Something I think you need to explain to these gentlemen is that Hawaii is volcanic, and Iz was just standing near an active lava flow, which is something of his culture. Hence the fire. It's nothing about hell, and more about rebirth, since more land is being added to the big island.
Similarly there is a volcano here in Balochistan, Pakistan. It is very important to Hindus and the festival in the temple of that mountainous area is called "Henglaj Maata" which is attended by masses of Hindu community coming even from India. You may search for it's videos on UA-cam easily.
And Pele is the goddess of those volcanoes and fire and is the creator of the new land.

What Abdul said about how when people make fun of IZ's appearance, they make fun of God, was genuinely very heartwarming and true for many things in life.
Bullshit! "God done it" is no excuse for anything. I wouldn't make fun of his appearance, but it was obvious that he could not live a long life carrying that much weight. I'll happily make fun of your shit god, though.

Coming from Hawaii myself, it was amazing to see how this song became popular and beloved internationally, which I would never have anticipated. And watching these men hearing it for the first time and giving their reactions was both insightful and touching.

In the Hawaiian culture the islands are volcanic. They believe the spirit of their god is in the volcano 🌋 and that the fire and water together are creating life. They believe that spreading the ashes of a loved one into the ocean sends them to the gods and they are then at peace becoming one with their god. I am not Hawaiian 🌺 so a native of that land can correct me if I am wrong.
@@TRYBALS But some explaination regarding muslim and local beleave would be helpful, especially for western educated folks… e.g. I can only asume, these guys are anywhere the indian area. and it's good you filter a little bit, because even from my fellow country men I know, individual believes and opinions can be very strong in elder people… and very harsh…
This was a beautiful rendition of a well known song. I had never heard of Kamakawiwo’ole but his voice brought tears to my eyes. How sad the world has lost him. I think you could give your panel a better idea of the lyrics of the songs you feature if you start singing them all in Sindhi for them after they hear the original version! 😅 Looking forward to your new channel as well. I’m sure it will be as special as this one.

I'm a large person and have always hated myself for it. I've done it all including a surgery that ended up disabling me. The bullying is so real and so painful. What Abdul said about Iz, I had to pause the video and started crying. If we all had an Abdul in our life, I think we would treat ourselves and each other better. I said a prayer to God for Abdul, to help and heal him as it is a blessing that we are enlightened by his wisdom and company. As we are with everyone else from this channel. Thank you Adnan for bringing this all together. Rest in peace to Iz. Definitely as beautiful a soul as the land he was from. Maybe you can introduce them to the original version sung by Judy Garland from movie "The Wizard Of Oz". 😎👍
I have gray hair and two sides of my beard have turned gray as well. People of my age don't wish to see themselves like that, I could hide it easily but who would I deceive by doing so? Just me! Take pride in what you are, who you are. Focus on who you want to be. Work towards the inner self more than your physical form as one day your flesh and bones would be consumed by little creatures underneath and so on. All that you could be left with is who you were in person to others and for others. The song which we are listening today is all about becoming the better versions of yourself and enlightenment. It's a Pakistani song btw. In short, as Mr Rogers said to Jeff Erlanger: I love you for who you are, not the clothes that you wear, not your fancy chair.
The solution to overweight is so easy but hard at the same time its eating lesser than yesterday and sport even walks if u don’t have the time u can walk from work to home if its far u can go with the car and park further than before and walke the extra 100 or 200 meter if ur food is unhealthy u can always make ur own if that is expensive u can always just eat less it’s not that hard in theory but it’s hard on the minds i hope u get healthy soon

Unfortunately, I trusted the wrong doctors and thought they had my best interest at heart but turns out it was about the money and they didn't really care that the surgery they performed ended up disabling me to the point where I can barely walk. Due to some severe abuse growing up, mental health issues and now an issue with my brain, some things just can't be put right again. Like they say "Hindsight is 20/20". If only I had known then what I know now. 🙄

Hawaii is my home, so it was wonderful seeing this song touch the participants. I am glad you mentioned that Hawaii was once an independent state. So much of Braddah Iz's music and efforts were about returning Hawaii to a sovereign nation peacefully and restoring its traditional culture, and it's often not highlighted when people from abroad talk about him. "Hawaii '78" is a great song about his feelings and thoughts on the subject.

As an American i have visited most of the BEAUTIFUL Hawaiian islands… I am sick and saddened of the govt lies told to the beautiful and hospitable people of Hawaii… Hawaii 78 is my favorite IZ song yet is PAINFUL when you TRULY understand.. may we return what is NOT ours to those that do rightfully own…
I have never been to Hawaii, though I could well afford to go. I have long felt that it was being destroyed, since about the time Don Ho sang "The Lights of Home".
@@One-way It's a difficult subject, and in no way does it excuse the many harms inflicted, but Hawaii had a comparably fair time given the other options. The deposition of the queen was ridiculous, but given the French and English track record I think Cleveland's later attempts at reinstating the Monarchy shows a level of mutual respect that other contemporary powers at the time would have scoffed at. Dole was the real villain of the story, but wealthy people leveraging corruption is the story of civilization itself.
IZ was taken from us way too soon. I can not listen to this song without tearing up. I just love the dear ones reactions.

@@Para__Noia Food is an addiction, just as much as drugs or alcohol. It is listed as a disease. There were probably things going on in his life, that made him a food addict. I know, I suffered from it for many years myself. Luckily, I got help. His loss is still tragic, and he WAS taken away too soon no matter the circumstances. Unlike with alcohol or drugs, when you can opt NOT to use or drink.... is VERY different from a food addiction... you can not stop eating. People need to educate themselves better on addictions. Being obese does NOT mean you are lazy or stupid... it just means you have a problem, and you may need help and intervention.

That was the comment that I was drawn to as well, and I am an Athiest. Far too many hateful words being spread around these days against other humans. Be the light you want reflected in the world.

@@johnnyflowers8085 I am personally an Athiest. I read all of the religious texts. Bible, Book of Mormon, Quran, Torah, Bhagavad Gita, to name a few. I took a deep dive into religion and the corresponding texts. Came out a Humanist and Athiest.
@@johnnyflowers8085 My answer is a little more complicated. I was raised super-believing hardcore evangelical Christian; left that about 15 years ago. My stance on deities is, as simply as I can make it, this: I believe there are some beings we would call “gods.” The Christian god could even be one, although I don’t believe this myself. The gods I believe in are mostly “old” gods from the Norse and Greek pantheons, but I have no doubt others exist as well. The biggest difference is my relationship to them. They’re more like coworkers or advisors. I do not *worship* them. I work with them. They help me. We like each other. We respect each other. We love each other. If they suggest I do something, I take it just as that: a suggestion. I do believe in a positive afterlife but I don’t believe deities are necessary for you getting there. Let me know if anything needs clarifying, I don’t have a lot of occasions where I get to talk about this, so I’m not practiced at outlining my thoughts yet :)
As a pagan, I came to a similar conclusion from the opposite direction. There's going to be a deity who resembles every person, so degrading others leads to degrading the deities.
I got sober 25 years ago from drug addiction. It would have killed me, too, and it almost did. My gratitude is immense and unending. Sending light and thanks to Israel for his work here. May he rest in paradise.

Judy Garland and IZ were two wonderful souls that were dealt a bad hand in life, died way too soon, and are remembered for their respective performances of this song. Its message of a better place existing out of sight, which we will never reach in this lifetime, adds another layer to its already poetic nature.

I am surprised that I - from Europe - perceive the song in exactly the same way. I heard it before I learned English and I have to say that I felt exactly the same about it. This is what humanity is all about, not politics, but poems, songs and traditions. In the end it turns out that basically we are all one same tribe, we have the same roots. Thanks for the video!
I loved how Muhammad Riaz's face just lit up with this one. He can be more stoic at times, and I loved to see his eyes brighten and a small smile of joy on his lips. I enjoy the insights of everyone on the channel. It is done in a way where they can state their views without feeling like we all must believe or live the same way. "Live happily and let others live happily" is the perfect sentiment.
It’s worth noting that despite his size, Iz wouldn’t have been made fun by the vast majority of the islanders. The culture is very inclusive and earthy - they believe more in understanding someone’s spirit rather than caring about the physical. As far as cremation - it was very traditional and respectful that so many people came out and rowed their canoes out into the ocean to spread his ashes and send him off with love and honor.
Not to mention... Every native Hawaiian I have ever known (which has only been a handful). were all really big men. It's very common in their culture from what they told me. Also.... Just like him, all of these guys were very gentle giants.
Hawaiians diets were completely turned upside down by the shipping companies take over of hawaii. They went from fish and taro to McDonald's real quick, and what used to be strong fit bodies became overweight and slow.

Cause it was the shipping companies the US government took control by. A pound of taro has become super super expensive while a big Mac is cheap. Not the healthiest solution especially for one's whose diets where extremely healthy. Hawaiians never used to be fat, now they are mostly fat with some fit ones, why? White folks eat like people who need to get fat for winter, hawaiians don't have winter.

When IZ came in with that first “OOO” note and Chacha’s eyebrows shot up, I felt that.
I would like to share that this song is actually a mashup of two different songs: “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz and “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.
I also noticed the reactions to the fire in the video and was hoping there would be an explanation for that. I now understand the role that fire plays in your culture. I think they may find it interesting that Hawaii is a volcanic island (or really a chain of islands), but that volcanoes and fire are very significant in Hawaii culture because of their proximity to volcanoes. There is actually a goddess associated with one: Pele. This is why there is a small part of this video which shows the lava flow. I hope this is interesting to them.

When most of the geography of the pacific ocean is ~ ocean ~ to come upon some of the highest mountains on earth in the middle of the ocean is a miraculous occurrence. The natural dieties involved in the creation of such land are indeed deeply revered ( as with also ocean deities )... think of a woman giving birth: Pele, if i may say, gives birth to the land. .. which feeds the people.. mama ..

It would be a great thing if you could consider to play a song by IZ that is sung in the Hawaiian language.
Most Hawaiian songs have a written translation, so you still can discuss the song meaning
( although so many songs are poetry with veiled meanings ).
Some songs have English and Hawaiian both in them.
I also want to note, that to burn the body is , to my understanding, not a hawaiian tradition at all. This is modern.
I think the main thing is that the body thus becomes part of the great ocean, and that is the most important part.
The song has nothing to do with "what a wonderful world."

11:39 Truckers 🚛 drove by laying on their horns, there were so many of them at one time that it was as if the land itself was crying over the loss of IZ. He is still a national treasure for Hawai'i. ⛰️🏝

I really like how this group is open to exploring and discussing other cultures. It really shows how similar we all are if we could get to the peaceful parts, and enjoy eachothers company as friends do.
My dad visited hawaii a few times and ive heard it’s a very beautiful place. I know he enjoyed his visit there.
Anyway, they played israel’s cover of this song at his funeral and to this day I can’t listen to it without bawling like a big baby. Just thinking about it is making me tear up.
May I ask what you believe it conveys? It's such a simple composition but it carries so much weight. It is commonly used at funerals here... even at Baby's first birthday celebrations. But I like to hear what people's reasons for falling in love with this rendition.

This is my husband’s favorite song. I remember when we first started dating and he said I want to play this song for you and he played it and I was very surprised because my husband is a very strong man and this song is so gentle and sweet. It melted my heart I knew I loved him at that moment we’ve been married for 15 years.

My grandmother was Hawaiian. When Bruddah Iz’s version came out, my dad and us kids had such a connection with it that we played it at dad’s memorial service. Dad loved this version so much. It’s always very bittersweet to hear. Sometimes I smile when I hear it and sometimes I cry hard.

This one's for Gabby! Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (kah mah kah veevo olay) Brada IZ was a gentle giant with the voice of an angel who has touched people all over the world. This song is his gift to us. The canoe that his wife poured his ashes from @12:08 is the famous Hokulea (hoh koo lay uh) which has sailed all over the world. The instrument he plays is a Portuguese instrument adopted by Hawaiians and named the Ukulele (ooh koo lay lay) or leaping flea because of the hand motion when playing, as it is often played much faster. Aloha nui loa!

Hello lovely TRYBALS , you explained that the song had different words and tune. Most of that is because "IZ" put two songs together. Yes, as you said, Louis Armstrong "Wonderful World" & also Judy Garland (from the movie "Wizard of Oz") "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". The combination and his beautiful way of weaving them together, along with his depth & love in his voice, very special. How special that you share from culture to culture, you are a man of peace. Peace be with you all I would love if show them the video of the whole song, with WOnderful World in it, like this is an incomplete experience. Also, the returning of ashes to the ocean...perhaps they might consider (as they are deep and thoughtful men) that all are born in the ocean of mothers womb, just as returned to the ocean (not thrown away) because they live on small island. The land has no room, in practical terms & the ocean is literally all encompassing of their lives.
These gentlemen always make me reevaluate a song and open my understanding and experience in a surprising way. It's very moving to share their experiences with us. Thank you.

This song always makes me feel comforted, like I have a large warm blanket wrapped around me as my troubles melt away.
One think I wanted to mention about Muharam's use of "terrified." While you were correct in telling him that "worried" was the right word when he expressed concern for IZ's health, you can actually say "I'm terrified for IZ." In English, saying "I'm terrified for someone's health" is a way to express that someone is in a really bad state of health or well-being, and is to express a sense of urgency. The reason being that you are more scared or afraid for a person. To say "I'm worried" can still express that someone is in a bad state of health or well-being, but usually there is not as much urgency implied. Like you don't have to take immediate action to help the person.
I was terrified the same way seeing a super obese relative just trying to move. Afraid every day would be his last. And btw...it was not food related at all. His son had the same problem but it was sorted out for him. Too late for his beloved father.

I am glad this is being shared. The video of Iz's funeral effects me greatly and brings tears to my eyes. They celebrate the life that was lived, and celebrate his body being returned to the lands and waters from where it came. It is beautiful and touches me deeply. I often listen to his music and it brings me peace. I think this must have been his purpose in life, and I am grateful that his music reached me and continues to reach many others.

To be honest, as a Texan, I can understand the desire to see an independent Hawai'I, as Texas was an independent Republic for a time, and there is a lot of pride and natural desire to return to that, IZ's hope was to see an independent Hawai'I, I personally hope it happens, Hawai'I should be independent even before Texas, even more than Texas
Except Hawaiians are native to the island. You're referring to Whites that were allowed to settle and just decided that Texas is theirs now. Texas belongs to Mexico.
Texas has more of a reason to be independent so they can secure their border without government interference

I think it might be interesting to mention to them, the next time you see them, that this is a combination of two different songs, wonderful world, and somewhere over the rainbow. He took the message from both and combined them in a very beautiful way. He also sang a lot in his native language.

Israel was a talented and beautiful young man who died far too young. None of the Tribals mentioned the sheer joy of the celebration of IZ's life by his community, friends and family which I thought would be a highlight of the video for them.
I wanted them to notice that too but I guess the cremation may have really startled them, which I understand. But Iz's life celebration is something we could all be proud of😊
I think they didn’t understand it was his funeral. It would probably be very different to their funerals. I wish it had been explained.

Being of Hawaiian descent, watching these beautiful people react the way they did made me smile uncontrollably! We are all closely connected in some way or another. Having a sense of Akua (God) is what we all have in common near or far, we are all brothers and sisters regardless of race, color or religion. My aloha (Love) and blessings goes out to these men which we all share similarities in some way shape or form!! My pule (prayer) is that may Akua continue to give them a long and prosperous life!!!

IZ truly touched the hearts of everyone ~ of all kinds ~ and speaking from here in Hawai'i, as soon as the funeral ( and memorial ) was mentioned, i cried all the way through the rest of your video.
I am really greatful for the reflections given by the lovely tribal men ~ they 'got it' exactly , so many things said by the dear man in brown shirt, i appreciated hearing his reflections on IZ and the song, and also the man in white: yes about being equal in the eyes of the creator.
🌊i also found it interesting they did not know of Hawai'i ~ this shows how all of us are somehow unaware of the whole world~ that makes sharing wonderful. Mahalo Nui ! Gratitudes 💛🌼🌿
I lived in Hawaii while in the marine corps. I first heard of IZ when I was there and instantly loved his music. I never met him personally as he died long before I got to Hawaii(2003-2006). Even now when I hear that song I get all choked up inside and it bring tears of sadness and joy at the same time.

I only heard this song a relatively short time ago when a co-worker friend introduced it to me after she came back from one of her many trips to Hawaii, this time determined to learn to play the ukulele she bought. The song warms my heart and lifts my spirits, while at the same time I can’t listen to his beautiful singing without tearing up. What a sweet soul he was. As are these fine gentlemen.

Your videos always fill me with smiles & transport me away from the stresses of the day. I've watched many of your videos & been a subscriber for some time now & it STILL amazes me the wisdom of the people you interview. They may not be able to read or have not experienced much of the world outside their villages or received much in the way of formal education, yet they understand the world...the universe...at a level we should all wish to attain some day.

I love seeing how other cultures interpret each other's music. This song always takes me to a place no other one can so it's very interesting to watch these men from a completely different culture and how they interpret a song written by an American and sung and played by an amazing Hawaiian singer.
