but physically she looked tiny very undersized unlike Theron that looked bigger. It was a bad day for the box officer all around as even Garfield didn't do that well. A lot of people labeling this as a "Girl Boss" movie but it definitely is not.
It's hard to gage this movie. Horrible marketing, is it girllboss? Why would I want to see a mad max movie without max? I didnt even remember the characters name from the Tom hardy mad max movie, which seems to be furiosa? And why would I want to see more of that character that was already almost a bait and switch in 2015 taking screentime away from the main character, mad max... Just such a strange movie project. Then again strange could mean it actually is someones vision and not a disney remake without sole and completely corporate. Hmmm, good review tho.
Good points! Especially the similarity between Furiosa and Conan's journeys. My problem is, as with many current films, the filmmakers love (coddle?) the character too much. And the story suffers as a result. The character has no real arc. She's fabulous vengeance... and that's not a story. The more engaging version is she's broken by Joe, rises in the ranks, doing crime and treachery, earning the vaunted title of Imperator. THEN she can redeem herself, rising like a phoenix in defiance of Joe.There's a ten year gap, so maybe that's in the 2nd prequel.
Your reviews are always incredible. Just the sheer passion in the way you talk about things, always makes me want to start writing on my own. Would love to hear your thoughts on this years I Saw the TV Glow. It’s easily one of the most interesting of the year so far to me and I think there’s a lot in it that you’d be able to break down and critique
Loved it! This felt like Miller’s Once Upon a Time in the West Feel like it’s the sole great western of the 2020’s and will be re-looked upon for years to come. The Hemsworth character blew me away, there are dimensions to him that caught me off guard. He’s threatening but moreso because he’s unpredictable and nihilistic rather than cold and calculating. His worldview reveal in the finale was profoundly sad.
Loved the movie. Waaaaaay better than Dune 2. I think its funny that people are saying how impressive it is that George Miller directed this movie at 79, as if he was the one doing the stunts 😂
Finally found my echo chamber who share my awe at the masterpiece which is Furiosa. I 100% Echo your sentiments about this review. This film was raw, savage, visually beautiful. The action was wild and creative. The characters vivid and memorable. Yes I think film surpasses Dune and it's everything I want from a big epic adventure movie. This Is what I wish star wars and rings of power and all of these heros journey type stories to be like. I wish we could a modern Conan movie like these modern mad max movies. The primitive energy imbued with classical Mythological storytelling. My favorite scene after the mother's daring raid to rescue her daughter, was the scene where the boss of gastown recreated one of my favorite paintings. It felt like this movie was made for someone with my sensibilities.
As fantastic as this movie is, it’s elevated even higher with the insane 4DX treatment. When the big action pieces kick off you’re right in there with the action and nearly flying out of your seat.
I appreciate your enthusiasm for Furiosa. It is way too long . it's too reliant to CGI . And Chris Hemsworth came close to completely capsizing the movie. He is easily the weakest main character in any of the Mad Max movies . As one would expect he is completely too dimensional at best . And instantly kills the vibe of any scene that has the misfortune to feature him. But if his character enthralled you then my advice is to stay away from the road Warrior movie, far away the strongest entry in the franchise, and infinitely infinitely more intense than any of the other movies . There's nothing grimy about Furiosa . The road warrior is pure grime .
I would really like to hear you review Once Upon a Time in the West. I feel that Sergio Leone echoes throughout many action and Scifi movies of the last 50 years and that he is a far more seminal director than he is given credit for being.
Unfortunately the theater I saw this in had gimped audio which detracted noticeably from the impact of the film. I want to see this again in IMAX to give it a proper review.
Really liked the contrast between the two big bad guys, the realms they'd built. She's caught between two ugly regimes and trying to survive. Makes sense, and the mythological aspects were really emphasized in this one. They even had a guy who vaguely resembled the gyrocaptain in command of aerial units :) Happy to have seen it in theaters, even though costs have gone up since I last went. I like the re-watchability of these things, especially with all the worldbuilding details they're putting in
Fascinating review, thanks! I hadn't been interested in seeing this film at all till I watched your brilliant, thoughtful, well-considered review, which ticked all the right boxes for me (and anticipated questions/concerns I would've had). Now I'll go see the film. Cheers!
They need to start putting your videos higher up in the results; it's so annoying, and indicative of the state of things. Can't wait to see this movie.
I remember not liking Fury Road at all (need to rewatch it). I remember it being basically one giant action scene. But I absolutely loved Furiosa. I felt like it had actual character development and arcs, actual dialogue, and an actual story.
FURIOSA is a masterpiece, and FURIOSA combined with FURY ROAD is a masterpiece. The theme is the same as in all Mad Max movies: How do we respond when the world is falling to pieces around us? Some become warlords/dictators like Immortan Joe. Some become fake-populist warlords/dictaors like Dementus who promises water and food (without delivering on his promise) to people he wants to follow him. Some follow an ideal that they ought not to follow: the war boys, who believe that it is sweet and fitting to die for one's dictator. Both Mad Max (in the early movies and in FURY ROAD) and Furiosa respond by fighting against evil (FURIOSA) and by becoming heroes who help other people (FURIOSA and FURY ROAD). FURIOSA delves deep into how a falling-to-pieces world can hurt a child. She could easily become a bitter person without hope, but despite all that happens to her, she still has hope. (The peach pit is a symbol of that hope.) FURIOSA is the best of all the Mad Max movies because it gives us that background of Furiosa as a child.
George Miller has such a fantastic grasp on translating a vision to screen. The world and tone feels more alive and consistent than Dune Part Two. The grittiness feels authentic and the creativity in the details is so rewarding to spot as each scene lingers.
I watched dune 1&2 and put me to sleep. Just didn't like the story and too many characters. Some nonsense about spice trade and action scenes weren't half as good as this. No idea why it's such a huge box office hit while nobody showed up for this.
@@jonfreeman9682there emerged a cult following around Denis Villeneuve. WB is grooming its next Nolan, it seems based on marketing. Besides, there is Chalamet and Zendaya (racially dubious, hence covers basically everyone), two heartthrobs that cover basically (a) whole generation(s). Also, incomplete CGI turned people off. And everyone assumed, most people are unfamiliar with George Miller, that Furiosa is a statement movie about female hero.
Loved every bit of this movie and I wish it was marketed better. The first trailers looked like a bad cgi fest. It wasn’t. There is a level of artistry on display that is rarely matched these days and makes the grotesque beautiful. It earns its R rating. I watched Fury Road right after and Furiosa does make that film even richer. Hopefully this movie will also find its audience.
Anyone have any thoughts on the IMAX version of this movie? I have screenings close by this weekend. Is it worth it? I usually reserve my IMAX purchases for films shot natively in that format.
I saw it this morning and thought the storytelling and world building in this was really good. It wasn’t just all action in this movie, but it never felt slow for the runtime.
A couple days after seeing Furiosa I turned on Dune 2 at home. My immediate reaction was "Oh, this is like Furiosa/Mad Max if you stripped away all the fun stuff." I made it about 15 minutes and turned it off. I don't think I'll go back and watch it. I'd rather go see Furiosa in the theater again.
Hemsworth puts a villain on the screen that is not only out-and-out evil but sympathetic--his parents were murdered too! "We're all victims of the wasteland" seems to be the message here, a powerful one.
i loved it. i was a bit worried from the trailers but it turned out fine. it wasn't quite as good as fury road but it was still amazing and it was trying to do its own thing. its not just a sequel or a prequel, it's stylistically and tonally very different from everything else in the series
She is right about the Dune comparison I felt the same way. I loved Dune 2 it's a masterpiece but it's not as engaging or as immersive as Furiosa. Idk what it is exactly George Miller just knows how to make a super immersive world and movie.
It's interesting how you felt it is cartoonish bc I think if I remember right Geroge Miller initially wanted to make this movie as an anime, so it's very cool to me that maybe he thought of a spesific style initially bc of the medium he was going to work in and then to translate that to live action filmmaking
I thought Furiosa was great! Most of the negative comments I hear are followed by "..but I haven't seen it yet." Most are based on assumptions. This was totally a good companion to Fury Road... and Dementus was awesome!
Has anyone noticed that there are several parallels with the 'Furiosa' storyline and the 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' storyline? (a movie that opened in theatres just one week prior)
totally agree on dune. for me, the ending saved the movie for me. the final scenes with anya and chris were amazing. it felt kinda dull in the beginning. even despite all the kidnappings, there wasn't really that sense of peril. oh and a waaaaaaaaaay too much cgi. and the quality of that cgi wasn't that great. much less accomplished than the previous.
Wow, nice review, just bought IMAX tickets for tonight, caht wait. I loved Fury Road because it felt like old school filmaking done with modern technology. The workd building and stunts still make your jaw drop nearly a decade later. Then the sound is absolutely insane, its so gut wrenchingly visceral. Road Warrior will always be my favourite Max movie because its dirty & grimy, the world seems lived in and real. But i get it, films like that are not going to be made in 2024 so this will do nicely.
I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. It’s gonna be a tough fact to follow mad Max fury Road so far. I’m here and really good things about this movie.. You’re my favorite movie critic on UA-cam. very impressive review! One of the most objective I've seen of this movie, and I was thinking about Dune part one while I watched it in the theatre just like you say here!!
Loved the movie overall. Main things I didn’t like : the downgrade in cinematography/ effects, and the downgrade for Immorten Joe’s actor. He felt so threatening in Fury Road. Also, Anya T Joy did fantastic but I didn’t like that they used her in the scene showing her smuggle the wives.
Idk. I had a good time at the theater. The fact that George Miller at 79 made this is awesome. Hes using todays tools like a giddy kid coloring in his drawings.
Hell ya can't wait to check this out love your reviews and ya sterile is a quality that applies to basically all of his films works in sicario and prisoners but didn't care for that quality in his later films

The actress that played Furiosa was great but physically she looked tiny very undersized unlike Theron that looked bigger. It was a bad day for the box officer all around as even Garfield didn't do that well. A lot of people labeling this as a "Girl Boss" movie but it definitely is not.
Great review, I love how well you put words together, You're fun to listen to. You might be the best movie reviewer I've ever listened to.😊
Great rundown of this amazing movie! I really hope the tepid box-office debut of Furiosa doesn't put a damper on plans for Mad Max: The Wasteland.
I got very subtle and tasteful wwf heel inspiration vibes from chris hemsworth. He did seem larger than life in terms of a character. Well done.
Loved it! This felt like Miller’s Once Upon a Time in the West
Feel like it’s the sole great western of the 2020’s and will be re-looked upon for years to come.
The Hemsworth character blew me away, there are dimensions to him that caught me off guard. He’s threatening but moreso because he’s unpredictable and nihilistic rather than cold and calculating. His worldview reveal in the finale was profoundly sad.
This was a great prequel to Fury Road. I hope another movie is soon behind
next will be a Mad Max movie, hopefully soon since the director is in his 80s
@@purefoldnz3070 the sandglass is pouring quickly
@@dvitoc yeah, he cant really wait ten years again.
@@purefoldnz3070 he will speed it up now.
Dementus confronting Immortan Joe at the Citadel was so cool to me. I love seeing two villain warlords fighting each other
I watched this and told my friends I heard it was good. I’m so embarrassed. This is the last women I’ll ever take without some salt.
I'm happy that you gave a shout out to Richard Amsel, he doesn't get enough credit. I think he gets overlooked because of Drew Struzan.
Hard disagree, Chris hemsworth absolutely shines in this movie
I would really like to hear you review Once Upon a Time in the West. I feel that Sergio Leone echoes throughout many action and Scifi movies of the last 50 years and that he is a far more seminal director than he is given credit for being.
This movie gets my benefit of the doubt. Will see it regardless but still curious to hear if it's good
Feel the exact same way. Seeing it with some friends and a friends brother in law this weekend.
Unfortunately the theater I saw this in had gimped audio which detracted noticeably from the impact of the film. I want to see this again in IMAX to give it a proper review.
4:20 yes that’s so well said. It really felt inorganic to me in terms of the actors marrying the world they exist in
The take on this movie was extremely accurate, I loved this assessment as much as the actual movie. I do hope they finish up with the last prequel.
Really liked the contrast between the two big bad guys, the realms they'd built. She's caught between two ugly regimes and trying to survive. Makes sense, and the mythological aspects were really emphasized in this one. They even had a guy who vaguely resembled the gyrocaptain in command of aerial units :)
Happy to have seen it in theaters, even though costs have gone up since I last went. I like the re-watchability of these things, especially with all the worldbuilding details they're putting in
Today started with my discovery of this channel.
Its going to be a good day.
Thank you.
pleased to see you liked it! i trust this review more then any of the other ones ive seen, excited to catch this one!
i didnt really pay much attention to this film, but now i am intrigued. i love Anya taylor joy.
She’s one of my favorite actresses working today sis be ACTING. She has that Tilda Swinton energy.
Miller is a colossus of savage creativity.... an all time genius in every sense of the word.
Thank you for raising that Dune point, exactly how I felt. I enjoyed this alot more. Well done George Miller.
It's such an honour to listen to you Maggie
You nail it very well and especially the two Dune’s comparison. I saw Furiosa yesterday and was beyond satisfied!!
Yes, this one is for the IMAX.
Saw it last night, do not miss on imax!! So spectacular, wished it wouldn’t end
I saw it this morning and thought the storytelling and world building in this was really good. It wasn’t just all action in this movie, but it never felt slow for the runtime.
A couple days after seeing Furiosa I turned on Dune 2 at home. My immediate reaction was "Oh, this is like Furiosa/Mad Max if you stripped away all the fun stuff."
I made it about 15 minutes and turned it off. I don't think I'll go back and watch it. I'd rather go see Furiosa in the theater again.
the SOUND in this movie is insane
Oh good. I am curious about this movie and what your take will be on it.
Hemsworth puts a villain on the screen that is not only out-and-out evil but sympathetic--his parents were murdered too! "We're all victims of the wasteland" seems to be the message here, a powerful one.
i loved it. i was a bit worried from the trailers but it turned out fine. it wasn't quite as good as fury road but it was still amazing and it was trying to do its own thing. its not just a sequel or a prequel, it's stylistically and tonally very different from everything else in the series
feminist girl boss movie. I'll watch it when is free on streaming.
Upset by a female protagonist? Seriously?
Great review. Have you watched Road Warrior 2? Many think that's the best one of the bunch. Curious on your thoughts.
Going tomorrow to see it in IMAX which imo is the only way to get the full experience of a Movie like Mad Max:Fury Road
I’m impressed how people can take the loud sound on imax theaters as it’s too loud for me now. I watch in the regular theaters.
The rare Maggie returns having actually enjoyed a blockbuster.
I'm late for the booking today's show are all housefull, My show's on Sunday Morning. Hope this won't disappoint me.
I think the Anya Taylor-Joy ride you’re referring to 01:44 plays out previously in Morgan (2016).
It would be awesome if you could review “I Saw the TV Glow”. Just watched it in my local indie/classic theatre. 4/5
Great review, this film was so entertaining and I totally agree this film should be experienced on the big screen or you do it no justice
I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. It’s gonna be a tough fact to follow mad Max fury Road so far. I’m here and really good things about this movie.. You’re my favorite movie critic on UA-cam. You are absolutely refreshing. Just a very enjoyable person. Always look forward to reading your UA-cam post.
Great review as always, can’t wait to see it this weekend!
Everyone should see this in theaters, it was an amazing experience.
Agreed!
Always a joy to listen to you!
Man.. your passion for this genre is fascinating
To think that George Miller is the man who directed the Mad Max film series, and also Babe and Happy Feet...how much more versatile can one get? :)
He also did a melodrama - and he was great at it - Lorenzo’s oil.
very impressive review!
Just saw Furiosa - really enjoyed it. Not as great as Fury Road - which is a masterpiece to me. But still very entertaining!
Hell ya can't wait to check this out love your reviews and ya sterile is a quality that applies to basically all of his films works in sicario and prisoners but didn't care for that quality in his later films
I rarely agree with Maggie, but I find her reviews still always intriguing.
All Mad Max films are stand alone. you don't need to see any of them to enjoy others. IDK how Miller does it but every film is so different from the one another. I loved Furiosa
Have you seen HOPE AND GLORY - A Mad Max Fan Film yet? They did not set out make be a cheap copy of FURY ROAD, but wanted to make a real MAD MAX movie.
Great review, intelligent, well informed and spot on. Well done! Great film, if you can see FURIOSA on a large format screen do it... Fantastic..
George Miller has directed nearly all of Australia’s biggest movies, Luke Happy Feet, Babe and of course Mad Max. He has done wonders for our film industry. It does warm my heart that people overseas get exposed to our accent and culture through Mad Max and Bluey 😂
