  • Leave it to anime to make one of the most interesting takes on British spy fiction. Read or Die is a great example of why we need less James Bond analogues and more cute book nerds with the power to manipulate paper.

Funnily enough, in an anime that borrows VERY heavily from James Bond right down to the John Barry-esque score, Yomiko Readman fits the profile most real-life spy agencies desire from their field operatives. An unassuming Japanese girl blends far more easily into a crowd than a handsome British guy.

The first time I saw this film was from G4 back when it was a cable channel. I loved this film on first viewing and avidly watched the sequel series as well. I never caught that this universe still had an active British empire though; something that flew over my head then.

My brother and I watched this when I was younger and it's very much a nostalgic OVA for me
That said, the one thing that always bothered me is how Yomiko and Nancy had such good chemistry that I wish they just got together at the end.
Then again, I never realized this was from 2001, so maybe it just woulda been too soon for something like that

"paper master" was a magnificent new and original archetypes. Especially when she was holding her own versus martial arts masters with fiery attacks.
Imperial Japanese Navy idolized British colonialism and the British Navy itself. Some of it's most famous ships were built in Britain, the Mikasa is the only predreadnaught era battleship remaining in the world and shes permanently anchored in Japan, built in Britain. IJN went as far as adopting Brishish Navy officer uniforms. They studied British Navy warfare and implemened into their strategies in ww1 and 2 with high success.
The Pacific War vs the US, the US was losing every major naval engagement up and until Midway. Thr IJN's study of British Navy dedorum and strategy would be both its boon and downfall. Like the British they believed battleships would be the primary winners of ww2 naval warfare. Sinking battleships were their main focus at Pearl Harbor and the Yamatos which are a treasure trove of culture, memes and media entertainment were build in the study of British sea power. While the US Navy focused on building fleets and strategies around carriers.
to say that Germany had more intermational exchange with Japan than Britain would simply be false.

  • @Belgand

Joker Game was a fairly realistic spy anime series set on the eve of WWII. The problem is that it jumped around to a new agent every episode and tended to feel a little bland as a result. We never get to learn more about the agency they belong to or even really explore the individual agents. Made even weaker is that the individual episodes often aren't especially engaging. Apparently it's much more popular in Japan where the original novels have had a chance to explore the characters and develop a fan base, but I found it to be a surprising disappointment. Still, other liked it more and it's well-animated by personal favorite Production I.G.
