@@nthdegree1269 Have you listened to the original album? Murray Head has so much anguish in his voice. Just listen to Heaven On Their Minds. I'm not saying Carl Anderson isn't good, but he doesn't hold a candle to Murray.
@@iancollins3991 I grew up in the 1970s. Yes Murray Head had a great version, but, Carl simply took it too another level. His "Little Richard Type of Growl" that comes toward the end is highly emotive. I also prefer Ted Neeley to Ian Gillian in his pieces. Not that Neeley is a greater or better singer. Carl Anderson was the version that stuck in most people's minds when I was younger among people who used to listen to those sorts of things.
Nth Degree I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I don’t know how anyone who hears Gillan’s version of Gethsemane can prefer any other version. His tortured screams in that song drip with so much emotion, I get goosebumps every time. I don’t get that from Neeley.
I had the pleasure of seeing a private show with Carl Anderson, honoring his birthday, soon before his death. I said to him, "Carl, I watched you all my life growing up!" He said, "Stop, you're making me feel old!" RIP Carl. You were truly great.
Rest in Peace, no one has ever played Judas better than Carl Anderson! A legend. Yes, I love him. Thanks, God he was on this world to spread his good music!
carl anderson was so talented. that show was probably filmed at 7 am and that backup band sounds like they're playing the music for the 1st time ever and the tempo is way too fast, but he still absolutely slays.
i was lucky enough to see carl anderson in the 25th anniversary tour in 1997 ..3 times! once in l.a. and twice in toronto with the second in the front row. i actually ran into mr. anderson in a restaurant during the run. he stood like a statuesque athlete, charming and warm, will never forget it.
Carl Anderson was and is my all time fave vocalist..I work in rock music and this mans power, control and diction is like no other..so sorry when we lost him..rip Carl
Yessssss! When I rate the best male singing artists of all time...Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry and Meat Loaf, I have been forgetting Carl Anderson and Ted Neeley. These are the best 5 singers of all time! Not in in special order ~
Such a beauty! Such a soul and such a voice! We sure will never forget him. The movie came out 17 years before I was born, but the film has marked my life forever since I watched it again and again thanks to my father when I was a child. Thank you Norman Jewison, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber and the cast...
Watching old episodes of the Tv show Hotel, Mr. Anderson was singing as a guest, with the beautiful Sherry Belafonte, I discovered this awesome gift. Also discovered he’d passed away from Leukemia. Rest in peace Sir. Wonderful voice.
This man was the key to me discovering the beautiful piece of art . I grew up very religious and thought it was blasphemy before I saw it . He made me understand what it was about and I’ve loved it ever since
Most recordings around this time with Carl Anderson (that I've heard at least) are at this tempo, regardless of where its being sung, so maybe Carl wanted it that fast.
Carl was a true artist - his voice was incredible. I had the pleasure of seeing Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson when I was a child. I cherish those memories! May Carl Rest In Peace.
Life passes like grass blown in the wind Loved Carl Anderson since I was 15 Saw him in 1972 in JCS movie His voice is the sound of a generation Can't wait to meet him in Heaven
Thanks for putting this video up. there are some good performers who played Judas but Carl by far is the best. I had the privelidge of seeing him twice. Both time along with Ted Neeley. Best team ever for this play!
What a great performance. A very rare talent, to be able to sing that good so early in the morning and in the wrong tempo :-) Very sad that Carl had to die so young.
You don't have to be a Christian to love the play or the movie. I just love great music & excellent vocals! Carl Anderson should have been more famous than he was.
He made a great point about JCS fans. I hadn't seen a live broadway style show before JCS, nor do I plan on ever again. I am not really a fan of them. But when JCS came to town, I got tickets. Both Anderson and Neely were bloody amazing. Not much impresses me, but I was knocked off my feet that night.
No one has ever EVER been (sang) a better Judas than Carl Anderson
Murray Head did
Carl Anderson was the best. In the one from the movie. Emotional, you can hear the stress and anguish in his voice. Unbelievable

Guitarist: We're going to mess with the tempo to confuse Carl.
Carl: Hold my beer.
No way to confuse Carl! 😝
For real, that guitarist butchered the main riff so bad.
Best comment.
Hahahahahahaha!!! You nailed it!
Pretty sure they rehearsed (though apparently not enough). They obviously had time constraints so pulled a Focus "Midnight Special".
He is so beautiful even live. He was cast as the perfect Judas. Ted and Carl had such strong chemistry together.
Rosie Summer - they were best friends too.
They were the "Lennon/McCartney" of Jesus Christ Superstar!
I got the pleasure of seeing Ted and Carl in 97!!
Carl Anderson is legendary.
I see your taste in music is as good as your training programs :P
INDEED
Oh yes he is, and was.
100% love Carl
Carl hasn't lost any tone from his voice. What a gift!!!

SalvadorLosAngeles I was blessed to be able to witness Ted Neeley Carl Anderson together doing JCS on tour!
Wow that is so fuckin cool
He's a master of playing with the rhythm.
He will always be my favorite Judas portrayal.
Got to see him in Philly on his last tour as Judas and it did not disappoint!
mine, too!
Unique
ABSOLUTELY!
I had the good fortune of having Carl sing a few songs I co-wrote when I first moved to LA.
Rest in Peace, no one has ever played Judas better than Carl Anderson!
A legend. Yes, I love him. Thanks, God he was on this world to spread his good music!
Very hard to watch anyone else in the role after Carl . . . Amazing!!
BEST Musical
BEST Song
BEST Singer
CARL ANDERSON!
Carl never lost his pipes. Wow...
HOLY SHIT his voice was AMAZING his entire adult life!
I met Mr. Anderson in 1995. What a gracious and kind man. He was an amazing performer.
carl anderson was so talented. that show was probably filmed at 7 am and that backup band sounds like they're playing the music for the 1st time ever and the tempo is way too fast, but he still absolutely slays.
I also noticed this rush. But it is easier to sing actually bc u dont have to hold some heavy notes for so long
sounds logical, but they could have faded out the song by the mixer bar
it's probably a time issue.
It was definitely rushed for time. Look up Hocus Pocus by Focus live for an extreme version of this phenomenon.
Katie, you're right -- the band plays too fast.
Such an amazing voice! Best Judas ever!
Every note in her perfect place,no failures,no spots here.

R.I.P. CARL ANDERSON YOU SURE WAS ONE OF BEST SINGERS EVER!!!
Still brilliant after all these years.
No reverb or autotune needed when you you're this great.
Wow, he is so handsome!!! And can STILL belt it out! I miss him so much!!!!
Such a gnarly riff. Carl makes this song seem effortless, his phrasing is so full of sincerity and soul and confidence. ICON/10
No one sings this song better than Carl Anderson as puts so much of his heart into it.
He was fabulous! RIP big man.
Carl Anderson was and is my all time fave vocalist..I work in rock music and this mans power, control and diction is like no other..so sorry when we lost him..rip Carl

born just to sing this, fantastic talent
love love love. Carl Anderson had an incredible voice. May he Rest In Peace.
He was amazing back in 1973 and is just as great in this show. Portrayed the best Judas in the movie. Amazing talent.
Best I can't believe how young he looks he still has the voice❤
Carl Anderson......Amazing Talent!!!

He was born for the role !!!. Fantastic Musical, and a very talented singer.
I was lucky enough to see him perform as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, with Ted Neeley as Jesus, in San Francisco in the mid 90s.
Watching old episodes of the Tv show Hotel, Mr. Anderson was singing as a guest, with the beautiful Sherry Belafonte, I discovered this awesome gift. Also discovered he’d passed away from Leukemia. Rest in peace Sir. Wonderful voice.
I would give anything to have seen Carl perform this live. Wow what an experience that must have been.
Incredible voice!
Goosebumps always with his voice. I watch Jesus Christ superstar 4 to five times a month. But when I do it plays on repeat all day long.
This man was the key to me discovering the beautiful piece of art . I grew up very religious and thought it was blasphemy before I saw it . He made me understand what it was about and I’ve loved it ever since
This should have millions of views..
i fell in love with his character judas and to this day, i still bawl my eyes out every time i watch his death..
I saw him perform back then at North Charleston Performing Arts Center, SC. He did not need a microphone!!! Astounding performance! RIP Carl Anderson
Wonderful, I love him.

That guitar player have somewhere he has to be ten minutes ago? Gawd...
Most recordings around this time with Carl Anderson (that I've heard at least) are at this tempo, regardless of where its being sung, so maybe Carl wanted it that fast.
Frozen Gumwad probably that fat because of tv and the time limit. It was fast but Carl worked it! FABULOUS performance
Frozen Gumwad Lol best comment
Frozen Gumwad ????
He forgot to take a shit before the show
Carl was a true artist - his voice was incredible. I had the pleasure of seeing Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson when I was a child. I cherish those memories! May Carl Rest In Peace.
He had so much talent.
What a legend! No one will ever top his performance in Jesus christ superstar! R.I.P
Everyone compliments his singing (as they should) but his acting as Judas was what really made him a success at the role
Thanks very much for this video.

I Love Carl Anderson !!!!!
He made that movie. He was perfect there.
Holy crap! Spotless, even at that tempo!
Damn he was good, he nailed it and made it look effortless
Huh, "nailed it" - I see what you did there, unintentionally.
I had the ultimate pleasure of seeing this revival tour of JCS and 30 years later I am in awe of Carl Anderson.
Still legendary even in the 90s performing one of the best songs in the Musical. Legend in spirit RIP 🕊️
Such passion! R.I.P. Carl.
