By todays standards they would try to cancel him but literally every comedian loves him and considers it an honor to be insulted by Rickles. He insults everyone, including himself, but he always ends his bits with classsy, heartfelt remarks. Mr. Warmth will be missed.
That compilation missed one of my favorites from the roast that had Nipsey Russell on it. Don said, "I've seen a lot of blacks in my day Nipsey...but you're overdoing it."

Because he was a frequent player, he got us not only tickets to see his show, but backstage VIP passes to meet the man himself. But that wasn't all. I got pulled on stage to do a skit with the legend himself. And boy did he insult the crap out of me. But once we were done, he pulled me in for a big hug in front of the entire audience, and told me what a great sport I was, and wished me all the best in life, and sent me back to my seat with a raucous applause from the audience. One of the best memories of my life.

These factors get people to realize that something needs to happen with our government _now._ Risk of nuclear war, which has always been the case, but now you have the climate crisis, something they strongly believe. Both sides now confront the idea that the elite are ruining the system for all of us. The system is enhancing the hatred through these _stupid_ bias news networks. He went to the jugular and you knew it was coming and still had that " Did he say that " look on your face . He was apparently quite generous and friendly off stage. There are numerous stories of him roasting couples at his shows only to receive a bouquet and wine afterwards. One story about him roasting a couple on their honeymoon at a hotel/casino discovered upon check-out that Rickles had paid their bill in full. That's class.

Don Rickles and Sammy Davis Jr were such extremely close friends to where when he finished his bit at Sammy's roast, Rickles grabbed Sammy into a big hug and kissed him right there on stage. Off stage he was known as one of the kindest, gentlest, accepting men in the world and was loved by all, but especially his friends who comprised many of his most often chosen targets, If you were supposed to be a "somebody" but was consistently ignored by Rickles, then you were actually a "never was" or a "has been" of no importance. Even regular audience members would pray to be picked on because it gave them status and bragging rights,

Davis and Rickles weren't exactly what you called close but they very much respected one another and of course both had class, hence why the immense love and honor.

Larry said, "You have no opinions on these ppl?" Rickles said something like "Well she's a nice woman, what else am I going to say?" Bringing Bieber down like that is an expected comedy answer so there's nothing funny about it. It's like those damn Trump jokes over and over again during his presidency, and it doesn't matter what side you leaned towards. The whole media made fun of it til you could throw up.
My Hispanic cousin and friends attended his show in Las Vegas. All night he kept walking to them and telling Hispanic jokes. Next to them was a table of friends who are black. After the show, he brought each table a bottle of champagne and sat with them and visited and explained that his show/routine was not how he felt or believed about any of the groups he berated, but it was a time when stereotypes were accepted as just funny and not mean-spirited. We have lost the ability to laugh at ourselves and take every comment as an insult. Yes, there are racists who would love to perpetuate many of these stereotypes, if we take the power to be hurt by their words away from them, that also takes away their ability to hurt us. 19:26
This is why I love you guys. I’m 57, Mr. Rickles is my dads generation. I grew up watching Rickles on late night tv. Just funny stuff. Everyone just let it fly, laughed at each other and themselves. They were all great friends back then, as we should be now. No snowflakes for sure. Keep up the great work.
Don was an absolute treasure. The best interview ever was on David Letterman and Denzel Washington stayed out because he loved Don so much. He laughed so hard at Don the entire time and showed him immense respect as Don did to him
He liked Rickles but the real connection was Denzel's son (NFL one). His son was a fan and Washington happened to be on the same show with Don. So they met each other and Rickles wiped the floor with his son.
Don Rickels was cold blooded. Nothing was off limits. And that’s what made him acceptable. He roasted everyone. What you didn’t see in these clips was the part at the end of every show where he thanks the audience, the celebrities he roasted and tells them how much he admires, respects, and loves them. Then he would thank them for being good sports in it all. Old dude was one of a kind.
Absolutely true. After he rips people a new one he makes them feel like the most special, loved, cherished human on the planet. Especially Carson and Reagan.
I'm glad to see some younger people getting to know the late, great Mr. Rickles. He represents an era that, in many way, I wish we could go back to. It's not a direct quote, but I heard him say once that the reason he was able to make the jokes he did was because he never did it out of hate, it was always out of love. He definitely went hard in the paint during his act, but he was one of the most generous, big-hearted humans you'd ever want to meet. The people he made jokes about always ALWAYS laughed with him, because they knew "they're just jokes" and he truly didn't mean to offend anyone.
Back in 2009, Don Rickles appeared at a casino my grandfather frequented. Because he was indeed such a regular, he got free tickets AND VIP passes for Rickles' show. We got to go backstage and meet him before the show. And yes, he was a man of pure grace and kindness. BUT WAIT! Midway through the show,, he looks into the audience, looks at me, and has me come up on stage. Most of the memory is faded because my mind was practically blanking out from the sheer terror as I walked up onto the stage. We did a WW2 act where we were POWs, and he kept smacking my side with his mic (it had a big foam cover on it) gently when I messed up and making some wise cracks about it in his usual way. But then when we were done and I was leaving the stage, he gave me a big hug right in front of everyone, thanked me for being such a good sport, and wished me all the best in life. And I knew he meant it. He was a great guy. That is a memory I will always treasure.
I noticed how offended some of you were. I find that very sad. This man would never hate on people. This was not an attack behind the backs of the people he made fun of, it was an attack in the face of the people he was making fun of …. With love and respect. Try and keep your minds open when you watch a comedian do their acts.
Rickles always ended his bits with the warmest and most heartfelt fondness for all people. It was all an act and people knew it. A great comedian, a great man.
Don was also very kind. I remember in the 70’s watching him on a variety show and he was teasing and insulting the audience members. He asked a uniformed veteran to stand up and immediately realized that the man had been injured in the war and was shaking. He then praised the veteran and ended it with “God bless you.”
I performed in the Harrah's Orchestra (1985-1990) in Reno, NV. I played The Don Rickles Show many times! Mr. Rickles was the nicest, kindest person I have ever worked for! His act, which he was incredible, was an act! He didn't have a mean bone in his body! There were only a few entertainers that stood above all the others! Don Rickles was one! RIP Mr. Rickles!
I knew someone who was a waiter at a famous restaurant a lot of these famous guys went to, like Dean Martin, Milton Berle, and Frank Sinatra. They all gave him handsome tips. Don Rickles was probably the most talented entertainer that he ever met, and a nice man. He was Greek but Rickles called him dago XD.
Don Rickles was a comedian back in the day who was condescending and rude, but that was his character, and what he did for a living. People back then could laugh at stuff like that. If you look closely, they are all laughing. People just don't laugh anymore. They used him in all of the roasts.
I MISS him, he was one of a handful of comedians that totally had me in TEARS because I was laughing so hard, my stomach would hurt. But off stage he was one of the sweetest, kindest men you would meet
It wasn’t a “character” though. That was just him being him. Back then people could understand context and rationalize joke and humor for why it was and not what can be weaponized against it. People were simply built different back then emotionally speaking

The woman with the wild hair is the infamous Phyllis Diller!! She was one of the best female comedians ever, and her "looks" were always a part of her comedic acts!! Right on brother. Im a 55 year old white guy. I grew up in the 70 and 80s when saying funny stuff whatever it was was funny . Back then everything seemed non racist. The world was free and fun.

I understand, but it did hurt and people are a lot more sensitive to it now. There is an underlying racism in this humor with Rickles, even though he says he wasn't a racist (I'll take him at his word), but he sure made a lot of money doing it, especially in Las Vegas with that older white population. Sure it didn't hurt white people,s feelings, but it did hurt others, looking at what we know now.

If you listen to the end of his shows, you'll hear him talk about how we all need to laugh at ourselves to realize we are all the same. Don talked about everyone, race, religion, country, region, creed, celebrities, even real Italian mobsters - to their face. As he would say - he never picks on a little guy, only big people. Meaning that if was ranking you, it's because he accepts you as you are. You've got to remember that Rickles was breaking through during segregation. Don Rickles made it easier for people from different backgrounds to sit next to each other and laugh together, even make contact with one another at a time when everybody was afraid of one another based on looks. Don Rickles helped break social barriers. He barreled right through them, in fact, for the benefit of everyone. This is the nuance that you're just not getting. You're thinking too literal with a modern, oppressive viewpoint. Believe it not, you're rebuilding the walls that Don Rickles helped tear down.

Who went to his shows - older Americans. He had his niche which he used very well, affording him and his family a wonderful living. I'm not sure how much nuance he used to make a bigger point. Who got his nuances, Grandma from Sacramento? Carlin on the other hand, also had his niche in the 1960s, 70s, 80s especially, became mainstream and enduring and took comedy to another place.
He could do what he did and last as long as he did because there was absolutely no hate, no animosity, no bitterness in him. Everyone knew that he was full of love for everyone and it was an honor to be the butt of his humor. When I was a kid, we lived to see Don Rickles on TV. And if you’ve never seen Kelly’s Heroes watch it!
No one was safe when Don Rickles was roasting people, not even the audience! Don was a legend!! When people went to go see Don perform they fully understood exactly what was coming and they laughed. It was considered to be a honor getting roasted by Don.
There is no one more savage than Rickles. He was all about equal opportunity insults. What this doesn’t show is that he took as good as he gave. When someone got a good one on him, he laughed so hard. He’s from an era of comedy where people understood it wasn’t personal. It was about poking fun at stereotypes.

I saw robert d' nero a few montgs before don died. He opened a hotel in a neighboring city very posh place. I went there hoping don wrickles would be there especially his ties with the philippines. Sadly d' nero did break the news that don couldnt come but wanted to because of his health issues. Don would have been the highlight of that show and it would have been a great send off that he performed his last show in the country that he risked his life for. I saw top comedians in my country that night , you could tell they were expecting don to show up but worried because of what robert said.
Thanks for reacting to one of the greats! Mr Warmth himself. One of the all time greats. Sad thing is, someone like him wouldn't stand a chance of becoming so well-liked and beloved these days. People can't take a joke. Everyone who was on the receiving end of Don's jokes knew they were just that, jokes. He was actually one of the kindest, loving people in the history of entertainment. And that's why he could tell jokes like that.
The best part of Don Rickles is that he was GREAT friends with all those guys he was roasting. Sammy Davis Junior was one of his very best friends. The old school Rat Pack were the best of friends and they held no animosity regarding race, but found great delight in making fun of each other and used it at every opportunity for laughs. If anyone gets touchy or finds it offensive, they are missing out on what’s behind it: great friendship, comfort in that friendship, and 100% security and knowledge that your friends have your back no matter what.
I do not think they were exactly close, but they highly respected each other, and you gain friends that way, and they truly loved each other, and it shows here. I say all this cuz I remember Rickles talking about his relationship with him in comparison to Dean and Sinatra.
Sinatra himself defended Sammy Jr back when places wouldn't allow black people in. Sinatra said if you don't allow Sammy in, we aren't performing here.

Don Rickles was one of the best. No one was spared. As you were watching everyone was laughing. When he was on TV everyone watched, all races. Today so many people are offended. It was because of people like Don and many others that back then we were able to laugh at ourselves. I sure do miss all of those comedians.

Don was basically the first true roast comedian. His nickname in the industry was Mr warmth which was to contrast how cold and brutal his style of comedy was but also because he was known as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood with many people praising his kindness and charity work
If only we could just go back to the time when we could just laugh with one another without feeling offended. That man had a great heart, he just knew how to tow the line while still being hilarious.
Rickles would roast everyone from every race and background, and he would always end his show with the message of all of us having a laugh together for the better of mankind. A GOAT comedian.
What is missing is the heartfelt lovely things he said to the people he roasted. He was actually a very soft and gracious man. He loved everyone he insulted. It was very, very touching.

Rickles "skit" on stage was to do insults. But when the cameras were off, he was one of the friendliest people who you could have known. He famously stuck by his friends through the years, and when he died, NOBODY had a bad thing to say about him as a person. His 'skit' would get calls for people to cancel him today.... but back in his day, being "IN ON" the insult is what made them so funny.
Don Rickels off stage was one of the most generous people in show biz. He gained a reputation of being very generous to hotel and restaurant staff. After he died, his staff at his house paid a wonderful tribute to him as a gentle and kind man.
Don taught us that we could laugh at anything, including each other and still be friends at the end, a lesson that is seldom taught these days. a staple on the Dean Martin celebrity Roast TV shows back in the day, he was Merciless in his routines, right to the last moment when he drops his persona and in the most sincere way professes his love and admiration for the poor schmuck he just degraded. his style allowed his victims to laugh at themself and laugh with others at themself, all the while knowing that Don adored them the whole time. he was a lovely man, and he's missed.
All the famous people of his era would come to see him just to be insulted. That’s how much everybody loved him. After he insulted people, he would end by giving the greatest compliments to the people he was insulting. He was a truly loved gentleman.

My Hispanic cousin and friends attended his show in Las Vegas. All night he kept walking to them and telling Hispanic jokes. Next to them was a table of friends who are black. After the show, he brought each table a bottle of champagne and sat with them and visited and explained that his show/routine was not how he felt or believed about any of the groups he berated, but it was a time when stereotypes were accepted as just funny and not mean-spirited. We have lost the ability to laugh at ourselves and take every comment as an insult. Yes, there are racists who would love to perpetuate many of these stereotypes, if we take the power to be hurt by their words away from them, that also takes away their ability to hurt us. 19:26
This is why I love you guys. I’m 57, Mr. Rickles is my dads generation. I grew up watching Rickles on late night tv. Just funny stuff. Everyone just let it fly, laughed at each other and themselves. They were all great friends back then, as we should be now. No snowflakes for sure. Keep up the great work.
Don was an absolute treasure. The best interview ever was on David Letterman and Denzel Washington stayed out because he loved Don so much. He laughed so hard at Don the entire time and showed him immense respect as Don did to him
He liked Rickles but the real connection was Denzel's son (NFL one). His son was a fan and Washington happened to be on the same show with Don. So they met each other and Rickles wiped the floor with his son.
Don Rickels was cold blooded. Nothing was off limits. And that’s what made him acceptable. He roasted everyone. What you didn’t see in these clips was the part at the end of every show where he thanks the audience, the celebrities he roasted and tells them how much he admires, respects, and loves them. Then he would thank them for being good sports in it all.

I'm glad to see some younger people getting to know the late, great Mr. Rickles. He represents an era that, in many way, I wish we could go back to. It's not a direct quote, but I heard him say once that the reason he was able to make the jokes he did was because he never did it out of hate, it was always out of love. He definitely went hard in the paint during his act, but he was one of the most generous, big-hearted humans you'd ever want to meet. The people he made jokes about always ALWAYS laughed with him, because they knew "they're just jokes" and he truly didn't mean to offend anyone.
Back in 2009, Don Rickles appeared at a casino my grandfather frequented. Because he was indeed such a regular, he got free tickets AND VIP passes for Rickles' show. We got to go backstage and meet him before the show.
And yes, he was a man of pure grace and kindness.
BUT WAIT!
Midway through the show,, he looks into the audience, looks at me, and has me come up on stage. Most of the memory is faded because my mind was practically blanking out from the sheer terror as I walked up onto the stage. We did a WW2 act where we were POWs, and he kept smacking my side with his mic (it had a big foam cover on it) gently when I messed up and making some wise cracks about it in his usual way.
But then when we were done and I was leaving the stage, he gave me a big hug right in front of everyone, thanked me for being such a good sport, and wished me all the best in life.
And I knew he meant it. He was a great guy.
That is a memory I will always treasure.
I noticed how offended some of you were. I find that very sad. This man would never hate on people. This was not an attack behind the backs of the people he made fun of, it was an attack in the face of the people he was making fun of …. With love and respect. Try and keep your minds open when you watch a comedian do their acts.

Rickles always ended his bits with the warmest and most heartfelt fondness for all people. It was all an act and people knew it. A great comedian, a great man.
Everyone that knew him said he was one of the kindest people they'd ever met.
Don was also very kind. I remember in the 70’s watching him on a variety show and he was teasing and insulting the audience members. He asked a uniformed veteran to stand up and immediately realized that the man had been injured in the war and was shaking. He then praised the veteran and ended it with “God bless you.”

I performed in the Harrah's Orchestra (1985-1990) in Reno, NV. I played The Don Rickles Show many times! Mr. Rickles was the nicest, kindest person I have ever worked for! His act, which he was incredible, was an act! He didn't have a mean bone in his body! There were only a few entertainers that stood above all the others! Don Rickles was one! RIP Mr. Rickles!
I knew someone who was a waiter at a famous restaurant a lot of these famous guys went to, like Dean Martin, Milton Berle, and Frank Sinatra. They all gave him handsome tips. Don Rickles was probably the most talented entertainer that he ever met, and a nice man. He was Greek but Rickles called him dago XD.

Don Rickles was a comedian back in the day who was condescending and rude, but that was his character, and what he did for a living. People back then could laugh at stuff like that. If you look closely, they are all laughing. People just don't laugh anymore. They used him in all of the roasts.
I MISS him, he was one of a handful of comedians that totally had me in TEARS because I was laughing so hard, my stomach would hurt. But off stage he was one of the sweetest, kindest men you would meet
It wasn’t a “character” though. That was just him being him. Back then people could understand context and rationalize joke and humor for why it was and not what can be weaponized against it.

I understand, but it did hurt and people are a lot more sensitive to it now. There is an underlying racism in this humor with Rickles, even though he says he wasn't a racist (I'll take him at his word), but he sure made a lot of money doing it, especially in Las Vegas with that older white population. Sure it didn't hurt white people,s feelings, but it did hurt others, looking at what we know now.

If you listen to the end of his shows, you'll hear him talk about how we all need to laugh at ourselves to realize we are all the same. Don talked about everyone, race, religion, country, region, creed, celebrities, even real Italian mobsters - to their face. As he would say - he never picks on a little guy, only big people. Meaning that if was ranking you, it's because he accepts you as you are. You've got to remember that Rickles was breaking through during segregation. Don Rickles made it easier for people from different backgrounds to sit next to each other and laugh together, even make contact with one another at a time when everybody was afraid of one another based on looks. Don Rickles helped break social barriers. He barreled right through them, in fact, for the benefit of everyone. This is the nuance that you're just not getting. You're thinking too literal with a modern, oppressive viewpoint. Believe it not, you're rebuilding the walls that Don Rickles helped tear down.

Who went to his shows - older Americans. He had his niche which he used very well, affording him and his family a wonderful living. I'm not sure how much nuance he used to make a bigger point. Who got his nuances, Grandma from Sacramento? Carlin on the other hand, also had his niche in the 1960s, 70s, 80s especially, became mainstream and enduring and took comedy to another place.

No one was safe when Don Rickles was roasting people, not even the audience! Don was a legend!! When people went to go see Don perform they fully understood exactly what was coming and they laughed. It was considered to be a honor getting roasted by Don.

There is no one more savage than Rickles. He was all about equal opportunity insults. What this doesn’t show is that he took as good as he gave. When someone got a good one on him, he laughed so hard. He’s from an era of comedy where people understood it wasn’t personal. It was about poking fun at stereotypes.

I worked with Don at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas in the 90’s as a sound engineer. He was a lovely, lovely man…
I saw robert d' nero a few montgs before don died. He opened a hotel in a neighboring city very posh place. I went there hoping don wrickles would be there especially his ties with the philippines.
Sadly d' nero did break the news that don couldnt come but wanted to because of his health issues.
Don would have been the highlight of that show and it would have been a great send off that he performed his last show in the country that he risked his life for.
I saw top comedians in my country that night , you could tell they were expecting don to show up but worried because of what robert said.

Thanks for reacting to one of the greats! Mr Warmth himself. One of the all time greats. Sad thing is, someone like him wouldn't stand a chance of becoming so well-liked and beloved these days. People can't take a joke. Everyone who was on the receiving end of Don's jokes knew they were just that, jokes. He was actually one of the kindest, loving people in the history of entertainment. And that's why he could tell jokes like that.
The best part of Don Rickles is that he was GREAT friends with all those guys he was roasting. Sammy Davis Junior was one of his very best friends. The old school Rat Pack were the best of friends and they held no animosity regarding race, but found great delight in making fun of each other and used it at every opportunity for laughs. If anyone gets touchy or finds it offensive, they are missing out on what’s behind it: great friendship, comfort in that friendship, and 100% security and knowledge that your friends have your back no matter what.
I do not think they were exactly close, but they highly respected each other, and you gain friends that way, and they truly loved each other, and it shows here. I say all this cuz I remember Rickles talking about his relationship with him in comparison to Dean and Sinatra.

Don Rickles was one of the best. No one was spared. As you were watching everyone was laughing. When he was on TV everyone watched, all races. Today so many people are offended. It was because of people like Don and many others that back then we were able to laugh at ourselves. I sure do miss all of those comedians.

Don was basically the first true roast comedian. His nickname in the industry was Mr warmth which was to contrast how cold and brutal his style of comedy was but also because he was known as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood with many people praising his kindness and charity work
If only we could just go back to the time when we could just laugh with one another without feeling offended. That man had a great heart, he just knew how to tow the line while still being hilarious.

What is missing is the heartfelt lovely things he said to the people he roasted. He was actually a very soft and gracious man. He loved everyone he insulted. It was very, very touching.
I watch him to remind me that there was a time when we didn't take ourselves so seriously. This man made fun of everyone. Never out of hatred or rancor. Most people knew him as the kindest man with the biggest heart.

Don Rickles paved the way for today's comedians like Ian Bagg. They know how to hit the audience and get them involved. Insult the heck out of them and they laugh all the harder. He is a National treasure who insured the 1st amendment was for everyone no matter how bad you think it is something that doesn't exist today. Rickles "skit" on stage was to do insults. But when the cameras were off, he was one of the friendliest people who you could have known. He famously stuck by his friends through the years, and when he died, NOBODY had a bad thing to say about him as a person.
His 'skit' would get calls for people to cancel him today.... but back in his day, being "IN ON" the insult is what made them so funny.

Don Rickels off stage was one of the most generous people in show biz. He gained a reputation of being very generous to hotel and restaurant staff. After he died, his staff at his house paid a wonderful tribute to him as a gentle and kind man.
Don taught us that we could laugh at anything, including each other and still be friends at the end, a lesson that is seldom taught these days. a staple on the Dean Martin celebrity Roast TV shows back in the day, he was Merciless in his routines, right to the last moment when he drops his persona and in the most sincere way professes his love and admiration for the poor schmuck he just degraded. his style allowed his victims to laugh at themself and laugh with others at themself, all the while knowing that Don adored them the whole time. he was a lovely man, and he's missed.

All the famous people of his era would come to see him just to be insulted. That’s how much everybody loved him. After he insulted people, he would end by giving the greatest compliments to the people he was insulting. He was a truly loved gentleman.
