I really do love the dub for this show. The fact that they got actual British actors for the TV show to voice Yomiko (Hellena Taylor AKA Bayonetta!) and Joker; and Anita's actress was 12 when she voiced her and does an excellent job. All of the sisters are great together and give off this harmonious vibe almost as if they were all recording together in the studio. They play off each other so well.
You cannot top JB Blanc as Joker, that is just some spot on casting (although Crispin Freeman in the OVA is still great). Geneon pretty much got all kids for the child characters unlike the Japanese dub (which is still good). It's just when you have actual children voicing child characters, the quality is pretty consistent, not to mention organic. J-Ray Hochfield as Natsume was the exception, I think (but she sounds like a teenager, so it doesn't bother me). Often times, the three sisters were actually recording their lines together based on the DVD commentaries (not always, but still). That's probably why.
I really like the second half of the TV! *[SPOILERS]* Yes, it's not as upbeat as the first half, but that just means we get to see these characters interact in different situations! We are Putting The Characters In Situations! The found family from hell, on the run from a library gone bad! They have History and Trauma and honestly the back stretch of the show is just such a ride I can't help but love it. There's a stretch in there that's about 90% plot twist by mass. They're dead! No they're not! All their memories from Hong Kong were fake! Who cares? Wait, maybe they were real? Junior betrayed us! Haha, as if! Even separating the characters makes for a lot of great moments: Anita and Yomiko having to work together despite literally everything about them and their history, Maggie having to turn Nenene in to save her sisters and Nenene being fine with it because she'd do the same thing, the sisters' reactions to finding out what Dokusensha did to them and all coming together by accident and deciding that it doesn't matter and they're sisters anyway, just everything in the house in the countryside! It's tropey, it's shlocky, it's melodramatic and I _LOVE_ it. I *revel* in it. The drama! the suspense! The past fucking things up for everyone involved! *_The character writing._* Then again, I'm one of those sickos who prefers FMA 2003 over brotherhood so maybe I just like watching my beloved characters suffer. I do tend to like pretty gloomy stuff :P
R.O.D. is one of my favorite anime! The composer for the TV series, Taku Iwasaki, also did the music for Gurren Lagann and you can definitely hear the similarities on a few tracks.
Dude, The TV is my anime safe space. I go back and watch those first dozen or so episodes any time I get depressed about aging or how much anime has changed or how little in life I've accomplished. It's just so cozy and uplifting, and despite the later melodrama, early on it hits that a sense of melancholy with life passing you by so well, and shows how being close with people can counteract that sense of futility. My favorite anime of all time.
This series is genuinely so fun, even if it gets darker and more dramatic later, the entire series is worth watching from start to finish (which is easy cus it's only 1 season in total and the ova is only 3 eps)
I love this show. The fact that we spend so much time with the Paper sisters and really get to know them, makes it that much more interesting when Yomiko finally comes back. She wasn't just thrown in with some new characters. By this point, they're fully fleshed out and it makes team up that much better.
I'm currently just so in love with the English dub. Everything sounds so organic and all the performances are great. How the heck has this show not gotten more eyeballs on it? :/
I got more into Read or Die than most series back in the day. Bought the first four manga, the four sequels, the OVA and the tv series. Man I loved this series.
We finally got a strong silent type and it was a woman for once .... whoever made the decisions on the archetypes of characters to include deserves a diversity award
I saw this first on G4 TV back in the old days. I don't think I saw the OVA, but I would one day when it played on Toonami. This was a fun anime, but it can be odd.
honestly this color pallet is pretty nice. I'm not the biggest fan of unnecessarily bright colors for mundane settings..... color should be used as a tool for tone and setting, but a lot of modern anime doesn't quite use color effectively.
I loved this anime! Been thinking of watching it again. I loved the moments when Anita is at school, then they go on spy missions and stuff. Too cool. And yeah I agree with the slog towards the end because I barely remember the last few episodes. Great ova and series, super fun
I seen R.O.D. TV in the early 2000's and i love it. I love the idea that paper can be used for anything. Have you read the mangas? Gives you more information in Agent Paper and then you have Read or Dream manga that gives you a little more information on the the sisters.
This entire series in incredible. There isn't anything I dislike about it except that it hasn't gotten more lol. My friend showed me this show and I didn't think I'd like it at first. I do disagree with you on the tv series though, I actually prefer it more than the ova episodes. Now it's among my most favorite anime along with Serial Experiments Lain and Ghost in the Shell.
I got a DVD of R.O.D the TV from a free box at an anime con. The person didn't want it and had no idea if it was good or not. I was scared to take it, not knowing if it would be good or bad but hey it was free, so I took it. Just watched episode one and loved it.
it's been a while since I watched the OVA and series, but I guess my tastes are just different. I loved the OVA. I thought the anime series was slow and boring (with the possible exception of the end episodes).
He worked on made in abyss?? And Hellsing? And he was behind Maria the Virgin Witch (that one was quite awful). So weird when you look up credits and find weird industry connections like these. Anyways, childhood classic 10/10. Formulated my love for action heroines and made me wave a tube of dollar bills around for days.
THIS does not get the love it deserves! The concept of PAPER bring used in offense and defense is pretty cool and imaginative. Haven't seen anything like it
I ended up watching the tv before the 3 part one because the tv was on Techtv before the 3 part series was on Cartoon Network. Works really well in reverse as well because the second part refers to the first a lot and it makes the first 3 part series have more weight

The SOUNDTRACK...... omg
I love this show so much! I re-watch it many times...if only this anime was remaster and release in the present time it would be soooo popular.
R.O.D. is one of my favorite anime! The composer for the TV series, Taku Iwasaki, also did the music for Gurren Lagann and you can definitely hear the similarities on a few tracks.

I loooooooove the ova and watch it almost annually at this point lmao
Everything you said hit me so hard

Amazing show. Amazing movie. Awesome animation. Awesome characters. Awesome story. Everything is great about this series!!!

I love the ost in this anime.

i like the Fahrenheit 451 and the suppression of free thinking direction of the show
One of the best dubs ever.
I love this fucking anime. I never understood why it never became more famous
I loved this anime! Been thinking of watching it again. I loved the moments when Anita is at school, then they go on spy missions and stuff. Too cool. And yeah I agree with the slog towards the end because I barely remember the last few episodes. Great ova and series, super fun
I just watched the ova and I'm basically looking all over the web for any content related to it lol :p
Love the video, great commentary!
You need to read the manga to find out how nenene met yomiko
Wonder where I Can watch it now I used to love this when I was a kid.
nice to have you back!

I loved Kimberly Yates' performance, she really sells Yomiko's complete lack of physical or combat prowess in the best way
"It's horrible to realize, that you got nothing to do with your own past."

can you do a review of BallMasterz: 9009 season 2?

Just checked and the yuri tag was removed from Read or Dream's wiki 😭😭😭 Got way too excited for a second there...

My my this is smooth but it's an eyesore to look at. I hope there's a reboot 🙏 so more people would watch it
I need to watch the sub oooof
THIS does not get the love it deserves! The concept of PAPER bring used in offense and defense is pretty cool and imaginative. Haven't seen anything like it
This was such a good anime, wish for more
This is an anime that would benefit from a remake for better pacing, but would they be able to recapture the whimsy of the action sequences?
This series made me a lesbian.
I ended up watching the tv before the 3 part one because the tv was on Techtv before the 3 part series was on Cartoon Network. Works really well in reverse as well because the second part refers to the first a lot and it makes the first 3 part series have more weight
I did not know it aired on adult swim, I knew it aired sci-fi in the later years, that's interesting
@@sandman45 yep just the 3 part tho, the other aired on techtv. In my opinion, techtv had a better anime selection than adult swim
omg i remember this show/movie! It was the most epic shit ever!
The good old times when anime in English dub still sounds the best
Interesting.
I had a wallpaper of this but I never watched it wow!
I actually watch the RoD the TV Before the OVA
Where can you watch it
the tv series is on crunchyroll rn, but i couldn't find the ova's anywere, let's hope retrocrush picks it up
sandman ok thx
@@sandman45 I still have Crunchyroll but I think they took it off… do you know what to write? Cuz when I put ROD or Read or Die nothing shows up.
@@theloserest7300 nope sadly they removed it
@@sandman45 No!!!!!! That sucks well thanks for letting me know. Now I gotta find another way to find it
thx for the video
Epic
I always thought it was a show for lesbians since those ladies are really into each other in a very weird way
They've adopted themselves as sisters.
Why does anybody who cares greatly for each other have to be sexual these days? It's a sad society we've become.
You should dress like a trap during your face reveal
What?
