My sister and I saw Carl Anderson live on this tour. My sister, Marcella, was battling breast cancer, and somehow, by some miracle, we were invited to meet Carl Anderson. My sister, daughter, and I sat in Carl's dressing room for over an hour talking to him. He was giving my sister such inspiration and strength . We didn't know at the time that he too was battling cancer. They both died one day apart. My sister on 2/22/ 2004 and Carl on 2/23/2004. I believe he needed the time with my sister as much as she needed the strength from him.I will never forget the graciousness Carl Anderson gave. God bless both Carl and my sister Marcella.
Oh Maddy, Carl was one of my best friends forever. I knew him before he became famous. Yes, you both needed each other. He had back stage tickets for my ex and I at this very same show. I was with Carl and Veronica just a year prior to this tour.
@@jennifertrudgeon-bone6234 wow. How lucky to have such a beautiful soul like Carl as a friend. He was incredible . A day I'll never forget. I have 5 children and they all grew up listening to me sing along with the soundtrack and movie. They all love it. My middle daughter called me 2 weeks ago and told me she had bought two tickets for the two of us to see Jesus Christ Superstar on June 25th in Richmond. She was the daughter who was with me when we met Carl. I'm so excited. Things have been pretty awful in my life lately but this will definitely make me happy.
@@shimooka0101 I've seen many a Judas in many an production and Carl is the model...the best...untouchable brilliance in the role. One of my favorite voices to listen too in my life. If not my favorite.
Amen! I always felt Blessed to see him performing this just feet away when basically the original cast starred in a revival in the 90’s, 20 years after the movie & when he took over for Ben Vereen when he was ill. What talent!
One of those rare cases, when vocalist range does not dimnish with age. Ronnie James Dio was another example of this. Or Eric Clapton, but he did not have especially good voice in his youth to begin with.
didn't miss a step, maybe even improved on his delivery from the original recording in places. sadly this was his last run as our beloved biblical traitor before he passed from leukemia. i believe they cut the tour short upon his death rather than replace him.
His voice was still so clear and on point. The role of Judas is taxing. Physically, vocally, and mentally. I was a wreck during my runs of Judas. But wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I saw him on this tour when I was 5 years old. My dad had met the cast at a bar the night before the show and managed to get backstage passes for us. I don't remember everything, but he was an incredibly kind man who welcomed us into his dressing room and was very sweet to me and my parents. After seeing the performance, I watched the 1973 movie almost every day for years, it's still one of my favorites.
I remember when I saw him in 1993. As he walked across the stage his voice penetrated my entire body. It was the most powerful he ever was much more than the film. It is amazing anyone could write words and music for that voice. We will never see his like again. Love you Carl!
OUTSTANDING! 30 years later and still as beautiful as the original cut from the movie. I wish the video had been cleaner and clearer but there's no mistaking Carl Anderson's voice. I applaud you Sir!
Crystals for healing?! Totally pagan and new age. All someone needs for healing is a personal relationship with the Redeemer and Saviour of the 🌎 Jesus Christ!!!
Geez. Crystals? Belief in a Saviour? REALLY? To cure leukemia? Both ideas suggest that when someone dies of leukemia, it’s their fault for “not believing enough.” I find that terribly cruel and offensive. And Carl Anderson, RIP, had a magnificent voice.
his singing is glorious, but incredible acting as well!!! the hand gestures and the frantic pacing back and forth really drives the point home that judas really does care and is worried while jesus doesn't care. i can only wonder what it would've been like to watch him live. the best judas and a beacon of pure talent
I was just telling someone about when I saw Carl Anderson on this tour. Just realized today is the anniversary of his death. RIP to THE best Judas of all time. Thank you for still giving me chills after all these years.
I had the album in the late 70’s and went to see the film 5 times in the cinema. Ever since, every single time I’ve seen a stage version, live or on TV, I always compare the singers/actors to Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson, and despite enjoying their performances, they always leave me feeling empty, like I’ve just watched a tribute band.🤷🏻♂️ R.I.P. Carl
Unforgetable voice, and soul. Technique is helpful. But singing not straight from your soul is a bigger sin, but unfortunately so typical in music theatres around the globe. Sleep peacfully Carl :)
Carl Anderson RIP. - a great performer. Ted Neeley & himself remained good friends after the film, and Ted sang "Gethsemane" at Carls funeral, - it was Carls favourite...
I only "discovered" Carl yesterday from a BBC Radio 4 show. I can honestly say that hearing him sing gave me one of the happiest days of my life in recent years. He was & is God's Gift. RIP
It's been hard for me to be still here after gigging with Carl as his bass guitar player, and many others in the washington DC area, such as Billy & johnny Stewart, ETTA JAMES, Tnt Tribble, Ruby johnson,Little Royal etc.May they all Rip. Dave Rans...Bass Player.
At 3:07 carl says, "and our conquerors object to another noisy sect." Just so you're all aware, lol. I have 6 recordings of this same play he was in and that's what he says. I couldn't understand him in this video until I listened to his performances in those recordings, lol. Him and Ted are always the greatest Jesus and Judas characters for this rock opera! RIP Carl!
That was the original lyric Tim wrote. Andrew changed it and Carl always hated it. So in rehearsal Carl just restored Tim's words and it stayed that way until the tour closed 2 years after he passed. He was such a brilliant beautiful man.
The riffs and ornaments are all different with experience, but the passion is as hot and as immediate as ever! I think he actually topped his own performance from the film with this live version.
I've never heard this version before, it's amazing! He had such a gifted voice! Incredible interpretation, just as good as the one from the movie. What a legend!
A great great performer who left us too soon. Thanks for posting this, I had the pleasure of seeing him perform several times. BTW, he is NOT off key!!!
Thank you for saying what I was about to say. I saw the 2003 tour and was in awe over how Carl, when he came out, out sung the music and his voice penetrated my entire body. He was more powerful on the 20 anniversary tour than in the movie though he blew me away in the film too. He was a Gospel singer also. I wish I got his cd but they are no longer being made. I was also lead to Christ some 25 years ago when I saw the movie. true dedication to their craft I m sure has led others to a similar path that no mere sermon could ever do for me..
What a true legend, he nailed this performance a shame he died. R.I.P, Carl Anderson, his talent died too soon, hope he continues to sing amongst the other great legends.
Jeez this guy and his voice do not age! Amazing! Oh my I just read in the comments he has passed. What a shame. He looked to be in great health. May he Rest In Peace.
Wow, I am amazed by how well he still sings. In regards to the acting he is trying to engage the audience which is a big part of theater. Amazing performance.

I can’t believe this was only a year before he died. Leukemia right? He sounded so strong and amazing. Gone too soon. 😢
Best of all time💜
Not really amazing. He took care of his voice. Vocalized, warm up, coo down etc. Age is not a factor of l if you take care of your instrument
Unbelievable. After 30 years, he sings it perfectly

Tina Crystals do work, they hold a very high energy source this is scientifically proven.
The power in this man's voice still gets to me even now, remember going to the pictures watching this, he had the best voice of all the cast
it just seems effortless for him
Susan Hill truly. Just... Blows out of him. Like poow. Lol
