  • Rongoā Māori is the traditional Māori healing system. This ancient lore, including plant use, massage, and incantations, has been passed down through many generations.
Te Waari Carkeek is a kaumātua (elder) at Te Papa. He and members of his family, all descendants of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, demonstrate a remedy for sprains, strains, and broken bones, using the poisonous plant tutu (Coriaria species).
The properties of tutu can be used to treat arthritis, skin rashes, gout, and other ailments.

Yes I used boiled tutu in flower on a horse which had gone over a bluff and may have broken bones in its both back legs but manage to get it to a opening by the side of the river where it had been lying there for four days. And had been eating grass from where it was lying. When I arrived on the scene I boiled up a billy of tutu and manono bark and let it cool before bathing both hind legs of the horse with this potion taught to me by my uncle and healing doctor from Tuhoe and letting the horse rest awhile. I cleaned the billy out and went and made a cup of tea without sugar and milk and had a break for two hours. When we went down to check the horse it was standing up and was grazing on grass and had walked about ten metres wow what a witch doctor.

Could you boil fresh Tutu with the olive oil to make the ointment, or does it only work with the boiled and dried Tutu leaves (that look like tea leaves)? What does boiling/drying do for the ointment that fresh Tutu lacks? Very curious to learn about this holistic medicine, very fascinating.

Koro told me that the ancestors would boil stones then place them in front of the whare to keep out the bad spirits.

This is a unique process. I’m not sure what the boiling does, but I will do it as shown. Thank you.

Tutu is a extremely poison plant that can kill you. I don't know why they didn't mention this in the video, but i guess it's just Maori styles to leave out details like that
