Thank you, this was exactly what I needed…plus it was $10 off right now. I tried to mod my airbrush compressor, but these results look much better. Thanks!
I did the same thing and I agree with your testing, I came up wit the same results. The funny thing is I got the same aquarium pump with a broken knob too!!
Thank you for the side by side comparison! I was a click away from buying the xTool air assist and now, after watching your video, I will be purchasing the aquarium pump and additional tubing! 😁
the EcoAir Commercial 1 - is even cheaper and it comes with a 6 valve manifold so you can open several of the valves for when you want decreased flow. I measured the air output at the nozzle with a vane anemometer and got almost identical results to the Xtool pump.
Your video saved our laser! Apparently our Xtool air assist was defective right out of the box. It made noise and pumped a hint of air and since we were brand new to the laser world,we thought that it was running normal. After watching your video we purchased the new air assist that you suggested and WOW is an understatement! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks for the comparison. I do not yet have an XTool, but I am considering. I expected an aquarium pump of the same l/min output would work well. You did good to find what looks like the same model, at least made by the same factory. Dave.
I just use a similar aquarium pump for Sculpfun S10. it just works flawlessly & silent with no burn marks when cutting. Leave it off when engraving if u want a darker shade or if u use powder filled on text or graphics. The air will blow off the powder before u melt it 😂. Mine is AP-50 which is 54L/min air flow. If u buy aquarium pump for diode laser 50L/min would be enough. Bigger will be better but had to secure thin workpiece well. ❤thanks for your comparison video, lucky I didn’t buy the Sculpfun pump which is of cos more expensive.
Wow great find! Definitely a cost savings there and the variable dial is nice for when engraving if it can run low enough because engraving with a tiny bit of air will keep the lens clean.
@@asherdiy haha funny to see someone say that we are all one in the same, UA-cam is a strange place but I love all the community learning everyone puts into it. And I appreciate your sharing of knowledge as well, keep up the good work!
I have an xTool air assist, and it is crap. I got it in November, and it stops working when the unit gets hot. I am on here now looking to get a pump to replace the one I got with my xTool air assist. I will be purchasing this one, as I have things to do and I have waited 3 weeks for xtool to respond regarding the crap pump I received with the air assist I purchased from them. Thanks for the video! You saved me some hunting around to identify which pump to get.
Great video, just bought my Xtool D1 20W and was gonna first try it out without the air assist... however, after watching your video its good to know I have other paths! And as Chad Customs Creations said, its a great tool to have some variable with the volumen that is being sucked out. Great content brother.
Air assist is also very useful for keeping your laser lens clean. Without the air assist, the smoke can go right up and settle on the lens and damage it when it gets heated by the laser.
Doubt the air assistnpumps are any better quality, after all, aquarium pumps are designed to run constantly for years. My aquarium pump in my aquarium cost about $15 and has been running 24/7 for 8 years now 😊.
Great video. I just finished my review on the Creality Falcon2 laser, and that comes with... Exactly the same air assist unit. Fun fact, The Creality version has a connector that plugs right into the laser engraver and has the pressure setting dial at the side of the laser. As for engraving. It is better to use the air assist also when engraving, but at very low power. When using the air assist, the smoke generated by the laser can't reach the laser lens, therefore you won't have to clean the lens that often.
Yeah I realized the same thing about 2 hours after I ordered my x-tool d1 pro kit. I did not realize you could shove the skinny tube in the fat one on the aquarium pump. I thought you would need an adapter.
That metal piece that came with the aquarium pump is a distribution manifold that allows you to aerate multiple areas of your aquarium with just the one pump. Pretty nice that they include that, actually; some companies, you just get the pump itself, no hardware to speak of.
For the same money Xtool bill for their air assist you can buy a small air compressor and get higher (and vary the) air pressure out the nozzle. Seems like a better alternative if you're willing to spend the money anyway because it'lll do the job better and be useful for other things. Add a solenoid valve for next to nothing and you've one-upped the Xtool air assist.
@@1985cactus Cheap air compressors are loud. Look up california air or sub 70db compressors. Just for air assist? Prob not worth it. Good for running tools, spraying, sandblasting etc.
And for the cost of the xtool D1 air assist, you would think we'd have air flow control. And yes I have the d1 and d1 pro, i could of used the cheaper way out.
I got an aquarium pump rated at roughly twice the air output of a standard air assist pump. Then I did a cutting material test in lightburn, no air, 30lpm (standard air) and 60lpm (aquarium pump). There was a noticeable difference in each test. The 60lpm aquarium pump did the best, cutting several squares more than the standard pump
Longer has the same pump for $70 (for 5/10W), I see the same pump on amazon for $40-60, but also seeing others with the same air flow ratings for half that.
You see this a lot with car parts. Famously Lamborghini parts costing thousands of dollars but they are really just an Audi part which can be had for less than $100.
Really great video, I’m a newbie with all this and I really liked how you made the chart with air and no air and speeds. How did you do that is there a way you could share that with me?
Hey Tyler - I recommend watching the "Master Lightburn Material Tests" video on my channel. It shows the easiest way to make these test grids. And it also points to where you can download one of mine for free. Cheers.
I dont think the Polyurethane tubing you linked to is a good match for this purpose. I got one from Creality - its almost identical and has the volume control - but the tubing I think may be Silicon - it fell and crossed paths once by accident with the laser - and didnt burn. That one you linked to could be a fire hazard?
The sad part is xtool will come out with a control valve that costs a huge amount more, but to be able to engrave acrylic, you need to be able to turn your air flow down. The current solution for me is vice grips to pinch the line.
Well, this is nice to know, except if you buy the pump and tubing, but don't have the nose adaptation (I don't know if you can buy it separately, and for my brand of laser, you can't), it is a bit useless, no?
Does the stool not offer pump control so light burrn can switch the pump on and off as it's working on a project? I have the Sculpfun S9 and Sculpfun offer an air pump that have the control function.
I was just looking for a comparison. I have everything i need for air assist for Longer Ray5 10W except pump itself. And i hate overpaying. Would it be worth to get more powerful aquarium pump tho? More than 30L/min
Are there any specific requirements? I mean, I am from Costa Rica, so ir might take too much time to bring that one, so can you help me wish any specific requirements to find a similar one in my country, please? 🙌🏽
Hi Cliff - yeah, for this specific aquarium pump it comes with a North American 120v plug, so it would require a power adapter to work on a UK style outlet.
@@asherdiy Hi Asher, thanks, I haven't been able to find a 220v version from the manufacturer unfortunately, cheers for finding a great product though 👍
You may be able to buy a UK/US general purpose adapter (like an American would use when traveling in the UK). I haven’t bought one in years, but last I checked they were pretty affordable.
I just bought a laser and my first thought was "Can I save some money on the air assist", and you answered that questions perfectly. Thanks!

Exactly what I just did.. had a 80gal Ac sitting in the garage 25.00 worth of fitting and hoses and away I burn
But air compressors are very loud. You can't use them everywhere you can use an air pump.

They have in live air control valves. You can get them for like $2-3 a valve. Does the same thing.

Can you tell me which material you used here?
And also tell me which types of MDF and ply we can use for laser engraving and cutting
I think I used Maple plywood from Home Depot for this test.
And sorry - your second question is more complicated than I can answer in a comment.
My new Xtool air assist has the one on the fish tank in this video. Hmm.
Actually I kind of like the no air cloud The scorch marks give it kind of a 3D effect
