  • At her home just north of Tuai, a small town in the mountains of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, Dr. Rangimarie Turuki Rose Peri shares a song in her own language. Rose welcomes people from all over the world into her home to talk about ancient Maori ways and the importance of learning to understand and respect different peoples, cultures, traditions and the environment around us. In the moment you lock eyes together during the Hongi.
    You inhale through your nose whilst the person
    on the other end does the same.
    Together, you’s become intrinsically linked to a moment in time you’s shared together.... the same breath. The same body. The same life.
    We are one.... respect tha Maori 💪🏼🦍💪🏼

    I am fortunate to have been taught and shared the Hongi with a Maori chief from this same region of New Zealand.
    He taught about the spiritual connection to nature and each other. Especially, sharing the breath of life.
    It was a wonderful experience and I have shared with many others.
    We are then all connected with those who have shared the breath of life, since it became custom.

    I like the eyebrows symbolysing bird wings,I didn,t see it like that,now I do.
    For myself the hongi is not really about the nose which is what people focus on but
    the eyes where they see into one anothers soul as they meet during the act.Once the eye to eye contact is made,the trust of the conversation then begins as you speak from words that create life
    peace

    The comparisons between the upper face and birds, trees and whales never occurred to me before. The entire Hongi greeting is based on such a simple, but profound concept. It's beautiful.
    This isn't something I can forget, now that it's been pointed out.
    And now I really want to draw a face made up of birds, whales and trees the way Dr. Rangimarie Turuki Rose Peri described.

      Oh yes. How wonderful the maori people are. Let us bless them. Let is hold them up high and show the world how great the are. News headline from the Rotorua Daily Post newspaper: " Child, 2, dies after Rotorua driveway accident, family member steals from doctor trying to save child's life" As hospital staff tried to save the life of a 2-year-old boy run over in a Rotorua driveway, a family member swiped a doctor's two phones and a bank card and went on a spending spree. The child died a short time later but Melissa Herewini (A MAORI) had already taken the bank card to four stores in Rotorua and bought alcohol, food, petrol, phone credit and cigarettes.

    @please7780 My information has been transmitted to me from our ancient ancestors, and I continue to practice what I was taught by my Speaking Mountains, my Mentors, the Old People who brought me up. We are descended from both the ancient people and the people who came in the Great Fleet. Many of the negative things that have been said about the way we treat children and each other, is not truly reflective of our ancient people. We are regarded as the finest conservationists & Social Scientists

    You just described Colonization as an imposed condition of the murdered, the raped, the pillaged, the plundered. Well done for teaching and upholding your Colonial heritage ...blaming those you dessicrate for reflecting your brutality with erudite accuracy and efficiency.

    I reckon Hippynz aka tauiwi needs to educate themselves about the true history of who has continued to split and divide: parents from their babies in daycares, children into day 2 day classroom learning, adults out to work 7 days a week - thats must be why u took up life as a Hippy aye?

  • @DIJITALSON
    @DIJITALSON 12 років тому +2

    and still you feel the need to separate the historical bond that lies between us. Yes, its true our history is not filled with happiness. But neither is it filled with pain. There is one thing you should work on mate, and that is yourself. I dont blame the pakeha for anything. But I will say that its OUR duty now to look to the future and work towards peace. Leave the hate and open your heart. Then you will experience the joy of life and cease being so cynical.

    Maori or polynesian and they have lost their ways, and you cant say the same for Europeans because they havent, There ways are still rich, mainstream, everywhere around you so ofcourse they are living healthy and alive because you cant even run away from it. If the colour of your skin is brown but you have no maori values, and or any other religion values then heck man your stuck in no where! Thats what happens.

  • @RiaPaki
    @RiaPaki 14 років тому

    I believe that those people who murdured their own are not what i see as a true maori i say people because thats what they are i dont see them as a representitive for all maori, in fact they go against everything that we know as being maori, yes there is the "Maori" race but to be a Maori is a whole different concept, those people are obviously lost in their ways, they have no values, religion, know nothing of their maori culture and thats what happens if you dont have a beliefe in anything

  • @Pa2hard

    @ Epo..wow your a sad pessimistic type of person who obviously has nothing better to do than over analyse a simple lil snippet of a video...
    Have some respect! Have you heard of the concept of cultural safety?
    @ hippny...your making a generalised and flippant remark...you say "but Maori want to split NZ?" I'm Maori and thats not how I see it! We r proud of our culture and our uniqueness..people are people yes, but we hold our links and identity of utmost importance.Ya'll are TAU IWI btw!

  • @RiaPaki
    @RiaPaki 14 років тому

    What the frick? @Epochofbelief, who are you? Have you studied the maori? Because no infanticide was NOT an acceptance practice in our culture, it goes against all of our beliefes, in our culture children are considered as the most sacret gift in life wich they are, and u see it as a maori practise? pfft just because the colour of their skin is brown, maybe if you asked them wich are their marae's they'll have no idea what you are talking about. And yes the majority of child murdue is probably

  • @aaronmorgan8819
    @aaronmorgan8819 10 років тому +2

    I thought the 'hongi' was about sharing the sacred breathe of life ! "tehei mauriora". And no seperation ? did not Tane Mahuta seperate the earth grandmother and the sky grandfather to bring us to " Te Ao Marama" , the World of Light. I'll say it again; "you must be on the Crack"...

    • @tearahiko
      @tearahiko 10 років тому +7

      welll thats the narrative you have heard.... but it does not mean our kaumatua a wrong and are on crack! the summary of your story on the hongi is one of many...the hongi is open to interpretation,, so if you feel comfortable with your story then stick with it.. you need to exspress your opinion with an open mind Arana!
