    Good video, only issue I could think of with the whole “shift at 20mph” is different vehicles have different gear ratios in axles

    • @resistorstudios
      @resistorstudios 2 роки тому +5

      Thats because this is not the correct way to do this. Different 700r4s will have a different governor spring/weight combination that will yield varying shift points. The cable is there to maintain proper line pressure with proper throttle arc radius measured with a pressure gauge that screws into the side of the transmission. The only way to change shift points is change the springs and weights in the governor assembly.

    the tv cable is the most critical adjustment on your car, if it gets loose for too long you will walk soon,this cable controls line pressure and tells the unit how hard to shift,if it breaks you'll have nothing but low gear and reverse and they will harsh,the tv cable on hydraulic units is real touchy,after building automatics for 47 years,pay attention to this man he's trying to warn you.warned

      Hi there, just got a 1985 C5 with this issue, prior owner did a carb swap from tpi but apparently didn't properly set up the tv cable/brackets for the 700R and car does fist and hardly engages on 2nd, reverse also works, I'm not driving it to avoid further damage. Is this a sign that the trans is already gone in your experience? Will get correct bracket kit and adjustment on it soon.

      @@mattc9875 BEINGS you are smarter than most,stopping the driving may have saved the internals,only way to check is pull the pan,look for any signs of metal dust and clutch material,the intermediate band is a selective pin,C5 vettes already have the good stuff in them,as i stated in my first statement the TV cable is a very sensitive adjustment,once set it'll give years of use,but i adjust them every other year,replace them every 85k miles,they wear the inside of the cable housing and stick and cause wierd shifts,check pan and you'll know the extent of damage if any,good luck

    My trans was late shifting (revving up before shifting from 1 to 2) I heard a new (TPS) Throttle Position Sensor could fix this problem. I almost paid $40 when i saw this video. I went to look at my TV Trans cable and found that it wasn't snapped into place at the Throttle body. IT WAS ONLY OFF BY LESS THAN A 1/4 INCH! And that caused all this bad shifting.

    How about if you're into the throttle, like if you're denting the floor board with your gas pedal, where should it shift then? P.S. I ran mine without the cable hooked up at all for like 3 or 4 months, wouldn't shift unless I let off the gas like a 4speed , but could shift it manually with no problem.
    Didn't hurt the trans at all?!
    It is a built r4 by Transco out of Florida, guess they do good work cuz it's still going up to a 406 with a little nitrous! I didn't know who did it till I seen a sticker on the trans that says "Transco". 6yrs now, still going strong!

      Just in case somebody needs to know... the TCC solenoid just needs 12v you can hook a switch up to manually do so but be aware if it's not going through the 4th gear solenoid in the trans it will stay in lock up when you stop.

    Hey guys...could use some advice. Got a 1993 G20 Chevy Sports Van. She's a 5.7 V8 .So this was part of the seller's inheritance. She sat for almost one year and prior to owners death, had no Transmission issues. Her trans fluid was dark. I had all fluids changed today and asked the mechanic what he found in the transmission pan. He said there were a few shavings and the fluid was dark but that was it. He told me he was no Transmission guy but really felt like I did not have a transmission problem. The car acts like it has no reverse at all. I was told by a transmission guy to Rev it up a bit after warming it up. If the front clutch in the transmission is stuck together, I should feel it buck like it wants to go into reverse but it can't. I GOT nothing in reverse period. It drives in Neutral which the mechanics that did the fluid changes said they have never seen. I have a 700R Tranny. Sooooo...do I have a shift solenoid / TV cable problem, some sort of cable that's come undone ? My fear is that this is something less expensive than a transmission rebuild and I don't know enough to know what it is ? What do you guys think ?

    • @sparkplug1018
      @sparkplug1018 4 роки тому

      If it has forward with the shifter in neutral that sounds like the shift cable is way out of adjustment. Basically what the shift indicator says is reverse is neutral.
      Easiest way I can think to test this is get under there and disconnect the shift cable, (with the engine off, block the wheels and set E brake!) Put the trans in reverse (one click back from park) then go put the shifter in reverse, see if the cable matches up to where the shift lever is. Id bet it won't match up, and if you were to start the engine with it like that (I wouldn't) it would suddenly have reverse again. If not you've got a bigger issue to deal with.

    My tv cable is slipping. Can I put lubricant on it to get a spring to work better.
    They do not sell t v cables anymore. They sell rebuild kits that look tedious

    My Edelbrock carbed, 5000 lb (ish) conversion van with 1991 700r4 is shifting about 17-18 mph under really light throttle, (maybe 22-23 medium-hard throttle) and shifts 31-32 into 3rd. 42-46 into 4th Is that safe?
    If I'm on the gas a bit harder, won't shift into the 4th until I hit 50mph or so

    You didn’t tell them the most important adjustment. These cables can cause a lot of damage. Your only adjustment should be cable slider all the way in and open throttle to wide open position then your throttle cable is set. You will hear it click as you open the throttle. This is very important trust me. Once set Leave it alone. This cable controls line pressure. You will burn the clutches quick playing with this bad boy.

      I did how exactly you stated on your comment all the way in and open throtle til it clicked... I like how it shifts and everything... I noticed 2nd shift kicks in around 17 and third around 28... Also when gassing it acceleration is actually pretty quick as shifting.... Is that how it supposed to function.... Thanx in advanced

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge brudda! Good tip on marking the position as well. I always thought you get the main setting by WOT then basically dial it in as you’ve mentioned.
    Great ride!! Take care!!

    Does the same guidance apply to the 200-4R? I think it does but I thought I'd come straight out and ask. Thanks for posting the part of snugging up the slack cable to begin with in the engine compartment. That was good since everybody else assumes you have a perfectly fitting cable to begin with.

      you can always drop the pan and do a visual. a proper adjusted cable should have the plunger all the way in at wot. also make sure your pedal is achieving true wot. have someone hold it down to the floor then manually open the throttle arm. if you can’t move it then you’re good. if you can then you need to check your pedal and throttle linkage/cable

    Did you have a problem with your TV cable leaking?I replaced mine because it was leaking and it looks like the new one is leaking.

      I know this comment is 3 months old but I had the same problem. What fixed it for me was putting the rubber boot in the transmission first and then sliding the tv cable into the boot. Putting it on the tv cable first ended up crushing it and not sealing correctly.

    Dude u saved my a**!
    I just put a B&M 700r4 in my 1971 C20, not one other UA-cam video- OR written instructions from multiple manufacturers mentioned the spring in line with the tv cable! I appreciate you very much and this video. 🍻

    Thank you so much for your expertise! Went to carburated on my 5.7l crate engine with edelbrock perfomer dual plane intake and a 1406 carb. It does just what you're talking about with throttle pedal and shif point. I need to put a spring on mine because it shifts at different speeds depending on throttle position. Not wanting to burn up this transmission. Thanks

    Thank you. I'm adjusting my cable in a 1990 Suburban and started with the book method of pushing the plastic end all the way in and allowing it to ratchet out at WOT and got mixed results: It now shifts better, but feels like bit too late and it struggles to stay in overdrive at around 60 mph. I've just loosened it about that much that you've shown and will see.
