Just to add - Harvest Moon came to the Japanese NSO way before the Western app. It's a completely different situation as there was already an English language version - but the whole thing with Natsume made people think it would never come to the West, and it did :). Don't give up hope!
Imagine the timeline where Tomato successfully convinces Nintendo to use his translation, working alongside them to touch it up a bit, just so that everyone can finally legitimately play Mother 3 in English.
Yeah… I wouldn’t even think about those two in the same way at all. If nothing else, Harvest Moon was already translated and had already been released in NA.
Nintendo has a very weird relationship with the Mother series. They some how both revere it and shun it. I think they are still upset that Earthbound sold poorly back in the mid 90s. Nevermind the fact that RPGs blew up just a couple of years later with FF7. But boy was I stoked to buy a CiB copy of it for 5 bucks back in the day. Never understood how my friends didn’t like RPGs like I did. Then EVERYONE acted like they’d always liked them.

Another thing is Nintendo could be testing to see if mother 3 is big enough to launch on nso as like a big deal post switch 2 because they still would want to support it and having mother 3 could be an indirect way to have a big game launch for like nothing on their end
I really appreciate that you guys are part of the passionate fanbase that does not give up and keeps this masterpiece of a game in the talks. Thank you for also pointing out the very important point that even an excellent fan translation doesn‘t help with more casual gamers who would much more likely try out a more „official“ and easily accessible version. To be honest, it‘s the same with me.
people just expect everyone to be terminally online and to know how emulators work. the truth is, a ton of casual gamers don't know how to emulate or care enough to figure it out. they just want to play games on their game console. not to mention that you couldn't expect an 8 year old or an 80 year old to understand how emulation works but those people deserve to play the game just like everyone else

9:29 that’s me! My favorite Smash character has been Lucas since he came out in Brawl and I’ve never played Mother 3. I would absolutely LOVE to legitimately play the game that my homie comes from someday!!

I will say that the icons are likely just because all three games are on the Japanese service now so they’re bringing icons for each game with each game’s set of icons rotating each week. (So after the Earthbound Beginnings ones rotate out, Earthbound ones will come in, then Mother 3 the following week)
And icons are always available for all regions without any variance.
But I do feel that there is still a decent chance of an official translation eventually. But who knows when it could happen.
It's so funny this news coming out now when finally after all this time I literally just gave in recently and downloaded the translated ROM which I am playing on my Analogue Pocket. It's pretty damn sweet tbh!

It is, and always will be, my favorite game. I can't wait until my first born is old enough to play through it with me. I'll tell him how it got me through the difficult years immediately following the death of my mom, who he never got to meet.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Playing through Mother 3 myself gave me so much love and respect for everything my parents have done for me. I could only imagine what it would be like experiencing the game if you've lost someone that close to you.

if you're a mother fan and you own a switch, i urge you to purchase the earthbound beginnings NSO icons as well as the earthbound and mother 3 ones if they're available in the west. i'm not sure if nintendo can see how many people purchase icons but that's the best way of sending an official message to nintendo that we're interested in the series.
The problem isn't a lack of interest. The problem is Nintendo would make themselves liable to copyright issues... for mere innocent musical homages.
Wanna blame someone? Blame the music industry, and American courts for creating some of the most draconian stupid legal precedents around it. When even Nintendo of America employees pretty much go and say "yeah, we know there's interest but this shit ain't proceeding" I don't think to keep asking for the game is the solution.
@@roskiart8750It's because of the music situation that I'm convinced the only way we're getting Mother3, is as a Full facelift remaster in the style of Link's Awakening, or the recent Mario Vs Donkey Kong.
Having to completely rebuild the game from the ground up is the only way to work around the deeply entrenched music minefield they accidently planted themselves into.
I work in localization here in Japan, and there are alooot of set rules with certain companies when it comes to translating and localizing, depending on the devs/publishers. Obviously Nintendo does things in house, but I’m sure they also have certain guidelines to follow and at this point I’m not sure how much work they’d be willing to put into a localization of a game as old as Mother 3. You can bring up fire emblem but the themes and tone in Mother 3 are much different. Especially considering the audience. Far from impossible sure, but it’s all about what Nintendo wants to put out to the west.
If it gets a localization it will be heavily censored.
Any localization of Mother 3 would remove/dilute the themes of the story as well. So, it'd make it a worse game overall; fans will scream 'use the fan translation,' but that's free of any legal restraints and would cause many more legal issues as a result, so it's not worth it.

What’s so controversial about Mother 3? That it needs to be censored for it to be released in the west.
All they have to do is age rate the game higher like Earthbound Beginnings and slap a trigger warning on the startup screen and we're good to go. They did that with the Tomb Raider remaster and even though it's dumb, it'll cover their bases.

Perfect dark will probably come when the new game gets closer to finish maybe. Would be a smart move. Also why give out all the games when they just slow drip it to keep people sub’ed to NSO

Thankfully, I started studying japanese 3 years ago. Wich is great caus now I can finally play Mother 3 legally, haha. I would recommend anyone to study that language, it's so fun!

Please release it Nintendo! Earthbound for SNES has aged like the finest of wines. I played it for the first time recently on Switch online, and had an absolute blast. Give us Mother 3!
I, too, played Mother 3's fan translated version a long time ago and recall enjoying it fondly. Although I enjoyed Ness' journey a bit more, this third entry was exciting and enjoyable in its own right. I hope it does get an official translation and given it's dues in the coming years!
It really comes down to if they are willing to overhaul the soundtrack. That is literally the hardest part when it comes to localizing it.

I waited years for this to come over legitimately. But I caved and played it on my 3DS. If it came out on NSO, though, I’d play it again 100%.
I got the Mother 3 fan translation gba cartridge. Wonderful experience and satisfied the need to finish the series. That said, not stoked to have to pirate, and would absolutely shell out some money for a remaster/translated eshop item, or simply play on nso. Would love to see the official translation too!
if metroid dread can barely sell 3 million copies, mother 3 would be lucky to sell 500,000 copies

Seriously, if someone could show WHY Moon's case about this isn't accurate, do so. Because they explained pretty thoroughly where the problem stems from and how bad it is(and it's pretty freaking terrible for artists).
Zion, StarTropics is a must. It’s got a lot of the MOTHER charm. I remember Mato saying if he hadn’t gotten obsessed with EarthBound, he would’ve been obsessed with StarTropics instead. Great game, I enjoyed it a lot! :)

The closest I have ever come to jailbreaking my switch has been so that I could play the fan translation on a GBA emulator. I ended up playing it through on my laptop eventually.. It is truly incredible and I still hope that everyone gets to experience it at some point.
I got mother 3 a year and a half ago from eBay, and verified that the cartridge was legitimate.. I played through it with my brother about a year ago. Since then I’ve lost a parent almost immediately after finishing the game so my feelings towards the game are very complicated. It’s a beautiful game, almost every problem with it can be explained away with logic, outside of how the end feels a bit rushed. Played through it almost completely blind, it’s an amazing game, but it just hits too close to home.
I'm playing Mother 3 right now on NSO+Expansion Pass and it's so fun
I feel pretty confident that if Mother 3 is ever localized it'll be as it's own standalone product, whether just a standalone rerelease or a full remake, as opposed to a "selling point" for something like Switch Online. Mainly since, judging from what Reggie has said on the subject, it looks like what it really comes down to is that Nintendo has never really felt like there's been a scenario where they've felt like it was worth it to dedicate the resources localizing a JRPG would require, so if they do it they'll probably want to make sure they can get a full return. I could imagine a full Link's Awakening/Mario RPG-style remake with proper branding as "Earthbound 2" being something Nintendo might push as a big quarterly release sometime in the future.
Remake would give Nintendo an excuse but I have no hope.
It is unbelievable Mother 3 hasn’t been translated and released in NA at all yet. It is quite the no-brainer cash cow. I have hope it will be translated and released. Nintendo would be foolish not to.
thanks for making this video! it really needed to be said and i say the same thing often. the people who go out of their way to shoot down peoples hope for an official release is quite aggrivating.
Most of the people I know, me included, who have played this game, consider it their favourite. It has the humour and charm of Earthbound but the story depth and emotion of an Undertale. It’s brilliant and I wish more people could play it
Kids being familiar with NES games reminds me of when I was a kid, getting a Commodore 64 because its cheap and has tons of games, those made some of my best game memories and nostalgia, some really cool RPGs done before Final Fantasy standardized a lot of things, Agent USA teaching me US geography while I struggle to face the mighty Fuzzbomb, and MULE still being my pick for most brutal competitive game of all time.
Definitely hope to see Mother 3 make it over to the West one day, Mother 1 broke records when it was first released, and M3 is even more playable and sought after, so I think people of all ages would get into it. Especially if some of the popular streamers catch on to it (such as those who commonly play Undertale and similar games, and often appeal to younger audiences), that always does the trick.
I cried literal tears during the final battle. Not ashamed about it at all. It is a crime to keep this game from the West. It is literally about western society changing the world for better or worse. Come on already!

I’ve been interested in playing Mother 3 since I got into Undertale a few years ago. I’m open to playing the Tomato translation, but man I’d love to play an official Nintendo localization.
I would play an official localization. But I'm not going out of my way to play it on an emulator. Official hardware or bust. The Google translate app actually does make the Japanese NSO version somewhat playable, though lol

I don't think the gameplay is great but it's for me the best story in all form of arts I ever and will ever experience.
Great game... I held out forever waiting for a legal way to play, but after we got earthbound beginnings on the wii u and no mother 3, i broke down and got the fan translation.

I love mother 3 so so much. It is my second favorite game (just behind Celeste) and I do badly want and would love to have it released in the west. Also how the fuck can I get those plushes delivered to the west. I want them so badly now.

I've a huge backlog of English games, and a full time job and indeed other hobbies.... there's no way I'm going to find a fan translation and jump through the hoops. I hope we get a official English translation someday.

The big issue is the music copyright problem that exists with the game. It might be the thing that’s holding the release in the west back
We can hope for a physical copy of the trilogy either as they are or remakes.

If you have a gamecube and really wanna play it you can get a gameboy adapter for it (need the gameboy adapter disk too) then buy the english fan translation cartridge online and have fun. Pretty big investment but being able to play it on a big screen other than with an emulator is pretty nice.
Edit: or you can just get a gameboy which is (probably) much cheaper if you dont mind plsying on a much smaller screen. Or emulate if you have a pc. Thats the easiest way

The thing is we want a localised English translation so much, if we do get the game it won’t be part of NSO it’ll probably be released as a game to buy for £35.99 or something, OR it’ll be a remake for full price!
I believe Nintendo looked at how profitable translating Mother 3 would've been. Late 2006 at best, it would've been too late for an English release of niche JRPG and would've lost them money. That effort is better spent on other projects like Nintendo DS games or a really profitable IP. (Think Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team). This reason is probably the same reason Mother 3 isn't translated today. The amount of effort to localize a 2006 JRPG GBA game for Nintendo Switch Online is better spent on other projects.

I honestly think that the best thing we can all do is buy both Famicom Detective Club games and the Another Code collection - that's how we show Nintendo there's a hunger for this type of game.
not long after the fan translation came out, I started playing it on my computer. Loved what I played but a little way in I decided to stop, with hopes I'd be able to play it again someday via more proper/official means. Not holding my breath, but it was nice seeing it's at least available in Japanese on the Switch. I mean, if there were issues preventing it from being re-released as it just was, wouldn't that apply to Japan too? i.e. switch is region free, so they could just "release" a version in Japan only that is updated to include an English translation and though annoying we'd all be able to finally acquire a legit version of the game to play in English, right?
Uh...no. That's not really how Nintendo or the law operate.
There's a reason there's situations where what would be blatant copyright infringement in USA is not in Japan, while others are both sides of the globe. And those kind of roundabout workarounds aren't very Nintendo -like.
Let's go Nintendo, do a Kickstarter for one or more physical editions if you need to fund the translation, I'd jump on it immediately.
I worry the folks who've played the fan translation wouldn't like it as much because it won't be the same, but I'd love to see it.

if mother 3 came to the US and was exclusive to the NSO app it would feel like a massive "monkeys paw" situation. especially since there is no way to buy or keep the games on NSO. if it ever did come out in english i would hope its in a form that you can buy.
It’s my favourite game, and I just want more people to be able to experience it. It’s a story that deserves to be experienced by as many as possible. And I want to prove to Nintendo that it’s always been worth it.
I've avoided the fan translation in hopes of one day playing an official release, but it's gotten to the point where I may as well accept Nintendo isn't going to give us that option.
I don't really emulate anything either, but I'm 36 now... so it's time to pack my bags & go home 😅

Nintendo is a very weird company, they own the Fire Emblem IP, they did the English translation and they put it on the eShop... why did they remove it? It's not like it costs them to sell more copies, it's like printing money.

I want Nintendo to release an Eng version because the game needs recognition. It's like a child that's been neglected and ignored for so long and I want to see him get the praise from Nintendo that it deserves. I am happy that a new generation of Japanese kids will get to play this game tho.

Not quite, no. To get a rom outside of an official cartridge is illegal, but to patch a rom isn't.

@@jaredrush4302 Exactly. If you get a cart, dump the ROM and patch it nothing about that is ilegal. Emulation in and on itself is not ilegal either, it's perfectly fine. It's the ROMs what are the issue
You can buy a Japanese Mother 3 cartridge, dump your own rom, patch it into english, then play it on an emulator of your choosing. That's really your only legal option.

Off-topic but I really hate the borders Nintendo puts on fhe NSO games. Especially hate that you can't disable them. Really kills the atmosphere in some games like Super Metroid.

Agreed. I’m also not a fan of the rewind feature not being able to be turned off. I know I can “just not use it” but my self-control is terrible and I’d prefer the option to disable it entirely

Man, I feel the pain of desperately wanting to recommend a game that hasn't been localized, and probably never will, in a series that actually had the second game localized. It's as bitter as Black Coffee.
I’m a life long Earthbound fan, and I’m so so very tired of waiting… I’ll be dead of old age before Nintendo pulls its head out of its ass, and releases Mother 3 to the west and announces Mother 4, directed and written by Toby Fox.
Please do not let Toby Fox work on Mother. That sounds like a nightmare to me. It's 100% Itoi's story, and he finished it.
Ioti has already said the next Mother game will be written and made by the fans. I think the dude who made Undertale is worth to accomplish this dream.

I think a lot of people who don't have the NSO expansion would be willing to pay the extra cash if they added Mother 3. I know I would. Nintendo knows the Mother series has a cult following.
